Ann Cee so I didn’t watch this video nearly 100x, but I really didn’t have to. Driving the car off the lot and getting it home was no problem, but Day-to-day travel and the inner city stuff was really a struggle. Navigating traffic for the first few days can be nerve-wracking. Gain as much knowledge as you can, but what will help tremendously is obv just getting to an open space and getting a feel for your car and the gears will be the best thing. I’ve now driven a number of different manual cars with no trouble.

I remember when I first drove a standard by myself was in my dad and stepmom's old Subaru Impreza to go to McDonald's (I worked there at the time) and I took the long way there as I wanted to avoid the hills (they're super small hills. Barely hills actually). Didn't stall the car but did on the way back home. That was 4 years ago and I have my own car now that's standard and I've driven it in stop and go traffic uphill (on a huge hill. Probably the biggest hill in the city honestly). It was scary and frustrating at first but so worth it. I'll never go back to driving an automatic.

+Cole Duvall One thing I do is push in the clutch + pop it in neutral when stopping. You can brake as quickly as you want (but be very mindful of who's behind you, very important) but make sure you hold in the clutch the entire time, or make sure the gearbox is in neutral when stopping.
One other thing, having the clutch pushed in, its the same thing as having the stick in neutral; power from the engine is not being transferred to the wheels. If you stop with it in gear and don't put it in neutral (or hold in the clutch) it will stall the engine; it puts too much stress on the engine for it to keep running.

Pushing the clutch is like putting your car in neutral. It allows your car to break or change gears smoothly, if you don't you are practically going against the grain and will destroy your vehicle. Typically just push down the clutch.. and break like you would on a normal car

    • @everclara2061
      @everclara2061 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Just noticed someone already mentioned it. Also: You will need to start from 0 Speed back up, so putting your stick in neutral should also be a normal thing for you. You'll need to bring your stick down to 1 and restart the manual game anyways.

Don't worry about what gear you are in or even touching the shifter, just stay on the brake and clutch so you stop without stalling!
Your focus should be pressing the brake AND clutch while EYES STAY FORWARD.
Once the danger has passed, whatever it may be, you can shift back into neutral or first.

Great little video thanks. In Australia, we have a very high % of drivers that prefer and drive what we call "manual cars", what you call stick shift. For other viewers, no its not hard as the video shows. The key is to slowly release the clutch, not quickly. After a few hours practice, in a safe empty parking lot etc, you'll get the hang of it. Then you'll never go back to auto since manual gives you that feel that finally you're in control of your car. Thanks!

    • @vinyldash2333

No, you'll never go back to automatic because you'll slam the brakes the first time you go to shift because there's no clutch.

It might be a good idea to mention that you want to slowly engage the clutch because too much shaking that you might feel will stall the car. My friend was just teaching me how to drive stick and said to pay attention to vibrations starting to happen and to limit these vibrations to avoid stalling.

Brody Alquist bro stick is simple I’ll say it in a simpler way. 10 mins right? You spend 5 mins practicing and figuring out the biting point of the clutch, as soon as you get first gear down the remaining 5 minutes can be spent in the rest of the gears which is pretty self explanatory if you got 1st down. Get it? Down shifting comes later just learn the basics of first gear and you’ll be good!!

Thank you for this helpful video. I needed a refresher because I haven't driven a stick in 30+ years. I had a Toyota Celica 5-speed in the late '80's but then became a mom and did the responsible thing for a lot of years. Now I'm "shifting gears" from an older Tahoe and want to something FUN to drive again. After watching this, I feel the skill of driving a stick will come right back, and I won't make a fool of myself at the dealership.

I learned how to drive a stick in 1 day maybe about 2 hours it took me, the best advice the guy who taught me was "listen to the motor" it was a 1999 dodge Dakota n it was all I needed to do. I stalled a couple times at first of course but after each stall I figured out what I did wrong and how the motor sounded with my mistakes. Listen to the motor n u don't even need RPMs or MPH u know exactly how fast or slow your going

I learned to drive stick in a friend's '94 BMW M3 which had a hard clutch to shift. He was impressed once I figured out how to get it out of first gear on the second day and said if you can do it in this you can drive anything. He was right. I haven't done too much downshifting and taking off from a steep hill, but can do everything else in a manual knowing when to shift when the RPMs around 3000. It's fun to drive once you get the hang of it. I want to get my dream car which is the Camaro 6-speed manual, so I'mma finish polishing my stick shift skills before buying it.

I learned driving manual at 16. Before that my mom had already thought me an automatic transmission and I though it was a piece of cake but then my dad was like, “that’s too easy, let me teach you something a bit more challenging”. At my first lesson I stalled the car like 6 times until my father told me “it’s enough for today”. The second time to my surprise, I didn’t stall the car not once for around 40 minutes of driving and parking. Moral of story, don’t give up just because you think it’s hard at first.

Took me lots of screaming and frustration and panicking when I would stall at a stop sign with cars honking at me, this was with no driving experience/classes whatsoever. If you’ve read this far and you’re learning or planing to learn how to drive stick; YOU GOT THIS. Once you learn its fun and you feel so great. It is not impossible and don’t overthink it. And remember that everyone who knows how to drive stick had been in the same position before
