i picked one of these up to use an RX 480, and i could not get it to work at all. it was the biggest pain, i tried everything. sold the rx 480, popped in a gtx 1070 and it worked fine.
rtx cards support alienware amplifier ? im waiting for videos on youtube to confirm this. such that i can buy the rtx card and amplifier. else i need to wait for dell to make new one for rtx cards. plz confirm me. thanks.
I was thinking the same thing. Once the 10 series GPUs are a few years old I will be grabbing an amplifier and whatever current gen card is out for 2019. This amp increases the life cycle of your laptop by several years. Well worth the investment.
For those that concerns about if this can handle future performance and video card upgrade. Here's a simple math. A 4K resolution is between 10 to 15 mb in size. So each frame is 10 to 15 mb. Now, when you're video gaming at 4K resolution running at about 60 frames per second. So take the highest picture frame at 15 megabytes x 60 frames/s = 900 megabytes/second at 4K!! So theoretically, you can use a Geforce Titan X Pascal on a PCIe 3.0 x 4 lanes and you will still be OK. Because a PCIe 3.0 x 4 = 4 Gigabytes/s which is about 4 times the capacity of 4K resolution @ 60 frames/s.
Some of the results as you said were under the desktop counterpart and some were better or spot on with the desktop variant. Do you think there was any CPU bottlenecking going on with the Alpha unit? CPU bottlenecking is still a real thing in some games. What CPU was in the desktop and its clock? Just trying to paint a full picture. Thanks for the review and benchmarks!
Any videos on the Asus ROG XG Station 2 coming? It's weird that no one has done that yet. I hogged the last one yesterday from webhallen, maybe I'll do a video ;)
Well, if you live in Stockholm you can borrow it for a couple of days if you want, be the first one to do a video on it. Might draw a couple of subs since no one has done that yet on youtube. There's only coverage of the prototypes.
Like Erik says, great review. Will be getting this, probably in a month or so, for my Alienware laptops. Just ordered a 1080Ti so I'll be popping the 'old' 1080 in to this.
SO when you buy it does it come with a GPU or do you have to purchase one? I'm thinking about getting a R@ with the Amplifier but I need to know if I will have to get a GPU for the Amp.
I have the alienware R3 (6820HK). I use the AGA with a 1080 GTX at the moment. if I get the 1080ti should I expect an increase in performance over the the 1080? I know we won't know for sure until the card is released...but do we know if the AGA will choke the performance so much that it will make no noticable difference?
Hi there I was wondering if it is possible to use more than just graphics cards in here, as in other expansion card. I was wondering if you could verify that for me
Awesome review Tobias! I have a quick question though, I own an AW 13 R2 and was wondering if it was worth it to get the amplifier instead of upgrading to the R3? Any insight from all you guys here? thanks
so using this do you have to buy the graphics card separate , what graphics cards work with this and does this work with non alienware laptops like hp laptops?
I have an alienware x51 with the maxed out gtx 960 card. If I was to get the alienware amplifier and get an gtx 970 graphics card with it, would it be like running dual graphics cards? Or would I just be running the alienware amplifier gtx 970 only? which would be a total waste of a 600 bucks.
my alpha doesn't have the port I have the base i3 but I want to take my PC to the next level but this is really dissapointing is there a way to get around that without buying a new pc
i ordered one with a graphic card gtx 1060 3gb, but tbh it felt it was worse then my inbuilt 870 3gb M, since it had issues running wow with big raid numbers, where my current is able to handle 20man raid with 30-50 fps depending on fights and etc. so i dont know, mine might had been bugged, since the alienware box i had, was weird when trying to open it, as it felt like i was about to break it, as it was tight on one of the side so had to force open it, and whenever i were to take it off, i couldnt press Fn + F1 or click on the button behind to make it react.
