The show was in doubt when a power cut took all the lights out minutes before the band was due to play. Paul McCartney responded by taking to the piano and performing 'When I'm 64', several years before it was heard on the legendary Sgt. Pepper album.

He wrote "When I'm 64" when he was 16.
I appreciate that he listened to, took an interest in, and played an extremely wide range of music genres from an early age, including vaudeville as well as rock and roll. I'd like to say thanks, especially to his father.
Absolutely right, Jim McCartney was such an important influence on Paul's career and his musical influences too.
People diss this song. It is amazing music.
I knew Paul wrote 'When I'm 64' when he was a teenager, but I didn't know he played it on the piano at The Cavern. I wonder if the people who were at the gig, remembered it when 'Sgt Pepper' came out.

Imagine you're in a club, you hear the band play a new song you'd never heard before, then you go home that night and think nothing of it again. Then that band becomes the biggest band in the world...... but then, you run out to the record store the day Sgt Pepper is released by said greatest band in the world, and on that record which is destined to become the greatest album ever, is that song you heard them sing years ago when they were just a club band in a dingy, dark nightclub.

that happen to me with nirvana....helped a scruffy band load in at a party in santa cruz that blew me away (being a deadhead) , didnt get their name, said they were on their way to LA to record, and a year later i literally dropped my lunch on the floor watching mtv when teen spirit came on...holy fuck moment...that DAY changed everything everyone was talking about it that night
@@deadlotCamper Wow that had to be something. Proves when you go to a club or bar and see some unknown band playing one of their original songs you just never know where they might go.

That's correct. Paul was in his late teens when he wrote "When I'm 64", in the vane of the music that his dad, James, performed. James had his own jazz band in the 20s, called the "Jim Mac band". When the electrics would go out during their stints in Hamburg, Paul would go over to the piano and also play "When I"m 64".

@@BrightmoonLiverpool Hi, yes it was a fantastic time and great memories, I saw them a few times during our time docked in Liverpool, it would have been Ringo on the drums, it was in late Summer of 62.

Good for you. Admitting that doesn't make the Stones less relevant. They were my two favourite bands and still are.
Personally the Stones is a amazing band but Beatles was a different level the highest level.

I love both The Beatles and The Stones. They both are two of the most highly influential bands to ever exist. The Beatles were more "polished" and The Stones were more "raw". However, they were both equally talented.
No they weren’t. The Stones aren’t as talented in songwriting or musicianship. The only Beatle Jagger beats as a singer is Ringo, who is not a good singer. It’s not even close, but no band is close to the Beatles. Doesn’t mean the Stones aren’t a great band, but don’t compare the two bands. Actually the reason the Stones shifted to a more rebellious persona with darker lyrics and sound was because they knew the Beatles had them beat at that kind of music.
They played in my town of Fleetwood in I think 1962 as support for my dad’s band, The Zeros, they were booed off!

I've spoken to several people who were there and they all thought it was just Paul having fun with an old tune!

I stood outside the cavern 4 years after this....and it was a bit of a memory then...
people talk of the Cavern as some 'great' place..it must have been terrible with it being underground , packed with people and the smoke & sweat . I'm sure more than a few contracted lung diseases years later..it would never have got a licence with today's H&S regulations. I've never been to Matthew Street. Seen plenty of film & photos. the council filled it in-buried it years later. Would have been good as a museum to those times...

@@vincentl.9469 I'll never understand what the developers did at the cavern...theres sort of a modern high building on top and a reconstructured cavern club underneath and I thought I was in the old cavern in the early eighties...but I don't think I was...i suppose it's sort of a Disney cavern made out of the original bricks...add a few old posters and Paul stood here plaques who would know?

Just two years after this, just 743 days after this, they played in front of tens of thousands in giant stadiums.
It was a gigantic leap. They made their debut at the Cavern on 9th February 1961 - three years to the day later they were on Ed Sullivan in front of 73 million. Mind-blowing!

They weren't human. They were aliens from Planet "Real Music" and they were sent here to show us Earthlings how it should be done...and did they ever! I just listened to The White Album for the first time in years and 50+ years later it's still incredible. It was so far ahead of it's time back then and just amazing for 4 lads in their 20s. Never again, folks, never again! Sure glad I lived it.
The different styles of music they created was incredible, and the White album is the perfect example. Such an eclectic mix of songs, yet it works. Once in a generation genius!
Many bands have a 'unique' sound, but the Beatles brought a unique sound to every song. I mean, compare Penny Lane to I Am the Walrus to Here Comes the Sun. Except for the voices, it's like the songs come from entirely different bands. Lovely Rita, Meter Maid came from the same band that gave us A Day in the Life -- on the same album!

