Thank you for the tutorial. I made one of these for myself years ago and we use it all the time. My sister passed away a few months ago and I wanted to give something useful to my BIL and niece and nephews to remember her. I used a new pair of her PJs that has butterflies all over them along with other fabric. I am happy how they turned out. Thanks again!!
Really great idea - especially when a full size mitt is a bit awkward. just a quick tip for those of us with less powerful machines that may have trouble starting on a thick seam. A "hump jumper" will do the trick and you can make one up in a few minutes using your scrap fabric with some batting. (For those who may not know about them they are placed under your presser foot behind the thick area to level your foot to sew across the "hump") Thank you for your very well done tutorial.
My family are always waiting to see what I've made for them each Christmas. These are totally different from others, and I'm getting excited to get started! What's wonderful is that you posted this early enough that I can lay out my material and make matching sets of all the items I'm making each one. TFS! I love it!
WOW! That is the first thing that comes to mind. I have seen so many different things to sew for the kitchen but they are always the same few things, until now! This is fantastic. I really needed something that could be done rather quickly and this is perfect. Thank you sew much, pun. I just wish I had found you four years ago. I will be subscribing now!
These look so useful and would make perfect hostess gifts. I particularly like the demonstration with the hot pot and the egg cups. Real life in action. I am a member of the American Sewing Guild and I have never seen an item like this. I can't wait to make gifts and ones for myself. Thank you for sharing this. July 2021
thank you for this tutorial. i have made one of these and have never stopped using it. its a brilliant idea. so much so i am making for my family as christmas gifts. every cook should have one
Hi Patti my name is Martha,I just love all your ideas they are good for gifts ,thank alot the mittens the ice packs and hot packs ,all of them thanks for the ideas have a nice day and god bless you .
I have one made up and have a second one pinned up, ready to be sewn. Really very easy! These may be Christmas gifts to daughters and daughter in laws!
THANK YOU for the video and pattern.... I have made these for young kids but just scaled them down a little. I did round off the corners slightly cause I hate trying to make pointy corners since they never come out right for me.... For hubby I am making them larger. It was ingenious the way you turned the cuff to cover the raw edges.
GREAT Tutorial. Very easy to follow. Thanks. You are an inspiration to us who "waste not, want not." I think I would prefer cotton batting instead of "poly". But that's just my preference. On second thought, I might opt for 2 layers of insulbright. I'm kind of a Klutz, and if there's a possibility of getting burned, well.........
Yes, I like cotton batting as well. I had lots of poly batting that I wanted to use up so that worked for me. Being that they are used mostly for stove top and microwave use you won’t need to much filling. If it seems bulky to you then sew across the middle between the thumb and finger pockets to help it bend when using them.
I just made one and your tutorial made it very easy. I used my walking foot and the layers held together with no fuss as I sewed. I love the finished product. Thank you for this tutorial!
Not everyone has a walking foot so wanted to show viewers what it would be like to sew with out one, but I would have preferred using my walking foot too!
Thank you so much for this great tutorial. This finger thumb pattern is so much easier than the larger ones, I think it will give me a better grip, because I sometimes have issues with larger or other ones. This is great!!!
Just loved your pattern. Easy and neat. I am making a bunch for our trailer friends for our annual fishing camp. They are so easy and beautiful results! Great instructions!,
Haha. A friend of mine just asked me today if I added eyes to the pot holders. Great minds think alike! Go for it. It will be cute. I was being silly in the video making it look like a puppet.
I was just thinking the same thing about the eyes. What a delightful idea instead of oven gloves. I'm beginning to suffer with arthritis in my hands and I find oven gloves so bulky. These would be ideal for most things. I can't wait to have a go. Thank you so much, Patti, for doing this video :)
Great video. I’m making these as gifts and for myself. Just want you to know that Insul-Bright does have 2 different sides. The one with the most metal should be facing the heat source, so touching the fabric.
