Whenever a story starts with "my friend got really drunk and". It always ends with either one of the funniest stories you've ever heard or one of worst things that ever happened
I wish I had a dad like Chael who gave me the 'desert talk' before I went to Afghanistan. Twice. He's right - the desert sucks. Did see a tortoise wandering out there all alone so not all bad.
I was also a big fan of Evan Tanner! I’ll never forget seeing him fight Rich Franklin live in Atlantic City. He lost the title, yet he still stopped and posed for a photo for me on the way to the locker room afterwards and was all smiles. Legend.
Evan was likely depressed, perhaps even suicidal and tempting fate. I've done similar dumb shit like walking through dangerous neighborhoods at times because of suicidal depression, it's a strange thing.
Damn Chael, I never indulged too much into the story further than he went into the desert on a motorcycle and died.. Without any reading I assumed he went to go camping. Your elaboration struck me as critical yet sincere.. Thank you. That lesson hopefully stops people just being 'yes' men to people they idolize instead of maybe making a rational suggestion that something someone may be doing is ignorant. Even if that someone is your hero.
The pilgrimage thing is what I've always heard too...he was seeking out "enlightenment" or whatever. Glad you set the record straight Chael. This is kind of shocking to hear-especially the cult-like antics. Very weird. Sounds like he had some issues...possibly needing some psychiatry evaluation? That stuff he was doing isn't normal. Did he do something stupid? Yes. But if he had sought out someone to talk to, it might not have happened. Poor guy.

I remember Evan and Rich Franklin fighting a slugfest early in the UFC. It was so good a fight Dana gave them both $7,000 Rolex watches. This was back when Dana had a heart and took care of his fighters.
On point here as usual Chael. I live in the UK and MMA was just beginning it's ascent to mainstream popularity when Evan died, and whilst it was shocking, when I read some of his Myspace posts, I thought it was all pretty twisted. If only there had been more help available for MMA fighters back then..
I just watched “Once I was a Champion” , I had thought that Chael’s statements were tough, but this makes more sense. I loved some of Evan’s ideas but he seemed like a difficult person to be connected to. RIP champ

Thank you, Chael. Voice the hard truths for what they are even when it’s hard to hear. I’m sorry for your loss. Maybe your brutal honesty will dissuade the next guy from a well intentioned but foolish mistake that would cost him his life.
Evan Tanner. Really enjoyed his fights and the corn rows. Props to Uncle Chael since this research helped me realize I have potential heatstroke or hyperthermia from work. Head was still hot so started eating otter pops and feeling much better after a few days of struggle.
He was a personal friend of mine. And everything he is saying is facts. His last ride was, at least what he told me, was a suicide ride. He wanted to drive so far out, like stated, to where he would have to walk back to survive. Knowing that it's not humanly possible. Rip Tanner lost but forgot. Dude had demons that would kill us all.
He was a natural clean fighter, learnt mma entirely by watching videos, had great chin along with wonderful ground game with which he ended with a mma record of 32wins 8 losses overall 👏👏👏👏👏 I'm so proud to be born on 11 February the same day and month wonderboy boy, bantam weight champion petr yan, movsar evloev,Ken shamrock and evan tanner were born🎂 RIP big bro tanner

Nice honest post Chael, I was huge fan of Evan and his musings were interesting and informative, but we all know that Evan had issues with alcohol, I would rather have Evan alive than dead - the film "Once I was a Champion" shows his issues as well as his conquests. The world misses Evan, but the way he died was just careless.
At the end i felt like Chael was yelling at us what he wanted to say to Evan if he had of known or had the chance. R.I.P. tanner. The first fight i ever saw after watching the oldschool UFC 1-10 as a kid was him vs Franklin. He always reminded me a lil bit of Nick Nolte so its sad to hear he had similar struggles
Evan was the dude. I loved that guy. He had so much heart. He got hit in the head too many times, and the drinking just made it worse. He went out young, but I don't think he would have been able to hold a conversation now if he would have lived this long. Too much abuse to his central nervous system. I have a friend that is 54 years old, and he's in a nursing home from the same combination.
Alcohol just doesn't affect CNS but also bones, liver, stomach overall everthing even the body's ability to absorb nutrition also even adversely affects testosterone. I used to be an alcoholic in my early 20's I was tricked into believe by peers that alcohol gives strength, courage, makes a man alpha but once I realised that it's all lame BS I gave it up immediately

