I've been buying games and accessories for that, and am tempted to start one of the JRPGs I've picked up for that system since it's something new. But I also want to start up Star Ocean since it's gotten great reviews. I'm torn as to what to do since I have such limited time to play games nowadays (mostly just on weekends).
There are 13 characters and most you can not obtain together. Meaning if you get one character you can not get the other, but there is at least one you have to get before getting another. I love the game and have beaten the two extra bosses and started on second playthrough. One minor complaint though: Character pixel art is a bit off-putting when looking at the backgrounds. Not saying it is bad, but would rather their art look more like Octopath for example. You can easily break the game once you have access to Fun City, auto-attack Survival Mode if you can beat it you will gain 10 levels even above level 200. Other characters will gain about 3+ levels. Can also do the Bloody Armor + 20% heal per attack for immortality, but that was in at least the PSP version.
I dont know if i can say the game is challengeing i didnt cheese the game because i wanted it to be difficult or at least not a cake walk but because of the achivments the random new skills such as body gaurd training etc it made the game SUPER easy because there where so many quality of life improvements even with battle systems it WAS still very fun to do 100% completion run post game dungeon craft everything max all skills etc but the post game dungeon was honestly not a challenge at all i remeber even a few yrs back going into it in the og and some of the mobs just insta killing me i didnt have that issue what so ever here went threw whole dungeon and didnt die once even to celeste which THAT shocked me i didnt feel the difficulty intill i fought limiter removed indalego and queen isebella those where the only 2 that where strong now....with that said people could say well if u utilize the sheild break systems etc that true....well i wanted to keep it as true to the old school as i could so i tryed to not break sheilds and use abiltys that didnt abuse that system...looking at u helmetbreaker... even brute forceing the game just like we used to have to do was drastically easyer my only 1 complaint in this game was a very small one tho earth universe and galaxy are great....but there should of been a chaosmode as well that was 3-4x scaleings for us who enjoy a challenge slog or grind but its def a 10/10 remake the new systems skills etc where fun fast travel made the game feel less painful and slow and spells not slowing the game down was AMAZEING and made celine and leon actually feel like simi decent characters
Bodyguard is completely busted for grinding. It's not a 100% kill rate, but if you're good at dodging the shadows that don't get targeted you can easily kill 20+ of them every couple seconds. This greatly outpaces what you can get with doing 5 chained battles all the time too so I recommend doing this instead of that if you want to level up fast. You can easily get to lvl 80 by the time you reach the halfway point and not too long after that when you're going through the fields you can get to lvl 130+. Honestly as much as I like a challenge I always thought the Second Story was a slog to get through normally, and I welcome the quality of life changes you can partake in with this remake. This honestly makes me appreciate how good the game was for the time and it's great how much better this remake made it as well. Here's hoping for a Xenogears remake in this style. Though I think they need to coordinate with Monolith and Nintendo for that to be good, especially for Disc 2.

I bit queen back then it was near impossible. I would say the game was easier back then . They actually rebalance the game. Mostly the skills mode to progress your skill you had to use 250 times to max it out . this is the epitome of remasters / remakes. many new mechanics are game-changing, even rpg-changing in general every. rpg from now on could borrow many, many features from this, the same way every 3rd person game borrowed the Z-Targeting from Ocarina of Time.
this game was made for breaking it. there's no game like this for you to be extremely powerful like you could be at the endgame, but just into the first 3 hours in the game. the original was already like this, but this remake made the things extremely easier to do if you want and if you know what to do.
I had something like 2k hours into the original. Yes 2k. Multiple play throughs with every team combination. You can not imagine the hype I had when I seen the remake. Now I have been burned badly in the past but when I the demo came out I was only more hyped. Having finished both the main story and all the side quests this past week I can say without any hesitation that they knocked it out of the park. This game is such a perfect update I am frankly stunned. 11/10 can't recommend enough.
I was going to get the physical copy on Switch but I heard that it needs a download for the full game. I may wait until I get a PS5 and play it there, instead
Like Zebliin said, there is no download required, everything is on the cartridge. The only thing you have to download is a small update patch, as is the case with PS5, and an optional language pack if you plan to play the game on a language other than English or Japanese.
Man. This is disappointing. I really do not like the updated backgrounds and art at all. They have a very, very different vibe to them, and the contrast between the new graphics and the original character sprites is jarring. I guess I was hoping for a remaster on modern consoles but they did a remake instead. I think I will pass on this one. Oh well. Good video though.
