    I am back! Well at least sort of :D I'm excited to make higher quality videos even if they are not as regular as they've been for the past 2.5 years. What do you think of this new change?

      I had to pause at like the 9 minute mark, because, I'm ecstatic! I love your work, I'm really happy you're going to be focusing on projects and the uplifting process of sharing how art takes time and work and sometimes lots of chocolate (is that just me?). I think it will be great to see the process you take to completing each new project, and I'm happy aswell for us to get more info about a project! Anyway, we're here for it!
      Ok, I calmed down and finished the video. Still not very calm, but that's ok! In 2020 I'm working on launching a pattern line. I make apparel patterns, and my own clothes, so I wanted to find a way to share them with everyone. It's also a good way to improve my own skills because now every pattern has to be made about 10 times, and the directions have to be clear enough for people who haven't been sewing for almost decade (which is it's own skill). I'm not an illustrator though, and that is a major struggle with presentation, so I'm working towards a lot of smaller goals like photography and running an instagram (a personal bane). It is fun to see how many thing keep getting in the way of the patternmaking itself, I have two patterns ready, and they can go nowhere till I finish the rest of the stuff people need to make a pattern.

      Omg it's funny someone actually saw that in the videos I posted in 2019 haha! I guess I was too scared to change TH-cam while I was working on Snow Cat :0 Thank you though

      @DinaNorlund  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Oh gosh I'm so happy you think so honestly! It feels amazing to have had a break and finally can move on to something different. Maybe the reason it became repetitive was because I was working on Snow Cat and couldn't be creative with TH-cam??

      Dina Norlund That seems most likely, as it seemed to be just the same videos over again haha not that they aren’t good videos! But postcards/random creature/draw with me just became a repeated format. Everything is lovely & I ofc always adore your style, but I am so so excited to see more of your project process! Do as many episodes as you like! I always adore process videos, especially when we see you brainstorm & sketch a million times, seeing how you think, etc! Much love & good luck to traveling & suchlike!!!!

    My change I want to make for 2020 is getting myself out of the "research phase" of all the project ideas I've had and start actually making content for them!
    I think my biggest barrier in the past was finding and making visual content to represent my ideas. For whatever reason, I could never quite get myself to consistently work in a 2D medium and 3D modeling softwares never really felt all that intuitive to work in for me. When I was in high school though I had moments where I got to do sculpting with clay, and that felt really good to work with and my intuition could really carry me through that. I just in the past never had the opportunity to get supplies for myself. Now though I have been able to save up, so I'm getting ready to do sculpting in VR. I just have to wait for Valve to let me give them all my money lol!
    Another barrier I had was feeling like I wasn't at any sort of level where I could make the art for my projects, but I'm increasingly recognizing that that'll probably be a long road and I'll have to let the ideas show for themselves or I'll never let them be seen.
    Sometime soon I'm going to make some sort of introduction video on my channel to try and lay out my ideas and inspirations on what content I'll be making in the near and distant future. Thanks for all the inspiration you have given me artistically and that I don't necessarily have to be incredible at art for me to start my projects!

    I found you recently and your project-based approach to youtube was just what attracted me to your channel! I'm very happy about that. To me, it is difficult to not think of art in a project context and I was getting pretty overwhelmed with other artists drawing all this random stuff and doing challenges. And they turn out amazing of course, but I didn't see that working for me. And even before watching this video seeing that you also used to post other random stuff (less than other people still) had me doubting if I was a good fit for youtube myself. I just posted my first video. Which is just something random to get started and seal my commitment. You were the final thing that made me take that decision after all these years of just imagining having a TH-cam Channel.

  • @corpupine3505
    @corpupine3505 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Oh, HOORAY! I am so excited about the idea of you doing project-based videos. When you were working on Greylegs and vlogging about it I devoured those videos. It was so great to see your process, how you worked through hard things and how your workflow looks. I watched those videos over and over because I love your illustrations and they inspired me to work on my own projects! It's because of you that I had the confidence to keep working on a comic even when I wasn't sure it was any good--you just have had so many positive things to say as you work on your own projects that I always knew that even when things were difficult I could do it! I'm excited to see what comes from your channel in the future, so happy you get to make these changes you've been wanting to make!

    I totally understand what you are trying to say. Imagine you are a guitarist. In the beginning you are concentrating on fingering, tempo, chord structure and music theory. This the point you describe, "The challenge is no longer drawing..." . Once you are good enough with the guitar, the brain turns off the controls to your fingers and the creativity flows out of the instrument without conscious thought. This phase you describe as "...what are you going to tell with your drawings." You and the musician artist are trying to evoke an emotional response to your work. Dina, you definitely are evoking emotions and have been for quite a while. Focus on what YOU love and not what we are clamoring for. Matisse painted what inspired him and not what the crowd demanded. Love your work.

    YES! I actually subscribed to your channel because of your process videos from Greylegs. I loved watching the process, including the struggles. It was hugely inspirational to me and sometimes I go back and watch them again when I need a reminder that what you're doing is possible for me too! So many artists online just post the finished products and don't show any of the hard parts. I'm here for the hard parts! And I love watching your thought process as you work through things and solve problems when they arise in your project. You're such an inspiration for me with my own books. I know as a content creator it can be scary to switch things up because of the fear of losing followers or that people wont be interested in your stuff anymore if you change. But I totally respect the need for change! I'm here for YOU and I want to watch you do projects that make you happy, not ones that burn you out. If you love what you're doing, I'm sure we will too.