Hey Tobias, I have an alienware laptop but instead of getting the alienware graphics amplifier Im looking at at a different brand amp to connect it via with thunderbolt 3. I've heard the alienware amplifier port is not a fast a a thunderbolt 3 port so performance is better using thunderbolt, that way I could get the most out of the other video card. Is this correct? if so, which would you recommend? or does the alienware amp works best ? thanks much!
I have a Radeon R9 M290X in my Alienware 17 laptop. I want to know if a EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti is a good upgrade?. Is it really easy to install?. I'm average at tech, I know some decent knowledge. The Alienware Graphics Amplifier looks promising.
Can the Alienware graphics amplifier be used with one of the newer NVIDA higher end Quadro RTX 4000 or Quadro RTX 5000 cards? Has anyone had any success using these, which can take advantage of the large number of CUDA cores, as well as accelerated ray-tracing capability.? I'm holding off getting one for my Alienware R15 machine, until this capability can be demonstrated.
Nvm i have an older model of the alpha so i dont have the slot in the back to connect the alpha with the graphics anplifier, if you know anthing else that works keep me posted, thanks
can you buy a better graphics card for this instead of the one they have inside it? also 4k and VR can you touch bases on those. how much better with the graphics card than without it....can you post video. let's set you are using alienware i7 r3.... can you do that for us thanks
The new 15 R3 is out, but I might just get the R2 and this. Where I live it's cheaper then the R3 and better performance, if you can find a good deal for the R2 on eBay.
I believe that some r2s come with a smaller PSU than the r3s, which can limit your GPU upgrades substantially. My r3 with the 330w PSU can comfortably run a i7 6700k clocked to 4ghz and barely fit a EVGA 1060 6gb SC ACX single fan without having any power issues. To be frank, unless you're finding x51s at very good deals, you'd be better off buying a PC without such a restrictive case. Upgraded GPUs will generally struggle to cool themselves without any substantial modification to the case, and the PSU is permanently stunted to 330w.
hi.. anyone can suggest what graphics card brand should i use for gtx1070 / 1080? its been quite a while ive seen that some wouldnt work and others wouldnt fit entirely on the amp. hi mr tobias
Tobias Dahlberg the only problem left i suppose is which one would fit well. its been a while i keep on checking some cards are too big to fit on amp. i mean you cannot lock / close the amp
So I have a msi pe60 does the dock work with the pc? Because I think you only need a thunderbolt plug and it can be used but some guys here tell that it only works with Alienware so what's the truth does anyone have experiences?
Not veryknowledgeable about all this stuff but this does not seem worth it? that barely made any dents for performance.. 10-15% better graphics for a couple hundred?? nahh
You misunderstood what the purpose of it is. The graphs are showing the performance of that external "980" graphics card in a large desktop PC, and comparing it to using the same graphics card connected to a laptop or similar underpowered PC using this "amplifier" device. This greatly enhances the power of this smaller PC in most cases, unless it is already fairly powerful. Hopefully this makes sense haha.
***** Yeah dude it was a great video! I'm just trying to explain it to Emanuel cause he thought the comparison was between the laptop without the G amp and the laptop with the G amp
i picked one of these up to use an RX 480, and i could not get it to work at all. it was the biggest pain, i tried everything.
sold the rx 480, popped in a gtx 1070 and it worked fine.
Wow, that is weird. 1070 is a good upgrade though ;)
Tobias Dahlberg can any laptop be used for this device?
awesome guy No, only the Alienware ones that support it.
Tobias Dahlberg is there one for intel?
awesome guy Intel laptops? What are you talking about.
