🎵 JS Bach - Passacaglia in C minor BWV 582 // St Mary Redcliffe

- JS Bach's monumental Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor BWV 582 on the masterpiece that is St Mary Redcliffe!
The reason the organ is out of tune is because the church were waiting for to turn the heating (the day AFTER my visit!!) on before having the whole organ tuned. It was overdue a tune, and I can assure you that this famous organ is usually in much better condition!
This is an excerpt from an Organ Recital I gave there on 14th November 2024.
Let me know what you think about it all in the comments!

I was in 2 minds as to whether to publish this performance as the tuning of the organ isn’t as it should be.
Please be assured that the organ is great health, but the church were waiting for the heating to be turned on (the day AFTER my visit!) to tune the whole instrument.
This is common practice, and my trip just happened to coincide with the final day of no heating!
Should I have posted this recording?
Gotta be sure to turn on that HEARING ; )
Yes! Your performance was wonderful! The tuning doesn't sound that bad on TH-cam (at least to me).
Yes! Still a very enjoyable recording, and that degree of out of tune-ness would be considered perfectly normal in many places!
All that matters is that you were in tune with this Bach masterpiece - and the magnificent Harrison and Harrison Organ is still magnificent even when the tuning is a little wayward. You don't need to heat a church with such warmth in an awesome performance: bravo, Richard!
The "Choral Detuning" is good. Johannus would try so hard to detune it 😅 I prefer that off in our organ.
Thank you, well done. This is the one piece that can routinely separate me from the realities of life.
An outstanding performance on the most magnificent organ - B R A V O !
Beautiful ! Thank you for sharing your talent. It must be so inspiring to play that piece on such an instrument in that glorious setting.
Riveting and exciting performance, proving that even an instrument with a "romantic" tonal scheme can musically serve the master of contrapuntal music, J.S. Bach, especially this sui generis masterpiece. The trilling leading into the exciting coda, the unique cadenza, and decorations make the performance special. I'm so happy you decided to published this, despite misgivings on tuning. Pipe organs exist in the real world, reeds and flues are made of different materials that expand and contract with different coefficients at different temperatures, thus the variance is natural. Frankly, one of the ways I cans spot the difference between a Hauptwerk sample set and a "real" instrument is how well the reeds behave.
Especially when the wind pressure drops when the reservoirs are empty
Excellent performance despite the organ not being in the best of tune. Thanks for posting the Passacaglia. Also, thank for the PIP of your pedal technique. Beautiful church via video.
Thank you for sharing even if it's out of tune. The acoustics are magnificent with your St. Mary Redcliffe
Glad you put it up. Enjoyed it very much.
I love your Interpretation. Best for the last sunday of the church year. There s sorrow and thankfulness - and both is to be Heard in this great organ piece and your konsequent calm and passionate play. Thank you... ❤
Glad you did publish it! Most enjoyable.
your opening on the pedals is brilliant the sofetst I have ever heard it - it should build up to a roar - a most appealing performance Richard.
Pass.acaglia the test…
By far the Greatest work for Organ(s)
Loved it! Thank you! Very glad you posted it. Loved the clarity.
No mater what ails us there is always Bach.
Thankfully there are instruments and people capable of playing them well to do Bach justice.
That was magnificent.
Thank you, Richard, for yet again another amazing performance video. The church looked stunning thanks to your filming. I know you said that the organ was out of tune but I thought your rendition was perfect; I loved the way the tune kept repeating throughout the piece. Thank you once again and look forward to hearing more from you soon.
Very lovely! My Saturday afternoon needed this! It’s been a horrid week and I needed something truly beautiful, peaceful, and cheerful. You hit the spot just right.
My favourite Bach. Absolutely lovely.
Fabulous performance - and some spectacular immersive footage too 😜😜
One of my favorites, probably my favorite Bach organ work. And you did very well with it, even on an out-of-tune organ. Thank you.
Great performance, Richard. I love some of the reflective and introspective registrations you have chosen in the Passcaglia.
The organ tuning does not bother me in the slightest. I have heard too many alledgely "perfectlly tuned" organs that sound a lot worse than what we hear in this recording 😀
Glad you did share this with us.
One of Bach's finest works! Well played Mr McVeigh!
Wow… I love how you play this piece! Your and Iddo van der Giessen’s performance are my favourite on YT. I have been listening to this piece a lot lately, as I am learning the passacaglia (don’t know about the fugue just yet)
Sounded good here in New Zealand 🇳🇿.. Thank you. Blessings 🙏
If there is a better performance of this monumental work (that I never tire of hearing) on a large romantic organ and I doubt if such exists, please let me know. Top marks, Richard!
Fantastic! The tuning - which didn’t bother me that much - is down to the differentials which appear between flue and reeds when the ambient temperature changes from that used for the tuning visit. I had hoped to be there for the live performance but Thursdays are a bad day for me alas.
Beautiful performance! I can understand why you did a sample set!
Magnificent Stuff Richard! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Magnificent! BRAVO!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Lovely organ. Lovely church. Thank you.
Absolutely brilliant.
Wow, Richard, you could have fooled me! Out of tune or not, this performance was sensational!
MAGNIFIQUE
This sounds very realistic. Almost like a real pipe organ.
13:47 It's the first time I hear embellishments added after the climactic neapolitan 6th, it's a surprise and sounds quite effective, and same about the trills in the bars before that. I'm a bit confused in the description about the tuning being done after your visit, so it was tuned after the recital?
Thanks!
Thanks Steven!
Lovely!
Dicen que compuesta por Bach a los 22 años.
