The guitar solo in this song is one of Kirk Hammett's greatest compositions. I've been listening to it for over 30 years and it still hits me like the first time I heard it.
He put the emotion into this one for sure, it was a mixture of frustration, anger and pain, apparently he was pissed off with how many takes it was taking to record it and just ripped this one out of his soul, with the magic you hear as the result.
If you watch the documentary A YEAR AND A HALF it shows Kirk trying to do the solo and after he does it the first time Bob Rock, their producer says "OK, no go back and do it, you know GOOD," cause his original solo was crap for this song.
It's proof that the quality of the solo, music, is not based on how fast it is, how technical it's, but how it sounds, and matching the song. Thats why Metallica is the best in tha game
@@JP8Mate except the song was written about the movie Johnny got his gun. The music video gives context to the song and drives the point home extremely hard
Kirk proves in this guitar solo that there's more emotion to be given and heard in a few slowly bent notes than in a hundred quickly played notes. It's one of the best non-shredder solos done by a shredder.
@ClifHaley The irony is that Hammett was trying to do a shred-type solo when they were recording parts for this particular song and Bob Rock (along with Lars) ridiculed him, poked and prodded until it resulted in this epic solo. It was Kirk's response.
He talks highly of Alex Lifeson of Rush in a documentary in influencing his phrasing. He's very good at dynamics, there's definitely shredding in there but also times where it slows down.
the way she moves her head when the solo part...she's truly enjoying it! she is about to cry :) we feel like that :) we metalheads do have feelings too.
Lol I'm confused about the solo part. Are you talking about the solo with vibrating by yourself, the solo with the other guitar player hitting notes from the string, or SOLO LIKE SINGULAR AND NOT PLURAL AS IN MORE THAN THAT "ONE" SONG YOU GRIP THE TABLE AND REACT TO WHERE 3 OR 4 GUITAR PLAYERS JOIN IN MAKING MORE HIGH NOTES FROM THE STRINGSS! FORGIVE ME I AM JUST CONFUSED WHAT YOU MEANT ABOUT SO COULD YOU PLEASE TAKE A DRINK OF SOMETHING AND BEGIN TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER 😳🤣😉😘🤪😎😈💚💋👅
WOW, you were virtually speechless throughout the entire song. And that's powerful to have that kind of effect on a person. I'm 52 now and have been listening to these guys since highschool and this song in particular has always had that effect on me too. It brings a tear to my eyes virtually every time I listen to it, and I've probably heard it a thousand times. DEFINITELY one of the best songs I've ever heard, by ANYONE. Another one that's right at the top of the list for me for Metallicas power ballads is Nothing Else Matters. Another great melodic song and James' vocals are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. Please check out next
James' upbringing (the singer) was quite oppressive in parts. Both parents were part of Christian Science, which believes that you should not seek medical help if you get sick. So his mother died of cancer when he was 16 due to this. Before or after (can't remember) his dad left. So this is James sharing his pain and abandonment.
His dad left when James mom was sick with cancer (before her death) AND let him and his mother High and dry with nothing and no money. James mom couldn't work.....such a POS move. Then James was confused on how and what relationship to have with his father when James became wealthy and famous. James bought his dad a house and other things(man toys) because he "thought" its what he was supposed to do.
this song hits waaay harder when you know the words. being a grown man and listening to the words in this song takes me to places i dont really wanna go in my head.
@@jsalvatori metallica started in, 1981...James was 19. So, this song came out in, 1991 but was written in/during their 1988 tour. So, James was, 26 when he wrote this song and was 30 when it was released.
Unforgiven is just another in a long line of epic-level songs Metallica has written, composed and performed over the years. They are masters of their craft. Never been to a show of theirs that disappointed either. They always deliver live on stage. Give "One" a listen next. That song is a masterpiece and the official video illustrates the story the song is conveying in such a deep way. Great reaction!
Unfortunately, without knowing the song, a lot of people place too much of their attention on the movie clips, rather than the music. When you know the music and then see it intertwined with the video, it makes so much more sense.

My wife calls me a poser (she was a metalhead long before I was), but this song is what originally pulled me into Metallica back when I was in high school.
