You folks today have no idea how good you've really got it. And that was when the Minimum wage was $2.85 an hour, not when it was $7.25 an hour. And that's not accounting for inflation. In today's dollars, that 16 megs would've cost around $1,500. Enjoy your "fucking expensive" RAM! ;)

      Basically what the graphs show is that overclocking your memory can improve FPS to a significant level for gaming (on one graph it was a jump from 23 average FPS from 2133 speed to 3600 on an i7-7700k), but it can hurt performance in other areas such encoding whether it be unzipping a file, or computing a hash for an encryption algorithm. However, as Linus said, if you're not willing to suffer the pain of figuring out the right frequency to overclock at it's not worth it.

    Speed matters, but it is dependant on CAS latency.
    3200mhz DDR4 CAS-14 is pretty much the best thing commercially available right now.
    As speed increases, typically CAS latency increases as well, so much so that something like 4266mhz DDR4 CAS-19 is actually SLOWER than 3200 CAS-14 memory.
    You can do the math: [L/(0.5*S)]*1000=E
    L= Latency (CAS),
    S= Speed (in Mhz),
    E= Effective Rating (lower E value = better)
    So for 3200mhz CAS-14 ram the equation would be:
    [14/(0.5*3200)]*1000=8.750
    For 4266mhz CAS-19 it's:
    [19/(0.5*4266)*1000=8.907
    If you could get 4266mhz ram with a CAS latency of 18 THEN it would be slightly faster than 3200mhz CAS-14 RAM... unfortunately it doesn't exist (or is not actually available for purchase).

    Linus the ram performance differentiates based on more aspects like the cas latency, look up ram cas latency chart for more information thats why certain higher sped ram has lower performance then a lower sped ram based on Cas Latency.

      I remember when ram was purchased in MBs and it was THE most expensive upgrade. In fact it was mostly the only other than HD. Like being excited to go to a 100mb hd.... So yeah....I remember when it dropped way in price too. I maxed my build to 16 Mb. 33mghz if I remember. I'm old. :(

    I updated my previous pc's motherboard driver, which included speeding up the RAM speed from 32GB@1333MHz to 32GB@1600MHz. Yes, a long time ago on a motherboard far, far away...
    There was a marked improvement in the Star Swarm Stress Test, from only that driver update. I think RAM speed does make a difference in operation. Up to a point it improves, as shown in the video.

      Timing still important Robbie, it help on high task that bring fps drops. Specially now in 2017 with memorys that only have 20-20-20-28 when back in DDR2 times It was lot better with 5-5-5-15 (the lower the better). Main issue impo is the lack of quad-channel on this multicores CPUs. Maybe next gen of ryzen 2 can solve this issue, but in my country you better go for Intel and save ton of money on uncesary high speed memory that won't even help outperform new Intel 8700k when going ryzen, or even a 4700k with DDR3.

  • @tacobender5000
    @tacobender5000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    There is a lack of RAM Timing info in this video. I would imagine that would have more to do with the slight performance differences over anything else. If you study the patterns in the timings, the faster GHZ/MHZ RAM has slower timings... so if you run that DDRXXX RAM at different clock speeds, you can get away with different timing settings. In my opinion, they're basically ripping people off with the higher clock speeds. In reality, your better performing RAM in whatever DDRXXXX range you're looking at, has the lowest timings. And in reality, the speed isn't the bottleneck. If the clock speed was a bottleneck, you'd see way more than a 1-4% improvement.

    • @BleedForTheWorld
      @BleedForTheWorld 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Slower timing? Mind explaining to the uneducated masses? Sounds like something Linus should have definitely covered but did not.

    • @tacobender5000
      @tacobender5000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sure. Going to paste the wiki definition below... but basically it's the latency of different memory operations. There's about a dozen different measurements for various operations, but you'll see the most common written as something like 9-9-9-27. If the manufacturer only lists 1 number, they're referring to the cas latency specifically. So you might have a 1600mhz clock speed, but have added latency due to the time it takes to randomly access memory addresses. Different sticks or sets of RAM with the same clock speed will probably have similar results that Linus explained in the video.
      Column Access Strobe (CAS) latency, or CL, is the delay time between the moment a memory controller tells the memory module to access a particular memory column on a RAM module, and the moment the data from the given array location is available on the module's output pins.

    • @Leli196
      @Leli196 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have no clue, the latency in seconds has not changend for many years. The RAM with higher clock speed needs more cycles to respond - yes - but this is not relevant as every cycle consumes less time as there are more cycles per second.
      This should be a no brainer, but people keep spreading this shit all over the Internet.

    • @tacobender5000
      @tacobender5000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Leli196 I guess Crucial has no clue how RAM works then.
      " When the memory controller tells the RAM to access a particular location, the data must go through a number of clock cycles in the Column Address Strobe in order to get to its desired location and “complete” the command. With this in mind, there are two variables that determine a module's latency"
      www.crucial.com/usa/en/memory-performance-speed-latency

    • @RealKanashii
      @RealKanashii 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      On your own reference:
      Which is more important: speed or latency?
      Based on in-depth engineering analysis and extensive testing in the Crucial Performance Lab, the answer to this classic question is speed. In general, as speeds have increased, true latencies have remained approximately the same, meaning faster speeds enable you to achieve a higher level of performance. True latencies haven't necessarily increased, just CAS latencies. And CL ratings are an inaccurate, and often misleading, indicator of true latency (and memory) performance.