Yes, usually there is two different sides. There are different types of this product. If I’m not mistaken, I believe I mention in the video to have the silver facing the palm of your hand.
Very interesting - and I loved the little "puppet show" at the end. I might make a few of these, since I've been making so many mug rugs lately...time to branch out and try a new thing.
Well that was very nice of your husband. You will have those forever! Oh my. I can’t think about Christmas so soon but it would great to be ahead of the game for sure!
Great video and super idea. My only suggestion would be to use all cotton- thread, batting, fabric. Insulbrite is heat safe already, but I wouldn't want a polyester catching a flame when my hand was in there. That stuff doesn't burn it "melts". Just a friendly suggestion. Again great idea and video, THANKS.
Thks Carol for the safety tip. Yes, cotton is best to use all the way around. I use mine primarily for lifting hot lids off pots and removing my pouched egg cups. Love them, and use it almost daily. I’ve never had them catch a flame. But it’s always good to stay safe.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I do this sort of thing for gifts and craft sales, so "have" to think safety first . Too old and poor to be sued. Thanks again.
Hello in France! It always amazing me when people all over the world can view my videos. So thanks for taking the time to comment! Enjoy making some finger thumb pot holders!
😊😄 oh my gosh you are so hilarious! I was going to leave this comment just from listening to you in the beginning of the video and then again you had me cracking up at the end! It's funny because I and made these about 40 years ago and have been wanting to make them as I got older but never had a free moment to do sewing. What I was actually making was very similar to this only on a larger scale. Thank you so much for uploading this video. You have now learned a new subscriber!🥰
As a natural fiber lady I know wool is an amazing insulator and since I have excess “bad” wool, I’m gonna use that. I just got to wet felt it first. Thank you for the idea!
These are wonderful to use and to give. One suggestion I have is to use a piece of tissue paper under the poly foil when you sew it up and then you can just tear it off when done!
I luv this idea thanks so much for sharing. I have made the micro-bowls and these will make the best thing to go with them because we always forget to use them in the microwave so when we want to lift the bowl in to the micro wave bowl we can without burning our fingers so cool. I hope you understand what I mean. Luv, Luv, Luv it!
Yes, these smaller pot holders are really handy. I make porridge in the microwave sometimes and the bowl gets hot and I use these pot holders to lift the hot bowl. I wasn’t kidding when I said in the video that I use these pot holders almost every day,
What a great idea Patti; My only thought is where the two pieces of fabric are that where you put your fingers in; is to back stitch; just to give it a little more strength!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Fabric is getting so expensive these days, but I really wanted to make up some quick gifts for my family to take home this Christmas! Serging up that last side would make the final look very professional if you have one as well (though I zigzagged and pinked for years! lol)
Unfortunately I don't have a serger. I like to show ways for the average sewer so they can still do the projects with a basic sewing machine. That seam is hidden so at least it doesn't show. But, I hear you. It would look more professional for sure.
These are super cute - I'm definately going to make some for my xmas gifts this year. Sorry I have only just found you and subscribed - thanks for sharing.
They have a small layer of insulate which will protect you from heat but they are not real heavy duty for oven use but I have taken light things out of the oven. Just be careful. They are more for stove top.
Its funny that you mentioned that because I felt I should have mentioned that in this video. I usually have one for paper and one for material. And as you can see I was making a few passes with the rotary cutter because my blade was getting dull.
What a cutecidea! However I would recommend using 'cotton' batting as opposed to a polyester batter. Actually I think im going to use insulbrite for the entire project. This will be a handy tool in the kitchen!

I know this is a compact mitt, but I'm wondering where I could add a loop to hang when not in use? Nice tutorial, I've gathered my scraps and now i'm about to try and make one (or a handful)!
I would add it to the thumb section before you sew it across the seam and then when you turn it, the loop will be ready to go. If you add it to the tip of the finger pocket it might get in the way.
Thank you for the tutorial. I made one of these for myself years ago and we use it all the time.
