Dying as a seeress must be terrifying. You literally get a sensory overload, witnessing trillions of flashes of events and people and every detail in between of the past and future and present, until your brain can’t take anymore and fries.
Ide say whats even worse is Lightning knew Serah was gonna die. She knew how the whole thing was gonna go, says it herself. Which is a hige part in why I think Lightning isnt the good guy she seems to be at face value. She admitted that she saw from Valhalla exactly how the journey was gonna go and refused to answer Serah when she asked about them going back home afterwards. She knew that sending Noel and Serah on this journey meant ending the world.

I think everyone was already prepared for her death, it's hinted at throughout the game, I guess the music at the beginning makes you forget it's going to happen so it's more of a shock factor? Idek xD
And this is why Noel and Serah have been shipped by fans for so long. Seriously, they made more sense than when she was with Snow! I mean seriously, they forced it down our throats how much they love each other and yet here Noel is crying over her and saying how much he wanted to protect her. Yeah.... Sorry Snow, but I think you should have shown up more than you should have in this game
it's because we never saw snow and serah meet, bond, fall in love etc as it is with normal couples. that all happened with these two (except fall in love ofc)

Lmfao you’re so right, refreshing, staggering and memorable ending. However most of the times ff always has bittersweet endings, but this one was flat out terrible in the best way possible.
I remember this. It shocked me at first. I mean, it shouldn't have, because they throw hints in your face that Serah's death was inevitable the whole game, what with them repeatedly telling you that her life span drains the more she sees a vision of the future. But I didn't really take that seriously and thought "Eh, she'll be fine". Then she actually dies, and I'm literally like "Oh...". The thing is that I somehow still had this small feeling that something bad was about to happen. The musis is SO freaking _happy_ and _sappy,_ like it was all too good to be true. It all looked to wrapped up and clean by the end. I didn't bawl my eyes out, but I liked Serah, and I _felt_ sad, and I felt even sadder for Lightning when she found out her sister died. That poor woman already had enough to deal with, including guilt, survivors guilt, and blaming herself for things that were out of her control, and as an older sister, she felt that she failed Serah (even though she didn't, Serah pretty much tells her as much). Still, I AM glad Lightning gets her back in Lightning Returns. This ending was a slap to the face, in both a good and bad way, and this trilogy deserved that happy ending.
I really liked that Serah died because it fit the narrative expectation, that Seers die from their powers, yet it still punched you in the gut when the scene came. Then they retconned it at LR. D:
Well they didn’t really retcon it at the end of LR, technically the people that have died are all still dead at the end of LR, it’s just that their spirits pass on to be reborn in the new world.
Mermaid 7 Yo I put about 300 hours apiece into each game and your tone isn’t appreciated or necessary. We can get into the technicalities of what is and isn’t a retcon if it’ll make you feel better. The fact of the matter is XIII clearly had a definitive ending that was completely rewritten at the start of XIII-2. THAT is technically a retcon, and what I’m referring to when I say XIII-2 was entirely built around one. LR is a different case, with a storyline literally built around saving everyone who has died and will soon die. Technically not a retcon because the storyline clearly established it as a goal. It didn’t change events in XIII-2 or rewrite them. I fully acknowledge that the cases are different. However, have you never heard the term used in reference to a storyline just not. letting. people. stay. dead? Because people do use it that way. Is it technically correct? LMAO no. It’s not. SO sorry. I REALLY apologize for using a technically incorrect term and I REALLY hope this long, unnecessary explanation sets you at ease.

It kinda reconned her death but in a way that made sense with the story they had built going into lightning return cause alot of people when they saw lumina for the first time myself included thought it was a reincarnation like what happens with yuel in 13-2 but then we naturally learn the trust and that lumina was the part of lightning that bhunivelze took from her that also contained serahs soul.

