It’s Riqa! A cancelled 3rd person shooter for the Nintendo 64. Developed by Bits Studios, Riqa was briefly mentioned in the gaming press, being touted as Tomb Raider for the N64 due to its female protagonist and 3rd person perspective. As it turns out though, the game actually had 3 playable characters: Riqa, Tak, and Kane. Riqa was recently released online by former Bits Studios team member Ten Shu.

Pre Rogue Ops!?
They're really going to leak every N64 game except for Earthbound 64.
It’s first-party. Those tend not to leak
@@dedion-boutonondemandZelda 64 on the development cartridge, or the 64DD version of Mario 64, both leaked, and are both WAY more first party than Mother 3 64. That's like saying Kirby or Pokemon are first party.
He already talked about it
Earthbound 64 and Twelve Tales: Conker 64 will never be found 😢. Been waiting years for both.
EB64, Conker 64 and RE0 are never going to surface
I wish a certain former British developer did the same as this employee with the prototypes he has
A "Rare" one, if you will...
I mean there's not exactly many note worthy prototypes that are likely to exist in any expansive form, are there? I figured most of their unreleased titles were basically just announcement of concept stage rather than being near complete or any amount playable games.
am I wrong?
Its just interesting to have them, for preservation purposes @@dizzydee4889
@@dizzydee4889 Very wrong.
@@dizzydee4889 this former developer has confirmed working copies of builds of Twelve tails Conker 64 and Project Dream. Having access to anything relating to those 2 projects would be worth it's weight in gold ten times easily.
The "anime-inspired western action game from the late 90s to the early 2000s" has gotta be my favourite genre (it gave me 2 of my faves: Shogo and Oni), so the fact that this was cancelled makes me extra sad.
I loved Shogo!
ONI by Bungie is a good example
Ufff SHOGO was one of My first PC games back in 1999 great story and graphics
Love the findings of cancelled/unreleased games, it’s like finding an ancient relic
no, ancient would mean way old, like centuries
@@videostash413 Fair, but since digital gaming isn't that old yet, it's quite a relic! :D
@@videostash413 That's why he said 'like'.
@@videostash413In gaming's case, anything from the 5th generation and before is ancient.
Luigiblood is a hero to the people.
Thanks for covering this. Shame it was cancelled. Looked like Oni on PS2.
Sometimes it's a shame that the "almost" released games end up being the most interesting parts of the N64.
Bro, I love your anime videos!
they could actually finish this game now that N64 after market games are a thing.
people prob moved on and doing other things, doubt they go back to it
@@Yoshizuyuner you never know. Piko might buy it up and finish it up.
You assume they not only have the source code, but also Nintendo's development tools/kit, still.
@@IoIxDThat didn't stopped Glover 2 for getting rereleased
@@IoIxD Unnecessary.
this feels like it woulda been a cult hit on N64. which is why I also guess why it was better off not gettin released because that doesnt feel like it would've been the most profitable outcome
I remember reading all the N64 magazines in the late 90's and never once remember hearing of this game at all
It was briefly mentioned in an article in N64Gamer (Aus Magazine ) from an Expo presentation alongside other games showcased. That is the only mention of it I remember as a kid.
This game looks like it had so much style
I can see myself really liking this game as a kid back in the early 2000s. I wish I could help this game be finished out. Maybe there is already some N64 modders working into it.
You've made an old man very happy seeing this again. As the engine & control programmer for this one. The reason for the debug menu, was that we were hoping to target the DD drive.. but never got one, so it was spread across 5 carts.
Amazing information! I'd love to talk to you more about Riqa and the development experience if you're interested/willing. My email is hard4games@gmail.com.
It would be a Public Service if this game was completely reverse engineered.
feels like a combination of Ghost in the Shell and Perfect Dark, I can dig it
I was thinking something similar. Even the aiming reticle and title screen were similar
So now i wanna play Dinosaur Planet, Quest 2 and RIQA.
Dinosaur Planet was leaked and is completely playable IIRC
This just reinforces how much more effort people used to put into title and menu screens back in the day compared to many modern games these days like star field.
Holy fuck if I never see people bitch about Starfjeld again it will be too soon. People's brains are so nostalgia rotted that they're lamenting main menus. Fucking hell
@@RootVegetabIe and some people are so indoctrinated into accepting mediocrity that they become normalized into paying more for less and besmirching others who wont do the same.
@@procow2274 Just don't buy the damn game.
Scorn has a very impressive main menu that transitions into the game seamlessly for example.
Keep shitting on "modern games".
@@DasAntiNaziBroetchenstop making two hour long vidya nothingburger "reviews" about obscure shit that's better left forgotten if it falls into you people's hands but no, you just HAVE to go around and shit up everything with whatever agenda you have in mind don't you?
There's no doubt I'd have picked this up.