Could the messages Evan sent thru MySpace about the drive w/his motorcycle into the desert maybe have been his cry for help? My fiancé is a recovering alcoholic (he’ll be 3yrs sober at end of Oct). I watched him struggle with it for YEARS. He’s a Chael fan, but even more so he’s a big Evan Tanner fan, because he sees a lot of himself in Evan’s story and journey. There were so fucking many times where my fiancé made stupid choices while wasted drunk & it *nearly* cost him his life (he’d always be saved by the skin of his teeth, usually by someone else). One specific time sticks out; the time he’d been up drinking for DAYS (familiar, yes?) and was so horribly depressed & sleep deprived after 4 days up that he tried to get in his car blackout drunk & drive as fast as possible (down the rural country road we live off of), knowing he was so trashed he’d almost assuredly crash & kill himself. I had to WRESTLE his keys out of his hands & throw them out into the dark of our big back field so he’d not find them. I had called the police & was able to get him on a psych hold @ hospital so he could go thru alcohol withdrawal under supervision (thank GOD). But him drunk & incoherently saying something to me before leaving the house was him literally crying out to me for help, thank fuck I realized it in time... What Uncle Chael said is right, when someone is maybe sending signals for help, don’t push them closer towards the edge but instead reach out & ask them if they’re doing ok, see if they need someone talk with etc... it’s hard af to ask sometimes, bc it can be awkward or maybe you worry it can cause some waves if ya do, but it’s worth it to just ASK them. It reminds the person you’re asking that someone cares enough about them to check in, & shows them you are here for THEM, not here to judge (& if they need support/help in future, it reminds them you’re a good & positive force in their life that they can trust). I’m sorry for the long comment, but I feel for Evan, and his friends & fam so much. I know it can so fucking easily have been my fiancé ending up with the same fate. RIP Evan🤍
Anybody else here in 2021 thinking about Evan? I was always a fan, and as fate would have it I met him at a blackjack table. Long hair, long beard... said he was in disguise. This was in Vegas at a UFC fight... hell 15 years ago maybe. So we played blackjack all night together. Good time. The guy touched me that night. Told me about his home for troubled youth, told me his path. Humble. Strong. And within a year dead. I have and treasure my Believe in the Power of One shirt. And I knew him for maybe 5 hours.
It's 2023 and I still cherish my now very rare "Believe" shirt and my even rarer conversations with the widely misunderstood man known as Evan Tanner. RIP
There's a romantic ideal we're all susceptible to along the lines of I so want to live I'm willing to risk dying to do it. If I remember correctly Evan had lost a few fights and this was his quest to get back on track. An epoch into the desert and if I survive I'll gain something that will put me back on track and so on. Like I said we're all susceptible. Romantic ideas and ideals out of hand become childish, dumb, dangerous and tragic. Life is precious. Chill. Learn to love life and the little things. Go for something if you feel compelled. If it doesn't work out be proud you at least tried to go for something. Many are so afraid and so boring they won't do that.
@@Jessica-to8um That is a perfect example of exactly what I was talking about. Overly romantic immature ideals. Heading out into the desert saying I might die like it's going to make you a better fighter makes as much sense as Nacho Libre shooting Esqueleto in the back with a blunt arrow or or stirring up a hornets nest and getting him stung. Clueless young men trying to figure out how to be men and how to make themselves a better fighter. Life is precious. Throwing it away on some childlike ideal before your brain is even fully developed is not living. It's stupid. I'll tell you another pre-appointing. There's a level at anything that is as far as you're going to get. Moving on to something else is embracing life. Killing yourself because you can't accept it is not. But don't think I don't get the gest of what you're saying and agree. Taking risks going for something getting off the couch unplugging from the matrix but the devil is in the details. You have to also live within the confines of reality and if you've gone as far as you can as a fighter move on. If you want to keep trying keep trying but risking your life in a foolish way isn't going to somehow magically make you a better fighter or more able to accomplish something or have some epiphany when maybe the epiphany you really need to have is this is as far as I can go it's time to get on with something else. Trust me I'm not coming down I'm trying to help and I can relate to all of this because I am all of this. I've thought it or done it too.