    A few tips for over clocking,.. 1) minimize the number of slots per channel. If your system has two slots per channel, populate only one, using the furthermost slot 2) use the smallest memory stick you can. Being unbuffered, the more memory on a stick, the higher the loading and less chance of tolerating higher speeds.

I can start with a reasonable 6GB but that's too low, my next balanced upgrade would be to 12GB, but that is not enough for some applications, so the next perfectly balanced number is 24GB for my motherboard (Sabertooth X58), so I opted for that

    *Short answer: Sure it does (Kind of) matter*.
    But here's the thing. Memory access is in the time of say some small number 200ns. So great nice and fast, you could even with more modern RAM get that access down lower. But the thing is..... Fast RAM means Shit if you don't have enough RAM. Even though most modern OS's use Demand Paging, if your RAM fills up, that beautiful 120ns access time means shit when your Page Faulting every other memory hit; might I add that with even an SSD a page fault can be up to 2,000,000ns. This is called thrashing; when a page is referenced that isn't in memory so it has to access it from physical storage (from a page file). So if your on any kind of budget, getting 8GB of super fast DDR4 is a BAD idea, rather get slower DDR4/3 at 16GB.
    The Degree of multi-programming is decided by the long term job scheduler, it'll put what ever it can into RAM that is being used, so if your running a lot of programs, or heavy RAM hungry programs, fast RAM wont save you. Opt for more cheaper RAM.

    I've always wanted to see a latency vs mhz comparison. In the end,high performance RAM is little more than increased ability to handle data throughput with greater efficiency and lower temps. What happens when you keep 4k ram at 2666, and start dropping latency clocks? After all, if you want a TRUE speed boost, latency is where it's at, not sheer throughput.

      NVMe M.2 to store samples even better, but it's all still gonna be limited by your AD/DA converters and other slowdowns in the chain. There's some good little apps out there now that will analyze your system and show where it's slowing down (assuming you're trying to get minimal delay in live sample use. Check out www.gearslutz.com and do a search).

    this is all short and sweet but leaves cas latency timing s out of the equation..need ram timings included here.....lower vs higher to see the differences

    Should definitely go over this again, since memory has changed a bit since

    for anybody still questioning ram speeds (in games), i just upgraded one of my desktop PC's today that has a 6700k, 16gb 2133mhz(G.skill ripjaws), and MSI 980ti SLI gaming 6G's (running at 1364mhz each) to 16GB of 3200mhz(G.skill Trident Z RGB). i've been building PC's and doing hardware/peripheral repair for most of my life and i still have my original mac II and 486 dx2/66mhz flatbed PC systems, etc. etc. etc. x100 (to let you know how long i've been working on computers). Very simply put, there are alot of tests out there that show ram speeds not changing or barely changing in regards to performance with gaming in particular, but i game on my primary system in 4k(usually on a 1.1 scale above 4k with DSR) on a 70" vizio P series (where 4k is said to have the least amount of gains from the RAM speed increases and much more being seen in 1080p and lower setups), but the increase from 2133mhz to 3200mhz was astronomical for me. I'm running a gigabyte z170X gaming 6 board, 6700k now at a modest 4.5ghz on a corsair H80i, and a samsung 970 evo primary in this particular system and i've seen massive jumps in CPU dependent AND non-CPU dependent games like guild wars 2, shadow of mordor, fallout 4, wolfenstein 2, DOOM, diablo 3, forza horizon 4, and farcry 5. The 1% low increases are exponentially up as well as a result(which to me is most important). To use a specific example: my average, minimum and max FPS in farcry 5 in 4k with everything set to ultra on a 1.1 resolution scale in 4k+ went from 44-55, 39-45, and 50-65. My frames rendered went from 2516 to 3198. This one specific test in particular proves that my 2133mhz was bottle-necking my system something serious. These numbers are all before i OC'd to 4.5ghz so both tests were run at 4.0ghz. i've tested more than 15 games so far and i've seen substantial increases and very immediate and obvious-to-my eyes FPS changes in all games i have tested so far. because of the insane increases, i ordered the exact same set of RAM for my 7600k/1080ftw system and i will post the changes when it comes in later this week. not too bad for a $77 RGB ram set. I know what the infinite amount of charts show online, but what i'm seeing in my real-world tests don't lie. i'm blown away at the increases.

      I'm running a 6700k at 4.6GHz on a Gigabyte Z170x with 16GB 3400Mhz cas16 G. Skill TridentZs. I would like to hold out a little bit longer on a CPU upgrade, am contemplating getting faster RAM. Do you think it will be worth it? Running a 5700XT at 1440p.

      So... what you are saying is buy faster RAM and enable XMP?

    • @cdieseldawg5850
      @cdieseldawg5850 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nozyspy4967 you can enable XMP or manually enter your frequency and timings in bios. it's all very simple. faster RAM decreases CPU utilization in games allowing the GPU to do the work it is supposed to do. especially if you are approaching a bottleneck with an older CPU.

      @@chs_ambs8356 i would definitely hold out. i'm now running a 1080ti FTW3 @ +50 core, +90 memory @ 115% power on the same setup you have now(i also have a 7700K @ 4.9 rig with the same GPU/RAM too). i gave up my 980ti SLI and am incredibly happy with the results going to 1080Ti. i only game in 4K and my 6700k rig stomps the 9900k/2080 test score in firestrike ultra by over 600 points. 1080ti is considerably stronger than 5700XT, but at 1440P, you have an awesome system. definitely keep what you have and don't give into the marketing bull.
