just watched this video on pretty much the exact same computer (M17x R3) bought it in 2011. i thought it was a good idea to buy a very good laptop so i'll be golden for a good 5 or 6 years, and here i am, 9 years later still gaming on it.😀 hallowed be alienware.
I still got my Alienware M17 R4 bought in 2012, I don't play games anymore so I used it as my main audio station as it has Soundblaster in it to power my Edifier R2000db speakers. I upgraded the ram to 16 GB from the original 8GB, changed my SSD from 128 to 250 GB, and upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Still beautiful after almost 10 years as it is slightly used as seldom used for gaming as I have my deskstop built for gaming. I just bought it for bragging rights with my nameplate on it. I bought it for A$3,500 in 2012.
My 6 year old "Acel Shitspire" 5742 is still doing OK 6 years after purchase, despite being roasted for a good 5 years with overheating on the CPU. I'll have to take the mobo out and have a look.
Looking back, I just remembered how incredible the old design was in terms of aesthetics and how it raised the standard of what a gaming laptop should be
their 17 2014 model actually the best slap it with 4940mx and gtx 1070, pretty much will destroy any current laptop easily in cooling/performance. i owned the 15 2015 but still looking 17 2014 at decent price
My Nitro 5 is about 8 lbs. Try carrying that in your backpack along with at least 4 lbs of extra material 5 out of 7 days a week, every weeks a year maybe minus 3 weeks. And you speed walk around on a large campus often with that same backpack. My shoulders hurt often.
I love the aesthetic of alienware laptops of that "vintage" because I personally love that highly gamer design, the rgb and everything in between, and I don't really care about the weight of a laptop, as long as its got the performance to back it up.
boiohboi i think you didn’t get what he was asking. He was asking what is the point or what benefit do you get from having a hdmi -in (note: this is different from hdmi-out, which is what you use to connect to another display eg. tv or another monitor).
Mine's still running as intended, 8 years after it was made. I've seen dead gaming laptops half it's age, and I can replace any major part for 200 bucks or less, myself. Honestly, it's a pretty amazing machine, and these days you can upgrade them to a 1070 (with modded drivers) and extreme edition i7 (don't remember the model) that gets up to 4 Ghz. You can also use the cooling from the 17 r1, meaning you can pretty much double your heatpipes, and go all copper. Even in 2020, it can be pretty capable for what it's worth. Plus super cheap upgrades, and a metric ton of I/O inside AND out
The new all-AMD laptop (forgot which make) has a desktop AM4 socket that can potentially enable you to change the Ryzen chip inside with a Ryzen 2 and so on.... So no, not really.
Thanks, i was looking for a laptop but i dident want to spend $500 for the potato laptops that were in the new market. It took me a few months to find it but its great!
+Psivewri I personally bought an Alienware M17x R4 off ebay a couple months back, It is the same thing but with an nVidia GeForce GTX 660m. It was $450 and came with an Alienware mouse, Backpack and mouse pad. I ended up selling all the extras for a nice cool $50. So $400 for this isn't bad. Some things to keep in mind is you must give the laptop some decent airflow or your GPU will overheat fast and get to about 96c, It will back off and for the next few minutes you will be running off 4 - 10fps while the GPU cools off. The 660m GPU does fine for me at the moment but like video says you can upgrade it, I personally will be upgrading to a 780m which will be about 200% faster. And you will most likely need a new battery cause after 5 years don't expect the OEM battery to hold its original charge. If you don't want to do that just keep it plugged in. My pros and cons about the laptop. Pros : • Good feeling keyboard with nice colors, Doesn't just feel like a cheap laptop keyboard. • Media buttons on the top right are awesome and I tend to use them a lot. • Has a full sized keyboard • Looks sleek, When the laptop screen is up it doesn't look fat. The style of the laptop fits the size perfectly. • RGB So you can have all the rainbow goodness you can desire. • You can upgrade the GPU and other things. • 2 ports for 2.5" SSD or HardDrives and I believe an m.2 • Neat power button, It flickers as the Hard Drive spins. • Very nice loud speakers. • Selection of ports and even a method to lock your laptop if you wanted to feel more safe at a coffee shop or something.. Cons : • If you have big hands like me then your palm will tend to hit the corner of the trackpad so you might hit/shoot something you don't want to while gaming. This can be countered via Alien Touch in the AlienFX area where you can adjust the sensitivity and something for "accidental palm hits" • Trackpad isn't the greatest • Heavy • My power cord slips out easily (Might just be mine) • The fans are noisy Overall I highly recommend doing this. It worked out so well for me cause I am at the moment traveling in an RV traveling. Also thanks Psivewri cause I will new be opening it up and getting all the dust out & reapplying paste. :) Thumbs up from me and I hope this helped anyone.
Well, Recently I upgraded to an Alienware 15 R3 & sold my old one for $675. On Fortnite 1080 w/ medium Anti Aliasing & everything else low I was getting 50 -60fps, Now with the update I would think it would get 70 - 80 on those settings. Keeping in mind I have a 1600 x 900 screen and not 1920x1080p but I don't think that would change much. If you can find one with a better AMD card it wont cost much more & will run much faster. If you're curious about the new one I paid $970 & it has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060-6GB, i7-6700HQ, 120Hz screen and 8GB DDR4. Mint condition and was a steal :o
When talking about the fan sound, you need to state whether or not the computer is idling(just web browsing or simple document editing), or is at full load i.e gamming
ryan felps not really, but yes desktops is more upgradable considering there size, but there's laptops with ryzen 1700 & i7 7700k with 1080s in sli, big but still portable with a 4k screen, my dell 7710 has a xeon,1070 and 4k around 1000$
This chip runs hot, my dad has it in his laptop and it was reaching around 90c under load and even after replacing the paste it still maxes out at 70-80c
He also miscalculated the change in degrees Fahrenheit too. He said it was a change of 27 C and 80 F, when it should be only a 48 F change in temperature.
José Garcia i found a by seller called (defective) laptop for 250$. As the seller didn't include the power adapter i bought myself a power adapter. And once it arrived it worked perfectly fine and nothing was defective. The issue was that the seller didn't use a matching power adapter or a not operating one. I bought the adapter for just 30$ on ebay and it powered the laptop on without issues. The specs of the laptop are: i7 4710HQ, 16GB ddr3, GTX 980M 4GB, 4K Touchscreen display, 256gb ssd, 1tb hdd, model is alienware 15 r1.
