I was a self-taught drummer in my younger days. I haven't played in years. I'm 71 years old now and I bought a drum kit and I saw your finger exercises. The left-hand pinky exercise was sad due to arthritis. But as difficult as this was, it caused me to see how much work it will take to even become a mediocre drummer. But I'm sure that with practice and hard work I can learn to play again. Thanks for showing me where I need to concentrate my focus. Any tips would be appreciated.
My finger technique is terrible, this is the absolute best video I have accidentally stumbled across. I wish I'd see this 3 years ago when I started playing. Thank you.
Love the no frills, no backwards baseball cap, style here. These are the exact technique lessons my teacher taught me years ago. I was looking for a good refresher. Found it. Subscribed.

Been trying to get confident playing metal faster and I’ve never seen such a great break down of the finger techniques, also didn’t expect adding the pinky in. Thank you for making this video!
Thank you! This instruction is what finally made me understand (and feel, which is the most improtant) the reason why my left hand was unable to even get close to the right hand ability when doing 3 or 4 consecuituve note patterns in the first page of stick control. I have been trying to address this for some weeks now, and now I have a clear path for practice. Will keep focusing on these excercises. Can’t express how much I appreciate this! I laughed out loud when you said some drummers have to switch to French grip to play finger technique, that is EXACTLY what I’ve been doing! Time to practice this for the next 10 years 🙏
Thank you for this. I realized I was practicing control and rudiments in French grip and then when I actually wanna play, I play American grip. Now I can change it.
I wish this was available 42 years ago. One of my past drum tutors is a brother of one the world's top drummers. I never had these techniques explained as well as you have here. Your teaching here, is absolutely foundational to proper control and speed. You're outstanding !

I confess that as a drummer of several decades, my first instinct was that I *didn't* like the cold clinical approach of this video. Some of this utility comes through in watching you accidentally click your sticks. There's no (little?) editing being done to clean things up; it's a *practical* lesson. There's a ton of detail about how to practice, both in what is presented intentionally and some in what's not. Kudos! This is super helpful.

It will go back to the creme color when new. Mine is a second hand, from the year 2000. Lately I did what I recommended you and looks in great condition. 👍🏻
I have had lessons from a city orchestra percussion leader, another guy that only put me on stick control on snare, only. I lost interest in him, I was 11. Lessons from a decent teacher from a music store, and also from a multiplatinum celebrity drummer, and maybe someone I am spacing out, then I worked in a music store with a daily visit from various pro's that would hang out, do clinics, and many drummers on a daily basis, still it was this video that finally showed and explained this technique and how to practice it. Great lesson, thank you.
Seriously, in just the first 3 minutes I found out what they have not mentioned in other tutorials. Its all about the thumb roll snap back. The other tutorials just say let it snap back, Im thinking, "well it doesn't". So you show that it takes the additional action of the thumb roll back I think will be a game changer for the technique. I really do appreciate this video!!!!!
Thanks for watching, James. The panels are from a company called Felt Right. They're super easy to use, just peel and stick. They come in lots of colors and sizes too.
Thanks for the drum lesson I've been playing since the '70s and took a break for like 25 years working on the road doing sound and then now I'm getting back into it in my early '60s and this is a technique I only remember from timpani in school but you made it a lot more simpler which that makes it great so more speed more control thanks I just ran across your channel a few months ago really enjoy the in-depth teaching thank you very much
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain finger control. Many people basically just tell ya to use your fingers off of the rebound... These exercises should definitely help my weak hand! Thanks!
Your lesson is spot on! You explained every challenge there is to developing finger technique and how to remedy it. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you!

I’ve watched so many videos trying to figure out how to play double and triple strokes and all these other teachers just say “use your fingers”, “watch my fingers”, “just use finger technique”. THANK YOU for actually explaining how this magical unicorn technique is used❤❤❤
Thank you so much for this video. Was struggling past couple months with getting my left and right hand equal after some time off drums. Realised it was mainly my fingers on my left hand. tried mainly different left leading patterns and playing chains of quavers and semi quavers on it. After a single session can already feel improvement. Could barely hold the stick steady in my left hand with just the index and pinky finger. left hand starting to feel natural again.
Oh my goodness, this is a great class! 😃 I'm a complete beginner... only 3 days into learning! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Fantastic video. ❤
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
I’ve watched so many videos trying to figure out how to play double and triple strokes and all these other teachers just say “use your fingers”, “watch my fingers”, “just use finger technique”. THANK YOU for actually explaining how this magical unicorn technique is used❤❤❤
Lady, that was excellent instruction all the way through.
So wonderful video with full of tricks and tips., amazing 🙏🙏🙏
Very good instruction and demonstration- Thank you
🎉thank you for the most concise demonstration I have seen!
I will practice this a lot because I haven't figured out how to keep my hand from traveling up the stick; my guess is I'm not holding the thumb/finger pivot point secure enough.
Thank you so much for uploading this, i have a lot to fix in the foundations of my drumming and this is so helpful