I really hope it teaches younger generation to realize every decision we make of every min could be life or death and alcohol and drug abuse helps no problem . R.I.P Evan Tanner 🙏
RIP to my Brother Santino Fernandez
RIP Evan Tanner
RIP to a great person you lost too
My grandma sucked
Thanks Chael for the brutal honesty... and I am sorry for your loss.
Mental illness and addiction are terrible things and its usually too late by the time it's realized. RIP 🙏
I've done similar dumb shit like walking through dangerous neighborhoods at times because of suicidal depression, it's a strange thing.
can you develop
It’s capturing how you let out raw emotion Chael. I couldn’t look away.
Kudos, for Being Responsible...with The Truth!
I was stationed in 29 palms when that happened. It was insane. Tanner was one of my favorites. But It doesn't make any sense.
Poor guy.
I had no idea! That’s wild and sad at the same time! Thanks for sharing Uncle Chael 🙏
Thanks for sharing. I am deeply sorry for your loss and the circumstances in which it occured.
Sorry to hear bout even tanner, always thought he just retired. A fight home would've been a great idea...and riding off into the sunset does to...
Neil magny ......khamzat...are u ducking him? he called u out , u act like u didnt hear ......lmao the irony talking about everyone scared of his call out but avoiding magny.....but he wants to call out nate diaz... and tyroon woodley and a major lose streak .....wow what a beast
He literally just talked about that on fight island
@Ace A hard to believe until he has a tougher opponent
Now I know uncle chael is clone..he’s commenting at Bellator and still putting videos out..still undisputed
I remember Evan and Rich Franklin fighting a slugfest early in the UFC. It was so good a fight Dana gave them both $7,000 Rolex watches. This was back when Dana had a heart and took care of his fighters.
Tito changed him lol
He was found 2 miles from his campsite
On point here as usual Chael. I live in the UK and MMA was just beginning it's ascent to mainstream popularity when Evan died, and whilst it was shocking, when I read some of his Myspace posts, I thought it was all pretty twisted.
If only there had been more help available for MMA fighters back then..
I just watched “Once I was a Champion” , I had thought that Chael’s statements were tough, but this makes more sense. I loved some of Evan’s ideas but he seemed like a difficult person to be connected to. RIP champ
I didn't know that MySpace part crazy. Thanks for the info Nothing but love for ya guys. R.I.P. Evan Tanner
Watched a couple of them and definitely a romanticized story considering this. Thanks for sharing and RIP Mr Evan’s, may you have found what you were seeking 🙏
This talk was incredible! Thanks for sharing this Chael.
Chael that was the heaviest thing I ever heard you talk about... Thank you
Happy that Chael is setting the record straight. I think it’ll make people more considerate of Evan’s legacy.
I'll share a pic of us if I can figure out how to, that way I don't get stupid comment
Evan was my favorite fighter back in the day. His walkout song was my last myspace song. He was a talented fighter. I just knew he died in the desert. Thanks for sharing your truth!
This is the realest we've ever seen Chael.
Chael always keeps it real and sticks to his guns, respect
A perfect example of, you may not Always be right, but you're Always my Brother. R.I.P. Evan Tanner
You can tell Chael really cared for Evan. He is a champ that will never be forgotten.
Thanks Chael you did right by him
Nice honest post Chael, I was huge fan of Evan and his musings were interesting and informative, but we all know that Evan had issues with alcohol, I would rather have Evan alive than dead - the film "Once I was a Champion" shows his issues as well as his conquests. The world misses Evan, but the way he died was just careless.
Thank you for this, I was going down the Evan rabbit hole..I needed to see this Uncle Chael.
Thanks Chael. He was always one of my faves.
5:32 for the leg cross, but such a sobering topic any time Evan Tanner is discussed.
Thank you for your perspective on this Uncle Chael.
He kinda sounded like woody from toy story with that tone. A very sad story.
I liked before the video even started When I saw Evan Tanners name.. Thank you Uncle Chael PS Educate these new and casual fans in the great history of our sport !!!! Team Quest 4 Life !!!!!!!!
Chael will never understand. Love you Chael.
I could listen to this for hours: Evan Tanner was an interesting man and Chael one of the best MMA story tellers.
Hey, always enjoyed your fights. I’m glad i’m glad you trained with him. Take care brother man.
One of my favorites of all time. I remember all this happening.
I always loved watching evan fight live. Those were good times
This was real as fuck, can tell you seriously cared about your friend Uncle Chael, RIP to Evan
Evan Tanner should be in the Pioneer division of the UFC's Hall of Fame.
Tanner was the creator of the tuff house
Amen. I think Evan would second everything you said.
I remember being happy when Evan added me on myspace....
facts brah..Chael always keeps it real
Well I was I. Georgia . I went to the Singer brothers in Athens Georgia . it was just a storage unit . I thought I was the shit and I stayed drunk . that is the truth . I almost died. . I appreciate what you shared . it's so hard to lose a friend . thank you for being honest . you are a good man .
Chael is the truth.
this is odd... but not having a dad... hearing all these things all this time... i can say without a shadow of a doubt, thanks and i love you Chael u say a lot of things i need to be said outthere really man you doing great stuff here
@@Steven-rp8zo im 39... all the way asking for advice gettin close to grown (mind wise) ppl... no one gave a fk... in fact at my 37 i asked my dad for help(why?) long history short he would lose money if he say yes he would lose money if say no.... so . he just suicide (no joke) ... im a little passed out tbh and im amazed am not a villian yet lol well dont get scared im a comedian too, also from mexico that xplain the eye hurting writting etc etc.... but the history is true... also a gamer sabbotaged by my isp.... hmmmm i just need a lot of money rn
