Nahh, 64 will always be remembered as the game that kickstarted 3D, not just as a brilliant game. 64 is important to gaming culture as a whole while Odyssey is just a great game, nothing more.
Name Same reason why Ocarina of Time remains so iconic. Aonuma has been trying all his career to top that game and even Breath of the Wild may fail to do so.
I've been playing this game frequently since day 1, and the amount of areas this review showed off that I hadn't seen before are a testament to this game's size. It truly brought back everything I loved about the series.
Sean Wilson That brings up an interesting question. IS Mario a human? Luigi? Peach? Pauline? Are the humans that we see here the true outliers, aliens from another dimension seeking refuge from their own overpopulated dimension? But they do look terrible amongst Mario and crew so that's probably why they stick out.
It's pretty nice that Mario Odyssey doesn't kick you out of the world after collecting each moon like most other 3D Mario games did. Almost like another game.... I'm referring to Banjo-kazooie
ocarinaplaya Considering the sheer number of Power Moons there are, getting warped back to the Odyssey and having to trek back every time you grabbed one would be a serious pace-breaker.
Donovan Howes there was really not reason for SM64 since when you collect 100 coins and grab the star, it doesnt kick you out of the level, but with every other star it does.
My favorite Mario game is still Super Mario World, closely followed by Super Mario Galaxy. Even though Odyssey gsts so many things right, I think the game is too easy. Mario games are never meant to be difficult (with the exception of Lost Levels), but I couldn't help but feel like Odyssey's difficulty curve is virtually nonexistent. Because of how many Power Moons there are, you can complete the game without ever overcoming any of the more challenging ones, and I think that makes the journey somewhat unfulfilling. Obviously those challenging Moons do exist and anybody can go for them if they so please, but for the player who just likes to go to the next level as soon as they can, Odyssey offers next to no challenge throughout the game. To put it in perspective, one of the Power Moons is obtained simply by kicking a rock around. That's it. No platforming or knowledge of platforming is required to obtain it. You are not even required to JUMP, in a MARIO GAME. This isn't every Power Moon, but it does describe too large of a chunk of them to ignore. Super Mario 64 and Galaxy I think had much better feeling difficulty curves. Whether the stars get harder to find, the level design gets more hectic, or the boss fights become more difficult, these games never asked you to be great at the game, just competent, so they make the game accessible to the largest audience possible while still making each individual Star feel more earned and more valuable. I still adore Super Mario Odyssey from a gameplay purist point of view. Possessing enemies and collecting coins for the wardrobe is unbelievably enjoyable, and the visuals and music are top notch. I just wish it was more of a challenge.
Mario continues to innovate and bring happiness to millions if not billions of people while Sonic keeps producing abominations like Sonic Boom Rise of Lyrac or mediocre media like Sonic Lost World. Sonic's rise and fall since the 90s is one of the most embarrassing stories in all of gaming.
Its still mind blowing to me that Kate Higgins (Another voice actress veteran who is well known to be *Sakura Haruno from Naruto, Tails from the Sonic Colors-Lost World, Sailor Mercury from the re-dub of Sailor and more* got the opportunity to sing the best theme song of 2017 "Jump Up Super Star". *Sonic (1991-2008) = Dreamworks For real though, I'm pretty sure everyone hates Bubsy, so Sony Animation doesn't fit there since they've made some stuff that people love.

Dude, if Sonic Team restructures the 3D games the way they did with the 2D games... That would be amazing. I'm sure a lot of people noticed that Mania didn't come out nowhere! It was built with a lot of familiarizing themselves with the engines and design choices they would eventually use-- you know, by essentially rebuilding Sonic 1, Sonic CD, and Sonic 2. Imagine they did that with the Sonic Adventure games, eventually leading up to a new 3D game! bruh
This was the first 3D Mario game I played and beat. The only other was 64 and I didn’t make it far. But my god it was amazing and I’m itching to replay it again now just from this video.