M18x R2 is still ouperform Alienware 18(which is the successor for it) though especially when you upgrade this thing too GTX 1060. Same with M17x R4 is still out perform its successor, Alienware 17 R3 lol. This was when Alienware built their laptop property to make it upgradable and not soldering them on. Nowadays, Alienware went to BGA and that's why it's crap for gaming laptop.
Great video! I just bought an Alienware M17X R4. It has gtx 675m, i7 3740qm, 12Gb ddr3 1600MHz, 32Gb m-sata, 500Gb HDD for only 172.63 USD and that is including the shipping cost.
Dude I got damn near the same laptop since 2012. My brother passed it down to me and boy has it been through some hell. Multiple OS changes from Vista, Linux, and Win 8. Though just recently Ol' Betsy is starting to go out on me. The battery life is practically non-existent. Gets hot as all hell. Starts becoming unresponsive after repeated startups with no hard shutdown. Then the worst part, the AC Adaptor is really starting to make some popping noises. Like it would set my house on fire if I went to sleep with it plugged in. That and some keys stopped working as well. Keys "6789 and O" don't work. The old girl still got some life to her, and after watching this video may just me some ways to get her back on her feet. The clogged CPU vents for one are definitely an issue. The fact you can replace the graphics card is a neat feature. Could probably replace it with one of my brother's old graphics cards. Pretty much just gotta replace the battery, Power Adaptor, and clean up the CPU and she should be good to go again. I remember playing Mass Effect 3 on her, but now she can mainly run Flash games. I know it would be better just to replace her with a newer, slimmer laptop, but shes what I use during downtime in my room. The PC rig my brother built me, a Thermaltake core x9 I call Big Bess, has to stay in the living room. Can't really drag the big girl to my room when I'm done for the night. Anyway, sorry for typing a lot, just had to share my story since most these issues popped up last night. I don't know how I came across this video but I'm glad I did cause it could get Ol' Betsy back in shape.
Robbaz Corgi Jesus man, I've been fairly gentle with mine with it first came out. All keys work as far as I know. No popping noise from my power supply. Then again I probably wouldn't hear it considering how loud the damn thing is under load. I always keep it plugged in though.
Got the same laptop for $200 USD, slapped an additional 250GB SSD and a 4GB GTX 860M GPU, and am so proud of this rig it isn't even funny. It can handle pretty much anything I can throw at it. Even with the Stock 660M GPU, it is incredibly capable for a now 7 year old laptop, it will handle pretty much any modern game at medium to low settings, and any game id say 2015 and back at higher settings. GET ONE! Their really nice for upgrading due to the stupid amount of ports on the rig, the additional memory bay inside the computer, and overall very modualized design of the circuitry inside the rig (Hense the beefy scaleform and INSANE near 10 lbs weight, which is about double the average laptop weight.) This is definitely a rig that pushes the limits of what a Laptop is capable of if given some care and a few upgrades here and there.
Eurcom recently announced that they will be building smaller 10 series GPUS that will fit most of the casings in gaming laptops. As for the 17 R3, they were able to fit the gtx 1070. In all honesty, I would recommend buying a old 18 alienware rather than the 17, because of the spacing on the motherboard. This will allow for future gpu components to possibly fit within the laptop. As for the correct bios regarding the laptop, I recommend checking out notebookforums to find working bios for the upgraded gpu.
I got a Alienware R2 with OLED screen and GTX965 for $600, I waited months for a deal like this to come up on ebay, but totally worth it. That R4 would make a good psudo Desktop replacement, especially with a Graphics amp.
After watching this video, I decided it was time to upgrade my laptop to one of these older Alienware machines (as they are more powerful than my Dell Inspiron) so I can play some games on the go. After a bit of searching, I found a 2014 Alienware 17X with an i7-4710MQ @ 2.5GHz and a GTX 860M with 8GB RAM for only $550! In flawless condition! It was an amazing find and is all thanks to you! I have had it for a few weeks now and it is working great with no faults!
Though I didn't purchase a second hand Alienware, I did purchase a 1 year old ASUS Republic Of Gamers laptop (ASUS ROG G752VT). Paid $780 US for it. 24GB of RAM, 256GB SSD with 1TB HDD, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M GPU , and Skylake Core i7-6700HQ. I think that was a bargain!
Theo T. Wish I would've found that deal. Bought the old Dell Inspiron 7559 laptop, GTX 960m 4GBs, i5-6300HQ 8 GBs ram, 256 GB SSD for about $750. Mine isn't bad, but compared to that, the money could've clearly been spent elsewhere for a lot better.
Ryan King - Keep an eye on pawn shops! That's where I got my ASUS. I was very surprised to find this even sitting on the shelf with other 3+ year old beater basic laptops. When the cashier gave me the charger for it, the charger still was wrapped in its factory plastic flim!
1003Alfred libraries are used for reading books, not playing games. It's also 4 kgs so it probably wouldn't really be a good choice to bring it to school everyday unless you're very near to it.
Seriously considering buying this laptop if not the M17x R3 because of this video. Would be awesome to have some gaming portability. Also you can put cards like the GTX 880M 8GB in this laptop as well as the R3. Probably the path I'm going to take with my gaming PC upgrade. Awesome video!
Kevin Akerberg Try to find a Dell 15 7559 instead. I see one on eBay right now (in the us) for only $540. Has a 960m, which is pretty close to the alienwares
I've found some pretty good deals on GTX 780M laptops, which are faster than both the 7970m and 960m, and the 960m is actually beaten by the 7970m by about 20% difference. Also I find the alienware's upgradability very valuable, and an OEM Dell machine seems like it wouldn't be as modular as something like an Alienware or a Sager, two brands I've been looking into
Kevin Akerberg I believe the Dell is actually more modular. It only takes 1 screw to get to the internals, and you can get to the ram, ssd, and battery from there. I just thought that the Dell was a much better value compared to the alienware. Alienware is around $750 used. Which is about $200 more for 20% better performance. Not sure how expensive the 780m laptops are though
Jonah Nguyen I’ve found an Alienware 17 with an i7-4700MQ, 16GB of RAM, 128GB SSD + 750GB HDD, and a GTX 780M for $600. Not too bad especially for an Alienware
Yup bartered for an Alienware 17 r2. Had to clean it out and replace the thermal paste, battery, and charger. Runs like a dream now. Added an m.2 ssd and I'm waiting on my 16gb of ram. After everything I'll have paid around 600$ with value. Runs everything on high and above.
i remember getting a handmedown laptop from my mom. i used coretemp and the cpu was getting like 90c. i opened it to find the air vent caked with dust :/ i also used tin foil in place of the old cracking thermal "paste". easily knocked 30c off the cpu.
