There is no such thing as a ‘random’ coincidence. Something, fate, destiny, give it whatever name you want, arranges tests, challenges and events in our lives. We very likely have free will, McCartney could have decided he didn’t want to associate with someone smelling of beer, but from our own experiences, I’d bet we can all tell of times when we wanted to do something, but were being overwhelmingly ‘persuaded’ by whatever to take a different course of action, that ends up being one of the best things you could have done. That’s life. We don’t know why.

Word gets around that there’s a band playing up the road, then word gets around that the band is very good and it’s inevitable they would be meeting up at some point. The fact they all got together when they did and had Brian Epstein as their manager was just amazing. The rest is history 😎👍
I’m sorry to tell you that at the time of the Roseberry Street gig, Paul McCartney was in his back garden on a roof watching a police dog show taking place in the fields behind his home on Forthlin Road. Mike McCartney confirms this. There is even footage of the dog show and in the distance you can make out a group of lads perched on a roof watching the show in the garden of what would have been 20 Forthlin Road (if you would like to see this footage, please message me) and this would have been Paul, Mike and a couple of friends. Enjoyed your video. Was in the Church Hall two weeks ago, after we’d taken in the National Trust’s Childhood Homes tour - both very memorable. We also, by chance, attended the 60th Anniversary Fete in 2007, when remaining members of the Quarrymen performed in the Church Hall grounds. Holy ground indeed. New centre at Strawberry Field also well worth the visit, especially the memorial garden and Sgt. Pepper Bandstand. Great staff, cafe and gift shop. Love your enthusiasm, keep up the good work. I think the Danny Boyle film, ‘Yesterday’, partly answers your question about what things might have been like had Paul not met John that day.
Well done, Poirot. You're absolutely right. Paul was (and still is) a 'go getter' and, in the tiny world of Scouse skiffle, would have heard of a joinable band like the Quarrymen, would have checked them out, and would have talked Ivan into introducing them. As far as Lennon knew, the fete was their first contact, and that's how he would have told it. Paul has always stuck by John's version, or perhaps didn't want to own up to 'stalking' John. When he describes that second gig in 'Anthology' as being on a truck, he's actually describing the first gig. Well done, mate: that is definitely Paul in the photo, not that I knew him; I didn't shuffle into Greenbank Park until 05/12/1965 (bonus kudos if you can name the Beatle significance of THAT date), but I did get my first haircut at Bioletti's on Penny Lane, and (so I'm told) once made sandcastles with Heather on Praia da Luz (where my Mum's from).
This is such a great comment, thank you. I did not know that Paul mentioned that Quarrymen played on a truck in the anthology … I think you’re right, he just got his dates mixed up. And I’ve just googled the date … the final gig in Liverpool at the Empire! Brilliant comment, much appreciated. Tez 😊

Very well researched. You can't ask John or Ivan but perhaps Paul can be approached. If he'd seen The Quarrymen perform the week before and been sufficiently impressed to mention it to his friend Ivan, which triggered the Woolton introduction, then you'd expect him to have a memory of it. However, if not, most 15 year old boys could remember how they generally spent their Saturdays/Saturday afternoons (wasn't interested in football like most his age). The answer might be "No, I'd never have cycled over to Toxteth" or "Yeah, I did that once/sometimes" then perhaps his mind would be jogged by that photograph. I'm fascinated to know who owns that photo now. Have any of Johns 1950's friends been asked if they'd ever seen Paul around before the Woolton Fete date? Whoever that was on his bike looked a bit posh for Toxteth and would have stood out in a crowd. My apologies to Toxteth, no offense meant. Excellent video. Liked and new Subscriber here.
99.999% of people would recognise themselves in a photograph; even one from over 60 years ago. Paul could end the speculation once and for all. Incidentally, I guess it'd be impossible to pinpoint the 1st meeting of Paul & George who became best friends around the mid 1950s. Wikipedia dates it as being 1954, the year George would've started the Liverpool Institute, with Paul already in his 2nd year. I read somewhere that the catalyst that made them notice one another on the school bus was George's guitar. But I don't believe George had his 1st guitar till around 1956, as popular music was changing around that time, more than it was in 1954, for George to want one.
So, there's another idea for a video... we know that we'll never know the actual date that Paul & George met on the bus to school... BUT WHAT YEAR WAS IT?????
Just found this video, long-time subscriber (sort of). On the date of that momentous and historic meeting, I was about 1 1/2 years old. I would not be aware of the Beatles til some years later, of course (probably aged 8 or 9). HUGE Beatles fan ever since! Loved this remarkable quest you took, Tez, to recreate that magical day. And, for the record, I believe that was Paul straddling his bike in that photo.