Yeah, and back then we were pretty sure we would get a happy ending. Before they released the game, I read an interview of the devs and they said they did FFXIII-2 because lightning wasn't smiling at the end of FFXIII and so they wanted to make an happier ending. So this was truly unexpected, we would have never guessed that there would be a third game after this one. So this ending was totally mind blowing for me, I love it
@@Arkounay Wasn't smiling? Didn't she get Serah back? They showed her falling into another time and space. The devs could have left it alone after this game. It's actually tragic that Lightning would lose her sister twice, and not even know this after the second game. I wonder how she took it, when she found out Serah died. I never played the third game.
I'd just like to point out that I always saw Noel's love for Yuel as a platonic, older brother sort of love. Which is still just as deep and just as valid. But his bond with Serah felt romantic to me.
This ending threw me for such a loop when I beat the game the first time. I was like “Yay we saved the future! Wait..why is she...OH NO NO NO WHAT. WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE’S DEAD. TO BE CONTINUED?!?!? WHAT THE HECK?!!!!” I just kinda sat on my couch in shock.
this happened to me but i was like 10(?) when i watched my cousins play it. this crushed me as a child there's no reason why i shouldve seen it. luckily boys being boys, they threw on filthy frank so i didnt cry to my dad LOL

Even now this still brings me to tears. This is still my favorite Final Fantasy game, hell maybe my favorite game in general. Its one of the few I can pick back up any time and always enjoy. I still get goosebumps every time too, the voice acting is done so well that you cant help but feel it every single time

Honestly if Snow had never existed, even in XIII, and this story was all about Serah meeting this guy from the future and falling in love with him while trying to find her sister, blah blah cliche blah, I WOULD BE SO BEHIND THAT. I cried so much of this ending. You CANNOT tell me Noel did not care for Serah. I can see it and this is one of the hugest and biggest reasons I ship them together hardcore. I never loved an ff couple besides Tidus and Yuna, I love Noel and Serah together sooo much. I dont care if it's not canon. To this day, I love Noel and Serah together💙

I honestly don't care what people say about this game. It's the most underrated Final Fantasy in the series. 12 is good but it's not the most underrated as it's known by. I find the story in this game to be more interesting and I can't even begin to tell you the good times I had with FF13-2.
It reminds of me The End of Evangelion where a seemingly happy (but not happy) song is playing and a bunch of effed up stuff is happening at the same time.
I remember being so caught off guard by this ending the first time I played through it. Played it completely blind. Didn't look anything up or anything that could spoil it. Apparently I wasn't registering all the little hints that are given leading up to the end of the game that I was surprised when it happened. Then as the credits were rolling it all clicked lol.
Noel and Serah fit way more together then Snow and Serah. It's just that Noel care more about her then Snow ever did. Snow say he loved her and all but i don't really see the proof.. Snow was a good guy in final fantasy XIII But in Final Fantasy XIII-2 i just feel like his such a jerk.. hmpf.. That is why i really wonder if snow ever really cared about serah. To me Snow loves Serah WAY more than Noel ever could. Especially seeing the events of Lightning Returns. I think Noel just took Serah's death hard because she was someone he wanted to protect but in the end lost much like what happened with Yuel.
It's true. We hardly see Snow and Serah together so it's just way to hard to picture them together. Noel and Serah look better together because we CAN see what they've been through.

Then there's the sequel, where no one believes Lightning is alive except Serah and she's very torn up about it. But Snow DOES believe her and goes to great lengths to help find her to make his fiancée happy. Then we get to Lightning Returns where Snow is VERY depressed over Serah's death. Not a day went by in those 500 years where he didn't think about her and how he believed he failed her. I don't know about you, but that says love to me. And it's not like people need to constantly express their love openly for it to be true.