I probably would buy it, it looks super cool. (this game needs to be decompiled to fix all those "issues")
Bro, I would have snacked this up like cotton candy. This looks so good. I didn't even know this thing existed. This is top shelf
I played the leak and it's a decent game. It's no tomb raider though. The people who keep making the comparison obviously never played tomb raider.
Well, it is unfinished, so not a fair comparison.
@@ZachAttackIsBack True, but the main reason the comparison doesn't make sense is that riqa is a completely different genre than Tomb Raider, with different controls. If you played tomb raider, you know it's mostly centered around climbing, solving puzzles, dodging traps, and has tank controls. But Riqa is a runner gunner, with standard controls. I guess people see a female protagonist and immediately compare the two games.
Aesthetically, it reminds me of Tomb Raider, Siphon Filter, and even a little Deus Ex. Also - a Western-developed game going for an anime look like Shogo: Mobile Armor Division (1998) and Oni (2001). A product of its time in the best way!
This is absolutely amazing! I think it would be awesome if someone finished the game. Hard4Games is just such a special channel and I love you guys.
This is so cool.. There are a handful of cancelled games that I wish made their way online for the public to enjoy. Whatever content is actually playable, that is.
"Fighting force 2" for Sony PlayStation and Sega Dreamcast is very close to this game's concept. It even has a first-person shooting system.
"mom can we buy Jet Force Gemini?" "no you have Jet Force Gemini at home" 🤣 still cool you preserved it though!
I totally would have bought this had it been released back in the day.
This game looks like it would have been so much fun. Glad to see this got recovered.
Cool that the game have masamune shirou art and designs, for anyone interested, the guy still working to this day doing manga
Love how the main girl's face looks like a Ghost in The Shell manga trace-over and blue-hair dude looks like a DragonBall + something else manga trace-over. The other girl looks really familiar but I can't place it!
I get RE1 Jill Valentine vibes from her.
I'd really love to hear the entire track that plays at 6:33 and the rest of the soundtrack.
The environments look great too; it really captures the charm of that era.
Had it been released and I knew about this I might have played it back then, but I would have for sure today.
Thanks for the upload!
Looks pretty cool. It think that Masamune Shirow, creator of Ghost in the Shell, did the the main menu art. I dig it!
Wooah! THat looks amazing for an N64 game right down to the last detail. Ever place looks amazing. The models look so pretty and so do their animations. This could have been one the N64's 1995 tech demos.
7:16 that in game monitor, has a green text crawl that reminds me of Goldeneye. I wonder if Bits Studios were trading developers or assets with Rare.
Lots of similarities, but I don't know why, maybe the common libraries that came with the n64 dev kits, or copy cat design? Stair ramps look like Ocarina, Aiming looks like Perfect Dark... jumping like Tomb Raider?. So many similarities make it look like a high effort asset rip/flip game. Crawling monitor is actually very easy to implement, it's just a scrolling texture often seen with water, doesn't even need animation frames.
Any canceled N64 game is sad to see because this system could have use it.
I'm glad you chose to run this in upscaled on an emulator. Running games at 320x240 on real hardware looks awful.
N64 games do look surprisingly clean on a modest-sized CRT, to the point that it's hard to believe they're actually running at 240p.
That said, the finer details are still a bit soupy, and I prefer to just play in HD on an emulator. Looks like Riqa could even run at a solid 60fps with the right settings!
This game had a sister game called Thieve’s World. Was a stealth based cat burglar game with another leading lady character. Hopefully that’s the next game leaked.
Loving that Star Trek phaser sound effect
Awesome video thanks for sharing
Would love to see the ROMS combined into a more completed project. This game looks amazing! Definitely the type of game that was missing from the N64 library back in the day!
imo...by the time 3rd parties became familiar with the N64 hardware say in 1999 for release in the following year or so the platform was dying. Many studios moved their projects onto the GCN, but the GameCube had a completely different architectural design philosophy. I'd imagine the same fate RIQA saw was common around the turn of the century.
The art style looks really good on this! Shame this didn't get finished.
Looks like the person behind some of the art was a Masamune Shirow fan 😁
I love random history like this. It's great to see a lost game finally get into the hands of players.
This is like perfect dark meets jet force gemini.
Kind of interesting how the in-game models have a darker skin tone when compared to the 2D illustrations. I wonder if this is just a simple design change during development or if there was something else going on, given how tense design choices like this can be.
its too bad this wasnt finished. this is the kind of N64 game i would go "ive never heard of this, but it looks pretty fun."
and i have seen a few of those for released games.
Wow! Looks exactly like a game that I love to play. Is there a finished or near finished build available?
Honestly Nintendo should've bundled the N64DD with the console at its launch right from the start. It wouldn't have been all that expensive either. No more than say $250 combined the cartridge console itself and the N64DD put together. More than likely 90+% of the games planned for the N64 via the DD would've seen release; including Riqa!
This morphed into Rouge Ops for the Gamecube/PS2/xbox
Interesting. Conker's Twelve Tails... You're next.
Nice i love cancelled N64 games videos very interesting the game today.
