  • Welcome back to The Game Collection! Today’s video is brought to you today by the supporters of the show over on Patreon, and subscribers on Twitch. Everyone got together and created a list of games they wanted to see a review of, no game was off the table. And then they voted decided which of those games I would review next. The competition was fierce, and included games like Golden Sun, the Tales series, and dozens of others but in the end, one game slowly but steadily rose through the ranks. One game was chosen above all the others. And now, finally, after spending dozens of hours playing through it, I can see exactly why it was chosen. And now it’s time to dig into it! I am SuperDerek, and this is Star Ocean: The Second Story!
Star Ocean: The Second Story was the first Star Ocean game to come to the United States and was, in fact, the way a great many people first experienced this epic series. However as the name would imply this is actually the second entry in the series. Second Story is a follow up the Super Famicom release of Star Ocean, which wasn’t officially localized and published in the west until its PSP re-release: Star Ocean: First Departure… But that’s a story for another day.
The series has an interesting pedigree, with many of its creators having worked on Tales of Phantasia prior. When several team members split from Wolfteam, they formed their own development studio, Tri-Ace, and have been making Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile games ever since. Because of this, you can see the influences in the game as it plays out in a mixture of action RPG and menu-based battle mechanics. However, as the name might imply, this game isn’t exactly your run-of-the-mill medieval fantasy.
The game opens with presenting the player with a choice, you may choose which protagonist the game will follow throughout its duration. This blind choice will affect a few things down the road, such as recruitable characters, which bits of the story the player will be privy to, and the like. The choice is between Claude and Rena, two characters who at a glance are worlds apart. Because Rena has healing magic, I opted for her story. But it didn’t take long before the two were united.
While visiting a forest near her home town, Rena is attacked by a beast! Seemingly from nowhere, Claude intervenes, “sword” flashing. To Rena, he’s a vision of the foretold hero, destined to save the world from calamity. And as luck would have it, there just so happens to be a calamity afflicting the world in the form of the Sorcery Globe, which fell from the sky and is causing all sorts of problems. Claude, oblivious to this apparent destiny and not wanting to be rude and also not really having anywhere else to go, follows Rena into town.
Glossing over many of the smaller details, Claude and Rena end up going on an adventure to investigate the sorcery globe. A task that draws the unsuspecting Claude and Rena into a conflict far more immense than anyone could have imagined.
The whole concept of a foretold hero of light coming to save the world during its time of need is a story as old and tired as storytelling itself. Star Ocean the Second Story turns the trope on its ear though by mixing in a science-fantasy bend and a small dash of “Dances with Wolves”. And with a name like “Star Ocean,” and this amazing cinematic, I don’t think it’s a huge spoiler to say that this game does in fact get quite sci-fi. And when it does, the Second Story truly starts to shine.
Along the way you have the ability to recruit a bunch of characters to join you. There are 12 total playable characters, but only 8 slots in your party including Claude and Rena. Recruiting some characters may prevent you from being able to recruit others, and some characters are completely missable if you aren’t thorough. The game wants you to, no, demands that you to explore it thoroughly if you want to see everything. And it will take several playthroughs to do it. The characters you recruit, the answers you respond to questions with, and the actions you take throughout the game’s duration will determine which combination of endings you will be presented by the end of the game, resulting in something to the tune of a whopping 80 possible endings. That’s right. 80. The Second Story is a massively ambitious game, and it shows in details like this.
I guess what I’m getting at is that if someone ever asks you if there was one JRPG you had to play for the rest of your life, what would it be, you probably wouldn’t ever run out of things to learn and do in The Second Story.

Okay so a quick thing about the STEALING mechanic that my brother and I thought was absolutely amazing Lore-wise. Pay close attention to the ITEMS that a lot of people are holding. Some of them are pretty obviously expected things like the Shopkeeper having Armor or Herbs. Others have items that tell a HUGE story about who held them. That couple at the Hotel that's newlywed? One has a Ring of Happiness. The other? A LIFE INSURANCE POLICY. Its just one of many, many examples just like it throughout the entire game. Every town has several NPCs like this.

You only lose affection ratings if you fail at stealing. Its a pain but if you save everytime you successfully steal and reset if you fail you can raid a whole city without lowering affection. using skills like counterfeit too much result in lower ratings. Thats why i make one of every useful item in counterfeit then duplicate them with a camera. Theres a neat way to get eternal sphere in disc 1 but requires a lot of steps and proper set up. Starting out a new game with protagonist having nimble fingers talent is a must.

This will forever and always be my favorite JRPG. The goofy voices, the AMAZING soundtrack, the menu systems and item creation, and of course the outstanding combat system itself. The combat looking simple at first glance. But once you change the option to not have to press square to freely move and learn about some of the gimmicks and intricacies of the combat mechanics... The battles evolve and become something truly unbelievable for its time.

Star Ocean II was my first real RPG and I don't know if many games have come to the level it hit since. Like I know you raved about private actions in general but there's also scenes during those events that you can miss and add so much to each character. Like Claude dealing with the way Rena and everyone sees him as this legendary hero, when he really knows there's nothing *that* special about his "Sword of Light" - or when Rena runs into Dias and the confusing feelings for everyone involved in that situation. You genuinely get to know and feel for your party as they travel together.

The scene where Clik is completely destroyed not only by an earthquake, but then a subsequent tsunami really left me feeling emotionally drained. (Coincidentally, that exact same event happened on the north eastern coast of Japan in 2011).
I also really loved the PA system. This system also exists in the first game, but it's fleshed out far more in this one. In this one your characters can have events with NPCs, as well as other party members instead of the previous title where it was just between party members.

Hands down, my favorite JRPG of ALL-TIME. Nothing will compare to this game. I literally search for a title that matches the thoughtfulness and care that went into this games story and mechanics in vain. Way ahead of its time. Even the later entries in this same series were missing the charm and effect of The Second Story. I don’t even think a remake would be able to capture what this game held. Definitely a classic!

Then i saw star ocean next to it, and it was a gut feeling i got that told me to get it. I'm so glad i did. My brothers were furious when they didn't see the musashi game 😂. But they are so grateful that i chose it, they also love it and its our best childhood memory. I've also never met anyone that has played this game in person. This is definitely one of the best RPGs of all time. While a lot of the 80 endings are fairly minor differences based on which characters like you the best from your choices in the game, very few games can claim what I feel is one of the coolest features, the protagonist choice at the beginning of the game not just being a skin you pick with a few pronouns changed in the dialog. Whether you pick Claude, you're getting a substantially different experience in terms of not only character perspective, because he is from a high tech society, but also story perspective, and that includes both events and characters that only happen because of who Claude is. And Rena is the same way; the story is remarkably different from her perspective, and her past and acquaintances in the world make a difference in what happens to her, and how she reacts to everything going on. And there are so, so many private actions that you can discover in the game's towns that open up new choices. It's really an incredible game that, in combination with the crafting system and extra dungeons you could dump hundreds of hours into and still be finding things you didn't know were there the last time you played. It's well worth playing regardless of the version. I'd love to see the HD updated version of this make its way over here like Star Ocean: First Departure is.
