Good review, Leon. I’ve had my Coleman for over 20 years. I’m on the first generator, using standard unleaded, but I put a shot of Redex in with the petrol every now and again. It burns hotter when I do, but it de-gunks the system and when finished, burns beautifully.
The control valve operates a jet needle that is indeed on the burner side of the generator.... ya.. i was surprised too. I'd suggest not only pressurizing but a few valve turns after cool down to let some liquid in and clear the jet
Brilliant stoves. I’ve had one since 1996. Only ever had ti buy a new plunger for it. I find it best to use Alkylate fuel. So much cleaner. (Available from most garden machinery shops).
I own a number of Coleman stoves/lanterns. Perhaps there is a difference between U.K. petrol and U.S. gasoline. Here we use regular unleaded. Our premium fuel has additives that will clog, not clean the generator. These generators can be removed and cleaned. Gasoline/petrol is very cost effective but has drawbacks. It burns dirtier then Coleman camp fuel and will soot up your pots clog your generator over time and has more of an odor. Gasoline/benzene will also deteriorate faster then Camp fuel. Camp fuel stored properly has been used as with success after a decade or more. Gasoline/petrol will begin deteriorating in a few months if it contains ethanol as it does in the U.S. Non-ethanol gasoline will be usable for perhaps a year but will likely burn dirtier. I don't understand why one would store the stove pressurized with fuel in it. I would think being left pressurized would create something of a hazzard as vapors could escape under pressure. Also under pressure I would imagine gasoline would possibly oxidize and deteriorate more quickly. Regardless I feel it's best to empty or simply burn of the petrol/gasoline before long term storage. Camp fuel can be left in the stove for perhaps a decade. Petrol/gasoline is economical and easy to obtain. However it does have its drawbacks as stated above. Just my opinion, feel free to disagree.

I just picked up one of these for a two week motorcycle tour, do I have to empty it each morning when I pack up my gear in case it leaks petrol into my luggage or when its pressured up it will stay sealed. Got a Nash bag on order but it will be packed in same bag as my tent etc.
Good Review. If it's cold out put some Alcohol Jell down beneath the Generator Tube. It will help with lighting the Stove. (Pump up the Stove, Light the Jell then Light the Stove.) If you are going to refuel a Stove like this don't use a Blunt opening Bottle. Always use a Cone Bottle, You can buy them in Camping Stores. You spill less fuel. My 533 is sitting on a Shelf next to my Svea 123R.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Coleman 533 stove. The raison why you want to keep the stove pressurized can be to limit the evaporation that may occur each time you depressurize the tank by opening the fuel cap. I want to mention that this stove's valve system is different than propane stoves's valves. It doesnt't control linearly the flow instead it has two positions: In the first or fully open position, only fuel enters the generator. In the "restricted" position, just a fraction of fuel is allowed to pass to the generator while the remaining is just the air from the tank. Therefore if you "simmer" your stove you will use up all the volatile components of your fuel resolting to gumming again even if you keep your tank always pressurized. The etiquette on the tank gives wrong information. To light the stove, the designers considered keeping the valve at restricted position to limit the fuel when the generator is cold. You start from fully open position, in that case your stove may be flooded. I prefere preheating the generator from an external heat source such as a butane torch, in order not to keep this period as short as possible in order not to degrade my fuel.
Auto fuel (petrol/gasoline) will eventually kill these stoves due to varnish deposits and ethanol attacking the fuel system. Try to get ethanol-free unleaded gas/petrol, and mixing 50 ml of white kerosene/paraffin oil and 50 ml of mineral spirits into 5L of fuel will help protect your stove (or you csn use 50 ml of Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam fuel additive... basically the same thing). If you are running gasoline/petrol and won't be using the stove for a month, drain the fuel, pump up some pressure, and open the valve a few times to blow fuel out of the valve and generator so it won't dry out and clog with varnish. If your stove isn't running well, before you replace the generator, run a 5% K1 kerosene/parrafin oil (or Seafoam or Marvel Mystery Oil) to 95% Coleman stove fuel mix through it for 20 minutes, and that will often clean out the buildup of crud and restore functionality. If your use is regular but seasonal, empty the remaining gasoline/petrol out and run a full tank of the 5/95 mix as the last tank of fuel before putting the stove away for the season. And, don't leave it pressurized... that just unnecessarily strains the seals and could cause fuel leaks while the stove is in storage. That will protect your stove. Ethanol in fuel, and letting auto gas/petrol sit in these stoves for any length of time will kill these stoves. These secrets will let you run the stove for decades without needing maintenance.
Thanks for the training I have the Coleman Unleaded 2 Burner Stove bloody there great bit of kit one thing you when pumping the gas put your finger over the hole
Where did you get your stove case from? The new stoves don't come with any type of case at all and I love the case you put your stove in. Ordering my stove today. I plan on using a plastic Folgers can until I find something better.
Do not use premium gasoline! Do not store while pressurized! The pressure will leak out with gas fumes. White gas is the best fuel for these stoves. Unless you are camping for months the savings will not offset the potential health hazards.
Hello, thank you for your review. Some months ago i saw it and decided to buy this stove. I am using Aspen 4 fuel only. It is not really expensive, keeps stove and pot clean and free of soot and my lung free of cancer (hopefully). Has very little smell only when refuelling and almost no smell when running. I would like to add to your review that the pot stand is really flimsy and unsafe. For several times already a pot or pan fell off, so you should have a quick reaction or always keep a hand on it. In my opinion this is not necessary. A ring around the stand would keep the pots from flipping over and also improve the functionality as a wind protection. Does anyone here have experience with this? I would like to make something like this by myself.
I rarely find the Unleaded varian, mostly it's Dual Fuel. Have you tried the 533 Dual Fuel stove using unleaded gasoline? I saw some have problem running those dual fuel using gasoline that they often have to clean and replace their generator. Do you have the same problem if you also use the dual? I suppose this is not the problem using the Unleaded varian?

