    Great lesson! Ty's Gretchen era Lab tone is the greatest solid state amp tone ever IMO.

      Lost in Germany is a riff that I really struggled with for some reason. As soon as it "clicked" I was fine but yeah, great riff.

    Ty Tabor, my 2nd fave guitarist, a disciple of Phil Keaggy. When Phil pulls out his EBow during live shows, he always says " I found this thing out in the garden" lol.

    Loud and lots of harmonics.

  • @c.g.vonhagenstein7576
    @c.g.vonhagenstein7576 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Really appreciate this one. Some of my favorite playing of Ty's was in Flies and Blue Skies from the Dogman album (how many colors did *you* collect hmm?).
    I don't have an EBow but I *do* have a Sustaniac that has 3 different settings for the feedback of harmonics, and I can get a quite similar effect with that sometimes - tricky because unlike the EBow it affects all the strings at once so you have to work harder to keep it under control. The problem I notice with people doing Sustaniac demos is they seem to crank it to the max and you get a bunch of shrill squealy sounds that aren't very appealing (to me at least). It works much better if you dial it down a lot such that it swells into the harmonics in a way that that mimics natural feedback at high volumes. I also only ever see the Sustaniac demoed with really high gain tones and it can sound fantastic with lower gain.
    I also have a Digitech FreqOut which is a decent alternative for anyone that doesn't want to change out a pickup in their guitar. It has some flaws (sustained notes suddenly cutting out when you don't expect it) but used within its limits it too can be lot of fun. The EBow still has its place among these as it's still its own animal but I lack one of those.
    Sorry for rambling. Thanks for this one. Was highly anticipating it and it did not disappoint!

      C.G. Awesome song, I love the 1st lead lick he plays between verse 1 and verse 2 on that song! And the solo is soo good, well designed. What great lyrics too, no kidding flies and blue skies. Both sides of the coin found here on earth, just and the unjust all walk side by side, so true, there's life + death,and the difference between either one is one single breath! Also, the fact that there is wrong there is right makes the listener, at least me who constantly wonder why there is so much pain on earth, realize that while you hope there is a god or justice, that here on earth its ALL here, w/ no reason or rhyme. One hopes for love, justness, order, something good, but your kid can die, a whole country indeed, even the earth could become subjugated to evil, you could get Lyme disease out of the blue or you could end up being rich as F'k and still end up dying a miserable death. You could see the birth of a child that was in her mommy for 9 months and say, I cant believe we created that. And that little baby ends up being a special needs teacher, saving the world. Its all here, everything imaginable and unimaginable. My friend who died and came back says this side isn't reality, the other side IS REALITY, this side is the dream. He is a medical miracle, had a 99.5% of being a vegetable at best. Dead 42 minutes in the cath lab, and 30 minutes at home from factor 5 clotting. He said once youve been dead, its hard to take things seriously here anymore.

    The ebow does need the magnetics of the pick up for the string to vibrate. The benefit is you can control volume by sliding closer and further away from the pick up. This works particular well in a double coil neck pickup in the rhythm position.

    One other thing that you didn't or forget to mention, when using an ebow to practice in that fashion it forces you to use your pinky! I have seen so many guitar players that are really good players!, they don't use their dam pinky. Great content man!

  • @pedroleal7118
    @pedroleal7118 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know it's an old video, but, two things. First, it was designed (and works better) with Hambucker style PUs (double bobine).
    Second one, with practice, you'll manage to reduce the time for the note to come in, by hammering it with your left hand! Have a great time!
    Oh, it's also great for Harpegios!

    Thank you! You finally did it! You actually do pay attention to subscriber requests. I know it is difficult to find footage of Ty online. (It is also difficult to find footage of Mike Wead online). Some other guitarists who use eBow that I like are Rod Dean (Japan) & David Sylvian.
    By the way, here are some links to some Mike Wead stuff, if you are interested in breaking down some of his stuff (Wead is neo-classical, like Malmsteen, but Wead isn;t all about speed like Malmsteeen is):

    great video - I learned about the E-bow from Robert Fripp (fun fact, although I always thought he used one for his part on 'Heroes', apparently he didn't) - check out his albums with Brian Eno and Andy Summers - fantastic stuff
    I've always been a huge King's X fan as well - in case anyone isn't aware, they're currently touring - I've seen them several times over the last few years - well worth the effort to catch them if you can
    finally, some of you may enjoy a video I posted last weekend - playing along with one of my favorite King's X songs, 'Summerland', from their 2nd release, "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" - th-cam.com/video/JIkCRicnXOE/w-d-xo.html

I own the "summerland" guitar, the custom hamer shown in the video (he actually only used it in the studio for FHL), so I am a ty freak.. man, great video, sorry I was so late to this vid game! to me he was emulating his early sitar type stuff from the early albums but using the ebow to do it... man, this has to be one of the best vids I have seen breaking down ty.. and the EJ connection.. damn... I hear it all, thanks.