nope. no thermal paste. tin foil works way better thAn you might think. it only gets about 50 degrees celsius under full load. and by full load i mean roblox.
Great video, but I think any laptop over 3 yrs old + just isn't worth investing into unless you absolutely love the machine but realistically they just aren't made to last anymore. Spending $600 and knowing it could fail or cost more in the long run without any warranty just seems a waste.
Jason Morel You don’t know what your talkin about mate...those Alienware’s will wup anything out there if you know how to install correct cpu like 940intel and 980m nvidia in M15xr2 for example. If you have never done this then it explains your bias.
Tom Tapp but the cost of those upgrades are costs that aren't worth what you get a old cpu and 980m, which if you were smart might aswell put a couple of hundreds more and get a new machine with newer gen cpu and gtx 1060 upwards in terms of value for your dollar its way better and your covered if it fails for 1-2 years and your getting 2x upwards performance, better then wasting a couple hundred and not having any guarantee on life span. Pure economics mate at the end of the day, its using your money wisely. If you feel upgrading old tech is the way good for you and best of luck.
Jason Morel that’s the very reason it’s worth it. You go buy your “new” msi or rog that has the cpu and gpu soldered to the motherboard and you have to run W 10. Get that new msi and when you burn up that GPU ....go buy another one. That’s how those companies are playing you “mate”....you can’t change/REPLACE cpu or gpu. Gotta buy new motherboard or new PC. Alienware and Sager lets you upgrade cpu like a 940xm that you can overclock because it’s not locked, to 3.8 mhz. Upgrade GPU to 980m that will rock those newer gpus that are soldered to MB. Got it now? Coming from someone who likes potatoes
This laptop is amazing, I still got mine and upgraded the cpu to an i7 3940xm and the gpu to a gtx1070. It easily keeps up with more recent laptops. But the thing I love the most about this laptop is its amazing design and modularity, if one part like the keyboard or screen would break you could easily buy new parts on ebay. All and all its an amazing laptop that I will still be using for the next couple of years.
Just a couple of important tios with this laptop (cuz i used to have that exact model) : - While you can indeed replace the video card keep in mind that there are only 3 models that are officially supported by the OEM BIOS, any newer models are unlikely to work unless you get a modded BIOS for it. - Under no circumstances should you ever get the GTX 675m, i had THREE of those fry in the M17x R4, and it wasn't even overheating as i was getting max 68c temps with it.
Had one of this ... even older model,2820qm with gtx460m. Used for over 7 years intensively, changed its HDD, RAM, GPU (gtx680m) thus coolibg module; poured water onto it and into it, dried out and work fine. Played pubg on it, running ok. Besides, it has a3D screen which i used for a while on WOW MOP...impressive
Cant buy it, spent all my money on a pc that has a fan that screams at me extremely loudly and vibrates my desk from gaming on games that are not that demanding for a game.
As someone who's used one of these machines for about a year, I can say that It's actually a surprisingly viable machine for gaming, and I even edit videos on it. I have however had to replace one RAM module, and my SSD, as they were as old as the laptop, and failing. With that said, that wasn't hard for me to diagnose, and fix, and the potential upgraded power for the machine is surprisingly high, if you're willing to do some modifications for a later mxm gpu. In addition, temps are quite good, I can run my 675m overclocked to 700 mhz and still easily stay under 70 C with an adjusted fan curve. The 3630QM is still a decent but not exceptional cpu, but the best option for the laptop is the 3940XM, which is an impressive cpu, even today. EDIT: I am now running a Quadro p4000 in it, which falls between the 1060, and 1070. Having a laptop of that performance level, especially with how good it's cooling and keyboard are, nowadays is actually really good for the total cost.
I actually bought the m17 r4 I'm 2012 for $2000 brand new and it's still working today. I have a 1tb SSD and a 2td HDD. Unfortunately 8gb of RAM and still running the stock gtx 660m there are games I'm unable to play still such as pubg and re7 but for the most part, she's still working well on most games.
I have an old Alienware M15X from 2012 with an i7 920xm CPU and a 5850m GPU. It still plays games pretty well on medium to low settings. It has survived a hard bike wreck on concrete with only minor scratches and has been very reliable. It's easy to upgrade parts and make any necessary replacements. I still don't regret my purchase. It definitely isn't a lightweight laptop by any stretch of the imagination, though.
mxm3.0 is a NVidia exclusive laptop graphics slot, which ives the graphicscard a PCIE 3.0 16x signal, and it is very small cpmpared to normal PCIE slots, though it is still pretty big comparedto Thunderbolt 3.
i have an A/Ware M9750 and it still runs. i am upgrading the RAM to 4GB (not a lot by todays standards) i may up the CPU and GPU as well. a lot of laptops cant be upgraded, so the alienware you got is worth it. thanks! that vent was clogged! mine is not nearly that bad!
im still rocking this laptop..32gb ram and i upgraded the gpu to a gtx 765m.. got 2 2.5 inch ssd's in it..it keeps up just fine and has a couple years still left in it..its a damn tank and i love it
I still have my M14X and haven't had a hiccup since the day I got it 7 years ago. Very reliable and durable if you care for it. Like keeping vents clear. Bought it for refurbished from Dell online outlet store for almost half original price.
AlienWare was a great company for making a gaming laptop cause of their superior hardware and they have a magical on their requirement before Dell Bought them. But then, the magic and power on their technician are gone after Dell Bought them.
I did and dont regret it at all. around the 2015 holiday season i got a 2010 m15x with a i7 and it was perfect for what i wanted until i could build a high end pc. i highly recommend a fan tray to have it sit on to cool it. finally got a 1080 and ryzen 5 system last week. huge step up
Just bought a new laptop last year. Kinda regret it. Next time (perhaps in 3-4 years), I'm going to buy second hand laptop. While I'm quite familiar with computer stuff, I'm not that tech-savvy either. Opening a laptop, cleaning all the vent, and re-pasting the CPU is something I don't really want to do. So perhaps I'm going to buy it at a store that specialized in 2nd hand laptop. It may be a bit expensive, but those stores already take cares all things like cleaning, repasting, checking for any damaged parts, and re-installing fresh windows.
Caseko CSK build ur own computer cheaper and it is fully upgradable watch how to build a computer. Idk why u buy laptops laptops suck there only for portablity
