I've been playing this game frequently since day 1, and the amount of areas this review showed off that I hadn't seen before are a testament to this game's size. It truly brought back everything I loved about the series.

Nahh, 64 will always be remembered as the game that kickstarted 3D, not just as a brilliant game. 64 is important to gaming culture as a whole while Odyssey is just a great game, nothing more.

It's pretty nice that Mario Odyssey doesn't kick you out of the world after collecting each moon like most other 3D Mario games did. Almost like another game....

Donovan Howes there was really not reason for SM64 since when you collect 100 coins and grab the star, it doesnt kick you out of the level, but with every other star it does.

My favorite Mario game is still Super Mario World, closely followed by Super Mario Galaxy. Even though Odyssey gsts so many things right, I think the game is too easy.
Mario games are never meant to be difficult (with the exception of Lost Levels), but I couldn't help but feel like Odyssey's difficulty curve is virtually nonexistent. Because of how many Power Moons there are, you can complete the game without ever overcoming any of the more challenging ones, and I think that makes the journey somewhat unfulfilling.
Obviously those challenging Moons do exist and anybody can go for them if they so please, but for the player who just likes to go to the next level as soon as they can, Odyssey offers next to no challenge throughout the game. To put it in perspective, one of the Power Moons is obtained simply by kicking a rock around. That's it. No platforming or knowledge of platforming is required to obtain it. You are not even required to JUMP, in a MARIO GAME. This isn't every Power Moon, but it does describe too large of a chunk of them to ignore.
Super Mario 64 and Galaxy I think had much better feeling difficulty curves. Whether the stars get harder to find, the level design gets more hectic, or the boss fights become more difficult, these games never asked you to be great at the game, just competent, so they make the game accessible to the largest audience possible while still making each individual Star feel more earned and more valuable.
I still adore Super Mario Odyssey from a gameplay purist point of view. Possessing enemies and collecting coins for the wardrobe is unbelievably enjoyable, and the visuals and music are top notch. I just wish it was more of a challenge.

Its still mind blowing to me that Kate Higgins (Another voice actress veteran who is well known to be *Sakura Haruno from Naruto, Tails from the Sonic Colors-Lost World, Sailor Mercury from the re-dub of Sailor and more* got the opportunity to sing the best theme song of 2017 "Jump Up Super Star". Seriously that theme song never get tiring. As for this review, it had me laughing Johnny, thanks for making my Saturday better.

Dude, if Sonic Team restructures the 3D games the way they did with the 2D games... That would be amazing. I'm sure a lot of people noticed that Mania didn't come out nowhere! It was built with a lot of familiarizing themselves with the engines and design choices they would eventually use-- you know, by essentially rebuilding Sonic 1, Sonic CD, and Sonic 2.
Imagine they did that with the Sonic Adventure games, eventually leading up to a new 3D game!

This game was a masterpiece. It may be the best Mario game I've ever played. It just does everything I wanted a mario game to do. They stopped booting players out of levels, they make collecting everything fun and rewarding and you're treated to an incredible amount of fanservice. It might be a bit of a pain to collect everything but it's one of the only games in recent years that I actually remember wanting to collect everything.

You know, like johnny, I feel like I'm a bigger fan of Sonic in general compared to Mario. But, I just feel like the Mario franchise and the designers over at Nintendo have just been consistently much better over the years compared to Sonic's. Especially after things like 06, Boom, Genesis, and after playing Odyssey, I gotta say that I think I enjoy Mario games better in general now. After playing Sonic forces, this really sealed the deal for me. The game isn't bad by any stretch, but compared to the Odyssey, it's not even close.
Sonic Forces left a bad impression. Not a bad game, but it was just too easy and too short.
But I could say that the graphics and lighting were much better and more realistic than Odyssey's.
I'm not an Sonic fan personally. But even I will admit that I feel sorry for the blue dude that could've made an 3D Sonic game so much more improvements compared to what Mario has. If it wasn't for Mania ( Plus ) that came out years after the devastating & shameful Sonic Boom games, Forces probably would've made the Sonic franchise been back at an dark era like it was between 2005-2009 & I would've given up on supporting Sonic.

I'd like to take this opportunity to inform you guys about a fact that will result in very complicated reactions and feelings depends on person:
In the past years, some of the staff from Sonic Unleashed/Generations actually move to Nintendo contributing widely acclaimed games include BotW, Galaxy 2, MK8 deluxe, Odyssey. Most of them are field artist and programmers.