rtx cards support alienware amplifier ? im waiting for videos on youtube to confirm this. such that i can buy the rtx card and amplifier. else i need to wait for dell to make new one for rtx cards. plz confirm me. thanks.
Great review. Definitely gonna pick one up for my Alienware r3 laptop.
+Erik Saucedo Thanks! Awesome which graphics card will you be installing
I was thinking the same thing. Once the 10 series GPUs are a few years old I will be grabbing an amplifier and whatever current gen card is out for 2019. This amp increases the life cycle of your laptop by several years. Well worth the investment.
TechMeNow definitely a 1080. I wanna wait for the 1080ti but I'm too impatient!
Erik Saucedo Haha alright sounds phenomenal!
Yeah I get that haha!
For those that concerns about if this can handle future performance and video card upgrade.
Here's a simple math. A 4K resolution is between 10 to 15 mb in size. So each frame is 10 to 15 mb. Now, when you're video gaming at 4K resolution running at about 60 frames per second. Because a PCIe 3.0 x 4 = 4 Gigabytes/s which is about 4 times the capacity of 4K resolution @ 60 frames/s.
thats not exactly how it works... thats only for rendering, not for textures and such.
will it work with my hp pavilion? with no dedicated graphics and a i5
Finally a short & quick review. Good stuff dawg
I know it's weird to comment so late with this question, but what the song you used? lol I been clicking on this for over a year listening to it 😂😂
Did you test the graphics card and amp from the same PC?
I've got an Allienware R17 with an RTX 2060...would this bring me anything, and will it support the new super cards?
Some of the results as you said were under the desktop counterpart and some were better or spot on with the desktop variant. Do you think there was any CPU bottlenecking going on with the Alpha unit? CPU bottlenecking is still a real thing in some games. What CPU was in the desktop and its clock? Just trying to paint a full picture. Thanks for the review and benchmarks!
Good points, The CPU I used was an i7 4770k with 16gb of RAM. Thanks for watching!
***** thanks Tobias!
So why didn't you use a 1070-1080?
Hi! Because Alienware sent me a unit with a 980 inside. Thanks for watching!
Tobias Dahlberg pls make 1070 1080 review!! hehe ty more power to you :)
does the graphics card that you buy for the amplifier have to be better than the one in your laptop to have any positive effect?
+Vidnog Yes
Thank you
would this help for a regular laptop?
It only works on select Alienware PC's.
Sami Loyal how about for dell laptops since you know dell owns Alienware
You can put a resistance adapter on the fan to make it lower rpm.
+Altered Serenity yep
Any videos on the Asus ROG XG Station 2 coming? It's weird that no one has done that yet. I hogged the last one yesterday from webhallen, maybe I'll do a video ;)
+Altered Serenity Not yet
Well, if you live in Stockholm you can borrow it for a couple of days if you want, be the first one to do a video on it. Might draw a couple of subs since no one has done that yet on youtube. There's only coverage of the prototypes.
Hi dude,
Whats the cpu in the alpha..i5 or i7 ?
Do you need a alienware laptop in order to use? I am planning on buying it yet I don't own a alienware laptop
+AirusPlays Yes you need an Alienware
Like Erik says, great review. Will be getting this, probably in a month or so, for my Alienware laptops. Just ordered a 1080Ti so I'll be popping the 'old' 1080 in to this.
+theimp67 Thank you. Sounds awesome
You probably mentioned this in the video.
Does the Alienware Graphics Amplifier connected to an Alienware x51 r3 run both cards?
No
Can you link the new Graphics card
I wonder if a RTX 2080ti will work on the Graphics amp
Are all the cables you need included with the amplifier?
Yep!
What's your CPU in the laptop? There is no way there is no CPU bottleneck
Can you buy a cheap graphics card and get more power that way?
SO when you buy it does it come with a GPU or do you have to purchase one? I'm thinking about getting a R@ with the Amplifier but I need to know if I will have to get a GPU for the Amp.
It does not come with a GPU so you'll have to purchase one.
thanks! That is good to know.
Thanks for watching!
I have the alienware R3 (6820HK). I use the AGA with a 1080 GTX at the moment.

