1996 was a great year in Yankee land and this song was HUGEEE at the time. I remember doing the dance at the Stadium 5 days earlier than this day. It was cool (then, anyway). I had the song on cassette tape.

Gosh this brings back amazing memories of being a teenager that year with that song (however annoying it was) being the hottest thing ever….at the time….and that wonderful 96 team. And Back then, Yankees Mariners was one of the hottest tickets in town. Yankees Red Sox was not even a thing.
It’s almost hard to imagine considering how far the Mariners have fallen in the last few decades. But those two teams hated each other. And Yankees Mariners was must see TV back then.

I was at this game. It was also sock night and it was fun to wave the socks as the Yankees rallied. It was an awesome view to look up at the Upper Deck as everybody waved their socks. However, as the Mariners took over the game, people began dipping their socks in beer and launching them off the Upper Deck. How come they don't show that in the video, because that's what I remember.

How can anyone say that they don't care about this? This day kickstarted the Yankee Dynasty. Gene Michael saw the potential in Jorge Posada's athleticism as he attempted to perform the Macarena, which in effect formed the bond between he and Mariano Rivera (he could handle the movement of Rivera's pitches dur to this athleticism). Nearly 20 years later, here we are.
    Thank the Macarena.

That "record" was a bunch of crap, and I don't think it was ever recognized by Guinness or a similar org. Most of the friggin' people in the stands couldn't give a damn about Cheetah Rivera (whoever that was) and the Yankees grounds keeping crew doing this lame dance. A handful of women and kids in the stands did the "Macarena", and that was that. So when Scooter said that 50,000 people did the dance he was absolutely wrong!
Anyway, as a Yankees fan I remember ads and interviews on PIX asking everyone who would be at that game to participate in what they said was going to be "the world's largest Macarena line". I wondered why it was the groundskeeping crew and not the athletes themselves that were leading the "Macarena line". Then I had a realization: the Yankees themselves were ABOVE IT! The grounds crew were on the level of the average plebeian in the park, and so they were the ones leading the dance! "Way to go, Yanks", I thought...