Good Video wish I'd watched before today. My stove was working fine but I noticed a the Blue flame going orange so tried to pump but is now dose not seem to pump. I turned it off and it would not light again. Opened the faul cap to see if the pump had put any pressure in there. I open it and a small hiss of air came out. I put the cap back on and tried to pump but it will not build up any pressure. 😐 What do you think the issue is?
The reason fuel gums up stoves nowadays is that modern fuel is much lower quality than it used to be, instead of being a more refined, higher quality fuel with a naturally higher octane rating they just add ethanol to lower grade fuel along with a few stabilisers in order to meet octane and emission standards. The problem with it is that the ethanol evaporates out of the fuel and it becomes more like a diesel in the way that its more viscous and harder to ignite, this leads to it gumming up fuel pumps, filters and pipes. The same will be true of premium fuels from pumps although the degradation will be slower, supermarkets are by far the worst for it (there's a good reason why its so cheap) so it's a good idea to stick to the major fuel suppliers such as ESSO, Shell etc. if you think you might be storing the fuel for more than about 6 months.
Hey its a very nice stove but does anyone know what it will run like on mixed 2 stroke petrol, chainsaw mixed petrol for example. You think it would get all blocked up?

I am new to EU, to be honest, the fuel price here was shock me a lot especially chemical product price. In China, the white gas price is way way cheaper than Ireland, which is 23.68€ per BBL base on the currency today ( you know 😂1 BBL = 159 liter ). Well I tried it out in the garage for the first time so I could get used to the stove before I go away the end of the month and it boiled a litre of cold water no problem
Leon, Some fuel manufacturers put the same amount of cleaning additives in all grades. So premium might not be better. This is a complex topic but most of the time "premium" is just higher octane (resistant to detonation) and only benefits high compression engines. But if it works for you then great.

Glad you liking the Vlogs, I use both gas and petroleum in the winter, if I want a quick cuppa I’ll use the gas but for cooking I use petroleum, when you getting frosts at night I change over to using both

