    Dear Jessi,
I am so incredibly sorry for your recent losses - but much like your vet friend told you - I can think of NO ONE better to care for and guide these amazing creatures through life. Your love for your animal companions is palpable and heartwarming. It's clear that you do the VERY best you can for each and every single one of them. Thank you for the work you do, for sharing your journey (as well as theirs) with us. We are ALL better for it.

Thank you for sharing this with all of us. It takes courage to be vulnerable with hard stuff like this. Thank you for your bravery in order to share with us the full spectrum of caring for the animals.

Thank you for sharing the full scope of an animals life and their death. I understand the hurt and longing to have them back, so much. I find not a lot of animal educators speak of death, which is a shame when you are teaching. Teaching any age the circle life to death, gives them the honest perspective which gets hidden from young ones, when it is as natural as babies being born.
Thank you for this tonight. It was refreshing to hear the special memories you have.

Even though it hurts, I think it's so important to address death. Thank you for sharing these stories with us, Jessi. These absences will always make us ache from time to time, but each presence in our lives teaches us something new, and our friends' memories will live on in our continued (and more knowledgeable) care for other creatures.

I am glad you shared this, vanishing animals leaves us the viewers worried and feel like we cant bond with the animals. You gave all these animals more than anyone else would have and you shared their joys with all of us.

I'm glad you still decided to talk about this. It sucks and it does make most of us sad but it's important, arguably the most important part of having these inter-species friends. I would say that this counts double for your young viewers that have to prepare to deal with loss. I would've liked if you could've gone into more detail in this video on how you dealt with this loss but I wouldn't want to pry too much on a topic like this.

wow... that has to be a ridiculously uncommon thing to have happen to a mink in the wild much less one that was getting easy food. The unfortunate and unlikely is bound to happen eventually though. i appreciate that you were able to take a step back and look at the bigger picture with your vet and that you highlighted that and the positives here. Everyone who loses a pet could learn a thing or two from this.

I lost my hamster to an accident with her wheel and it's been getting me really down, but this really helped me, you reminded me that I gave her 2.5 years of happy, cuddly hamster life, better than she would've gotten stuck in a cage alone, waiting for another adopter. This really helped, and i hope your pain of losing your animal friends goes down too.

A wise friend of mine told me something when I was grieving for one of my cats (all rescues, always). It takes immense courage to love our non-human family members whole-heartedly and without reservation, because we know that odds are so high that they will eventually leave us. The wound they leave never entirely heals even though the edges soften in time. It takes even more courage after the first time to do it all over again, leaving ourselves open to that pain... but we know that the good parts are ultimately worth it. And you do it on a scale I know I couldn't cope with.
Thank you for your honesty and for sharing your furred/feathered/scaled/etc friends with us, the happy memories and the sad ones. Thank you for being you and for everything you give them.

I work at a dog rescue and we recently had 3 dogs pass away within a week -it was the most difficult week of my career - the one I found most difficult was a dog that only came to us a week prior with no one in the world and we at the rescue didn't have much time to bond with him and it always seems as though he died with no one in the world to miss him. This is the most upsetting part of working in rescue

Thank you for sharing this with us. I've enjoyed seeing these three in videos, especially Frasier and they will be missed. You're doing wonderful work!
I used to work with a wildlife rehabilitation center and had a similar experience of being discouraged when we had sad periods. I was going through my instagram from my time there the other day and it was bittersweet seeing all of the old critters, but then realizing a majority of those pictured are no longer with us.
It is such rewarding work, but also very difficult. Glad there are great people like you all at Animal Wonders in the world doing it!

Thanks for sharing with us. It is a little sad hearing about your animals and reading the comments of people who have also lost theirs, but as another pet owner who lost their dog a month ago, it's nice to know that I'm not alone. The weird thing about social media is that, while you can easily share a lot of things, there is also a lingering feeling that some things should not be discussed. Death is one of those. I have not told a lot of people about my dog's death, and it's hard to think about how to approach social media regarding my dog's status when my instagram, for example, was basically dedicated to his pictures.