Edwin Deverill yes but it wont be much
Hi there I was wondering if it is possible to use more than just graphics cards in here, as in other expansion card. I was wondering if you could verify that for me
Use a compressor on your audio and raise the volume
+PaulBeats Thanks for the feedback
***** no problem man!:) if you have any questions about audio just ask me anytime!
PaulBeats Btw check my latest video. I used a compressor.
***** sure i will sometimes tomorrow
Can u use this w/ an Acer Laptop? Or does it have to specifically be an Alienware?
Only Alienware
Awesome review Tobias! I have a quick question though, I own an AW 13 R2 and was wondering if it was worth it to get the amplifier instead of upgrading to the R3? Any insight from all you guys here? thanks
+Denny Adiputra If the CPU and RAM is enough for you. Just get the G-AMP
wow that was a fast response, thanks man will definitely consider getting it then!
+Denny Adiputra No problem man. Thanks for watching
+Denny Adiputra No problem man. Thanks for watching
+Denny Adiputra No problem man. Thanks for watching
Does this make the cpu heat more?
so using this do you have to buy the graphics card separate , what graphics cards work with this and does this work with non alienware laptops like hp laptops?
Yes, it will not work with other laptops. All cards that are not too long works. Check Dell.com
Will it work on over PC also or just Dell & Alien-ware?
Just Dell/Alienware
Tobias Dahlberg Thanks Great vid..
I Love Alien-Ware computers...
Having trouble opening mine (for first use)... Feels like I'm going to break it. Advice?
I felt the same, you just gotta try harder.
+Hyperistic total waste
wait i don't understand do you get a grafikcard or do u have to buy it have an alienwere 17 something should i buy it??
you still have to buy a graphics card too
does this work for non-alienware products such as acer products?
+Outlaw Jaw nope
Do I need to buy a separate graphics card for the graphics amplifier? Can somebody summarize what I have to do to get this working please
+Crisp Zachary Buy the graphics Amplifier and a GPU. You also have to have a compatible Alienware computer in the first place
Does the laptop see both graphics cards the one internal and the external GA just like if you plugged into graphics cards in a desktop PC
+James Linehan yes
Can I enable the graphics amplifier through a USB?
+Staremind04 No
my alpha doesn't have the port I have the base i3 but I want to take my PC to the next level but this is really dissapointing is there a way to get around that without buying a new pc
i ordered one with a graphic card gtx 1060 3gb, but tbh it felt it was worse then my inbuilt 870 3gb M, since it had issues running wow with big raid numbers, where my current is able to handle 20man raid with 30-50 fps depending on fights and etc. so i dont know, mine might had been bugged, since the alienware box i had, was weird when trying to open it, as it felt like i was about to break it, as it was tight on one of the side so had to force open it, and whenever i were to take it off, i couldnt press Fn + F1 or click on the button behind to make it react.
+Theblackahsa Get in touch with Dell/Alienware about your issue!
what is this smaller piece next to the amplifier?
That is the Alienware system. Its a desktop that was for sale around the same time that this system came out.
Is it necessary for alienware 17 r3 ?
Will this work on an Alienware M14XR1 model? It has a GeForce GT 555M. I am not sure how old of models this will work on.
+nick lemaster I don't think so
Tobias Dahlberg Alright. Thank you!
But isnt a 460 watt powersuply to weak for a 1070 or 1080 dont they need like atleast a 600 watt
+Bobo24 It's enough for any GPU. 1080's say recommended 600 but that's for an entire system. This PSU is only powering the GPU and nothing else
So lemme get this straight the amp is like having 2 graphics cards together?
No, it’s like replacing it with a better one
so when the amp is connected it only uses the graphics card inside the amp and doesnt use the graphics card in the alienware?
Hey Tobias, I have an alienware laptop but instead of getting the alienware graphics amplifier Im looking at at a different brand amp to connect it via with thunderbolt 3. I've heard the alienware amplifier port is not a fast a a thunderbolt 3 port so performance is better using thunderbolt, that way I could get the most out of the other video card. Is this correct? if so, which would you recommend? or does the alienware amp works best ? thanks much!
+Rafael Ospina Do you have a thunderbolt 3 port on your machine?
Rafael Ospina ive read that alienware amp is the best actually
Tobias Dahlberg yep I have one !
Alienware amp actually crushes Thunderbolt 3, performance wise
am i right to assume that this only works on alien ware PCs?
+Woopty Do You certainly are
Ok, so is it worth it? I have an Alienware alpha and It can't run Black Desert Online the best, will this make it run full settings with high fps?
Depends on the graphics card.
If you have a good graphics card with it. The thing doesn't come with a graphics card itself I don't think.
What!? My Alienware alpha doesn't have that connection!!!!
Can u put into a desktop ????
Does it come with the graphics card?
+DarkGenesis no
I have a Radeon R9 M290X in my Alienware 17 laptop. I want to know if a
EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti is a good upgrade?. Is it really easy to install?. I'm average at tech, I know some decent knowledge. The Alienware Graphics Amplifier looks promising.
Unknown Entity gtx 750ti is a downgrade from a M290x ...
Doum125 yea wtf is he talking about ....
As everyone else said, 290x is better than the 750ti.
I'm holding off getting one for my Alienware R15 machine, until this capability can be demonstrated.
how weight that alienware graphic amplifier?
+Schweetz Sister I don't know. Look it up on their website
thanks dude