Have just bought this stove can't wait to use it thanks for the review and the common sense tips never used one before so fingers crossed lol
Great review! It did not occur to me to use the premium petrol, thank you for that good advice!
Glad it could have been of help to you
Great video - thanks.
Just one question - How did you cook that flat bread please? Cheers - Nice one.
I use a Ridgemonkey Combi pan
@@LEONBARTROPPCARPER Those Ridgemonkeys are a favourite in the Van Dwellers world too... Maybe time I got one - Really appreciate you coming back - Cheers.
Dude, £5 for 5L?!?! Damn, that's expensive, when compared to here! It's usually US$2.50 per GALLON!
Hi Leon just bought Coleman .awsome .cheers
Enjoy it mate, you'll never get another petrol stove again
Hello, thanks for the good review! I'm looking for the nice bag/sleeve you usw for the coleman. Can you tell us the name of the bag or send a link? Thank you very much!
That is an old Nash one
LEON BARTROPP CARPER Thank you very much!
Great vlogs Leon 👏🏻
Been watching for a while now and finding all the hints/tips very helpful, plus entertaining 👍🏻
Back Carping after 20 yrs and throughly enjoying it, but no luck yet (blanking!)
My question; I’m using gas at the moment, but when would the best time to change over to petrol? I’ve heard gas can be unstable when temps drop below freezing.
Glad you liking the Vlogs, I use both gas and petroleum in the winter, if I want a quick cuppa I’ll use the gas but for cooking I use petroleum, when you getting frosts at night I change over to using both
If its cold at night I put the gas bottle in the sleeping bag with me.
Rewatching this in 2023 , fuel aint cheap now lol ! But petrol is still cheaper than buying gas canisters i use my Coleman all year round now .
Gotta love a Coleman

Thanks for the video.. would like to know if it works with benzene ? "cars benzene"
It too sure maybe
@@LEONBARTROPPCARPER I want to try that but not sure if its safe or not
Cracking review once again very informative thanks mate
Glad you liked it
HONEST QUESTION HAS ONE EVER WENT WRONG OR BLEW UP
Probably has
BUT KEEPING IT LEAK FREE NOT OVER FILLED AND DONT OVER HEAT IT THEN IT SHOULD BE OK YES OR IS IT A BAD IDEA TO USE FOR ALITTLE ECO HEAT ??
I WILL BE HONEST MY MAIN CONCERN IS THAT NO FLAMES FLASH BACK INTO THE TANK IT WOULD BE NICE IF THEY HAD A ONE WAY VALVE TO STOP THAN AND THE REST IS COMMON OP SENCE
Have you tried cooking an English breakfast on it?
I have in the past mate
Nice one looks a good stove for the cold days
I quite like it David and has served me well for many years
best thare is had mine years and years two the 533 and the smaller one
The king of stoves!

Glad you liked it Dave, thanks for watching
Had mine for 20 years only ever used unleaded fuel still going strong, got the Tilley lamp to and that’s still going strong .cant get ill in your bivvie as it burns unleaded fuel .
White gas
Naphtha
Coleman fuel
Aspen fuel
Shellite
What ever you call it in your neck of the woods, it's the bee's knees in this thing!
Mine burns kerosene and diesel just fine
Great stuff 👍
@@LEONBARTROPPCARPER I mean it works just fine
Sir can we use petrol for burning in stove i have also this stove gift me my cousin from . LONDEN
Lead free petrol
Great review but this seems so much effort, so much simpler to just use a gas stove. Just screw on the gas bottle, open the valve, light and your away, no pumping, and no big flames when starting up.
I use a gas stove for all my usual fishing but this one for the wihter
Cheaper than gas
Like the black chicken hat leon
Thxs Lee, they are available from my shop at www.leoncarper.com
Coleman good stove
And don't forget about the seals on the stove they can go to dude
Yes very true the washer in the pump goes sometimes
Sound advice Leon.
Thxs Kevin

Had 1 and it leaked on me lucky it never burnt my brolly down wouldn't use petrol stove again. Great vlog otherwise
I hope you took it back to them and changed it as it shouldn’t have done that Stephen
LEON BARTROPP CARPER no mate slung it in the bin when I got home never trusted petrol cookers again
Fair enough
Dont use the fucking thing in a tent or bivvy at all! Ive had coleman stove over 20yrs! Wouldnt dream of using it in enclosed space,,,,,,petrol ffs!!!!!
You need lots of ventilation ie an open door
Good review Leon, shame for my stove I didn't watch it a few years earlier. ! I've been depresurising after use. Won't do with the next generator
It will make a difference Chris, glad you enjoyed the vid
Welcome to carbon monoxide! Get a better sleeping bag. If you die contact the company for a refund!
Heaters are ok if have ventilation
Nice ads.
