Thank you so much for this video! I was scared that there might be some sort of chip in the USB plug, but after seeing your video I decided to proceed. I just finished repairing mine and I'm listening to the video again wearing headphones that until recently had to be thrown away! Thanks so much again!!!!
I was also scared, but the cord was so bad that we either fixed it or threw it away. But in the future, they just might use "smart" cables. If for no other reason than to prevent DIY repairs.
@@tsbrownie Well, that's why I said "big heat shrink." My guess is that what will fit over the USB connector will also be large enough to fit over the strain relief. As for cosmetics... Your are correct, it is not necessary for this project. You are looking for function over form, in this situation. And, to save a hundred bucks for college, I'm guessing... Grin. I really liked that it was a father and son project! The headset looks well loved. That's great, as you said they were not a cheap set. Oh... A can of spray foam upholstery cleaner might do the trick on cleaning the head band cushion. Cheers!
@@tsbrownie Additional thought... If you put a long piece of heat shrink over the jacket as soon as you cut the wire, when you trim the jacket back, the remaining heat shrink could secure it... preventing unraveling... I did not say that well, but you get the picture...
@@t1d100 You got that right, he needs cash for college! The mic boom was also cracked, and we fixed it with superglue and shrinkwrap. I think you might be able to see it in the closing shot.
@Daniel-rr6ul Soldering requires 2 basic things to work a clean workpiece and enough heat, all the rest is icing. I have several videos on soldering basics.
Thank you so much for the video, my Corsair Void Elite usb also got the cable issue, where jacket worn out. Your video will help me a lot hopefully. I was being nervous to do it until your video. Now i need to get the ideal cable for it & start doing the job.
I've never done that on a headset. I've rebuilt a plain mic. In theory it should be similar; it's just 2 or 3 wires and watch the temperature on the mic (I wrap heat sensitive things in damp tissue).
@@tsbrownie that's actually perfect. I have my Mic ground and Agrnd looped and grounded (Turns out the end up together anyways, likely due to a designing plan that never got fully thought through). So here's to hoping it worked with the 4 cables, I never did get to test it yesterday. Solid video and thanks for clarifying!
Looking at your video and getting ready to replace my old cable. However, the USB cable I have has a gold line instead of the one with a big black line. Is it okay to solder the gold line to the big black line here? The rest of the lines are the same in black, white, green, and red.
@@tsbrownieThen the big black line on the original line is the ground line. Okay. If the grounding line is large black, I can solder the gold to the black spot, and if the gold is the grounding line, I can solder the gold to the big black spot.

Excellent. Maybe see if you can slide some big heat shrink over the USB connector to dress up the big fishing lure tie at the strain relief.
We should have done that before the strain reliever/soldering. If we had not let the woven jacket fray, it would look better.

Glad it was useful. I know how it is, it was pretty scary the first time I repaired one.
can you share how to replacement microphone?

Hey can you share info on that replacement cable please? I just popped open a braided cable to find only 4 wires.
It was an ordinary 2 meter USB a to c cable from Ugreen company. Note that our 2 ground wires were not insulated.

@crazy08654 Check the gold wire to see if it connected to the outside of the plug (ground).

@crazy08654 You should compare the old wire and new wire plug connections and go by that. Color can vary.