One of my favourites of all time, such a powerful message and beautiful music, and great video. You could try to have the lyrics open in a phone or tablet so you can have a glimpse at them, and some people don't like it, but you can pause and comment on things or review the lyrics or a video scene (as long as you rewind and never cut the track 🤣) Following for a bit and so far liking your videos. This is my favorite Metallica song. This is also one of their more interesting videos. Love the guitars in this one. Can I suggest you try some Rammstein. They put on the ultimate show in their live performances. I would suggest Rammlied or Engel from the Madison Square Gardens show or Sonne from the Rock im Park show or Ich Will from the Hurricane Festival. They put on a show you won’t forget.
Bob Rock's influence on The Black Album is undeniable. As a younger fan, I was so angry with that collaboration. As I got older, I grew to appreciate Rob Rock, so much so that today, The Black Album is in my top 3 Metallica albums
I am very much the same with music, I tend to feel music rather than listen to lyrics and people are often surprised that I have no idea what they say unless I have listened to something so much that the words have subliminally sunk in!

I would love to see you react to a band called Five Finger Death Punch especially to their song Coming Down 🤘👍
Shows how today's music has gone to Hell. This song is far better than any song made in the last 10 years no question. Such a beautiful and catchy song you'll never find today.
Loving your channel. You are going to love it. Guaranteed!!! All their videos are insane, high budget and the music is fire! 🔥🔥🔥 Trust me, you won’t regret it.
Their music is so good its like listening to a movie soundtrack. I urge you to react to both Unforgiven 2 and Unforgiven 3. Personally, i rate them, 3, 1 and 2 but all are good songs. I'm loving your Metallica reactions but given your love of their music, i think you would love the greatest rock band of all time, Led Zeppelin. They simply don't have a bad song...well maybe one or two? Maybe start with Dazed and Confused, off their first album. You won't ever look back and if you've never experienced them before, you are in for a musical feast.
Great reaction , loved it. I am the same as you, I listen to the complete song first. Feeling the music and the vocals' energy first. After a while, I start listening to the lyrics. As mentioned before ,another great Metallica powerballad is 'One'. The greatest of them all. You need to listen and watch their official video because the video enhances the power of the song and the other way around.
Ahh, now you just have to do Unforgiven 2 & 3... I would suggest "The Day that Never Comes" and "Halo on Fire". Also if you want to go into a totally different direction "Dyers Eve" is phenomenal.
Please do any song from Alice in Chains - Unplugged. This concert/show, specifically the song Nutshell, is often described as Layne (yes its spelled that way too) Staley singing at his own funeral.
The greatest writing by James imo. Lars showing off why he is one of the most important person in Metallica. This song was supposed to be a traditional ballad just like fade to black, it was Lars's idea to go the opposite route with a heavy verse and a melodic soft chorus and there you have if it, one of the greatest songs ever made.
James said in an interview that this song is about him not being able to forgive his father. i.e. for leaving him and his sick mother high and dry with nothing.
I also, like you described, am someone who "feels" music. I don't necessarily hear it, and some of my favourite songs in the world... I couldn't tell you what they're about or what half the words are. Certain combinations of notes, instruments, sounds, and dissonance give me chills and major goosebumps. One of the best examples of this for me is Mr. Crowley by Ozzy Osbourne. Could set up a wind farm on my arm hairs for that one.
All of these hardcore old-school Metallica fans give these guys crap for this album, but doesn't even realize how emotionally heavy and deep this song is. Plus Kirk's solo? COME ON! It's no wonder this is still played on radios around the world.
Forgive me if I’m echoing another comment… this song is about a boy growing up in a religious household, forced religious teaching down his throat and taught not to question God (first verse). The second verse the boy has grown but he’s now in a battle with his upbringing- a life to please God and others - family, priests, whoever. He then grows old “die regretfully “. “That old man here is me” refers to the lyricist- James Hetfield, Metallica’s lead singer who grew up in a strict, religious house, who lost his mother at age 16 because medical intervention was against their religion. He believed she could have been saved if it weren’t for their beliefs.
I never really listened to Metallica lyrics, despite listening to their music for years and even singing along. My ear always gravitated heavily to instrumentals. So I always primarily just focused on the instruments.
Lyrically, this song is a cradle-to-the-grave story. Following the life of the protagonist, from birth to death. Finally, we hear the line "That old man here is me." This shifts the song from the Third to the First Person. Which changes the song from being about some distant stranger, to being about the narrator. This song is a grim but beautiful tale, about enduring a life of mediocrity.
The unforgiven is a trilogy of songs....this one was the first, the second chapter was on "Reload" and is titled "The unforgiven II " , the third and last part of the trilogy appeared in "Death Magnetic" in 2008 and is titled (guess what ?) "The unforgiven III" I really recommend going through them too....