I have a full tower desktop, quite powerful too... but the power consumption is big (obviously) and the electric bill rises... It's alright when I playing AAA PC games or doing heavy duty stuff... But most of the time I'm just browsing the internet, watching movies, and all other light stuff. So I want to buy another computer with very light power consumption but still capable doing some medium stuff (like photoshop or sketchup)... and while at that, this time I want something that somewhat portable. So another desktop albeit the green one is kinda redundant. I'm also considering mini PC or something like that.
Caseko CSK Buy from a Windows certified refurbusher, I think that's what you call them... And yea it's true my desktop/ gaming pc uses way to much power, so much that I can't stay in my room with my door closed for more that 3 hours because it gets really hot :'v
That is wow... My PC doesn't get too hot nor drawing too much power. It's working normally. I just want something that use less power. It's overkill to use gaming PC for just daily browsing or watching youtube... and it's also killing my wallet (electric bill).
Just came across this video.. I just picked up (in Feb. of 2023) an Alienware M17X R3 with an intel i7 2860qm and Nvidia GeForce gtx 560m with 16gb of ram for $80.. just upgraded to 32gb 1600mhz ddr3, and dual 1tb ssds, and also have a gtx 580m with heat sink on the way (for another $80). I love it’s look and it still runs quite decent. Only two issues with it so far for me.. had to use a different touchpad driver to get “normal” two finger scrolling in windows 10 since the R3 was windows 7 based, vs the R4 like in this video being W8 based, and the rubberized coating is kinda messed up on parts of the palm rest. Had I seen this vid first, I definitely would have made the same decision. These, while older are pretty cool still.
as pc guy since i was old enough to use dos... the first thing you should do with a used laptop is to replace the stock thermal paste along with heat pads with copper heat-sinks 20 degree drop in operating temps in game css
@@tibora13 nothing i guess, but i upgraded my ram to 6gb by taking out the ram from my older laptop since it got the same speed as my curent laptop does
I bought a used Alienware 17 R2 laptop last year with 16 gigs of ram, a 980M gpu and a i7 4720hq, I added a couple ssd cards and cleaned out the fans along with a fresh install of win10. The screen is absolutely amazing for art/colours, I use it with my cintiq and art programs like photoshop. It’s built like a tank and It even plays new games on high, for example I’m currently playing control on max setting. I don’t play online games and I’m happy gaming at 30fps so this laptop is awesome for me. So ya depending on the laptop buying a used Alienware for a good price is absolutely worth it.
i have one exactly like this, its a really easy laptop to repair on, when i got mine it was completely dead. after i had swapped the RAM, Harddisk drive (new ssd), Charger, top lid on the screen, speakers, battery and cleaned up the entire thing and installed new Thermal paste its a great computer, i used it for college and it did a great job.
Looking at pre 2018 Alienware laptops, one can really appreciate the build in and out. To this day the other flagship companies still are missing half of what AW offered years ago. Yeah they are heavy as shit, which is why they have that solid feel that very few laptops offer. Works for me as im not mobile with mine, if you are...defo AWs are not for you nor your back. RGB lighting can be a bit too much for some but you can turn it off. Keyboards feel great throughout the models and have perfectly uniformly diffused LED lighting.
I bought an Alienware 14 for $230 used with 8GB of RAM, 750GB, and Intel i7-4700MQ, and a GTX 750 mobile buying locally on Offer Up. I'd say go for it if specs are good.
You did change my mind (a bit) about used laptops, however since I already own a desktop, I value weight and battery life a lot more, meaning I would spend more for a laptop with similar performance but in a much more portable setup. I really find it quite sad there is no laptop with a Nvidia MX150 (GT 1030) and a large 90Wh battery. Largest one ive found is the HP Spectre X360 Intel 8th gen with 79Wh but that one is around 1600 USD
i got a alienware 17 laptop from 2013 now it has intel i7 4th gen and i upgraded the video card to 980m 8gb and 32gb memory runs amazing for 1080p ultra gaming
yep I have one of these still and it's very good still. The materials have not aged at all and it isn't that bad sound wise. I only had an issue with a fan earlier in its life but it has been a tank. I am using a desktop but this still beats my 960m laptop that I use during travel.
Draft Horse is my M18x R2. Same generation. One thing to look out for is dimming of the lights with age, worn connectors, and failing fans. Both models are very desktop like to the point it should be practical to upgrade the chipset.
i got my friend an Alienware M14X R1 core i7 2670QM (4c /8t) 8gb ram, and the top end GT 555M 3GB for 200 usd, it literally plays everything at 30fps lowest pubg witcher 3 etc etc BF1, it was super cheap portable etc, we got a replacement battery and an HDD caddy for the optical drive to ad an SSD, and boy its superb
Psivewri Can this old alienware laptop still can run the latest game today such as PUBG, Fortnite, or any large requirement game that we see now which these game need a high spec to run it? Will these old Alien Ware can do that anymore ????
These machines kick ass. I had the m18x r2 - Upgraded the GPU from 7970m CF to 780m SLI, 980m SLI. People are still upgrading with 1060s. All these new soldered disposable laptops suck.
I want to buy a secondhand Alienware laptop, but I just remembered I have a three-year-old Asus gaming laptop somewhere in my house, and I'm not using it.
This M17xr4 and the M15xr2 were two of the best ever made. The M15x can run 7970m ...gtx 670mx or even 980m. It’s a BEAST....can’t beat em. If you know some tech tricks.
one thicc box will win to some and "new pristine", budget-friendly to some others. It's gonna be win-win; of course, depends how you look at/define "winning". Period.
I picked up a Gigabyte P27 with 16 GB RAM Geoforce 840GTX 2GB, I7 4810MQ chip full HD 1080 17 inch screen, 128GB SSD for $500, as stated battery life is rubbish but it is a gaming Laptop so thats to be expected, BUT it boots Windows 10 in around 8 seconds :), weights in at brick like 4kg or just on 9 pounds. Bang for the buck you can't beat a old gaming laptop, blows away newer laptops using low voltage chips and without dedicated graphics cards. It known as the BEAST in our house, its just demented FAST
I kind agree with clorox here. Dell's entire product line except for high end stuff is made of really cheap plastic and even the new ones have hinge rot. You even get low-end components with a high price premium. I recently saw a 600$ Dell laptop with a Celeron N3050 and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Definitely an unbelievable ripoff.
Leo Juhala just compare all the laptop reviews for laptops under a $1000, & most reviews for the Dell laptops under $1000 have a lot of negative reviews compared to similar spec laptops from other well known brand companies like Dell,
Just read your comment and typing this on my New Generation M17 with 9980HK, RTX 2080. Thought about getting the Area 51 until this came out and I realized it has the exact same power and weighs much less. Oh and it also has a 144Hz screen nice laptop you got though...

