I am so glad to see this instruction. I had an adorable Terrier-Sheltie mix that was a rescue. Although I got her a 5 mos old I didn't know anything about her background. When I'd watch agility on TV she would wine and look at me like, " can I do this? Please, please, please?" I lived in Ogden, Ut for the first 8 years I had her and in Tucson, AZ the last couple of years of her life. Sadly she had K9 Asthma and we only got 10 years together. In 2006 I had to put her to sleep. I came back to UT shortly after and was sad we never got to do agility. I was more heartbroken a few years later when I found out Ogden has a huge agility community that meets weekly at the fair grounds but it was poorly advertised. Not even the various vet offices I called knew about it. So thank you for getting the word on agility out there- my Mooney would have loved it!

Also I'm hoping that as she sees the way you are petting, praising Shelby and Memphis, she will see that it is something not to be feared and want that from you. Shelby did wonderful and Memphis is very good at jumping. I love her energy and happiness.
I don’t think Oakley is scared of jumps or anything. It’s just that she’s getting old and can’t quite jump like she used too. Oakley is still a beautiful girl and it’s nice to see her do agility the best she can

He's still adjusting, but soon we'll start trying harder to teach him sit and down and stay and other obedience! Maybe when he's not so young and isn't still growing we'll start teaching him agility! Gotta get the basics first!
Our Golden Retriever is about 6 months old, and she is so fun to be with. Make sure you keep the bar really low on the jumps until he's about one year old because jumping can be hard on their joints when they are still growing rapidly.

It satisfies their physical and mental engagement needs so well! My 18 month old Siberian is an agility madlass! She loves it and rarely needs verbs commands now, only occasional hand signals. Of course she loves the "new peoples" and gets distracted at qualification and competition events, but just participating is huge deal, as you know. Her only slightly challenging obstacle was weave poles, but she owns that now. A low impact activity when she couldn't play with other dogs for a couple weeks after her spay. Before I knew it I had a regulation course on the back 40!
Thank you ever so much for this! It will really help! I actually have had 2 runs in my session today with my dog's 2 jumps when she did really well! Agility is very fun, and I would recommend it for dogs big or small, no dog is too big or small for it! :)
Love Memphis little bunny hops! I love doing agility! I'm currently in grade 2 at the minute and compete with my three JRTS! I suggest that you work with a bar on the ground first and then move it up to a really small jump ☺️
If you have 2 dogs one that is really good and the other still learning it really helps if the more experienced one goes first while the beginner one is watching so that they know what to do better.

What do you do for your dog when you take them to agility trials? Do you make sure the course is gated in? How can you find out if it is? Is there a website to find agility trials near me? I'm worried if I go to a unrated trial my Siberian will try to run away.

my dog was very shy when we got him from a shelter and doing jumps just in our backyard helped him gain confidence and he loves that he gets food and I change height and width to keep him interested an he's a 1 1/2 yr old beagle.
Do you think I'd be able to do this if I have a small garden? And my dog has really really bad anxiety (so much worse than Oakley), do you think she'd still be able to do it even though it would take a lot of work?
I just taught my samoyed how to jump today, I didn't made him wait, I was running next to him, but next time I'll try to make him wait first, so it won't be so tiring for me. :D We sadly don't have an agility class or course nearby and I only bought one jump to see if he likes it, and he does, he jumped over it even when I didn't told him to jump :D Now I have to see if it's cheaper to just DIY more jumps, or if I should just order a couple more....

If you really want to you should! I plan on owning a business with one half dog, cat etc. supplies and another half is where I rescue stay dogs and put them up for adoption. So I guess we both love animals XD
It's hard tho because sometimes the animals are dead on arrival and sometimes you have to take animals away from people who love them but I don't want to crush your dreams it's rewarding because you get new friends

Just a tip, I've been doing agility for over a year now & competing You're setting ur dogs up in a bad start line stay, they are way to close to close jumps and they are sitting sideways to the jump, they need room for a few strides before the jump & the be sitting straight on to it so they have a good focus forward. This will help them to know to go over the jump and not around & not knocking the first bar

As long as you don't have too much agility equipment, I think it would be just fine. Just make sure their is enough room for your dog to run around.

You're setting ur dogs up in a bad start line stay, they are way to close to close jumps and they are sitting sideways to the jump, they need room for a few strides before the jump & the be sitting straight on to it so they have a good focus forward.
This will help them to know to go over the jump and not around & not knocking the first bar