Fast Travel should just be standard in all games, Remake or not. It makes backtracking so much easier for sidequests and just to allow places you've been to hours ago to still be relevant in the plot without annoying the player. I swear the only reason I don't have this version yet is that I've been pulled in by one too many games this year, but if I can't find it in stores when I have the time/disposable income I can at least grab it on Steam.
Im praying so hard that if this remake does good enough that we may get a radiata stories remake especially with how SO6 had jack and ridley figurines in it.
How about Star Ocean Blue Sphere :) that is the only one that never got localized and if they remake it the same way as this one i will fly out of happiness.

@@tazmanceltic Thanks for the clarification. It definitely looks good. I have only played the original version and that was a great game. It looks like the revision kept all the good parts of the game and improved on the weaknesses like the ridiculous random encounter rate, screen lock every time magic is used, and outdated graphics of the PS1 version.
@@acidwizard6528 dude it's fucking fantastic no shit, I've been glued to it for days straight. The flaws you mention have all been addressed especially the encounter rate as the enemies are all viewable on the overworld map and avoiding them is easy, not that you'd want to because the combat is absolutely fantastic!!
I'm looking forward to this. It was a great game, and it looks like an amazing job done on it. One thing I'm happy about is this will probably get this absolutely banger battle themes more well known. And some of the relaxing, depressing, and/or beautiful themes are equally amazing in the opposite direction.
An excellent strategy, since your back row party members can use any ability in Assault Formation, would be to have Opera set to use Healing Star. That way, you can save her party-wide heal for when you can't conceivably fire off a spell or item due to cooldowns, and you need some solid healing NOW. Saved my butt many times on some of those bosses on Universe difficulty.
healing star max rank seriously out heals any other healing mechanic and yeah it pairs up well with the cheep method for Bloody armor cheese for end game fights.
Universe difficulty was an absolute blast for me. I ended up reaching the final boss with all of my party right around level 100 and it was still a challenging battle that took about 10 tries. With all the ways they offer to gain exp though, I don't really feel like I spent that much time going out of my way to grind.
Its been a long time since I had played Star Ocean 2, and I misremembered where the private action to remove his limiter was. I kept checking Marze Village because I was thinking it was there and I ended up missing it. I played as Rena on my first run, so at some point in the near future I want to go back and play as Claude and this time do all the end game stuff. If it is even possible to win that battle without limiter at level 100 without bloody invincibility I would love to see how it could be done. @@UNGGodYT
Yeah, universe is a bit much at first cause you can die so quick but eventually it feels absolutely perfect. You can kinda of tell what level the game thinks you should be at various points by the level of the characters that join you. Like, you should be in the low to mid 20's when you get Opera, and the mid 30's when you get Dias (with Rena). You need to be about 5 levels higher than "normal" when you're playing on universe and it feels great. Battles are longer and more intense, but you don't feel over or under powered.
Playing universe for my first run through after not playing the game for about 10 years and I’m having a blast! Currently playing the switch version (kids taking up the tv) and the customization has me damn near giddy. I’ll agree that the game is challenging if you don’t REALLY know how the skills work and why you NEED to spend the time tweaking your skill level. The grind is rather pleasant compared to many games lately.
This game is fantastic and a blast to play portable on the Switch. I love getting games like this physical on my Switch seeing as Playstation doesnt care much for Japan these days and is pretty much going all digital soon.
You never been able to break an SO game like you could in this one..not even dead man walking in SO 5. You are literally untouchable. I was sad tho when levantine didnt change the weapon sprite *whoop i meant planeteer. That sword is so cool looking
after playing some amazing rpg blind this year such as mass effect legendary series($15 for 3 games !) ghost of tushima and persona 4 golden and god of war ragnarok. its time to check another rpg. it was going to be between star ocean second story or FF16(not a fan of how far FF16 have stray away from regular FF). 20 hours so far in star ocean 2R, im very impressed and enjoyed it immensely. i liked star ocean 3 alot until the silly mind fuck plot toward end. star ocean 4 was ok and star ocean 5( interegrity faithless) i quit after few hours and divine force looks even worst. i lost my faith in the series until this. never tried the original and i see why ppl really praise it so much now.
fast travel and no random encounters are so much appreciated. This made this game a pleasure everytime i played it! The remastered tracks are pretty good too.
Why didn't they remake the first game this way? Im confused bc there is a star ocean 1 R and both were remastered on psp so i just wish theyd have done both. Hope they update the 3rd game too. Chrono trigger and final fantasy 6 really need this treatment.
Just wanted to point out a few things you got wrong... There are 13 playable characters (welch was added in the remake) Just like you can only get Dias in a Rena play thur, Loen can only be gotten if you choose Claude... 😅
It may be the best Remake i have ever played. There is litteraly nothing bad i can say about it. But even a perfect Remake can not save a Game with such a weak Story.