My main issue would the thermals ageing the parts inside... But generally I've had very few, if any laptops die on me.
Yes
With the new thermal paste it should stay cool and last quite a while :)
Psivewri: Still a great laptop and a great video ofcourse though.
My 6 year old "Acel Shitspire" 5742 is still doing OK 6 years after purchase, despite being roasted for a good 5 years with overheating on the CPU. I'll have to take the mobo out and have a look.
you've literally commented on every video I've watched today xD
Looking back, I just remembered how incredible the old design was in terms of aesthetics and how it raised the standard of what a gaming laptop should be
The old Alienware really looks a lot better....
Eric - Z - China but specs are terrible. Their gpu's are worn out so quickly
their 17 2014 model actually the best slap it with 4940mx and gtx 1070, pretty much will destroy any current laptop easily in cooling/performance.

I'll never understand the weight issue with laptops. If ten pounds is a factor then maybe it's time to go to the gym.
Spills51 i love heavy laptops. It gives me a feeling that the hardware build in is monsterious
oh god i have an asus g75vw and that muffuka isn't nice to carry around places.
Yeah, but when you have to carry this around daily in a backpack or whatever, get ready for bad posture and back pain.
So you'd be okay carrying it in a bag everyday for 6 hours?
I love the aesthetic of alienware laptops of that "vintage" because I personally love that highly gamer design, the rgb and everything in between, and I don't really care about the weight of a laptop, as long as its got the performance to back it up.
1:12 all of the failed attempts to plugging in the hdmi lol
Yep! The previous owner definitely used that HDMI port a lot :)
Psivewri what's the benefit of the hdmi-in on this laptop I don't think I've seen that before
It means you can use the laptop screen as a display for say, your gaming console.
boiohboi i think you didn’t get what he was asking. He was asking what is the point or what benefit do you get from having a hdmi -in (note: this is different from hdmi-out, which is what you use to connect to another display eg. tv or another monitor).
jt3000o the port label says HDMI out
Mine's still running as intended, 8 years after it was made. Plus super cheap upgrades, and a metric ton of I/O inside AND out
That was the best alianwere laptop ever made, great video bro! I would like to see it on video editing
I have a 5 year old MSI GX60 1AC with the same GPU but with an AMD processor instead, and I can run BF1 on Ultra in Singleplayer 😯

