Fun topic! There is definitely something about high performing budget equipment.
I kind of agree with regards to B&W speakers. Something about their house sound that I'm not a fan of.
The Piega is interesting. The tweeter looks like a Vifa D26NC-15-06 or possibly Peerless BC25SC55-04 square frame 1" tweeter, both of which are great little tweeters despite their low cost. ATC uses the Vifa in their nice SCM12 bookshelf speaker. But you are correct in that they are in general polite sounding, but that does make them good for a lot of different types of music.
One concern about the Piega is that the drivers are not flush mounted. This can lead to problematic edge distortion, especially on the tweeter. I suppose this is less of an issue if they are used as surround speakers, but if you want to keep the Piegas as your main stereo speakers, there is an easy fix. If you buy some decent quality F10 or F3 felt sheets or strips and some double stick tape you can place the felt around the tweeter and it will clean up some of the distortion you might be hearing. Maybe start with 1/2" wide, 1/4" thick strips around the tweeters raised edge and see if it has an effect that you like. The you can experiment with larger or differently shaped pieces. It's cheap and reversible, so there is little to lose. Hope this helps! Cheers!!

NHT 1.5i. Acoustic suspension, angled front baffle like the Piegas, and a wonderful aluminum dome tweeter. And they’re available used for $150-200. They’re what I use in my office as a desktop speaker.

I am very happy with my Mission 700 Leading edge speakers in a 12m2 room. They not called leading edge for no reason. They are pretty tight and precise and have excellent vocal reproduction. I do have a fairly warm system in there with a Sansui 331 receiver and I use a small tube buffer with rolled tubes and op amps. In a more neutral system they might become on on the bright side of things.

You try Bose 301, best bookshelf speaker. All the best!

Bose 301 could be allright for background music in a bar or something, but it's certainly not the best bookshelf speaker. It does not even have a dome tweeter. Would like one again though it has a very specific quality.

Low base can be achieved by placing a sub in your other room.

What about front ported, bookshelf speakers? Would that work in this space?

They probably would be very good here, but I do not have them at the moment.