subbed! great video and cannot wait to see more like it!
+EnderFart FartFreekz Thanks a lot!
yah, no problem! I hope to see you grow!

so if i purchase the graphics amplifier, does the cables that connect this to the alienware alpha come with it?

is the geforce included in the item box?
+orix2002 No it's not

+Cedric James There isn't a gpu in it from the beginning. Just buy the one you want to use.
What so in essence you buy the housing with nothing in it?
+Cedric James Yes. Then you choose the graphics card yourself
Cedric James n
does the g-amp come with a 980?
+Zachary Maestas no, it doesnt. Just my review unit did.
my alpha does not have the slot for it wtf
so online alienware pc support i was hoping to boost my dell e6420
Yeah
What size fan is in the g amp
That amplifier is almost the size of a mini itx pc.
lol
would it work with xps 13?

Well, the only good thing that Alienware have is their External GPU brand
sooooooooo this is going to help my laptop to no get so hot?, cause im burning!
will this work on a razer blade stealth
+Jude Immanivong No
btw the 1060 6gb and the 980 are essentially the same card you're improving nothing by replacing it.
hi.. anyone can suggest what graphics card brand should i use for gtx1070 / 1080? its been quite a while ive seen that some wouldnt work and others wouldnt fit entirely on the amp. hi mr tobias

Do i jave to have a Alienware pc for this to work?
Yes
Dors it come with gpu?

This work with non alienware laptops?
+Alvaro Rodriguez hi, no it doesn't. It uses a proprietary connector.
Does it work only Alienware laptop?
Yes
great video. keep up the good work comrade
+Garret Rowe Thanks! I appreciate it!
can you run a 1080 with it?
Kyōka Suigetsu yes
Could this work with dells new XPS15?

Tobias Dahlberg is that due to the "custom" chord that is used to connect with the gm?
+Ray McCarthy Yep, can't be used via the thunderboly USB C port on the XPS
Hello. I watched your video. Thank you for taking the time to upload and put together the video.

nope. does it have a thunderbolt cable? there are other that work with thunderbolt

It only works with Alienware
The Razer Core is a similar product that I hear works with any computer with a thunderbolt.
I'm pretty sure razer core also only works with the razer blades.
Nvm I'm wrong, the razer core does work on other laptops.
I only have the R1. I doubt I can use this :(
Check if your pc/laptop has a special port in the back for the graphics amplifier.
Nazze14 it doesn’t have wat do I do know????
yes you can, just use external gpu plug and linked them both
whatappend when your laptop got a gtx 1060 and you buy a amplifier with a gtx 1060
+jacco amerongen Not worth it
Is there an asus alternative
Yes, the ROG XG Station
Can i use IT on xps 15 2016?
Nope

Not veryknowledgeable about all this stuff but this does not seem worth it? that barely made any dents for performance.. 10-15% better graphics for a couple hundred?? nahh
You misunderstood what the purpose of it is. The graphs are showing the performance of that external "980" graphics card in a large desktop PC, and comparing it to using the same graphics card connected to a laptop or similar underpowered PC using this "amplifier" device. This greatly enhances the power of this smaller PC in most cases, unless it is already fairly powerful. Hopefully this makes sense haha.
+Eric Evans I just compared the scores of using the same GPU in the G amp or a full desktop PC

Eric Evans Yeah, thanks for watching.

mine is EVGA 1080 SC
hmm thanks