Thanks, i was looking for a laptop but i dident want to spend $500 for the potato laptops that were in the new market. It took me a few months to find it but its great!
still cannot beat my buy lol
what did you get?
1080p, ultra except grass. some things are turned on in advanced, with 2x msaa 40-60 fps
Pros :
• Good feeling keyboard with nice colors, Doesn't just feel like a cheap laptop keyboard.
• Media buttons on the top right are awesome and I tend to use them a lot.
• Has a full sized keyboard
• Looks sleek, When the laptop screen is up it doesn't look fat. The style of the laptop fits the size perfectly.
• RGB So you can have all the rainbow goodness you can desire.
• You can upgrade the GPU and other things.
• 2 ports for 2.5" SSD or HardDrives and I believe an m.2
• Neat power button, It flickers as the Hard Drive spins.
• Very nice loud speakers.
• Selection of ports and even a method to lock your laptop if you wanted to feel more safe at a coffee shop or something..
Cons :
• If you have big hands like me then your palm will tend to hit the corner of the trackpad so you might hit/shoot something you don't want to while gaming. This can be countered via Alien Touch in the AlienFX area where you can adjust the sensitivity and something for "accidental palm hits"
• Trackpad isn't the greatest
• Heavy
• My power cord slips out easily (Might just be mine)
• The fans are noisy
Overall I highly recommend doing this. It worked out so well for me cause I am at the moment traveling in an RV traveling.
Also thanks Psivewri cause I will new be opening it up and getting all the dust out & reapplying paste. :)
Thumbs up from me and I hope this helped anyone.
Joshua Pile get a 7970m not a 780
Thanks so much LOL, You just saved me about $100. If I bought the AMD one and sold my other one it would only cost about $30 - 40.
2 months late, I know, but what modern games have you tested on it and how well do they run?
Wow, that temp difference before and after cleaning it was crazy haha
thats why you clean your computers desktops are much easy to clean then a laptop gaming laptops are a bad idea in the long run.
that and they're nowhere near as upgradeable as desktops! Always thought laptops should be thin and light anyway! :)
ryan felps not really, but yes desktops is more upgradable considering there size, but there's laptops with ryzen 1700 & i7 7700k with 1080s in sli, big but still portable with a 4k screen, my dell 7710 has a xeon,1070 and 4k around 1000$