Hi mate, as a lifelong Beatles obsessive, (and a Liverpool immigrant), I adored your video.... Awesome detective work 👋 I wanted to say 2 things... Firstly, you didn't mention the bricks that are still there and I thought they looked in exactly the same position as the original wall around the stage. Is this because you could see they were a modern addition? And secondly, as a musician who has had several left handed guitarists in my band lineup, I think Paul took his guitar everywhere with him because it's a nightmare playing upside down on anyone else's guitar and he wouldn't be able to show anyone how good he was on a borrowed 'normal' right handed guitar. I think that's why he usually carried it about with him. Awesome video my friend ❤
Sorry Alexander I've only just seen this comment! Actually there are no bricks there - the surround of the garden rubbish looks like wooden sleepers - I might be wrong but they're not bricks and there's no part of the wall remaining. And good point about the guitar! I am told he did borrow someone else's guitar on the day and he did indeed play it upside down - I was wrong on that point. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Tez ;)
Great article. I'm a huge Beatles fan since childhood, everything they touched seemed to turn to gold - even the hallowed ground spots mentioned in this article. I visited the Beatle places in 1991 including St Peters church that has the headstone for Eleanor Rigby, although apparently that stone wasn't the influence for the song of the same name. The Beatles story has almost a Devine theme starting in the lowly Cavern club to the most glittering heights of fame and glory. Its not even about the fortunes made between them, it was the legend that they are in rock n roll folklore. I have liked this article with a 👍 🙂
there is a significant wall in front of the stage photo. surely some remnant of that would remain on on side of the fence or the other. even if not above the surface some old footings may be detectable pushing a rod down into the grass there.
Apparently JPM was making waves about JFK being offed, and because he had global popularity and reach, he was warned off first with a baseball bat shampoo just as he was "falling off his moped". Then finally offed because he ignored the warning... JPM is long gone. How and why I have no idea, only conjecture. But gone for sure. Have at it all you Paul apologists....
That was truly fascinating ~ thanks for bringing this all to life I've known those pics since childhood in the 70's and this also is so well presented 🥇🏆😉
I don't understand why it is such a mystery as to whether Paul was at the June 22nd gig or not. Surely, the answer is easily available by asking Paul. Has no one thought of this in the decades since the photo was taken? The man's still alive. Find someone who knows someone who knows someone and ask Paul.
Wonderful video. It's so sad that the stage at the church is nothing more than a waste dump now. You think it would have been preserved given the success of the Beatles. I actually visited Woolton Church on a trip from America in 2010. It was very humbling to be there, knowing what had happened on that spot.
Actually, Paul didn't have his guitar with him that fateful day that he met John. By his own account, he played guitar upside down - meaning he borrowed John's guitar and flipped it over so he could play in the left handed manner to which he was accustomed. In the same interview, Paul says he wasn't put off by John's beer soaked breath - it was just something he noticed.
I personally think that if they hadn't met when they did, and the way they did, they would have met up eventually sooner or later. They had a mutual friend, and Paul said he'd already seen John a couple of times out in the street, and even then he found him a bit intriguing. Fate would have found a way.
A fabulous presentation. Very, very interesting! Could anyone tell me what music is playing in the background? I know it’s a classical piece though not perhaps, the original. Please help.
I think you are referring the piece right at the end? It’s from ‘The planets suite’ by Gustav Holst. ‘Jupiter.’ I’ve found it on TH-cam for you … th-cam.com/video/Gu77Vtja30c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=68-3HrFsaYB-CbJw. You’re right, it’s amazing. Tez
Who is Luke? 😂 Nice video, my friend. From one Beatles nerd to another… thank you for this nerdy Beatles video. We need to find a way to ask the man himself somehow…
There was a large publicity photo of McCartney wearing glasses in the window of a local record shop around the time of Revolver. That was something I remember to this day. Struck me as kind of weird. Maybe he was doing his Buddy Holly impression?
Thank you 😊. The mic is a small DJI wireless lavalier mic stuffed into a standard mic cradle atop an extendable (but retracted) boom pole. A little unorthodox admittedly. If you’re shooting outdoors(as I frequently do) it’s perfect for two things … cutting out wind noise and cutting out ambient noise. They’re meant to clip on to your collar but it loses some quality when you do that in my opinion. Tez 😊

It's Paul Pilnick of steelers wheel fame, he lived a couple of streets away
Absolutely loved this , made me feel old though lol. The research was incredible! Thankyou
Hi Pixie, thank you very much! That’s very nice of you to say. Tez 😊
Hello again, you are indeed one of our longest subscribers 😊!! Thank you so much for this lovely comment and I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. I came into this world 3 months after they split up sadly, but like you I have loved them since childhood. Your support is most appreciated. Tez
That chunk of the floor should be removed and put into a Beatles museum. Great work dude!