While Sonic Team somehow thought that getting a bunch of newbies and an director of an average Sonic to make one of their most 'ambitious' game was an good idea. Reminds, of the time when Sega rejected Sony and they went off to make the PS1.
You know, I have a feeling that Sega cares about their non-Sonic IPs more than Sonic this year. This becomes more apparent when almost every games that Sega involved did so well this year including Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, Total War Warhammer 2, Endless Space 2, Etrian Odyssey V and especially Persona 5, which won best RPG during game awards. Not to mention that Sega released their proposal 'Road to 2020' this year, specifically mentioned about revival of major IPs (segabits.com/blog/2017/05/15/sega-plans-revival-of-major-ips-on-its-road-to-2020/) as well as Sega Forever, a service that port Sega console games to mobile and potentially other platforms. This year, they announced a new Fist of the North Star game (a franchise that has been left for dead since 2007) made by the team behind the Yakuza series and Valkyria Chronicles 4 (my most anticipated game of 2018), which has been in a coma since 2011 only to be disappointed by Valkyria Revolution. Finally, the giant bombshell that was dropped during game awards: A new Bayonetta game published by Nintendo under Sega's license.
Sega are caring less and less about Sonic and it really shows, at least their still making good games. But Sonic Team really need to step up their game otherwise I can't see this franchise lasting any longer. Oh, and I'm thinking of giving the Valkyria series a try, seems really good.
To a certain extend, it kinda makes sense that they focus more on non-Sonic IPs in the following years. I mean how many Sega IPs became dead or went into coma just because they prioritized Sonic in the past 15 years? Nights, Jet Set Radio, Samba de Amigo, Billy Hatcher, Phantasy Star, Ristar, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5, Shenmue...the list just goes on.
I would actually suggest that Sonic Team should merge with CS2 R&D department which known for games like puyo puyo, Rhythm Thief and post 2009 Sonic games. But this time, they will not have the rights to develop Sonic games. Instead, they will focus on reviving Sonic Team's non-Sonic IPs such as Nights and Samba de Amigo. While the Mania Team form a Sega subdivision called something like 'Retro Sonic Team' and make Genesis style 2D games. As for modern 3D Sonic, since a portion of Nintendo consists of former Sonic Team members, I don't think it's unrealistic to have Nintendo own rights to develop 3D Sonic games.
As for the Valkyria series, here's how I rank the games: 3>1>2

While I'm not exactly sure whether or not if I like this game more than Galaxy 1 & 2, I can definitely say Odyssey is one of the best Mario games that we had in quite a long time. Since Galaxy 2 more precise. And one of the best games on the Switch & one of the best games out there. The game may not be perfect. But I still think Odyssey is an fantastic game & definitely superior than 64. I adore this game.

Best. Game. Of. 2017 in my opinion. Mario's always doing new thinfs, sprinkled with some old things. Glad I got the Switch day 1, it was worth the wait for Odyssey. Can't wait for the future of the Mario series

EsteBanano300 i'm not a Zelda fan so of course I'm gonna call SMO the best game of 2017. It's already sold 9 million copies in just 3 months. BOTW is nearing 8 million in 10 months.
BotW is good, but there's something about the game that kinda threw me off & I don't consider it to the best game of 2017. Odyssey; while it may not be the best 2017 game, is an much experience fame than BotW is & I like Odyssey more.
I was a little skeptical about this game when I first saw it but I freaking loved it! This game is so well designed that I was more surprised if there WASN'T a secret hiding around a corner. I hated how Mario felt to control at first but I grew to become expert-like with it. I'm not going to bother 100% it either, I stopped after getting around 720 moons and beating darker side. Great review! I almost forgot about your "moray eel" gag.

If I could recommend something though, try to hit the 500 moons in Odyssey. It gives you a last reward and it's glorious in my opinion. You'll be missing out a part of the game without it.

Hey Johnny, you forgot mention that Odysssey has 5 save files. Going Options, Data Management and choose save/load and you can see 5 files.
Also Johnny... WHY U DIDN'T SHOW N64 COSTUME?! When i beat game and saw it in shop (in Mushroom Kingdom, you need beat game first to get it), i realized that you didn't show it in your review! SERIOUSLY, YOU HAD ONE JOB!
Also not mentioning that "boxers" costume costs 1k coins