You can take comfort in knowing that you did all that you could to make their lives great. Bless you. We have been there before. When I was young I was so shocked to come home one Sunday afternoon from church/grocery shopping and find my beloved senior rehome cockatiel we had adopted had died. We surmise he probably had heart failure. His known age with humans was 15 years old, but was adopted from a pet store that said he was wild caught, so he could have been older. We also lost a cat at home that was recovering from UTI surgery at age 10, plus another 14 year old cat and our two beloved dogs of 15 1/2 & 14 that we euthanized five years apart. They all grew up together so it was a blow to our hearts having them go one after the other :( but now we have a sassy Crimson Bellied Conure and a sweet cuddly teddy bear hamster so the house once again has animal noises and companionship after 4 1/2 years of silence and we love them so much. :D

I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of your friends. Losing an animal under our care can be harder in some ways even than losing blood kin. It can seem that we failed them because they depended on us for everything. Losing three such friends in a row must be especially hard. I do not believe that you could have done anything less than your very best to keep Boxer, Loquita and Fraiser safe, healthy and happy. Sometimes bad things just happen, completely at random, no matter what you do. Occasionally bad things randomly happen three times in a row. Please don't blame yourself or take this bad luck too much to heart. You are a good friend to your animal friends. They are lucky to be cared for by somebody as kind, as conscientious and as knowledgeable as you. Leave yourself time and space to grieve. Have faith that you will feel better in time.
Also, your immune system is probably under unusual stress and could be a little weaker. A daily dose of ginseng for a month or so can't hurt, (unless you're allergic.) Ginseng and ginger tea is nice.

Animals quickly become our friends and even family when our care and it's so hard to lose them for any reason. a few years ago I had to have my two cats euthanized within about two months of each other. Thanks for sharing this. To me it's especially sad to hear about Lokita's passing. I adore water dragons and she was so amazing. It's important to remember with joy, the fantastic personalities and memories that all our animals leave behind.
On a brighter note, my blue tongue skink likes to sit in his water bowl too, as a defiant protest when I leave it empty to dry out once it's been cleaned. He won't move until I've filled it up again (with him still sitting in it of course). He then climbs out of the bowl and turns around to take a drink :)

Thank you for sharing, Jessi. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I'm also grateful that you were able to spend the time that you did with these animals. Death is always difficult, but it is a reality that should be talked about because it eventually touches us all. I remember that, as a child, when a goldfish or a hamster died, my parents wouldn't hide it from me. They used it as an opportunity to teach me about death, and as an adult I am very grateful. Even though it's painful and difficult, it's better for death to be something we can talk about than something to keep hidden. So thank you for sharing these animals with us, including the end of their lives. Even in their passing they are teaching us and helping us grow.

I work at an animal shelter (no kill) and it always feels like everything comes in groups. Last summer we lost half a litter of puppies to parvo and the next month we had two of a litter of three five month old kittens pass unexpectedly and with no previous symptoms of illness. Now I always worry when one animal gets sick or passes, that it'll be another barrage of illness and death. It's the hardest part of working at the shelter.

  • @lindyhop24

I think this is a really important video to share. We all need to remember that occasional death is a normal party of any facility that houses animals, and trying to hide it and sweep it under the rug doesn't help anyone. For those running the facilities/working with the animals, they need a chance to grieve, and we don't want to create a public misconception that we humans can somehow magically care for animals without the occasional illness/accident/old age related deaths. I really like what you said, though, about how the important part is to prevent the same type of death from happening again, and that that's the metric by which to judge your success. I'm so sorry for your loss, they all seemed like amazing little critters.

How did loquita die? Natural causes? How did fraiser get a bone in his intestines?

Dillon O'Neill We didn't get a definitive cause of death for Lokita. Frasier probably swallowed the bone with a chunk of meat he chewed off his food. He received whole prey items (rats, mice, quail, and chicken) because that's exactly what he would eat in the wild.

AnimalWonders Montana if that's what minks eat in the wild, I wonder how often this happens to them or any other carnivore.