Considering that he left his engagement pendant with Serah in New Bodhum, it was highly likely that Serah already knew that their marriage was on hold, and chances were, Snow figured she knew that, too. He put their engagement on hold because he thought that it wasn’t 'the right time for a wedding' (transcript from the Graviton Core fragments), not because he didn’t want to marry her or wanted to keep her waiting. There are other things. If you play through Sunleth as Serah, Snow actually APOLOGIZES for leaving her and tells her that they’ll search for Lightning together after they defeat His Royal Ripeness. Of course, that doesn’t happen because Snow dissolves when the paradox does. When Serah talks about the fear and loneliness she felt when turning into crystal, you can SEE Snow hurting for her. The love is not one-sided. Yes, Serah clearly loves and cares for Snow, and that love and care is very obviously returned. People need to quit blowing Snow’s behavior in XIII-2 out of proportion, because he was most definitely NOT 'a total jerk'." Like I said I have a guilty pleasure for Noel/Serah but you can ship it without making it out like Snow doesn't care for her. Also the above argument was written months before Lightning Returns came out so if anything is off canon-wise, that's why. SORRY FOR THE ESSAY :'D
Everyone says that Noel loves Serah but haven’t you noticed that lowkey Serah started loving Noel as well.. you could see it in her body language, the way she looked at him, especially when things got emotional. The main one being this scene when she told Noel “thank you” you can tell she really wanted to say that she loved him before she died.. she was just hesitant on expressing her feelings because of her connection with Snow but you can see how that was being overridden throughout the game. Their relationship was so much better portrayed than of that with Snow by tenfold. Serah was the true Yeul that Noel became a guardian to protect..
They took this song "New World" sung by Charice off of Spotify. So here I am. Actually glad to see this ending cinematic again. It's so emotional. I know a lot of people didn't like the FFXIII Trilogy but I did. I love this scene and I hold it right up there in emotional attachment to my nostalgia as the !!!SPOILER WARNING!!! goodbye to Aerith in FFVII. This song and ending has a lot to do with why I love the FFXIII Trilogy so much.
What the heck! If you (square enix) want to make Serah x Snow and Noel x Yuel, make it better so! If like this, for all this action, care and cutscene i like Noel x Serah more. Just give Yuel to Caius and Snow to Lightning =_=
3:48: Even you know it was coming, as a grown ass man, - 10 yrs after finishing the game - tears still burning, especially when Noel's scream at 4:03 hits you through marrow and bone.... Very unhappy plottwist and ending, but it makes the story exceptionally intruiging.
The Heart of Chaos paradox ending is the biggest downer besides this one I think. I wish the uhhhh the one where you foil Alyssa’s sabotage and Serah goes on an adventure with Snow alternate ending was the canon one. Probably would have made for a better XIII-3 than what we got, too.
Back when first playing it on 360, I thought I did something wrong at one point in the storyline when this ending came. X) Believed there was more endings than one after seeing this (not going to spoil by saying more, since have reading up on it later). A sad conclusion to any FF game I've played, but....if all the games ended well, it would prob be abit...boring,right? Soon gonna play Lightning Returns for the first time (yeah, I'm sure wayyyy behind on that part) and see how XIII's second sequel brings this story onwards.
4:05 If the ending stopped right there and left everything after for some sort of 100% ending, it would’ve been PERFECT. I feel like this world ending event happening RIGHT after you see your MC die invalidates the former. I think it would have left a bigger impact to make Noel holding her the last image (most) players will see. Woulda made me so hype for 13-3
I love how ffxiii forces snow x serah but ffxiii-2 noel x serah and then xiii-3 throws in noel x yeul and serah x snow which feels really forced and awkward??? I don't understand why they made it that way??
I think Noel and Serah were intended to be nothing more than close friends, but they look good together and feel good together; this, coupled with the fact that they failed to make Noel's feelings for Yeul completely clear in XIII-2 is probably what lead the developers to sort of throw Noel/Yeul and Snow/Serah in our faces in XIII-3, as if to say "No, you guys got this completely wrong. THIS is what we meant." Personally, Noel and Yeul together never did feel quite right to me, but I love him so much that I have this sort of "If that's what makes you happy" mentality when it comes to Noel lmao
... I THINK the reason why New World keeps playing after Serah dies is because there's still hope for a bittersweet ending. Yes, Serah's dead, but she protected the future. Her death seems like a heroic sacrifice. One life... for the future. And then the sky starts darkening, and the music cuts out because THEN it's clear there's no happy ending. Etro is dead and the world has fallen into Chaos. Noel and Serah have completely failed, and her death is meaningless.
Man. I swear. I've played this yesterday, and when Cocoon fell, I felt a weird feeling. Like, it actually seemed poetic. And when the new Cocoon came in the air, I though "Damn, that's it. Future is saved". BUT THEN SERAH JUST DIED. And from the moment the stumble appeared on her eye to the second the "To be continued" appeared on screen, I was just repeating to myself "She isn't dead, she isn't dead, FUCK, SHE CAN'T JUST DIE"
I know I've probably said this before but I keep coming back to this video every so often because I just can't wrap my head around something. Lightning KNEW exactly what was going to happen AND the effects it would have on the world, when she says she can see everything from Valhalla, she isn't bullshitting. She knew that sending them on this adventure would not only kill Serah, but it would also end the world. had Lightning not sent them out, 90 to 100% of what happens in lightning returns would NOT have happened. Lightning already knew the end result. it kinda makes you wonder if all she wanted was to take the place of a god even if everything dies to get her there, even her sister
