    i taught my mom how to make these over 30 years ago. She LOVED it that the people who she gave or sold them to could never figure it how she made them!

    I’m watching this at 2 AM! I haven’t sewed in quite a while but just hearing the sewing machine makes me want to get up and start sewing again. Great video.Thanks for the inspiration!

    What a fun item to make to sell. The fabric is what really sells this hotpad. I love the piggies and plaid together. Thank you for craft fair ideas.

    Last year I sorted out old towels. thick ones which had turned thin - layered they made the perfect batting for potholders. My mother and friends were delighted and I use mine all the time - no special plastic needed, just some thoughtful upcycling.
    The piggy print is absolutely cute!

      Barbara Arndt oh what a great idea, my mother also made her pot holders from her old towels. I still have one and they are the greatest.

    If you want sharper corners you can leaving your batting to insert and fit inside after you've stitched, trimmed, turned and ironed it but before you top stitch it. Cut the batting a wee bit smaller so it fits inside the seam allowances. This removes bulk from the seam allowances.
    When you first stitch your seams take a diagonal stitch or two across the corners (which means you do two 45-degree pivots at each corner rather than one 90-degree pivot). You will have a couple of stitches at each corner that line up with the corners you trim off before turning. Depending on the thickness of the fabrics you choose and your stitch length you might need a stitch or two more at the corners.

    I know I’ve commented on your pricing before...you’re very talented and $6.00 isn’t enough to pay for fabric, batting, thread, your time and packaging! I think $10-12 should be the price. If I saw this at a show, I wouldn’t hesitate to pay that and be very happy. Great project and I can’t wait to make a few of these for myself. Thank you for a beautiful tutorial!

    I love this idea! I have been using my friend's scraps from her grandmother to make her things, such as table runners, quilts, pillows, and now I can use the leftover scraps to put together some great hot pads for her! She is going to love the variety of items that were all born from her grandmother's quilt pieces. Many thanks for this idea!

    I’ve been making these for years. I make them in different sizes. Small ones (around 4”) for coasters! Medium ones (around 6”) for pot holders and those get a layer of insulbrite for heat resistants! I never thought of selling them.

    I love the pig fabric! It is sooo cute!!!..... And I like how you did the zig -zag top stitching at the end, to secure the fabric on top to the fabric on the back. What a great fast and easy project to sew. I think I'll make a few of these to give away to some friends of mine. Thanks for sharing this project! :)

    I have done this technique with 5 inch squares for coasters. On those, I don't sew the centers down. You can put the base of a goblet inside and the coaster goes with you.

I'm just going to have to find an early craft fair this year because I'm having shoulder replacement surgery on November 20th. I won't be able to use my right arm very much for awhile if I understood the doctor correctly. I was glad to hear your Mom continues to improve. I will keep you both in my prayers. Top Stitch. It pays ti increase your stitch length to a 3.5 or larger. Your seam stitch length is usually best set at about 2.5. Top Stitch is purely ornamental which is why you can use a longer stitch length.

    • @mw54470
      @mw54470 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ffstew, the reason it can not be used as a oven hot pad is that it needs a heat insulated piece of batting. You need to put insulbrite in it. It can be purchased at most fabric stores.

    • @stew9stew
      @stew9stew 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mw54470 , yes, I couldn't think of that word "insulate" so I explained with "ouch" -- insulbrite is what I need to make an oven mitt one day 👍.
