    This is such a great video! Many videos are intended to tech people how to do professional agility. All I want is a game to keep my Australian Shepard engaged! She just recently turned 1, and in the summers she’s a mountain trail dog, so she gets to run 20 miles each day and chase bears and herd horses. In the winter we’ve been having a hard time keeping her active and relaxed and engaged. I did this once and she was having so much fun!

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was helpful! Jus so you now, 20 miles of daily activity is just too much for any dog. keep it within an hour of activity a day. Too much activity and exercise will help dogs o develop hyperactivity and not be able to calm down. Did you know that a healthy dog should be sleeping up to 16 hours a day?

      @@SaroDogTraining I appreciate your concern, and I should have have explained myself better. We have an outfitting camp 20 miles into wilderness that she travels to with us as our trail dog. She usually only runs that much once per week or less. She is a working dog, and that’s her job. If she gets too exhausted we pull her up into the saddle to avoid injury. I do appreciate your concern and information though!

    thanks Saro, I have a very bright cockapoo and she LOVES learning tricks. The point about not using treats is well taken. I've learned alot from this one video!
    Update: her first time she was not interested in jumping over the bar, she kept playing with the supports (trying to steal them away). She jumped up on a chair, a trick she already knew "jump up/jump down" but she's used to getting treats for tricks. I guess I have to retrain her tricks without the treats. She looked disappointed when I put the bar away. I will try again after a break.

I jump with my dog and if she does great i give her a treat. If she "fails" i do it again. So she is training agility while our other dog is traning to hunt birds with my dad. • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      When she is whining, it means that she is communicating to you. She is saying that she doesn't feel comfortable doing what you are asking it. It could be that she is spoiled, which is OK. Try the following steps. Place the bar on the floor and see if she will cross over it. Put your dog on leash and ask her, don't force her but ask her to do it. Thanks so much for a common-sense approach. I’m just starting with agility training for FUN (not competition) with my Sheltie. I started out by using treats and he was so distracted with the treats that he really wasn’t doing very well. I’m going to try this and I really believe it will work much better! We all need to work on ourselves and for sure humans need more help than the dogs. 70%-90% of dog training is dog owner training. If you do it right while having fun and be confident, your sheltie will do whatever you say and teach. Just pretend that treats do not exist!

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In most breeds, I don't suggest allowing the dog to jump high due to fact that they are still developing. I also feel that your puppy is still developing and is not confident enough to jump up which is normal and it will develop as she builds the stamina and the confidences that she needs as she grows up. Don't force. Let it happen naturally.

    How do we advance with the dog, I am trying to teach my lab to jump a little higher than she is used to but she runs around it. I also have to use treats because she doesn’t like any toys but once she understands what we are doing I will start taking the treats out of the mix. I work with a trainer and they said it is the best way to do it but i am still new to training large dogs ( I am also working with a GSD and I just got him today for obedience ) for I am normal to training Chihuahuas but any advice would be helpful. Also your dog is adorable and very well behaved

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for watching the video and your compliment to my dog. I agree he is cute and sweet and well behaved. To help your dog to jump higher, try blocking under the bar by some other bar or items. You don't really need treats to get it going. A great trainer won't rely on treats or suggest to use treats. That is a sign of weakness and not being a great trainer. It is a band-aid solution. Work on building better and stronger obedience. By improving the obedience, you will improve the connection and bond between you and your dog. Make sure you are not using treats when training obedience as well. If your dog doesn't like toys, try offering your praise. I am sure she loves that. Be more enthusiastic and interactive. Be in the moment. Be more animated. Focus on your dog and build the connection and not the results. Also, watch my new video, it will make so much sense. th-cam.com/video/yr80Lf90wsk/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you for the video. Isn't "sit" then "stay" redundant? The dog was given a command, "sit", so he should remain like that and where he is sitting until he is released, "OK!", or given another command, "Come". That is how I trained my dog. Anyway again thank you for the instruction .

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sit is a position that the dog gets into and needs a follow up command which could be stay or come or down. Sit is neutral command and needs a follow up command but the stay command can be on it's own. Also, sit is the position that it is very simple to teach and get started with the basics.

    I have a 1 year 5 month old Rottweiler, she gets a bit frustrated when she can’t make the jump. Anything that might help her become less unconfident?

      Just focus on lowering the heights for some time until she builds the physical ability. That may take few months till that happens.

      I made most fo the jumps myself but I am a kind of handy guy. If you are not a handy person, I suggest to get it form amazon. there are inexpensive ones and also pricy ones. Pick one of these. Get started with agility at home: amzn.to/39u72Zj

    My dog has little to no drive but is VERY active. the only trick he’ll do is sit and stay. and by stay it means lay down and stay. whenever he does a trick he yelps and barks and wiggles while doing it. Whenever i try to raise the bar he goes under it. even if i raise it a centimeter. Any ideas? i really want to get him into agility :)

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reality is that some dogs are not made for agility so you don't need to push him to do it and get frustrated. Maybe for now, focus on improving your ability to train and bring his confidence up. Sit and lay down or stay are not tricks. They are commands. Focus o training and teaching the commands first and then start working on the tricks. Here are videos for you to watch and get started in training him: th-cam.com/video/2CvtFcNJTuM/w-d-xo.html

    • @LLewis-vu9qf
      @LLewis-vu9qf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I trained my Pomeranian using treats; he wasn't into toys or praise. But as soon as he learned all the obstacles and we started working sequencing, I held off the treats until the end of the sequence. He got to where he could run my entire homemade course with no treats until the end. He seemed to enjoy the agility very much. Treats will work if toys/praise don't. Just use them judiciously.

      I have 2 girlies male and female my female does agility training and my male just does the distances better then the heights but anyways my best advice is to encourage him when he just jumps over it. It doesn’t have to be on command but at least letting him go over it is great progress and yes, master the obedience