Pink Floyd id start with 'Time' or The live version of Comfortably Numb for one of the best guitar solos of all time. A Tool songs to try next id reccomend 'The Grudge or Lateralus'
Can I be so bold to do a few suggestions, since you say you love to feel the music? Try some Led Zeppelin: Achilles last stand, Since I've been loving you, Wholla lotta love, and many others really give some thrills. Ofcourse there is Stairway to heaven, but that song is known by every living soul on this planet. Ow and there is Black Sabbath. They have some song that really do it: War Pigs, Children of the grave, they are just wow. Just suggestions. Ow btw, love your work.
A couple of Metallica suggestions... "...And Justice For All" live from Seattle '89 "The Four Horsemen" live from San Diego '91 And "Nothing Else Matters" official video. Oh, & if you like instrumentals, "Orion" & "To Live Is To Die", album version of both. 🤘🏻
I saw an abhorrent lack of people recommending you check out the sequels to this song "Unforgiven II" and "Unforgiven III" so I will. 2 and 3 are direct sequels to this and they continue the story of the person this story is written around.
I love your reactions to Metallica and that you're already on the black album, but I recommend going back a bit and going through ORION before continuing hehehehe

You picked a great one
Kathryn love your music 🎶 🎼 reactions
You need to react to MetallicA One studio version and One the music video after
I was the singer & lyricist in my band and I didn't care about the lyrics. I wrote for melodies, the beat, the feel.
Your reactions are so authentic it's so raw and full of emotion no matter the music content you listen to. Love it keep it up check out - all about you classified acoustic version please 🙏
Hi Miss Kathryn . You seem to enjoy more of the heavier Rock
Here Are 2 you might Enjoy As well
1) Alice in chains ( Here comes the Rooster 🐓 )
2) Radio Head ( Creep )
Like Button 🔘 has been Illuminated 😁👍👍🌞
Note . One of my Personal Favorites is by the
Scorpions ( Still loving you ) 🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴🌹
The Unforgiven trilogy is definitely a staple for Metallica!
The Unforgiven trilogy is my favorite song(s)
Metallica - Bleeding me
Best Metallica ... and best history song !
KL's tagline: "#chills" 😁
You gotta do "One" next. Make sure and do the official video version of that one. It will knock your socks off.
Pantera - Cemetery Gates
Its a must on the road you're going down.
Subbed
You should also check out metallica and the San Francisco symphony doing no leaf clover
You need to check out the theatrical version of "One", not the live version, not the radio edit, but the full-length video
Definitely add Pink Floyd to your videos list, theyre the orignal Tool haha. Seriously though both bands have incredibly emotional songs with amazing lyrics and instrumentals. Pink Floyd id start with 'Time' or The live version of Comfortably Numb for one of the best guitar solos of all time. A Tool songs to try next id reccomend 'The Grudge or Lateralus'
While I agree to an extent, Tool is nowhere near the band Pink Floyd is, and that is with the upmost respect.
my love song
You are a good reaction lady
Can I be so bold to do a few suggestions, since you say you love to feel the music? Try some Led Zeppelin: Achilles last stand, Since I've been loving you, Wholla lotta love, and many others really give some thrills. Ofcourse there is Stairway to heaven, but that song is known by every living soul on this planet. Ow and there is Black Sabbath. They have some song that really do it: War Pigs, Children of the grave, they are just wow. Just suggestions. Ow btw, love your work.
Your trademark symbol is becoming the "chills" forearm gesture lol 😋
😂
A couple of Metallica suggestions...
"...And Justice For All" live from Seattle '89
"The Four Horsemen" live from San Diego '91
And "Nothing Else Matters" official video.
Oh, & if you like instrumentals, "Orion" & "To Live Is To Die", album version of both. 🤘🏻
the end of screaming James, sad, he roared like a lion in "for whom the bell tolls" live in Moscow. By the way, that would make a good react video.
And there is our beloved James..
React to The Day That Never Comes by Metallica live performance!! Plss
Great song choice to react
I saw an abhorrent lack of people recommending you check out the sequels to this song "Unforgiven II" and "Unforgiven III" so I will. 2 and 3 are direct sequels to this and they continue the story of the person this story is written around.
I love your reactions to Metallica and that you're already on the black album, but I recommend going back a bit and going through ORION before continuing hehehehe