Ryan Stenz Took the words right out of my mouth.

Jesus man, I've been fairly gentle with mine with it first came out. All keys work as far as I know. No popping noise from my power supply. Then again I probably wouldn't hear it considering how loud the damn thing is under load. I always keep it plugged in though.
Wow thats a heart warming story

Wow great deal! Did u have to do any mods for the GTX 860M? Also, do u know if it runs Windows 7?

Great video, but I think any laptop over 3 yrs old + just isn't worth investing into unless you absolutely love the machine but realistically they just aren't made to last anymore. Spending $600 and knowing it could fail or cost more in the long run without any warranty just seems a waste.
Jason Morel nonsense
Tom Tapp clearly coming from someone with no experience enjoy your potatoes :)

Just a couple of important tios with this laptop (cuz i used to have that exact model) :
- While you can indeed replace the video card keep in mind that there are only 3 models that are officially supported by the OEM BIOS, any newer models are unlikely to work unless you get a modded BIOS for it.

EDIT:
I am now running a Quadro p4000 in it, which falls between the 1060, and 1070.
Idk I think this is a true solid piece of gaming art
I have an old Alienware M15X from 2012 with an i7 920xm CPU and a 5850m GPU. It still plays games pretty well on medium to low settings. It has survived a hard bike wreck on concrete with only minor scratches and has been very reliable. It's easy to upgrade parts and make any necessary replacements. I still don't regret my purchase. It definitely isn't a lightweight laptop by any stretch of the imagination, though.
wait what? you can upgrade the gpu in this laptop? does it have an mxm slot (or however those are called)???
CMDR PLKarmann a graphics amplifier slot? Graphics card?
mxm3.0 is a NVidia exclusive laptop graphics slot, which ives the graphicscard a PCIE 3.0 16x signal, and it is very small cpmpared to normal PCIE slots, though it is still pretty big comparedto Thunderbolt 3.
i have an A/Ware M9750 and it still runs. i am upgrading the RAM to 4GB (not a lot by todays standards) i may up the CPU and GPU as well. a lot of laptops cant be upgraded, so the alienware you got is worth it. thanks! that vent was clogged! mine is not nearly that bad!
Woah! I had no idea there were laptops that you could replace the GPU on!