Just purchased this yesterday, and man you've gotten me super hyped, more than any other reviewer. I thought I'd like it, but given all the info here, it seems that I'll love every second of it. Great tips without spoiling anything.
Welp, I already had planned on buying this game but your review sold me 1000%. This remake should be the absolute foundation for all PS1 remakes in the future. I know I’m speaking miracles but what a day that would be if Xenogears and Legend of Dragoon got this treatment!!
I finished this game twice already and platinumed it. I have MANY more playthroughs to go since I want all 99 endings, but I had an absolute blast playing it!
Star ocean 2 was and still is my all-time favorite jrpg and the only that really got me loving the genre, i even did a Pickpocket all NPC run at one point. Loved the demo but will be a while before i get the remake since where i live every game needs to be shipped but will eventually get this game again.
The lighting is beautiful and spot on in Star Ocean. Great game, I am playing the demo right now. I enjoy it more than I did Sea of Stars( which also is entertaining). Keep em coming, Erick. I love grinding and i love your show
80% through on Universe blind and it's not perfect. Very disappointed that they use the same bgm for almost every scene or dungeon. Some dungeon themes don't even fit imo just like the starter theme in SO6. No run toggle but they added it for SO1R. No manual mode. Cutscenes are now just a simple in game shot and not complex like in SO2 original. They removed the iconic Star Ocean sounds. Just a few observations but I still give the game a solid 8/10.
I hate the Translation bit. Japanese dialog voice is saying (Cloud-San), but in English Translation it is (Mr. Kenny). There many scenes where the bad Translation is actually even more horrible. All the wait for the game to be (Remaster) and the end result is such bad job. I wasted my money on wrong game. 😨
this game is anything but hard!! .... wtf! you lvl up so damn fast! most chars are OP AF. the only grind in the game is when you want lvl 255 everything else just happens without doing anything you can actually just run around without figithing and get exp with bodyguard!! the only hard thing are these new raid bosses! but that is the reason why they are their.
al buy remaster once the game price drop ,becuase i already have the old version for discount for 114 yen star ocean second evolution ps4 japan account 7 years back but one thing i want to know if star ocean second evolution old jp ps4 version has the sunrise ring mmmm. before i buy this game but i wanna play the old version to find that sunrise ring before remaster .
I have never given a JRPG a true chance. I will give this game my heart and so far 3 hours in I have say I like it so far and I'm very interested on how it progress.
i finished star ocean first departure earlier this month and then just finished second story r i loved both of these games so much. but damn if second story r isnt a masterpiece truly enjoyed my time with it and didn't want it to end!
Just platinumed it(thank god they didn’t make you get all 99 endings for a trophy😅) loved every second of it, the quality of life additions just made it so much easier to enjoy. Loved the original on ps1 although I never finished it after the difficulty spike mid game

after playing some amazing rpg blind this year such as mass effect legendary series($15 for 3 games !) ghost of tushima and persona 4 golden and god of war ragnarok. its time to check another rpg. it was going to be between star ocean second story or FF16(not a fan of how far FF16 have stray away from regular FF).
Does anyone know what the recommended level for the endgame is? I saw some places online saying a minimum of level 100. Is that true?
You mentioned Dias being exclusive to Rena's scenario but forgot to mention Leon is exclusive to Claude's.
So fixing that for you!
I like the graphics but the gameplay is not for me. Mindless, chaotic, button masher. Every battle looks like auto is on.
There are 13 playable characters (welch was added in the remake)
Just like you can only get Dias in a Rena play thur, Loen can only be gotten if you choose Claude... 😅
It may be the best Remake i have ever played. There is litteraly nothing bad i can say about it.
But even a perfect Remake can not save a Game with such a weak Story.
after decades of telling rpg fans about this title, i am vindicated.
Just purchased this yesterday, and man you've gotten me super hyped, more than any other reviewer. I thought I'd like it, but given all the info here, it seems that I'll love every second of it. Great tips without spoiling anything.
I just finished it and man it was so good lol 😂 when I got done I was just like that’s my new favorite video game ever.
If there is ever a way to turn off voice acting I will buy this game. The voices are atrocious
got a good run in my playthrough, but I want Opera.
...and I forgot the 3 eyed man...
so I gotta start fresh...
Bummer, am ~10h in...
Welp the source material is like super good to begin with 😎
I need Xenogears remake
Welp, I already had planned on buying this game but your review sold me 1000%.
This remake should be the absolute foundation for all PS1 remakes in the future.
