When I started thinking "they did a hell of a job with the animation of putting gloves on..." it finally hit me.. and in that instant, the next hour of my life had been decided. This is peak youtube, peak vintage racing footage, and has that exceedingly rare quality of making you completely forget about all the things you can't stand about youtube. Then it sinks in: it's the circa-2006 internet-open frontier, full of promise, an exciting treasure trove for any niche passion you have-the existential privacy and safety threats are still years off from souring the experience. You drove this beautiful piece of Porsche history wonderfully! You obviously have a great understanding of the unique dynamics of driving a Porsche and how they can behave when the throttle isn’t used correctly! All these cars, while obviously race cars, are also a living example of racing history! They should be driven in competition, but not beaten on unnecessarily! Man these older Porsche’s weren’t blistering fast but they handled very well, braked well and provided more smiles per mile than we as drivers had a right to experience! Thanks for posting this wonderful event and showing others how to race!
I've my 1970 Alfa Romeo GT (stepnose) waiting in my garage. I'm halfway through this video and I decided I'm going to pause it and go have a drive in it. Can't replicate your race but at least I stop hitting the floor with my foot trying to floor an invisible accelerator:) awesome video! Looking forward to see more of those!
Enjoyed this video very much! Especially like the driver's style, so smooth and calculated...deliberate shifts with trailing throttle and smooth apexing and braking points! Bravo! 👏😎👍
Picture quality, sound are amazing. With a headset on, it's like we're inside the cabine with you. Just missing the speed : 6 minutes+ for a 13.626km track is quite slow for an "highway". But who are we to judge you? Nobody. Just enjoy and share! Beautiful experience. Thank you.
Thanks so much for your words !!! It is indeed « not fast », main reason being that the car has a gear ratio made more for rally than track, so top speed is not huge which is obviously not the best for a track like Le Mans. And second, we just try to be « smooth » as much as we can with the car and give ourselves margin not to make mistakes and be sure to finish so we lose some seconds there as well for sure :)
It's so colorful there! The curbing, the sky, the stands... what a cool place. Your car was excellent, and it was fun to watch you wheel that thing around. Keep driving it hard--don't let it off easy just because it's getting older!
Other than the car itself which I obviously wanted to preserve it is also a lot about the cars around and their values that can be close to 10x that 911...!
@@godsavethewheelsYes absolutely. I’d imagine that part is a little stressful but it looks like a ton of fun. I’ve driven a 993 a few times before. Not to sound critical at all, because I’m aware that the floor hinged pedals can be a little tricky. Were you having trouble downshifting smoothly?
Not so much trouble, but - these older Porsche/VW gearbox are not the easiest to deal with (imo) and the car kind of needs to stay high in RPMs, so downshifts may sound loud. Also, I must concede I am more comfortable with 4-speed high-hp cars (like the Mustang or Cobra in my other videos), rather than Porsche!
@@godsavethewheelsDo you mind telling me what helmet and camera you were using? Maybe even the mount too? I’ll be doing some track days next month and would love similar looking footage if possible
Sure - Helmet - na.stand21.com/products.r-2/helmets.r-7/ivos-hi-tech-open-face-double-duty.f-596.html I like open face helmet when racing in enclosed cars; otherwise I run too hot haha Camera - GoPro Hero 10 shot in 4K 60fps with Horizon Leveling mode; I have not tried without horizon leveling but it may look nice too. Mount - something like this gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/grab-bag/AGBAG-002.html - this way you can angle the camera as you want to have a good view. Finally, we had mounted a cigaret lighter usb-c cable charger so the gopro could be plugged in, otherwise the battery gets drained very quickly. If you race/track day with a full face helmet, there are great chin mounts available that would definitely do the trick too!
People mention how they thought this was a game (me included). But I'll tell you what games don't get. The shifting. Yeah, games simulate the clutch and rotating mass, and some even simulate the synchro. But no game ever gives you the feeling of shifting an old ornery transmission. The way it'll fight you when you don't give it time to synchronize, and when your RPMs are too far off the wheel speed sometimes it just refuses to go into gear without a fight. Like when you were downshifting into the chicanes. You have to juggle the rpm by blipping the throttle until the transmission and the output shaft come to an agreement. As a wise man once said, "the transmission is a bureaucracy, sometimes you have to gerrymander to get use of the gears".
Loved it. A few questions. 1) How did you get to do it? Did you qualify with a racing license or something? Or was it simply registering, safety-checking the car, and get out there? 2) Why is your main tachometer disabled and a new one installed? Change of redline or something?
Thanks for your comment! 1) Le Mans Classic is considered to be an International Racing Event so you need an International racing license to race there; this basically means that you need to have done a certain number of National racing events while finishing them safely, which then allows you to apply for an International license to allow you to apply for events like LMC. Then your car needs to be eligible for the event you apply it for - in the case of Le Mans Classic, it needs to be a model that raced at Le Mans. Then the car needs to have the same specs as in period, which is ruled by its 'PTH', basically a technical passport that the tech stewards validate before allowing you to race, along with all of the safety features for both the car and the driver(s). 2) Main tach not as accurate ;)

It’s actually real life! Just that the camera has a low fps rating, that’s why it doesn’t pick um people’s movements.
