Miles has never been overrated, underrated maybe about his newer work. Anyone that that says he is overrated has no clue about music or musicians. It says much about the critic but nothing about Miles....a master!
+Sheryl Fletcher His critics are nothing but salty that he switched it up, and they couldn't keep up because they have no REAL taste or sense of music!
Miles Davis was always looking for new ways. This is an example of mixing pop music with jazz, using the beautiful melody Time after Time from Cindy Lauper.Really it is an amazing peformance, I love it so much!
I have many many versions of this Miles classic... but this is certainly one of the best in terms of audio quality, many thanks for posting. This song never gets old its simply miles at his very best for me.
I disagree, this version is better.....th-cam.com/video/VLEj7E8ORU4/w-d-xo.html They are very similar and were done in July 1988 a few days apart. Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland was 7 July 1988 (this video) and the Münchner Klaviersommer - Philharmonie, Munich, Germany - 10 July 1988 (the link above).
Miles Davis...Trumpet...Music...A realm that was and is special from the very first note to the last... It brings tears of Joy to my eyes, ears and mind! Oh how elated I am that I got a chance to actually see him perform live in the windy city of Chicago in the late eighties and it was just as magical... Let those have ears hear and those with eyes see... Enjoy Miles Davis and his soulful music...
There's nothing like a great muscian playing his horn so sublimely! I've seen Miles many times live and the only time he ever disappointed was at a Playboy Jazz Festival in the nineties. He did not interact with his audience. He only held up signs to introduce his band. I guess it was towards the end and he was ill and losing his voice.
Look at him. He doesn't care. This is a man who's been riddled by drugs and just doesn't even try anymore. I don't know why he is that way in this, but it's evident. And the audience isn't helping. He's playing stuff he knows isn't good, and they love it. It's this completely horrible cycle that is almost embarrassing for Miles, in my opinion. By the way, you really got me back with that comment. Nice job.
you americans get it. and that what you get who you are, who you are. there's no understanding of some sort of mis understanding we stand time.. time after time
Dear MMRJL, Okay. I would agree that any kind of art that makes somebody happy has an undisputable value for that person at that moment. But wouldn't you agree that taste in art, music, etc. also develops while you experience more, broaden your scope, get more mature and more conscious? I listened to Miles for 5 decades ( saw him live in the 70s and in the 80s) and my preferences are with the more free and intense times of his music, when he had more strength. But: Enjoy what you want and can!
You JUST Don't Know Music !!! Miles After Be-Bop Took Pop Songs And Mastered Them !!! This .... And "Human Nature" By Michael Jackson !!! If You Knew Where He Started You Could Appreciate This !!! Your Loss .....
If you haven't you should read the book "Miles... the autobiography" it's an eye opener. I won't spoil it for you and you can draw your own conclusions.
Dear MMRJL, yeah sure, I have no problem to agree with that. However my peferences are clear and in my opinion his concerts of the 80s would have been better without certain songs - like a road without holes in it . Yes, Miles did have his moments of excellence even in songs like Time After Time, Human Nature, etc. A master is a master and if a master plays a simple or even stupid song he'll add something to it that gives it at least a little more quality than it had before.
This isn't sad because he's playing a cover if you listen to smooth jazz it's the style to take a song you like and put a twist to it Miles to me could never do wrong with any song ....that's just me I guess
If you want to see a really happy, ecstatic smile from Miles during a show, watch some of his shows in 1973 when he was at the peak of his power, playing free funk, for example in Montreux 1973. This "Time after Time" or "Human Nature" shit is sad because it shows Miles's degeneration. But it's okay if it still makes some people happy. Everybody likes what fits them. Many people also liked Elvis after his time in the Army, when he looked and behaved like he'd been castrated.
A man should know his limitations. That is the reason why the only thing i can mumble about, and not sound ridiculous, is Miles clothes. It's true that the last years of his life he had no taste in fashion.

Sheryl Fletcher Yes. There's a reason he's the one standing there on the stage ;)
The trumpet is an extension of his HEART!
A CHACUN SES EMOTIONS,SES RESSENTIS,SES EQUATIONS AVEC TIME AFTER TIME DE SIR MILES JOUÉ SUR DIFFERENTS PALIERS.
Listened to this song today by Cindy Lauper and Miles Davis: pure raw emotion : sent , both, to the man that I love.

its simply miles at his very best for me.
i have many versions of this song as well and this by far is the best. I think it's how the background music blends in with his horn masterpice JW

fuori da tutti gli schemi
ชอบ มาก ความเป็นอัฉริยะทางดนตรี ไม่สามารถที่จะเอาอะไรมาเปรียบได้
Great version, Foley is really the best sidekick. It's the only time I ever heard Miles speak: "Turn off that f*cking light!"
loved the subtle unobtrusive percussion
Marylin Mazur from my Denmark.

О, да!
Slow but sure !
Oh Miles....
What is there to say after that arrangement and of course, the sound by the Man with the horn.
hey miles_
Tú estás oyendo las notas pero él no las está dando.
is true

Considering there is a link to a clip of him saying as much. I think Miles would have preferred Prince.
géant mieux qu'au Japon(qui cela dit est une sacrée prestation ) la vidéo casse la baraque
Prince is talented, but Jimi would of been a natural fit. Considering the circumstances, I guess we will never know!

...after The Quintet -last acoustic ensemble of miles- only Bach. bye bye blackbird

Make it 2.
But in his defense, it's also after his 4th (?) heart attack.
Sorry Dad. I was wrong.