Billy Kinsley is a truly decent and modest man. Bowie thought fit to cover his bands the, Merseybeats song Sorrow..
Working with the criminally underated Jimmy Campbell was one of few Merseybeat musicians to progress to stranger things post 64. Liverpool Express were a fine band .
Also a bloody superb bass player and vocalist.
Yes I agree Billy Kinsley is a really decent bloke and a great musician and very highly regarded on Merseyside.The Merseybeats were our favourite band and I remember that event at the Cavern,it was the first and last time I saw the Beatles perform there.We even bumped into Paul later on Mathew st,he had a chat with us and was was very nice,not so Ringo though ☹

Never again will this type of talent produce such an immense catalog of songs where even those considered "Mediocre" would blow the doors in on todays "hits". Debate anyone?
Can’t debate facts. It’s actually pretty stunning that they all lived in such reasonable distance from each other. And then what happened going forward is beyond belief.
@@memphisflashfan1 Part of what made them who they were, what made them so successful, was their charm and their personalities. They had that because they were first and foremost friends. Mates who were all from the same area, grew up with the same interests, and could BS with each other and have a beer and just talk music. Paul and George knew each other long before Paul met John, they rode the bus to school together. So the fact they lived a reasonable distance from each other was all part of the great mix of what they became. Until then rock bands - or any band in general really - were assembled from the outside based on what was needed. Need a bass player? Call this number. I need a drummer..... there's a guy in this down who plays drums and is looking to hook up with a band.
These guys were school mates and neighborhood kids who sat and listened to the Saturday morning radio shows together, went to the movies together, and played in the street together like any other group of kids around the world.

Beatles are my favourite band of all time. Recently I have been really impressed by Larkin Poe. I see some similarities ie: personal charm, great songwriting, amazing harmonies, top level guitars, and years of interesting recorded music as they break through the music industry. Their work with Nu Deco hints at their musical potential.

Going by pictures of the inside of the cavern, it's a wonder why they didn't shut it down. That many kids crammed into a hole like that is a disaster waiting to happen.
Crazy to think then that their last show ever was just shy of 6 years later, while bands like the rolling stones are still around almost 60 years later

no idea I'M 64 was in 1964, l listened to that song on ALBUM Peppers. Wow had no ldea.
Ringo was the final piece to the puzzle.
Ringo had impeccable timing, and understood his role as accompaniment. But in that role he made the band better. Ringo was indeed the piece to take them over the top.
This is a good story that I've heard many times before and the like music never get tired of hearing them .This is a great Great Channel 😎👌 P.S. My son is now a resident artist in the cavern and does excellent covers of Beatle songs , I would say that though wouldn't I 😁😁😁😎👌🎸🎸🎸

My sons name is Ray Durie has been resident for about 4/5 years my other son Ross sometimes accompanies him . They do lots of local gigs around Liverpool they're Known as the Durie brothers . 👍👍🎸😎🎸

What other songs did they perform that last show at Cavern in 1963 ? And didn't Epstein promise 5 or 6 future shows at Cavern sometime in future ? Which i think they declined.
They did, as far as we know, a lot of their current songs, as Please Please Me was out by then and a number of hits. They weren't larking around much like they used to, though the power cut helped add some fun! Brian did promise 6 more shows but they never happened.

A few pics, and restricted to 500 by request of Brian. They were huge stars by then and even 500 was a squeeze, with only one way in and out. No health & safety rubbish back then to comply with! It was a potential death-trap 😂

The Beatles were a pop band (the best ever) that played a few rock songs. As a lover of rock first and foremost, I could never consider the Beatles as a favorite band. This, and the fact they didn't play live in the era with proper sound systems diminishes them in my eyes. Maybe the all time talented band, but I need to rock, not just bop my head.

That’s amazing, playing “when I’m 64” in August of 1963. Never liked Twist and Shout, only song they ever did I disliked.
In Lennon's words....that's a granny song. Most of John's writing was Rock and roll based.
Twist and Shout is by far the best cover song they ever did. They probably played that song on stage more than any other song.

If it wasn't for John the Beatles would never blow up cause he did the seriousness in the songs and Paul would do always do like children sounding lame music like "a day in the life" Paul ruined it with his lame part that he woke up and dragged a comb across his head or whatever or like his song "Eleanor Rigby" and other lame children sounding songs his only good song was "yesterday" like John even said all Paul had was "yesterday"