I want to differ and tell you that Lightning also was gifted with Eyes of Etro but because she was in Valhalla, she is the only one that could see everything in all realms in the past and future. She also could contact any person in any time through dreams. Most likely she already knew, but as a Seeress, she isn't allowed to change her own fate to stop her sister's death.
sterling liechty a few hints were dropped throughout the game series. Quite a few story speculations from websites have written that. But it would be cool to find out from the creator himself lol
Almas Jabeen a big thing with the Seeresses was that each time they saw a change, it shortened their lifespan. and Lightning was still able to die in the 2nd game so it seems a bit weird that she wouldn't have since she not only saw the things that were changing before Serah and Noel went out but also during and after.
Almas Jabeen not to mention Lightnings entire motto throughout it has more Or less been "fight fate" she's ALWAYS been disobedient af in the games. there has never been a point where she's told she can't or isn't allowed to do something, and didn't end up doing it.
When i finish this game, it was a big shock, the happy ending music, serah's death and the music still on, and then valhalla is unleash, with the voice of caius explaining all, Noel feeling guilty...and then lightning turned into crystal...Caius won...wow
Me somewhat as Serah: I sacrificed my life gave it up over to death so that humanity can live, with their ungrateful asses. From now on I'm perfect plus perfectly beautiful. If I come back...I swear to real God I got the answers the victory to everything, coming back as a teacher to this dam world
HONESTLY. I definitely didn't buy a whole ass Xbox Series S so I could buy XIII-2 digitally and play it in super HD 60fps. If they put it on PS5 I'd probably buy it again.
Its been 7 years and I still cannot get over how unfair this was after all she went through. Couldn't she catch a break? First turns to crystal then dies ? I haven't really played the game that comes after this one because I can only handle so much of Lightning by herself without the entire team , so could anyone please explain if Serah really did die or is she really back at the end of the next game ?
This is like 8 months late, but. I hope ur ready for my story time. (also Lightning Returns spoilers ig, idk if anyone cares about that anymore) So Hope's new Cocoon was named Bhunivelze, but there is a deity named Bhunivelze also. He is THE God, and he gets Lightning to do his bidding (saving the souls of the remainder of humanity for the new world he is creating because Serah and Noel broke the world in XIII-2) by promising to bring Serah back, and even has Lightning periodically speak to Serah at certain points in her journey. This turns out to all be a ruse though, and the Serah that Lightning is talking to is basically just a soulless simulacrum of Serah, because it turns out God can't even see human souls. So his promise to Lightning is completely empty. Stuff happens, Lightning goes around saving souls while a character named Lumina, who looks a lot like a young Serah, periodically shows up to taunt her and to sow doubt in Lightning about God. Lightning eventually decides to fight God for a bunch of different reasons that would take way too much time to explain lmao and she beats him up real good. Lumina turns out to actually be part of Lightning and has been keeping Serah's soul safe this entire time. Lumina rejoins with Lightning and Lightning is now her best self, and the whole core cast shows up as the world is ending and delivers the final blow to God. Then Sazh shows up and he's like 'lol im late but check this out' and then Serah shows up and happy ending. The party creates the new universe, and their new world turns out to be our Earth because of course it is, and all the souls go there to be reborn, including the main cast. After the credits we see Lightning in france I think and it's implied that she's going to find Serah because for some reason when they went to the new world they all ended up in different places. So Serah survives but its kind of ambiguous where she is and what she's doing. So all in all it's a happier ending. That said, I can't really recommend playing Lightning Returns because even though it has some fun moments, the majority of it is really mediocre and there are some story beats that I just don't agree with/think are really dumb. I was so upset to have the ending spoiled just before I finished it because I googled something. But after a second play through I noticed it is hinted a few times or maybe several times, but I didn’t realize it in the first play through. It is a beautiful ending, I love so much about it even though it is supposed to be sad.
Final Fantasy 13 is something different. After 13-2's sad ending, 13-3 (Lightning Returns) sees Lightning returns and kills the bastard of a "god" Bhunivelze that causes all these. My favourite Final Fantasy actually.
Well to simplify it Noel came from a world where everything went to hell; he was the last human alive. The last person with him was Yuel a Seeress they see timelines, future and past, they see all the changes back and forth and it drains their life force. The sad thing is a Seeress is forced to see it all, no choice. So after Noel becomes the last human alive in his timeline he goes back in time to prevent this, here he meets Serah they go on a massive journey to prevent this. However; they discover Serah is also a Seeress and forced to see all the changes in time past and future. Through the game you sort both past and future all over the place and in the end she saw one last vision that killed her. The main bad guy had the heart of a God that controlled the cycle of death, during last fight he forces Noel to kill him which unbeknownst to Noel and Serah killed the God which unleashed all that mess you saw at the end. Too much or just enough, I tried not to go into detail xD

