  • Kidney Stones Diet: A Kidney Doctor and Dietitian Answer Your Questions
When The Cooking Doc (Dr. Blake Shusterman) and The Kidney Dietitian (Melanie Betz, MS RD) talk to people about kidney stones and diet, a number of common questions arise. Here, they talk about the most common questions they get asked about kidney stones and diet including:
    1) What is the first change you should make in your diet for kidney stones?
    2) How much water do you need to drink?
    3) Do you need to limit salt?
    4) Which foods have the highest oxalate?
    5) Do any supplements prevent kidney stones
    6) How much calcium do I need to eat
    7) How can someone who doesn't eat dairy get enough calcium in their diet?

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.
The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and TH-cam sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 TH-cam subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

Tea could potentially have a higher oxalate content and should generally be avoided by people with kidney stone problems. Drinking plenty of water + eating a low oxalate diet is probably the best option.

Since my early 20s I’ve had chronic kidney stone formation/passing and just learned this year what foods were oxalate dense. I have eliminated them from my diet and have not formed or passed a stone since. GREAT ADVICE

There is no way I can handle 3 letters of water a day. To me, there should be a difference between the size of people. Some say they drink a gallon per day. I weigh 113 lbs.