Selling my Alienware m17x atm. Good laptop still tbh
How much
I still have my M14X and haven't had a hiccup since the day I got it 7 years ago.
Very reliable and durable if you care for it. Like keeping vents clear.
Bought it for refurbished from Dell online outlet store for almost half original price.
Still have it, mate?

just got a Alienware M17X could you do a how to on the cleaning
Psivewri I’m thinking of getting this laptop but I’m just wondering how loud it is?
Speedysparrow55 just clean the fans and maybe apply some new thermal paste and then you shouldn't have much noise
Caseko CSK wtf do u bit mine with that pc
He said “if you where to put a graphics card in yourself the laptop would run faster” I’m dying
as pc guy since i was old enough to use dos... the first thing you should do with a used laptop is to replace the stock thermal paste along with heat pads with copper heat-sinks 20 degree drop in operating temps in game css
I'LL TAKE ANYTHING THAT PLAYS OVERWATCH ABOVE 60 FPS ON LOW SETTINGS THANK YOU VERY MUCH.. sorry I just have a really cheap laptop
Nagisa Shiota get a job and invest on some solid gaming laptop. If you cant get a job, well i dont know...
Hinatacute ᗩᒍ I'm a student 😂 The same one I use for school is the same as for my gaming 😭😂
maybe you can take a used laptop with gt 930/840 or higher, i got mine for 250$ with i3 and 930m and can run overwatch at 45(drop) - 70fps
@@mozuku1509 as long as the engine ran Overwatch......what else mattered?

Nice video! I managed to find an m17x r3 for $240 with a GTX 580m. Cleaned dust and replaced the thermal paste and it runs amazing

Psivewri where can you buy it in vancouver and how much would it COST?
i have one exactly like this, its a really easy laptop to repair on, when i got mine it was completely dead. after i had swapped the RAM, Harddisk drive (new ssd), Charger, top lid on the screen, speakers, battery and cleaned up the entire thing and installed new Thermal paste its a great computer, i used it for college and it did a great job.
Have been using my alienware 15 for 3 years and It's still capable of playing recent games. I have to say paid for this laptop was a good investment.

I agree! I own an Alienware 15 R2 and still works like a champ today.

$470 in "North America" REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
north america is called NA because it's full of salt
Well in the Northern United States that applies..
North America include to Mexico, and yes, it's the price
yep I have one of these still and it's very good still. The materials have not aged at all and it isn't that bad sound wise. I only had an issue with a fan earlier in its life but it has been a tank. I am using a desktop but this still beats my 960m laptop that I use during travel.

Psivewri. do you use that laptop today? If you dont give it to me!hehehehehejejejejejeehehehehehee
Draft Horse is my M18x R2. Same generation. One thing to look out for is dimming of the lights with age, worn connectors, and failing fans. Both models are very desktop like to the point it should be practical to upgrade the chipset.

Can this old alienware laptop still can run the latest game today such as PUBG, Fortnite, or any large requirement game that we see now which these game need a high spec to run it? Will these old Alien Ware can do that anymore ????
AA/AD J yes you can if you upgrade the GPU and CPU. It's upgradable though
These machines kick ass. I had the m18x r2 - Upgraded the GPU from 7970m CF to 780m SLI, 980m SLI. People are still upgrading with 1060s. All these new soldered disposable laptops suck.

This M17xr4 and the M15xr2 were two of the best ever made. The M15x can run 7970m ...gtx 670mx or even 980m.
It’s a BEAST....can’t beat em. If you know some tech tricks.
Alienware Area 51 MM7700 was the best. These laptop was made by their own before Dell bought them. Great work
*WHO WILL WIN*
A new pristine wise budget gaming pc
*VS*
*ONE T H I C C BOX*
one thicc box will win to some and "new pristine", budget-friendly to some others.
I Don't recommended buying stuff from Dell. I think other companies have much better value and have quality that is bassicly the same
vintage clorax bleach -_- How do you back up this statement? How can you prove that it is true?
I kind agree with clorox here. Dell's entire product line except for high end stuff is made of really cheap plastic and even the new ones have hinge rot. You even get low-end components with a high price premium. I recently saw a 600$ Dell laptop with a Celeron N3050 and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Definitely an unbelievable ripoff.
My xps is great I would definitely buy another one when it’s time
Leo Juhala just compare all the laptop reviews for laptops under a $1000, & most reviews for the Dell laptops under $1000 have a lot of negative reviews compared to similar spec laptops from other well known brand companies like Dell,
Honestly, Alienware cant be beat unless its Razer
Just bought one of these for 70$ Kinda hyped, keeping it more as a secondary and for nostalgia as im typing on a 2019 Area 51M atm
Just read your comment and typing this on my New Generation M17 with 9980HK, RTX 2080. Thought about getting the Area 51 until this came out and I realized it has the exact same power and weighs much less. Oh and it also has a 144Hz screen nice laptop you got though...