Lmfao you’re so right, refreshing, staggering and memorable ending. However most of the times ff always has bittersweet endings, but this one was flat out terrible in the best way possible.
I remember this. It shocked me at first. I mean, it shouldn't have, because they throw hints in your face that Serah's death was inevitable the whole game, what with them repeatedly telling you that her life span drains the more she sees a vision of the future. But I didn't really take that seriously and thought "Eh, she'll be fine".
Then she actually dies, and I'm literally like "Oh...". The thing is that I somehow still had this small feeling that something bad was about to happen. The musis is SO freaking _happy_ and _sappy,_ like it was all too good to be true. It all looked to wrapped up and clean by the end. I didn't bawl my eyes out, but I liked Serah, and I _felt_ sad, and I felt even sadder for Lightning when she found out her sister died. That poor woman already had enough to deal with, including guilt, survivors guilt, and blaming herself for things that were out of her control, and as an older sister, she felt that she failed Serah (even though she didn't, Serah pretty much tells her as much).
Still, I AM glad Lightning gets her back in Lightning Returns. This ending was a slap to the face, in both a good and bad way, and this trilogy deserved that happy ending.

The fact of the matter is XIII clearly had a definitive ending that was completely rewritten at the start of XIII-2. THAT is technically a retcon, and what I’m referring to when I say XIII-2 was entirely built around one. LR is a different case, with a storyline literally built around saving everyone who has died and will soon die. Technically not a retcon because the storyline clearly established it as a goal. It didn’t change events in XIII-2 or rewrite them. I fully acknowledge that the cases are different. However, have you never heard the term used in reference to a storyline just not. letting. people. stay. dead? Because people do use it that way. Is it technically correct? LMAO no. It’s not. SO sorry. I REALLY apologize for using a technically incorrect term and I REALLY hope this long, unnecessary explanation sets you at ease.

It kinda reconned her death but in a way that made sense with the story they had built going into lightning return cause alot of people when they saw lumina for the first time myself included thought it was a reincarnation like what happens with yuel in 13-2 but then we naturally learn the trust and that lumina was the part of lightning that bhunivelze took from her that also contained serahs soul.

Yeah, and back then we were pretty sure we would get a happy ending. Before they released the game, I read an interview of the devs and they said they did FFXIII-2 because lightning wasn't smiling at the end of FFXIII and so they wanted to make an happier ending. So this was truly unexpected, we would have never guessed that there would be a third game after this one. So this ending was totally mind blowing for me, I love it

I honestly don't care what people say about this game. It's the most underrated Final Fantasy in the series. 12 is good but it's not the most underrated as it's known by. I find the story in this game to be more interesting and I can't even begin to tell you the good times I had with FF13-2.

