Father Elijah is an extremely intelligent man and is also unusually rugged, especially for someone of his age. He can reverse-engineer things in seconds, is able to construct powerful weapons from junk, outwitted the think tank, escaped the Big MT, traveled through the Divide, and do so much more. So he is definitely more than a rogue BoS elder hungry for power.
I disliked the dead money DLC. The only things I really liked about it really was the tragic storyline and locking up this dude and then hearing the holotape of him going through the 5 stages of grief in 2.5 minutes

It was my favorite dlc
I love it but I get it, it's not for everyone. I do find it interesting how divisive it is.
