I live in San Diego and despite all the issues here, I have hard time envisioning living anywhere else but maybe Hawaii or Fl. Indiana, LMAO no thanks.
Some of my friends in the Navy were stationed there and they LOVE IT!! They bought a property in 2013. In hindsight, genius move. But it's not for everyone. Especially, for retirees, younger millennials, and Gen Z. $3,200 in rent for less than 1,000 square ft (in south city...a small area south of SF) is unsustainable for people on a fixed income with rising healthcare costs. If you can afford it, it's great! But we've had people move here, who work remote, they buy a home here and they plan on moving back in a few years. At which point they can keep that property as a rental or take the equity and use it for a downpayment for their second home in California. That's what we've seen

TBH, everywhere in the USA is out of hand and prices are crazy. If I was young, I honestly would consider living abroad. I am sad to say but the American Dream is dead. Cheers

As someone who was born and raised in Indiana for 30 years before moving to AZ, the only reason you move to IN is for family reasons or a job transfer. Very rarely do people voluntarily move to IN. I moved back (family reasons) to IN (Northwest part) because of family, but after 2 years I had enough and I am back in AZ.
Its kinda funny watching how Californians act when they go to smaller rural communities. I grew up in rural PA where its normal to leave your door unlocked or for kids to just throw their bikes on their front yard without a thought. My California native spouse was absolutely enthralled by all this and was almost confused by it at first. The crime culture in california truly has warped peoples minds into thinking basic safety and human decency doesnt exist anywhere.
@@tomtaber1102 How do you mean? As far as “big cities” I honestly don’t consider any other city in Indiana as “big” except Indy. Which has more than 1 million. The next closest city is Fort Wayne. If you include the entire MSA, (Shelby, Huntington, Adams, Allen, Noble, DeKalb, Whitely and Kosciusko) counties, that would be about 350k ish. Evansville, Gary, South Bend, Bloomington and Lafayette are about half the size of Fort Wayne in terms of population…excluding maybe Gary
I grew up in what you would call a very safe and very low crime community. Literally every family on the block was similar to "Leave it to Beaver" in real life. However it's just common sense to lock your doors. It only takes 1 crazy to ruin your day.
Originally from Bedford and an IU grad, I've lived in the Los Angeles area for 32 years. Just before the pandemic, I seriously considered moving back to Bloomington but one thing stopped me. A study of 55 college towns was conducted to determine which one would be most economically vulnerable to a pandemic. Bloomington was at the top of the list. Post-pandemic, I'm still not sure about moving back. Bloomington's unemployment rate is over twice the national rate and one-quarter of its residents live at or below the poverty level. Affordable housing has become a major issue there as well.
College towns are unique b/c the major economic driver is the college. Unlike other cities that are driven by a specific industry, manufacturing in the Midwest or tech in Silicon Valley for example. The fastest growing most lucrative areas now are major college near cities with other economic drivers. Austin is the perfect example. The University of Texas is there and the economy is driven by Dell...all sorts of other major employers. The key here is remote workers. For people who work remotely, they can maintain close to the same salary as they would in a bigger city but enjoy the cost of living in a smaller town. That's what we've been seeing.
Little concerned on crime. The Nextdoor app in Fort Wayne has several posts about theft and recent news about the 3rd shooting in the past year at the mall…
happens here in Arizona to a prolific degree. in fact, only 30% of people in Arizona were born here. it's kind of disgusting. the worst is when they come and all they can talk about is how much better it was back home, this goes for californians, new yorkers and those "ill-annoying" (folks from illinois) people. it has made it almost impossible for locals to afford the market. i fortunately bought my first home in 2012 at the bottom of the market and have since traded up and built a lot of equity, but i feel bad for folks trying to enter the market today for the first time. our median prices went from the $130's, to the $180's, to $250, to now $500K, all in the span of a decade. it is truly insane that some years in certain zip codes houses seemed to double in price, year over year.
While it's true most people in AZ did not grow up here, there are other factors that have contributed to the rising cost of living. I've never bought into the theory that it's their fault for moving here. And talking about how nice CA was back in the day, they aren't wrong.

After moving here from California to be closer to their kids, They said the first thing that stood out to them when they moved here was how quiet it was. They sat on the front porch and counted the cars that went down their street. They were just shocked and they live in a charming historic neighborhood downtown.

cali is utter shit and paradise at the same time. im born and raised here on the cali coast. i still live here today. for the people who dont have junkies in their neighborhoods and their houses are paid for, and live on the coast. then yes cali is a paradise. there is alot to do in cali. and the weather is always perfect. 24/7/365. on the coast. if you dont fit into that catagory, then cali is shit. unlike decades past, nobody comes cali to make their lifes fortune. if its not cheap. its not right.