You know, like johnny, I feel like I'm a bigger fan of Sonic in general compared to Mario. I was a little skeptical about this game when I first saw it but I freaking loved it! This game is so well designed that I was more surprised if there WASN'T a secret hiding around a corner. I hated how Mario felt to control at first but I grew to become expert-like with it. I'm not going to bother 100% it either, I stopped after getting around 720 moons and beating darker side. Great review! I almost forgot about your "moray eel" gag.
This game hit me in all the right spots when it came out. It just felt like such a breath of fresh air after the Wii U era. I 100% about a month after it came out
Great review Johnny, looking forward to see what you think of Cuphead and Hat in Time. If I could recommend something though, try to hit the 500 moons in Odyssey. It gives you a last reward and it's glorious in my opinion. You'll be missing out a part of the game without it.
The other day was Mr. Iwata’s Birthday on December 6th, But we wish that he could see his greatful success. Happy Birthday Mr. Iwata, and Super Mario Odyssey is really fun.
Best. Game. Of. 2017 in my opinion. Mario's always doing new thinfs, sprinkled with some old things. Glad I got the Switch day 1, it was worth the wait for Odyssey. Can't wait for the future of the Mario series
EsteBanano300 i'm not a Zelda fan so of course I'm gonna call SMO the best game of 2017. It's already sold 9 million copies in just 3 months. BOTW is nearing 8 million in 10 months.
BotW is good, but there's something about the game that kinda threw me off & I don't consider it to the best game of 2017. Odyssey; while it may not be the best 2017 game, is an much experience fame than BotW is & I like Odyssey more.
6:33 Small correction; it actually does matter what Power Moons you get up until the after game. The quota only applies to the current kingdom you're in. You don't have to complete the main quest missions, mind you, but you still have to explore enough of that world to meet the quota.
Me:*opens up the TH-cam app* alright time to watch some TH-cam. *Random video starts* Me:Oh come on I just wanted to-*sees it's a Johnny video* oh *starts singing along with theme song as loudly as possible*
Also Johnny... WHY U DIDN'T SHOW N64 COSTUME?! When i beat game and saw it in shop (in Mushroom Kingdom, you need beat game first to get it), i realized that you didn't show it in your review! SERIOUSLY, YOU HAD ONE JOB! Also not mentioning that "boxers" costume costs 1k coins
John, you look like you had SO MUCH FUN with this review XD More power to you, man! Also, you mentioned feeling burnt out after Sonic Forces and Bubsy, and you just said you're going into Cuphead... The fires have been stoked.
Johnny, you should go for 500 moons and tackle the challenge that lies beyond it. Considering your previous endeavors with post-game content I'm thinking that should be a fun time for you. :)
It's a reference to her animation in the Donkey Kong arcade game. Metro Kingdom is literally full of nothing but Donkey Kong references and easter eggs that it's easily the highlight of the game (for me, at least)

When Mario floated away with that bye-bye, I expected an edit of Johnny floating off the screen in a similar fashion. It's a beautiful thought
I knew the Unagi joke was coming a mile away XD
From 120 to 880.
Now that's a big change.
760 more to be exact.
Like, think about if Pokémon had added 8 times as many as there were before after the first game.
Think if we went from 151 to what we have today.
Well, you need 120 to get to the Final Boss in Odyssey so theres that :P
You need 120 to get to the boss if I recall, 500 to get to another area, and 999 to fully complete it
Sergeantmajormario SMM the dark side of the moon was 250 moons, is there another area past that?
There's a Darker side of the moon that you get when you have 500 moons
While everyone is noticing your 64 reference. I notice the Super Mario World reference.
DarkshadowXD63 And I noticed both.
This game hit me in all the right spots when it came out. It just felt like such a breath of fresh air after the Wii U era. I 100% about a month after it came out
4:46 easily your best bit this year.
And it's a throwback bit from 64
Damn it grandpa you didn't take your meds again did you?
“hey, are you ready to mario size?
Mother of God…
(Cue intro)
Oh my goodness, that figurine shelf... talk about one hell of a collection, damn.
9:07 “what the hell are you doing grandpa?” Had me laughing like cra
Great review Johnny, looking forward to see what you think of Cuphead and Hat in Time.
