The Lion King 2 Simba's Pride - Under the Stars (deleted vs final comparison with subtitles)

  • Around June of this year, someone on Archive.org published a ''beta'' version of The Lion King sequel, which contained a bunch of deleted scenes, as well as others that were re-worked rather than entirely scrapped. After watching it for myself, I've decided to sit down and crop these parts separatedly, as well as add subtitles for those whose main language isn't English or cannot listen to the video at the moment.
This one is just a simple sentence difference by the end - while the original version is correct, I think the final version not only is more impactful, it's also the one other instance where the characters inform the viewer that Scar is not Kovu's father (the other one being Nuka saying that Scar simply took him in). Not only that but it also solidifies the fact that Kovu's not 100% sold on the idea of resuming Zira's mission anymore way better. At least in my opinion.

I'm really liking the way this scene depicts how Kiara and Kovu were raised in completely different circumstances. From Kiara's point of view, she sees one constellation as a baby rabbit with a fluffy tail, signifying her overall innocent, kind, and optimistic nature. Kiara was adored, doted on, sheltered, and protected by Simba and the rest of his pride. She also grew up in a place with minimal to no hardships, as the Pridelands have resources in abundance, and is overall a generally peaceful place to live, with no active conflict. Simba also taught her how to be a kind, wise, compassionate ruler, and to have a strong sense of justice.
Kovu, on the other hand, sees another constellation as two lions sparring over a scrap of meat, which shows his hardened, cynical, and toughened personality. Unlike the easy-going, serene Pridelands, Kovu was raised in the Outlands - a place that's entirely based on survival of the fittest, violence, and conflict. Lions have to be strong and enduring to live there, or else they would perish. Kovu was taught by Zira to be malicious, hateful, scheming, and vengeful. Zira also fostered the belief that violence is the only way to solve any issues in life. Kovu served as an important member of the Outlander pride, but Zira only treated him fairly because Scar chose him to be the future king that would take his place in the Pridelands. Zira selfishly regarded Kovu as a tool to get her revenge on Simba for killing Scar (even though the hyenas actually murdered him, not Simba), and exiling her along with the other Outlanders from the Pridelands. She intended for Kovu to be used as leverage so that when he did defeat Simba, he would become the king, and the Outlanders could take over the Pridelands once again.
Another important part of this scene was when Kovu asked Kiara if Scar was with The Great Kings in "heaven" and she genuinely couldn't answer him. The expression on her face alone says it all. Zira brainwashed Kovu into believing that Scar was a righteous, honorable, and fair ruler, when in reality he was a scheming, manipulative tyrant who would stoop so low as to murder his own brother in cold blood, and attempt to kill his innocent nephew just to take his place on the throne. Let's also not forget how the influence of both Scar and the hyenas destroyed the Pridelands. At this moment, it seems that Kovu begins to question the validity of what Zira told him concerning Scar, Simba, and the Pridelanders.
This still remains as one of my favorite scenes from the movie all these years later. TLK 2 is a highly underrated Disney sequel - one of the best, in my personal opinion.

"No one here thinks he was very great. Do they?"
Kovu has lived his whole life by being told that Scar was the great king (in Zira's eyes) and that all the mistreatment from Simba and all the other Pride Landers is because they're the bad guys. Kovu immediately begins the question himself when he looks deeper to the very reason why no one in the Pride Lands thinks highly about Scar and through of him about them, with the little help from Kiara and later from Simba.

Zira always spoke very proudly about how evil Scar was.

Hmm, it sounds like Kiara and Simba no longer star gaze. I wonder why they stopped, maybe because she got older? Or I wonder if it had to do with Kiara not getting along with Simba because of his hard edge and overprotectiveness.

I don’t get that impression from this scene just because she says “my father and I used to do this all the time” she doesn’t say it with sadness like she misses it maybe she’s just referring to her as a cub under the stars with Simba and they still do do it but ever since Kovu saved her it’s become less and less because Kiara is spending all her time with Kovu

That was probably before Kovu was determined not to be Scar's son.

They used these words from Kovu in the comic and then Kovu says “oh I’m sorry” and Kiara actually answers with “it’s alright Kovu”
Personally though I prefer the line “he wasn’t my father but he was still a part of me” because it establishes that Scar IS NOT Kovu’s father but still if they kept it in I reckon that it could’ve gone like this “no one here thinks he’s very great do they? Scar he.. he wasn’t my father but he was still.. a part of me” still though

Now we can see, how much Kovu was manipulated. From now on, he was just beginning to doubt his father... So he realized all the lies which Zira had told him... And it's cooler than "I can feel he still lives in me"...
I think this scene was remaked only to tell the audience (for the second time...) that Scar WASN'T his real farher... Whyyy!

I will point out that there already was a much earlier scene voiced that had Kovu and Zira confirm that Scar wasn't his father. So the old deleted scene didn't need to cover that Scar and Kovu weren't related. However, with the earlier conversation with Kovu & Zira cut, they needed to change this scene to confirm that Kovu was not biologically Scar's.

I hate that we constantly have to be reminded that Scar is not Kovu's father (like we’re fucking idiots). If they kept the film the way it was before the edits, it would've been enough to know that.