Some of the element from riqa was incorporated in Rogue Ops.
Looks like Jet Force Gemini and Perfect Dark had a baby and it just really wanted love and affection but was instead callously disregarded
This looks like it could've been rad as hell given some time to polish up the graphics and tune the controls. Reminds me of Oni but without the hand to hand combat options.
Never heard of this one but I’m glad it got leaked! I’m excited to try it out.
The design of the menus remind me a lot to Gun Valkyrie on the OG XBOX, sad that RIQA got cancelled
nice work - still waiting on that BETA goldeneye cartridge that "someone" claims to have
Tbh this game looks much cooler and even Fun compared to nowadays games .
Shame , it was cancled but this could be salvagable when some great coders would complete it .
But even in its unfinished state it looks really awesome.
Looks really good for an N64 game. Thanks for sharing!
This is really cool. I doubt it would happen but if LRG managed to give this a Shantae Advance-like shot at a second life and to finish developing it, I'd love that.
I do stumble upon one of the game got thankfully leaked in the gigaleak gameboy lotcheck. In a tweet i saw one of the ex employee Who worked in bloomland Philip Marlowe by quest by the original vision had initialy planning lot of levels but the later got released by cutting the of be streamlined. I talked to him if he had master rom, and sure does but unfortunetly it cant due the scared being layd off or laws nlt sharing cause shaneingan. Is one of those case the devs actualy want preserve is old projects some occasions but they cant due to contracts.
Do we know why they didn't get to finish & release it?
5:44 why that gun sound like one of those (kicks) in a dub step beat that be in the clubs
Probably used a sound library.
It would be awesome if the developer could also find some scripts for the original plot, so modders could implement some DOOM-like "cutscenes" (text over background) between levels, maybe even with some voice acting. Maybe even with character sprites popping up when talking.
The game is so close to being complete and it's such a cool game.
The developer most likely knows how the final mission would have played out. Modders more than likely can remake it.
I really hope that somebody takes action.
Also... Earthbound 64 when? 😂
This looks like it would have been awesome! I wish it was finished.
Wow, I really would have enjoyed this back then. Shame it never came out.
Great job
This looks cool
I think this game would have done well, depending on when it would be released looks cool.
To think that some mf is still gate keeping the old oot spaceworld build is insane..
Whippet blaster sounds like a kick drum and barn owl
Wow this game looks legit. Good art direction, development looks like it went far. Strange it wasn't released.
There is no audio or sound; am I deaf or has my cellphone stopped working properly !? 😮
60 FPS menus, eh? Always nice to see
I bet I would have enjoyed this back in the day had it come out.
Happy day! Never thought we would get to play this! That is one one more lost game off my list. Next up, mother 64!
Riqa looks like an interesting game, so I could have definitely seen myself playing it. There is a certain level of charm to it that makes me feel like it could have been a hidden gem on the N64 if it were released.
Damn, it looks like a real N64 game. You can't recreate this aesthetic from scratch, you had to be there at the time.
Here I am, playing unreleased N64 games on my iPhone... what is this timeline?
I love those menus! Why does no one make fun menus and title screens anymore?
This looks like it could have been one of the best triple-A games on the system. So sad it was cancelled. :(
I never heard about this game before, it looks nice, such a shame that it never got finished.
Man this looks awesome if this came out today I’d buy it
This is actually very impressive.
Cant wait to add this one to the everdrive!
Thats a pretty damned good looking game! Its a shame it never came out. I would have been stoked to play something like that on N64.
It looks like it has some real potential.
Fascinating.
Gonna tell people this is Dirge of Cerberus
If someone could try and attempt to finish this game… Then I would be more than very happy.🦇
This is amazing!!!
I just hope that panel de pon 64 gets released
I love all the N64 content.
Anyone know the circumstances on why this was cancelled? How long was it in development?
That game looks awesome. I am guessing it would havae dethrowned Perfect dark.
Looks like something I would have played. Would have been an epic launch game. They would have sold out for sure.
Looks like it would have been a good game! Nice animation for the 64 too!
that would have been an AMAZING looking N64 game
We have Tomb Raider at home.
That’s amazing man
Jeez man how many canceled N64 games were there? All I know are conker before it was given a makeover and made into Bad Fur Day and Dinosaur Planet 🦕 🌎 before it was put into the GameCube as Starfox Adventures. Ah and Animal Crossing I believe.
Animal Crossing was finished and released, but only in Japan.
But yeah, there were a lot that never made it. Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil Zero, and Kirby Air Ride were moved over to the GameCube. Mother 3 (Earthbound 64) was brought over to the GBA. Glover 2 and Carnivale were cancelled outright. 40 Winks and ODT came out on PlayStation, but the N64 ports were cancelled. And the list goes on and on!
Probably a lot considering the N64 wasn't the most third party friendly system.
Animal crossing was only released in Japan for the N64, they did re-release in America for the Gamecube.
