Thanks for sharing. Your videos inspired me to do a grayling to camp 10 trip last year with a buddy. Went back a couple months ago to do my first solo trip from grayling to mio dam. Heading there again Thursday to do parmalee to loud dam strech. It'll be my first time having to portage. Also did a pine river trip recently thanks to your videos. Had jim and the horina crew take care of my car spot. Thanks for the work and detail you put into your videos. They've been my primary resource as I'm getting into kayak camping. Thanks! Connor
Nice video! Been following this adventure since you first started. Its a refreshing change from the usual backpacking videos. All in all your doing an awesome job! Definitely thanks for sharing! Rick
Yeah, I know how to pronounce it, I was just saying it wrong in that video, i’ve said it correctly in many other videos. I never claimed to be a paddler. Oar/paddle it’s just a word. I’ve through paddled three rivers and hundreds of miles so I believe that makes me a paddler. Not trying to be rude, but if I had a nickel for every time I’ve been told that I’ve pronounced it wrong I would be doing very well lol. When you’re from Ohio and pronouncing it wrong for 30 years it takes a while to get it right!
There are no water moccasins in Michigan, so I’m betting you had a run in with an eastern hog-nose. They can be aggressive and their heads flatten out making them look like adders. They’re not venomous, but people often kill them believing they are. 😢 We saw them often on Au Sable River when I was a child.
@@jasonwish- Probably a hog hose snake, could have been an Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. That's the only venomous snake we have up here, pretty uncommon though. The hog-nose flattens it's head to look like a viper.
I love your videos of this trip. I think the dam ponds look very scenic. Is there a lot of motorboat traffic on the ponds? If so, is it a safety concern or do they give you a wide berth?
BTW, we spent lots of time at Camp Au Sable because it was/is owned by the Michigan Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. My father was first a SDA teacher/associate pastor, then a minister for 37 years. The outdoors were our mutual true love.
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention it 🤣 The Colonel said it was just in case we needed to leave a kernel trail so we wouldn't get lost lol!
@@davidt.3673 Hahahahahaha! Actually, we had just finished doing a field check the night before we left and I decided to bring that huge ear with us just to see who would notice it and mention it 😆
As an avid paddler, I see you making two dangerous mistakes. First, no emergency paddle. Now you know why I always carry one. Really! Losing your paddle with dozens of miles to go! What would you do if you lost it, or damaged it? Splitting and sharing your paddle? So, you drop it and it sinks. Back to square one. The second error is unforgivable; paddling without wearing your PFD. People drown in seconds. You end up in the water because of an accident. Imagine if you hit your head on the concrete at that portage! You probably would have died, even with then colonel there. I live on Lake Huron and almost every year someone frowns near my home. We saw two people drown from our back yard. It happens so fast. Please be more careful.
It’s a very lazy safe river and there’s no way I would wear a life jacket on that river but that’s just me. There is definitely a time and place for PFD’s. A spare paddle would’ve definitely been wise. And there were several areas to exit the river before going into Huron right at the very end.
Second!!!!! 😎 So how many dam ponds are there? That's fun to say.😀 Fun times! Really enjoyed your journey, and your Bob Ross moment with the "happy little tree's" around 12:58. Was that a water moccasin? Several years ago, my brother and I had one to try getting into our boat, while fishing Ky. lake. Stay safe. Roger
Hey Colonel! My uncle Matt went ocean fishing this summer. He got about two miles offshore on his way to an island when his paddle blade just fell off the shaft! Of course he did not bring a spare that day. We had a good laugh. You definitely need the spare Paddle from time to time!
@@RiverKingsKayak definitely gonna start packing one! Especially if Jason was to loose his. I bet I could sell him my spare for 3 to 5 times what I paid for it😂
You guys screw with our wildlife too much. Purposely disturbing wildlife is illegal don't you know. You also have no problem trespassing on other people's property. Both are huge no no's on that river. Other than that it was pretty entertaining and we'll shot. More recording of the river in front of you and less of your mug would've made it better.
Bravo! And yes...now you know! I have broken paddles before as well. Good video!
I kinda wanted to see the Colonel paddle with his arms 🤣🤣

That is so awesome to hear, thank you so much! Hope you had another successful trip!
Fantastic change of weather. Love a good fog in the morning, gives Nature a totally different feel.
It was certainly beautiful, just wish the sun would have come out sooner like the forcast called for!

Thanks or following alone in our adventure Rick! Lots more backpacking coming soon!
Been down that river since I was 12 I’m 50 now ....I tether my paddle to the boat and I still bring a half paddle with me.... great video
Thanks! It is a beautiful river for sure, just too many ponds 😁
Was just at lumbermans monument sand dune, so much fun going down sucks ass going back up
Jason ,love your videos!! And the "colonel" is a part of them! Bonnie and Clyde!,or something like that? Great stuff yak bro!
Thanks Ryan, so glad you enjoy them! Can’t wait for another Michigan yak trip!
Awesome adventure. The snakes looks like an Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake, could be wrong, but that is what it looked like. Great video.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it!
Snake might be a Pit Viper common in that area.
I just started watching a few days ago and I love this channel .you two are great
Thanks James! We always try to have a great time on the river, glad you are enjoying them!
The Ausable is in NY - the Au Sable is in MI.
Really looked like a great trip, Jason! Man, that was one nasty looking snake!
Snakes don't normally bother me but this one was not too happy with me lol. Thanks Randy!
Fun video, but...It's Au Sable (like Cobble) and we use "paddles" to paddle kayaks. Oars are for rowboats. You gave yourself away as not a paddler.

Enjoyed the video! Not sure what kind of snake that was, but it definitely did not like you getting to close. lol
Thanks Chris! I don't like seeing snakes in the water....kinda like the same feeling of seeing a shark or a gator, lol.

great vid looking forward to last part
Thanks Tony, I'm ready for some more backpackin now!
What kind of snake is this, guys? The kind you leave alone....
Lol, you got that right! My curiosity got the best of me 😁

I wouldn’t be worried about motorboat traffic but I was there in September and it was very quiet. July and August would probably be a little busier.
BTW, we spent lots of time at Camp Au Sable because it was/is owned by the Michigan Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. My father was first a SDA teacher/associate pastor, then a minister for 37 years. The outdoors were our mutual true love.
What an awesome place to grow up!
That's an Eastern Hog Nose snake. They flair the sides of their heads and are swimmers.
Thanks
Do you have to reserve camp sites or is it first come first serve.
Great video !
reserved ahead of time on line, and we didn't do it correctly but it worked out since it was the off season and mid week.
Northern water snake non venomous but are a bit aggressive
Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake.
Lol, maybe...
That snack is a water moccasin
Glad it didn’t attack me
As an ultra-light guy I'm sure everything on Jason's kayak has a purpose I just can't figure out the purpose of the ear of corn
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention it 🤣 The Colonel said it was just in case we needed to leave a kernel trail so we wouldn't get lost lol!
Why does Jason still have an ear of corn on his kayak?
What ear of corn???
In all 3 videos he has an ear of corn in the front of his kayak

jl Highfield it sure does! SPF 45!
Was this camp site 063w?
Close it was site 60. One of my favorites is 41 on the island near Lumbermans Monument sand dune.
That's a hognose snake, puff ader, harmless
I figured it was harmless but still scared me a little when I thought it was going to rise up out of the water lol.

There is no good reason to harass ducks, swans, snakes or any other wildlife. Grow up!
How was I harassing ducks swans and other wildlife?! And if I feel like harassing a snake I will!