I know I’m speaking miracles but what a day that would be if Xenogears and Legend of Dragoon got this treatment!!
I finished this game twice already and platinumed it. I have MANY more playthroughs to go since I want all 99 endings, but I had an absolute blast playing it!
damn bro chill out
I would love to see a new star ocean made with these graphics
Thanks for discussing the little things that most other reviewers don’t talk about. Subbed
Star ocean 2 was and still is my all-time favorite jrpg and the only that really got me loving the genre, i even did a Pickpocket all NPC run at one point. Loved the demo but will be a while before i get the remake since where i live every game needs to be shipped but will eventually get this game again.
This is the greatest 2d jrpg revision let I hope they continue to make more
They didn't even redraw the sprites. They just took the original pixelated sprites..
Once you get to autolevelling, the game just ended grinding as RPGs ever need to be built again.
bruh i hope they bring blue sphere out in the same style as this!
I'm glad to hear that a classic game is made even better
There’s 13 characters not 12, you forgot welch.
Btw DO NOT watch the anime. You have been warned.
The lighting is beautiful and spot on in Star Ocean. Great game, I am playing the demo right now. I enjoy it more than I did Sea of Stars( which also is entertaining). Keep em coming, Erick. I love grinding and i love your show
This is how you remake an old classic without touching the story and when adding all these assets who make the game so much more enjoyable !
see this mistake on almost every SO2R video: this game is not HD-2D, it's 2.5D.
I actually like Leon’s English VA. Welch on the other hand… yikes.
I actually agree with what you mentioned for s brief moment. I think this version will be a lot harder for new comers, but much easier for veterans.
this game is anything but hard!! .... wtf! you lvl up so damn fast! most chars are OP AF.
the only grind in the game is when you want lvl 255 everything else just happens without doing anything
you can actually just run around without figithing and get exp with bodyguard!!
the only hard thing are these new raid bosses! but that is the reason why they are their.
never played SO before, and buy this one blindly - brake the game after one hour of grinding the sacred forest. 10/10
I rrmember playing the original I was addicted. The game eas so mu fun and I look at this and God look even better.
al buy remaster once the game price drop ,becuase i already have the old version for discount for 114 yen star ocean second evolution ps4 japan account 7 years back but one thing i want to know if star ocean second evolution old jp ps4 version has the sunrise ring mmmm. before i buy this game but i wanna play the old version to find that sunrise ring before remaster .
I have never given a JRPG a true chance. I will give this game my heart and so far 3 hours in I have say I like it so far and I'm very interested on how it progress.
Truly ❤ the remake I’m 19 hours into it! I played the original and spent a lot of time just crafting !
i finished star ocean first departure earlier this month and then just finished second story r
i loved both of these games so much. but damn if second story r isnt a masterpiece
truly enjoyed my time with it and didn't want it to end!
I just got a copy for Christmas. I loved the original ps1. Can’t wait to play this
Your review is the only review on this game I’ve been waiting for!!!!!!
10:00 perfect. The remake is harder just because of bullet sponge design? Now I am not sure if I should get the game this year.
This game has a such a special soundtrack. Glad it's getting the attention its always deserved.
Every true fan remembers renaming Crawd to Crap at least once while snickering.
10/10
This game wasn't crazy hard. Even though I did die a lot
Thanks dude for your amazing review 😊 this game is awesome and masterpiece
Too many quality of life features in the game can take away what made the original loved so much.
The English voice acting is so bad I nearly quit the game
Like!
i played original and this remake captures the same magic that was in the original. it's great!
Glad I got the hard copy ps5 disc.
i dropped it, battles seemed hectic and manic... hhmm maybe try again one day
You are right im one of the peps that didn’t knew what the story was about hee ho (:3
Just platinumed it(thank god they didn’t make you get all 99 endings for a trophy😅) loved every second of it, the quality of life additions just made it so much easier to enjoy. Loved the original on ps1 although I never finished it after the difficulty spike mid game
Having to do all 99 endings would *suck* lol
The quality of life features made me like the game a whole lot more than before.
Very nice game, but one of the worse stories ever written by human hand
Not even close lmao, have you ever read fan fiction? The story is not the best, but it ain't bad either.
Sounds like you don't watch/read/play/listen to many stories.
@@killerb255 al contrario. La storia di SO2 ha enormi problemi strutturali, drammaturgici e di logica. Da metà avventura in poi il gioco inizia a delirare con cose nonsense da facepalm.
ups sorry, didnt mean to write in italian haha
There are 13, not 12 characters, tho there are 2 that are exclusive to each route
Hands down the best remake I've ever played.
the character pixel art could have used an upgrade.
My guy should be at 100k.
