I really want to know what happened to Sam & Evan because this doc is now over a decade old as it aired in 2011. I first watched this documentary 9 years ago. Where are they now?
I was able to find one of Evan's more recent social media accounts. He had top surgery in 2020, and is in a long term relationship with a guy (not Sam) who seems very sweet. Evan does a ton of crafting and art making (crochet and drawing mostly), and seems ok. Still struggling with life, as we all are in our own way, but generally he seems good with himself. (Though the account hasn't been updated in half a year.) I couldn't find any info on Sam, though Even mentioned him very briefly in an older account, noting that he couldn't speak for Sam.
No matter what your opinion of someone's lifestyle is you should NEVER be hurtful or harmful. Telling a person you disagree (when asked) is one thing, EGGING a person is a whole other thing. No one deserves that.

It's not hostility directed to the gender-confused individual, it is expressing concern about the recruitment by others to needlessly question normal feelings. If a 5-year-old girl wants to play with GI Joe dolls rather than Barbie, it does not mean we have to change her pronouns and add a layer of self-doubt on a pre-pubescent kid. If a teen is seeking attention or reaching out for sexual guidance, it does not mean the parents need to initiate hormone shots. We already have too many distractions in today's society. Granted, beating up a gender confused individual will only make it worse for them, that is not the proper road either.

Granted, this is way out of date but I think Evan’s biggest problem is that he/she is extremely overweight and this is a major health problem and a problem in many other ways. I understand the need to eat to deal with difficult emotions. Taking on the carnivore animal-based diet helped me anonymously with this issue and it took some time. It would be interesting to see how they are doing now.

It is disingenuous to call them men and women when men and women are biological from birth. By all means transition but always in the trans category. The problem then becomes that "usual and unusual" morphs into "right" or "wrong". Human behavior with many subtle variations is really rather universal. We tend to have leaders/rulers, we tend to assume right and wrong as prescribed by tradition, and we all react to the unusual or foreign as an affront and something that is potentially dangerous. The struggle to overcome that "fear" is the evolution from human to humane. We have all been "trained" within a society by our families, by our neighbors, by our schools and churches, and by our governors. We really can't help but existing with prejudice, however, we fail often to recognize the existence of a greater morality simply because we fear the reaction of others. So, we fail to help our children to become better people than ourselves simply because, "whatever would the neighbors think?"
Regarding the internal ultrasound: What does it take for a doctor to realize that the standard way of doing things is clearly not acceptable in this specific patient? That it possibly leaves a mental scar for life?
There are basically two options, surgery, or internal ultrasound. It's uncomfortable, yes, but needed to be done to be sure. Of course, it's best for them to prepare people for what will happen well before an appointment, and give them the option to discuss it with a therapist if it's really triggering.

It takes an average of 10 years for people to realize their transition is a ,mistake. How long will it take these two? Yes, some really are trans. But until you are fully mature, over 25, and have done extensive therapy to be sure there aren't other things going on, you aren't trans.
