How to Make a Career out of Adventure

- One of the questions I get asked the most often is 'I love travel and adventure. How can I get paid to do it?'
Here are my thoughts and suggestions.

1. You are definitely NOT ugly. 😉😊
2. This video - while it wasn't muddied with all the studio-edit tricks, sound effects, etc. one is, now, usually overloaded with on social media - it WAS one of the most informative & inspirational I've seen.
So THANK YOU for making such a down-to-earth & simple layout of what it truly takes. And what's more, being honest about an adventurer's true life scenario, without the Instagram glamour.
If anything, this vlog made me realize that it makes more sense to focus on LIVING adventurously, rather than planning for it, based on "$." I'll be following, more~

Fabulous advice - your video has actually re-affirmed how unlikely it is for myself at 35 to begin, work towards and become a successful and paid adventurer (with other projects and plans running simultaneously I might add) but do you know, that’s ok! It’s important to be grounded I think.
I completely agree about the overwhelming number of empty, talentless, uneducated, content poor models/life-coaches that saturate the social media world and I will neither subscribe to them or become them!
What I will do is follow your advice (and mine) and be the best that I can be - in my case that will be to complete my education. My dream is that my post-graduate studies will satiate the travel/adventure thirst enough and still pay the bills - a career as a Glaciologist is my future (hopefully).

As a writer, do you have a list of your favourite adventure books, and the same with your personal development books? (I see Tim Ferris taking up a good deal of real estate on your shelves back there 👍😊)
Would love to watch/listen to any content you have on what and why with these two lists.
The insight and inspiration from great authors is what drives and shapes a lot of the adventures that I’ve attempted to pursue in the past. The mistakes and learning that have arisen from that have strongly influenced my life from there onwards...
Conclusion for those who don't watch the entire video:
1) Work hard, very hard... and it still might take years or decades before payoff
2) Learn to become talented/skilled (talks, writing, films)
3) USP: unique selling point, what's your uniqueness, that people might be interested in? (Mine: unsupported treks / Alastair: Microadventures (check his big ones too)
4) Really go out and do an expedition. Don't go for fame or money, this doesn't work or works if you are indeed rich/beautiful/well connected (parents).
PS: It's even harder if you are from a country where adventure isn't part of the culture. Easier in the UK (but more competition with other adventurers). Probably harder if you are let's say living in Portugal (smaller potential audience and the media isn't "adventure" aware)

Hey man I was with you when I was your age! Learn a ton about the stuff you like and dont skip out on the stuff you need to learn to get better! I know this sounds "boring" (trust me I hated it) but learn about how to save money and how to make money, learn about finances, and how businesses do things. And all that boring stuff early, schools not always the best option but whatever thing you want, like say a survival instructor, learn all the things that will allow you to do that. because more you save up and understand the more "tools" you have! then you can create any thing you want! always stay humble, but be confident in your skills! Great job man! live it up!
Fitness is big to! It DOES NOT matter how young you are, things take time to learn for any age. its all about starting and staying in a routine

Alastair thanks for the video. As a nearly 40 year old that is walking away from his career next year to be a fulltime adventurer this was great to see. One question, you mentioned about the blog and seemed to imply they are outdated now. Do you not recommend starting a blog anymore? Is it not financially/time viable?
If I was beginning today I would still blog and make films. But I would also ensure that everything I kept on my own website I also shared on social sites. Having your own bit of real estate on the internet will always be important, I feel. If I could only focus on one thing in this day and age, I'd focus on video.

No! You are going to have to do the grunt work if you're going to turn your passion into a worthwhile vocation.' I agree. However, hard work can be enjoyable. I have a dream and am working on it - it involves the downcast in our world. As far as films is concerned there is a lesson in what you said. Make sure the gear is top rate! I need little money and yes I do have a reasonably big adventure in mind. I've started my email list! Yes, Rob Macfarlane and being real - It's why I started with the Wye. Enjoyed that. Take care.
