I actually just found out that this song was much much bigger in Europe than in America. Here it didn’t really get popular until the movie Loser came out and even then that wasn’t a huge movie at the time. So it kind of makes sense that you have such a connection with the song, given that it was everywhere in Europe and Australia and such.
Music is such a great leveller! One minute you’re happy, next you’re crying. It amazes me how it constantly messes with your emotions. I guess that’s why we remember these special tracks and forget those that don’t!

The back story to this song is that it was influenced by the Ricky Kasso "Acid King" Say You Love Satan murder, which happened in the 1980s in the woods behind his house when the writer was only 10 years old.
Wheatus has another song that talks about the subject more directly and poetically titled "From Listening to Lightning".
That's pretty dark considering how lighthearted this song sounds

yeah dude she has it all wrong. he only ever sings it after the falsetto section and it was always him.
People think this is some kind of throwaway song because the lyrics are (intentionally) cheesy however this is a really good song.

You know he wrote that song about satanic cult murders that happend in his home town. It was a teenage kid who killed his parents and some other people to. When the cops arrested him he was wearing an AC/DC tshirt. It sounds like a happy song, but the song about something dark. I guess the same could be said about "Pumped up Kicks".

So after listening to the vice documentary on this song, the satanic cult murder influenced the word ‘dirtbag’ and the “he brings a gun to a school” lyric. Seems like the rest of the song’s meaning is about his personal experience: wanting love, feeling like an outcast/loser, and sticking it to all the haters in his life like his high school teachers, priests, and any authority figure in his life that didn’t encourage him.
Not really focusing heavily on the negative aspects, more like sprinkling it in the song

I have heard lots of people saying that music takes them to other times of their lives, times where everything was better, simplier, I don't know how to say it, well whatever that means, it just doesn't apply to me, and don't misunderstand me, I love music, I love playing it, if anything, it transpots me to places that I have never been... Hey V, i know you're really love 90's hip hop but do you by any chance listen to 90's Alt-rock such as Third Eye Blind, Vertical Horizon, Splender, The Smashing Pumpkins and there's a lot of 'em that i really like, especially Third Eye Blind, their debut album is really good, So if you have time to react to one of Third Eye Blind's song from their debut album such as "Semi Charmed Life" or "Jumper" or whichever song from them you really like, that would be awesome

For the record, the lead singer sang the bridge in falsetto because that's how it was on the record. The lead singer did all the vocals for the track.
