At the sacrifice of some of your doorway I would pull them closer to just get past the edge of the door and the audio rack on the other side. A room like that would probably benefit from DSP.
You can call it an acoustic illusion. I agree. And I understand that a bigger room is better, but the whole point of this experiment is to try and create soundstage in a small room.

you can try the speakers close together even touching each other but point them out 15 to 30°

Soundstage is an illusion and you need all the help so symetrical room with space around speakers to avoid reflections will improve it.