    The series of videos you did while producing Greylegs was my favorite part of your channel. You are so right that videos about projects are so much more engaging and inspiring than /just/ art pieces. And I’m glad for the people who like creature design, you’ll still do those live on Twitch. I do recommend archiving them though, as time zones and other things get in the way of live viewings.

    Start creating again when you feel inspired.
    You are an amazing, naturally talented artist.
    And those who fall in love with your art
    will be here when you return =)

  • @littlekitsune1
    @littlekitsune1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think my favorite thing about your videos outside of the obvious quality of art, is how humanizing you make it by talking through your thought process and such. It keeps you from being just this perfect art god that I'd never be able to match in skill or passion, if that makes sense. You're a regular person worrying about how to finish something or make it look a certain way, like anyone else. So even if my skill level doesn't match up, I still feel somewhat on the same page as you, art-wise. So that being said, I'm really looking forward to this change! My personal biggest issues are motivation to start daunting projects and see them through, so I feel like this will be very helpful. And my plan for 2020 was indeed to try and start making comics, so this is perfect timing!

    I totally get you. Actually, I'm doing a small project (for school) in exploring algoritmes (how they work) on TH-cam. It seems like quantity is becoming far more important than quality... And I personally dislike that :( I love to see more 'quality' vids that will be posted once a month or so than every week less quality vids. Not that your vids aren't much quality but like you say I see that they keep repetitive! That doesn't bother me too much but I can see why you want to change that so you can be happier about it and we can be happier!

    @LiliCanal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay, this is super exciting! I've always found there are too few "project-based" art channels on TH-cam, where you see artists work on a project from beginning to end over several weeks/months, sharing their positive and negative experiences as they go. That's exactly what I'm trying to set up for my channel. So I'm super happy to see you take that direction! :)

    I'm happy for you, I hope this change works out great for you!
    The reason I hate twitch is because I don't have 3 hours to watch a video, especially when it's live because I can't schedule it, and I don't like starting late/leaving early. I don't know if it's the same for other people who don't like twitch, but that's where I'm at.

  • @mehlichi3471
    @mehlichi3471 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm really excited about these changes as I felt your videos being quite repetitive... In my opinion this is something artists on youtube easily fall into. To be honest I don't exactly know why, but I can't find content that I e'joy on youtube despite all amazing creators on here. Watching this video, I think you gave me a hint on why! Chill videos with the only purpose to share a drawing with other is cool, but a project, from beginning to end, that tells something about the artist, thought process along the way, struggles, missed attempts... this is so interesting!!!
    Thank you very much for having these goals! I prefer much that the videos won't be as regular but of better quality and I'm looking forward to watching them!

    I never had a problem with Twitch (in fact I discovered you there, while I was waiting for a stream to start!). From employee to freelancer to digital nomad - you obviously like the path of freedom. And youth might be the best time ever to explore the world. God tur!

I’m not a big travel person myself (health reasons mostly, trips are very often more stressful than fun for me), but it’s fun to see the adventures of people who are. As for 2020 ... who knows. My garage is about 70% of the way through a renovation into an art/ chinchilla room. I love, love, the idea of being a digital nomad. Just travel around and still do art! I’m so happy for you and excited for your future projects.
    I don’t remember if you mentioned it but, are you going to take some traditional media with you? Like a little watercolor palette and just one good sketchbook.

    I'm honestly excited for you Dina and I can't wait to see what inspires you from the world. Go chase that world and us loyal fans will follow ☺💖💖💖
    (p.s. my plan for 2020 is to take all that I learn from art uni and apply in my own channel, as well as open a shop. So I'm aiming high. Also risograph is extremely fun and is friendly for the environment, can't wait to see how they turn out!)

    I'm so excited for this!! I don't think I've ever finished a "project" so to speak. But I'd really like to. I have a billion little comic ideas but I've never even tried to make them because I wouldn't even know how to start. But your videos have always been super inspiring to me so maybe this year will be the year!!
    I'm also really excited for you and your boyfriend to travel, that sounds soooo fun, congratulations!!

Bravo, Dina!

I'm SO GLAD your enjoying your process and you've found some kind of middle ground with your channel. I will miss the Random Designs though, those were always so fun. I will manage to get a lot of design into these videos though and there surly will be quite a few creatures in there. But if you want random creature content please do join me on Twitch as I think I will do a few there now and again, it also means you can help out choosing animals and designing it! :D

I'm wishing you good luck on your new projects and your traveling.

    Right now I feel the need for change in my life, too. I am a graphic designer and my full time job is sucking me dry... I even think about getting into a new work field because it is so unsatisfying.
    In the end people HAVE to be happy with what they are doing/working on. Otherwise you get sick.
    I really liked even your repetitive videos. They are chilling and yet I felt a need to create for myself again.
    I am quite excited what comes next :) to changes!

    • @DinaNorlund
      @DinaNorlund  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is exactly how I was feeling when I was working at my full time concept art job... It's such a strange feeling. Like it's a "dream job" so it should make you happy, but it's just not? My boyfriend was at that point as well and we just figured we had to get out and push ourselves into change. It's a lot more stressful now but oh my god so much more rewarding! Thank you very much for your comment, I am so happy my videos have inspired you to create again and I hope my new style of videos will inspire you even more :) To changes!!