Ha!! Yes I agree Paul! Thanks for watching, Tez :)
Brilliant video thoroughly enjoyed, how you presented this, you made it so interesting and it’s great to know the history.
Thank you so much Jo, that’s very kind of you. Tez
my mum is resting in that ground R.I.P Elsie Rigby. Elsie at the back Eleanor at the front! you couldn't make it up love you mum
Wow Gary that’s amazing. RIP Elsie Rigby. I actually did a little section on the Eleanor Rigby grave in the first Beatles video back in March if you’d like to have a look. (Looking at where Lennon and McCartney met in the hall ). Thanks for commenting Gary and that’s an amazing story about your mum.😊
@@verynearlyinteresting i will do Thanks! my mum grew up in Woolton born in 1928 but by 1957 she was already married and raising kids in Wavertree including me!
That's really sweet. I hope your Mum liked the song. X
@@yves2694 thank you. I don't think I ever asked her
I still find it hard to believe that JPM came up with Eleanor Rigby independent of seeing the headstone first, although I read somewhere that JPM was considering Doris Mackenzie. He finished up as the Father..
Being a fan of the fab four this was extremely interesting. Thank you very much for this!
That’s my pleasure Rick. That’s very kind of you, thank you. Tez.
Thanks!
Thank you so much Steve - and apologies that it has taken me so long to see this! I'm very grateful, Tez :)
Best research I have ever seen on the early Beatles. Excelent.
Wow, thanks! That’s very kind of you Russell. Tez
And I spell your name wrong 🙄
Excelent! ¡Gracias!
Wow thank you so much Marco!! How incredibly generous. I’m very grateful to you. Tez😊
Great research and wonderful to see the actual locations thank you so much
Thanks John. Tez
New subscriber here--enjoying your channel and glad to see that you've surpassed your goal of 20,000 subscribers by Christmas!
The family and I all vote that this is indeed a photo of Paul watching The Quarrymen. It might be a challenge for any octogenarian to accurately describe what is happening in a photo taken during their teens, but it probably wouldn't hurt to forward a copy to Paul's office and see if he wants to take a look and comment : )
Thank you so much for your comment, Liz and thank you so much for subscribing. From your comment I can obviously tell that you watched ‘The Linda problem’ too! The way the wind is blowing I’m now beginning to wonder if it’s going to get to 30,000 by Christmas 😵💫. Thanks again for your lovely comment and for subscribing, means a lot, Tez
Very interesting and well done. The first photo, right away I thought it was Paul.
Thank you! Tez.
Hello from Hollywood Joe
Excellent clip. History bursting from every sentence and thoroughly fascinating with all your amazing and precise details. Thanks for making it.🤩👌
Very interesting. Great research and excellent presentation. Subscribed!
Thank you very much 😊
Thank you for this investigation and theory! Looks pretty right! by the way, what model of microphone do you use in this video?
Thank you. The mic is a DJI clip-on wireless lapel mic would you believe. The handle is a standard boom pole with a microphone shock mount attached. The DJI mic fits comfortably in the mount though that’s not what is was designed for. I use it because you you get virtually zero wind noise and such great audio when you’re shooting outside. Tez
Great! authentic veiw! as a reporter from 60-es !@@verynearlyinteresting
Great video! It would be great if you could credit the BeatlesWiki for its article published 10 years ago and laying out most of this info, including photos. When I wrote the article, I ended up becoming friends with Charlie Roberts, the photographer, and did digital restoration of 3 of his photos from that day. Thanks!
Hi Tim! Thank you for your kind words and thank you also for calling me out on that (I'm rather new to all this!). I have now added in my research sources in the description with Beatles wiki at the top of the list. Very well done indeed on your article and I'm so pleased that you like my video. PS I only saw your comment yesterday hence the lateness of my reply. Kind regards to you and thanks again, Tez.
Ivan inadvertently changed the face of music.
Thank you, Ivan.
I absolutely love your channel. Will stick with it until it becomes too commercial. Just a little bit commercial is ok, but not too much. 😉
Thank you Steve!! What a nice thing to say! I really don’t think it’ll ever get too commercial if I’m honest! Really appreciate your comment, Tez.
You nailed it sir. Well done.
Thank you! Tez.