I remember being so caught off guard by this ending the first time I played through it. Played it completely blind. Didn't look anything up or anything that could spoil it. Apparently I wasn't registering all the little hints that are given leading up to the end of the game that I was surprised when it happened. Then as the credits were rolling it all clicked lol.
What made the ending more sad is that serah knew the exact moment of her death, so she made sure to thank noel just before she dies :(

Then there's the sequel, where no one believes Lightning is alive except Serah and she's very torn up about it. But Snow DOES believe her and goes to great lengths to help find her to make his fiancée happy. Then we get to Lightning Returns where Snow is VERY depressed over Serah's death. Not a day went by in those 500 years where he didn't think about her and how he believed he failed her. I don't know about you, but that says love to me. He put their engagement on hold because he thought that it wasn’t 'the right time for a wedding' (transcript from the Graviton Core fragments), not because he didn’t want to marry her or wanted to keep her waiting.
There are other things. If you play through Sunleth as Serah, Snow actually APOLOGIZES for leaving her and tells her that they’ll search for Lightning together after they defeat His Royal Ripeness. Of course, that doesn’t happen because Snow dissolves when the paradox does. When Serah talks about the fear and loneliness she felt when turning into crystal, you can SEE Snow hurting for her.
The love is not one-sided. Yes, Serah clearly loves and cares for Snow, and that love and care is very obviously returned. People need to quit blowing Snow’s behavior in XIII-2 out of proportion, because he was most definitely NOT 'a total jerk'."

Everyone says that Noel loves Serah but haven’t you noticed that lowkey Serah started loving Noel as well.. you could see it in her body language, the way she looked at him, especially when things got emotional. The main one being this scene when she told Noel “thank you” you can tell she really wanted to say that she loved him before she died.. she was just hesitant on expressing her feelings because of her connection with Snow but you can see how that was being overridden throughout the game. Their relationship was so much better portrayed than of that with Snow by tenfold.
Serah was the true Yeul that Noel became a guardian to protect..
We can note that we hear the bell rings exactly 13 times as in the spin-off Lightning Returns at the end (I don't spoil why we hear that)

I know a lot of people didn't like the FFXIII Trilogy but I did. I love this scene and I hold it right up there in emotional attachment to my nostalgia as the !!!SPOILER WARNING!!! goodbye to Aerith in FFVII. This song and ending has a lot to do with why I love the FFXIII Trilogy so much.

The Heart of Chaos paradox ending is the biggest downer besides this one I think. I wish the uhhhh the one where you foil Alyssa’s sabotage and Serah goes on an adventure with Snow alternate ending was the canon one. Probably would have made for a better XIII-3 than what we got, too.

Back when first playing it on 360, I thought I did something wrong at one point in the storyline when this ending came. X) Believed there was more endings than one after seeing this (not going to spoil by saying more, since have reading up on it later). A sad conclusion to any FF game I've played, but....if all the games ended well, it would prob be abit...boring,right? Soon gonna play Lightning Returns for the first time (yeah, I'm sure wayyyy behind on that part) and see how XIII's second sequel brings this story onwards.

I feel like this world ending event happening RIGHT after you see your MC die invalidates the former. I think Noel and Serah were intended to be nothing more than close friends, but they look good together and feel good together; this, coupled with the fact that they failed to make Noel's feelings for Yeul completely clear in XIII-2 is probably what lead the developers to sort of throw Noel/Yeul and Snow/Serah in our faces in XIII-3, as if to say "No, you guys got this completely wrong. THIS is what we meant." Personally, Noel and Yeul together never did feel quite right to me, but I love him so much that I have this sort of "If that's what makes you happy" mentality when it comes to Noel lmao

... I THINK the reason why New World keeps playing after Serah dies is because there's still hope for a bittersweet ending. Yes, Serah's dead, but she protected the future. Her death seems like a heroic sacrifice. One life... for the future.

And from the moment the stumble appeared on her eye to the second the "To be continued" appeared on screen, I was just repeating to myself "She isn't dead, she isn't dead, FUCK, SHE CAN'T JUST DIE"

I know I've probably said this before but I keep coming back to this video every so often because I just can't wrap my head around something. Lightning KNEW exactly what was going to happen AND the effects it would have on the world, when she says she can see everything from Valhalla, she isn't bullshitting. She knew that sending them on this adventure would not only kill Serah, but it would also end the world. had Lightning not sent them out, 90 to 100% of what happens in lightning returns would NOT have happened. Lightning already knew the end result. it kinda makes you wonder if all she wanted was to take the place of a god even if everything dies to get her there, even her sister
I want to differ and tell you that Lightning also was gifted with Eyes of Etro but because she was in Valhalla, she is the only one that could see everything in all realms in the past and future. She also could contact any person in any time through dreams. Most likely she already knew, but as a Seeress, she isn't allowed to change her own fate to stop her sister's death.

