  • If you haven't even gotten your first customer yet, then this is the video for you! I'm going to be talking about 5 things you should do before starting your home baking business in order to ensure a successful start. I am by no means an expert, just someone using her anecdotal experience over the years to give you some useful pointers that helped me out in the beginning!

She's got some good advice but I do strongly disagree about starting your business with lower prices. In my opinion, that is never a good idea. I owned a very successful baking business in the states. Starting with lower prices for one will bring in the clientele who are looking for a deal and most often are the ones who will nickel and dime you over everything and have the most complaints. Also, when you set your prices lower initially you are devaluing your product which tells customers your goods are not worth spending full price on. If you undercut what your prices should be, the customer will feel validated as to why your work is not worth more money. When you go to raise prices, your client demographic most likely will not support the increase and will not return and the ones who aren't necessarily those who are only looking for a deal still probably won't pay more because you've cemented in that your products aren't worth more. The best advice I can offer and is what I did, don't decide to open a baking business overnight. Especially at home businesses have that luxury to start on your schedule. It's not going anywhere so really take your time getting everything right. When you do launch, you are polished and look like a professional business who's products are worth the price. Spend several months prior to launch honing your skills. Dive in to the deep end of constantly baking. Don't be afraid to completely ditch a creation if it's not good enough to photograph. Quality over quantity. During this time, you are building your skill set and gaining more items you can show you've done. Also, invest in proper branding and packaging. I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to have a sleek professional front. Customers love to support small businesses so present yourself as such rather than someone who's simply working out of their kitchen. Yes, she is absolutely correct about taking orders for free from friends and family because it gives you experience with working with real customers and helps you nail down what your ordering process looks like. I did ask that they would cover the cost of materials since it adds up very quickly. Lastly, while you are stepping up your game prior to launch, really work on your social media presence. Because once you launch, you will have an online presence that predates your launch and gives the appearance of an established business. Hope this helps someone and good luck on a new adventure for those out there wanting to take the plunge.

I'm 15 years old and started my bakery during the pandemic when my parents were laid off which meant I bately had any capital so I started by selling muffins which required no mixer to gain exposure and raise money for what i really wanted to do... CAKES!
So im in the process of rebranding and perfecting some recipes. Its the birthday season in my family so im going to use that oppurtunity to get some photos for my portfolio so i can launch my cake order form on my instagram.
(you must be tired of seeing my comments on your videos. lol)

Omg thank you so much for this video. I have been waiting to start up a business, but have been so nervous to get started as a home bakery, nervous about a bunch of things. I have over the years baked for friends and family for free, and have only sold 2 cakes
Sold for just my costs. So I have got to try a lot of stuff. Mastered sharp clean edges on butter cream, pipping roses, but actually have plans on a cake I am about to be doing the next couple days, with rosette's and chocolate lace, a little experience with fondant & characters & sugar glass.
Over the years I bought a bunch of stuff, from many different places, so I have a ton of tools. And have decided so far my biggest waste of Money was the Russian tips. The ones that pipe a flower with just a little squeeze lmao yeah I can't get that right. I have been looking into buying bulk, and so far have found some stuff would be cheaper to start just buying local, some on line and some from bakery wholesales or restaurant wholesale. I love taking pictures, and I use either a natural background, with natural light or a Black Sheet (I know crazy but it looks good) with either natural light, or drop lights, placed to be sure to show everything with a slight shadowing. I need to get some supplies built up before getting started started, boxes sugar flour etc. Which I should have enough in the next month with out breaking the bank. But I was just asked to do a bake sale. A local fundraiser. I would be donating everything. Probably all the baked goods lol. They did say that I can leave business cards and place stickers on the boxes & packages of my basic info. So excited & nervous. But I don't expect to sell a lot locally.

I started selling brownies at my school and some people bullied me about it now I feel bad about me baking and cooking skills even though it’s something I really love to do. I love your videos by the way they are really encouraging and make me believe more and I learn a lot from you!!

    • @SweetDreamsBakeShoppe

Do NOT listen to them. We all, at some point in our lives, will receive criticism as we continue on in whatever we try to set out to do. Try to remember that people that bully others are truly unhappy about something else because happy people don't set out to hurt others. Keep going!

I have a few pictures of thing sive made in the past but I feel not enough content for insta! I haven't used it since 2017 so I guess I'm just lost at this point.😄

so to expand my skills and portfolio i have been taking things to work for people to try. the only problem is the most opiniated is my dad/manager but he likes things very specific so anytime i make something that isn't something he already likes he tells me to fix it by making it what his preferences are. how do i respond to that without sounding ungrateful for the feedback?

Can you recommend what are the base flavors of cake we should master . There are so many I’m getting overwhelmed.