I just found this channel, I love it
Well thank you very much! Tez 😊
Thank you for this. Love the music Holst Planets Jupiter. They were the best. I saw them in 1964. John opened with Twist and Shout. Miss him. So funny how the very spot where they met all those years ago is Very Interesting!!!
Wow not many people can say that they saw the Beatles! Thank you for your lovely comment Linda. Tez 😊
Masterful sleauthing there Mister Very Nearly. Thanks!
Ahh thanks Lindy Lu!!! Tez. ;)
Bravo!! Well done! Great investigation. 👏👏👏👏
Thank you 😊
Excellent video. Well put together. I would personally say that there is more of a chance that that is Paul than not Paul. 👍👍
Thank you very much :)
I love the title of your show!
Loved this video. A historical document in fact.
Thank you very much. Tez
You are so professional! Have you done this before? You should be on TV.. love watching your very interesting videos, brilliant 👏!!
How lovely of you to say that Lisa, thank you so much! No ... I'm an ex-banker would you believe, I'm an experienced editor but I've never been in front of a camera before - this February was my first time! I'm so pleased you like the videos, you've made my day! Tez :)

Ive seen an interview where Paul mentions seeing John around Liverpool on a bus before the first meeting at the Quarryman gig.
July 5th 1954 Elvis records 'That's Alright ' at Sun Studio Memphis
July 6th 1957 Paul and John meet.
July's a great month yeah?
Wow … I never thought of that!! I will look forward to watching some of your content this evening, I’m first and foremost an Elvis fan. Thank you so much for commenting, Tez.

So it was Paul on the grassy knoll with glasses, that fete-ful day?
Hi mate, as a lifelong Beatles obsessive, (and a Liverpool immigrant), I adored your video.... Awesome detective work 👋
I wanted to say 2 things...
Tez ;)
if this was paul he would have said as much nearly 70 years gone by
I bet Sir Paul would absolutely love this video. I believe you are spot on!! ❤️🇺🇸
Thank you very much 😊
Thank you it is great to see this documentary
Thanks Phillip. Tez 😊
Unreal 🎉 thank you my good man! Thank you. Long Live The Beatles!!
Thank you!! What a nice comment 😊
I have liked this article with a 👍 🙂
Thank you so much Paul!! Great comment, Tez
@@verynearlyinteresting ❤
there is a significant wall in front of the stage photo. surely some remnant of that would remain on on side of the fence or the other. even if not above the surface some old footings may be detectable pushing a rod down into the grass there.
Dude, this was really great work! Has anyone ever called you to work figuring out the JFK assassination? they should,,,lol
🤣🤣 thank you that’s very kind of you. Tez.
Well documented and presented account. Keep making videos
Thank you very much Paul. That’s kind of you, Tez.
Very informative. Great research.
Thank you so much! Tez 😊
Great video but blimey, did you have 2 or 3 Red Bulls before doing the commentary?😃
After 5 mins of watching this, I was loosing the will to live !!
🤣
That was truly fascinating ~ thanks for bringing this all to life I've known those pics since childhood in the 70's and this also is so well presented 🥇🏆😉
That's my pleasure and thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment. Tez :)
It’s great that you went there on your visit to Liverpool all the way from America! Tez 😊
I always support giving more recognition to a fellow Ivan. 😁
🤣
Great video! Good job 👍🏼
Thanks so much Lisa. Tez 😊
Agree
Very well done. Thank you.
Great detective work. Add another subscriber.
Thank you so much Karl, very pleased to have you. Tez
I personally think that if they hadn't met when they did, and the way they did, they would have met up eventually sooner or later. They had a mutual friend, and Paul said he'd already seen John a couple of times out in the street, and even then he found him a bit intriguing. Fate would have found a way.
Dudes about to cream his jeans standing inside that building “on that very spot”. 😂
🤣
A fabulous presentation. Very, very interesting! Could anyone tell me what music is playing in the background? I know it’s a classical piece though not perhaps, the original. Please help.
Gustav Holst , "I vow to thee my country".
Nice video, my friend. From one Beatles nerd to another… thank you for this nerdy Beatles video.
We need to find a way to ask the man himself somehow…
🤣 I do get a bit of stick about my accent!! Thanks very much for your lovely comment and I agree about asking Paul! Tez
You got your channel name wrong mate, it's not 'Very Nearly Interesting', it's 'Damn, that's interesting'. Great Video.
There was a large publicity photo of McCartney wearing glasses in the window of a local record shop around the time of Revolver. That was something I remember to this day. Struck me as kind of weird. Maybe he was doing his Buddy Holly impression?
What an awesome journey you’ve taken us on! Thank you 🙏. Ps. What microphone are you using? Sounds great 👍!
Tez 😊