Almas Jabeen a big thing with the Seeresses was that each time they saw a change, it shortened their lifespan. and Lightning was still able to die in the 2nd game so it seems a bit weird that she wouldn't have since she not only saw the things that were changing before Serah and Noel went out but also during and after.
Almas Jabeen not to mention Lightnings entire motto throughout it has more Or less been "fight fate" she's ALWAYS been disobedient af in the games. there has never been a point where she's told she can't or isn't allowed to do something, and didn't end up doing it.

When i finish this game, it was a big shock, the happy ending music, serah's death and the music still on, and then valhalla is unleash, with the voice of caius explaining all, Noel feeling guilty...and then lightning turned into crystal...Caius won...wow

HONESTLY. I definitely didn't buy a whole ass Xbox Series S so I could buy XIII-2 digitally and play it in super HD 60fps. If they put it on PS5 I'd probably buy it again.

Its been 7 years and I still cannot get over how unfair this was after all she went through. Couldn't she catch a break? First turns to crystal then dies ? I haven't really played the game that comes after this one because I can only handle so much of Lightning by herself without the entire team , so could anyone please explain if Serah really did die or is she really back at the end of the next game ?
This is like 8 months late, but. I hope ur ready for my story time. (also Lightning Returns spoilers ig, idk if anyone cares about that anymore)
So Hope's new Cocoon was named Bhunivelze, but there is a deity named Bhunivelze also. He is THE God, and he gets Lightning to do his bidding (saving the souls of the remainder of humanity for the new world he is creating because Serah and Noel broke the world in XIII-2) by promising to bring Serah back, and even has Lightning periodically speak to Serah at certain points in her journey. This turns out to all be a ruse though, and the Serah that Lightning is talking to is basically just a soulless simulacrum of Serah, because it turns out God can't even see human souls. So his promise to Lightning is completely empty.
Stuff happens, Lightning goes around saving souls while a character named Lumina, who looks a lot like a young Serah, periodically shows up to taunt her and to sow doubt in Lightning about God. Lightning eventually decides to fight God for a bunch of different reasons that would take way too much time to explain lmao and she beats him up real good. Lumina turns out to actually be part of Lightning and has been keeping Serah's soul safe this entire time. Lumina rejoins with Lightning and Lightning is now her best self, and the whole core cast shows up as the world is ending and delivers the final blow to God. Then Sazh shows up and he's like 'lol im late but check this out' and then Serah shows up and happy ending.
The party creates the new universe, and their new world turns out to be our Earth because of course it is, and all the souls go there to be reborn, including the main cast. After the credits we see Lightning in france I think and it's implied that she's going to find Serah because for some reason when they went to the new world they all ended up in different places. So Serah survives but its kind of ambiguous where she is and what she's doing. So all in all it's a happier ending.
That said, I can't really recommend playing Lightning Returns because even though it has some fun moments, the majority of it is really mediocre and there are some story beats that I just don't agree with/think are really dumb. Thank you for tuning in to read my novel.

I was so upset to have the ending spoiled just before I finished it because I googled something. But after a second play through I noticed it is hinted a few times or maybe several times, but I didn’t realize it in the first play through. It is a beautiful ending, I love so much about it even though it is supposed to be sad.
Final Fantasy 13 is something different. After 13-2's sad ending, 13-3 (Lightning Returns) sees Lightning returns and kills the bastard of a "god" Bhunivelze that causes all these. My favourite Final Fantasy actually.

So I don’t understand. What were they trying to do and why did Serah die in the end
Well to simplify it Noel came from a world where everything went to hell; he was the last human alive. The last person with him was Yuel a Seeress they see timelines, future and past, they see all the changes back and forth and it drains their life force. The sad thing is a Seeress is forced to see it all, no choice.
So after Noel becomes the last human alive in his timeline he goes back in time to prevent this, here he meets Serah they go on a massive journey to prevent this. However; they discover Serah is also a Seeress and forced to see all the changes in time past and future. Through the game you sort both past and future all over the place and in the end she saw one last vision that killed her.
The main bad guy had the heart of a God that controlled the cycle of death, during last fight he forces Noel to kill him which unbeknownst to Noel and Serah killed the God which unleashed all that mess you saw at the end. Too much or just enough, I tried not to go into detail xD
