  • 00:05 The U.S. State Department.
If you look at the U.S. State Department's website you'll find the number of U.S. citizens who have died "in a foreign country from a non-natural cause."
    travel.state.g...
The data starts from October 2002 up to December 2021. There are obviously many ways to die so I've only included a few here. You can see the full data in the spreadsheets.
00:29 Deaths of U.S. Citizens in Mexico.
    1. During that 20 years period in Mexico we see 173 pages of listings with 4,301 deaths of U.S. citizens which includes 1,301 homicides, 511 drownings, 451 Vehicle accidents and 383 suicides.
00:46 Deaths of U.S. Citizens in Costa Rica.
    2. In Costa Rica we see 20 pages with 479 'non-natural' deaths of of U.S. citizens which includes 57 homicides, 153 drownings. 23 Vehicle accidents and 67 suicides.
01:00 Deaths of U.S. Citizens in Guatemala.
    3. In Guatemala over the last 20 years we see only 7 pages with 160 deaths of U.S. citizens, 64 homicides, 16 Drownings, 32 Vehicle accidents and 3 suicides.
    01:13 Statistics Can be Misleading.
Yes we know that statistics can be misleading but after showing you these facts, I'm hoping that this might encourage you to do some more research for yourself and see that some countries are not as 'safe' as you think they are and other countries like Guatemala are actually safer than you have probably been led to believe.
    01:34 Visiting Mexico.
I've visited Mexico many times but never lived there. My wife and did live in Costa Rica for 20 years before deciding that we would enjoy a much more affordable and better quality of life in Guatemala than we did in Costa Rica and...
    ... We were right!
01:49 The Cost of Living in Guatemala is Far More Affordable Than Costa Rica.

Some countries are more dangerous than others and IMHO Guatemala is a lot safer than most people have been led to believe…

I saw an article online that discusses the presence of gangs in certain Zones in Guatemala City. Can you discuss the implications of this if true, for life in general and expats in particular?

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll put it on the list of things to review...

Those statistics are kind of misleading because Mexico and Costa Rica have a lot more tourists than Guatemala. I rarely ever hear about people going to Guatemala for tourism.

As mentioned in my video: 'Yes we know that statistics can be misleading but after showing you these facts, I'm hoping that this might encourage you to do some more research for yourself and see that some countries are not as 'safe' as you think they are and other countries like Guatemala are actually safer than you have probably been led to believe.'

That's the whole point, Guatemala has much more to offer than Costa Rica and yet people still prefer Costa Rica or Panama.

@@aersx5121 I beliieve it's just another case of 'perception' versus 'reality'. The peception is that Costa Rica is 'superior' but the reality is very different... Even Ticos are amazed at how developed Guatemala city when they visit compared to San José. My Guatemala brother-in-law calls San José: "Un cafetal con luces!" 🙂