If I could recommend something though, try to hit the 500 moons in Odyssey. It gives you a last reward and it's glorious in my opinion. You'll be missing out a part of the game without it.
The other day was Mr. Iwata’s Birthday on December 6th, But we wish that he could see his greatful success. Happy Birthday Mr. Iwata, and Super Mario Odyssey is really fun.
*Johnny uploads a Bubsy video*
I sleep.
*Johnny uploads a Mario Odyssey Video*
Real shit?
Who sleeps when Johnny uploads a video?!
Morbidcrab don't question it
Best. Game. Of. 2017 in my opinion. Mario's always doing new thinfs, sprinkled with some old things. Glad I got the Switch day 1, it was worth the wait for Odyssey. Can't wait for the future of the Mario series
King Kryptonite I think BOTW is a much better and complete game. I mean, SMO is basically collecting Korok seeds
8:59 I lost it here XD OMG
Why is it so damn difficult for SEGA to do an amazing 3-D game like this with Sonic the Hedgehog?! (looking at you, Sonic Forces...)
and here I thought Johnny was about to go full on "Fan-gasm" like he did with Sonic Mania
I swear I never watch a video of yours without being thoroughly entertained. You create quality content
Great review Johnny! Loved the energy you brought and I’m sure this game provided a lot of that. GRANDPA NOO!!!
Oh, someone get him off that thing before he gets someone killed- Oh no, I am so sorry.
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING GRANDPA!!!???
6:33 Small correction; it actually does matter what Power Moons you get up until the after game. The quota only applies to the current kingdom you're in. You don't have to complete the main quest missions, mind you, but you still have to explore enough of that world to meet the quota.
5:54 goddamnit Johnny. I caught that one too! Once again keep up the good work.
Me:*opens up the TH-cam app* alright time to watch some TH-cam.
*Random video starts*
Me:Oh come on I just wanted to-*sees it's a Johnny video* oh *starts singing along with theme song as loudly as possible*
This game along with Persona 5, Nier Automata, and Sonic Mania are my favorite games of this year.
I wanna play Nier for that Robutt action, but IDK if I should play it on the normal PS4 or PS4 Pro...
Shin Computer-Monster It really doesn't matter. It runs at 60fps on regular ps4.
A Hat in Time and Dusk have been giving me a phenomenal time.
But oh, how I ache to own Persona 5 and NieR: Automata!
Ok Dante, I have my trust in you. Youve always been there for me.
Unlike that other guy with black hair who moans alot.
Zer0dog I didn't play Zelda. I don't know if that's a good place for a newcomer to jump into.
You gotta get 500 for the darker side of thr moon though.... don't stop at 430, you gotta at least get 500/503
Hey Johnny, you forgot mention that Odysssey has 5 save files. Going Options, Data Management and choose save/load and you can see 5 files.
1:43 Not quite a new game, but Onimusha Remastered was announced not too long ago.
So there's that.
*next review is Cuphead*
Well Johnny and his Uncle Greg, and his Uncle Greg, and his Uncle Greg
Cuphead is next? *Prepares Censored Mode*
I think that Censored Mode is gonna need a few HUNDRED spares for that review.
John, you look like you had SO MUCH FUN with this review XD More power to you, man!
Also, you mentioned feeling burnt out after Sonic Forces and Bubsy, and you just said you're going into Cuphead... The fires have been stoked.
"It's always a fuzzy feeling you get when something you hope for actually happens."
Yet, I am STILL waiting for my new spyro game
I love all the references to the past Mario reviews like at 4:49
"Are you ready to mariocise?"
Nice.
Johnny, you should go for 500 moons and tackle the challenge that lies beyond it. Considering your previous endeavors with post-game content I'm thinking that should be a fun time for you. :)
What was Pauline’s dance? It looked like she was dancing literally like Charlie Brown.
It's a reference to her animation in the Donkey Kong arcade game. Metro Kingdom is literally full of nothing but Donkey Kong references and easter eggs that it's easily the highlight of the game (for me, at least)
Can we just appreciate all the callbacks and references to your older videos, especially your Mario 64 review
Such a great video!
I always live your reviews .You're never biased and give good recommendation.
