Salt the oil instead of the popped corn. This ensures an even coating of salt on the popcorn. I also check my oil temperature by adding a few kernels in the pan with the cold oil. I then heat the oil until all the kernels pop, at which point you know the oil is ready... then add the rest of the corn to the pan and shake around to coat. At this point I remove the pan from the heat and let it sit for about 30seconds. This allows all the kernels to heat up in the oil, so when you finally do put it back on the heat, they all pop very quickly and nothing ever burns.
I followed your tips instead of the video and the popcorn turned out great and they didn't even burn. This was my very first attempt to make them on stove BTW
"the oil is just so the popcorn wont stick to the pan" my dude popcorn is not sticking to any pan. the oil is used to conduct heat faster, evenly, and more efficiently than air thus making the kernels 'pop' before they burn. its important to know the oil's purpose because it's much more relevant to cooking in general.
i feel like this was his first time making popcorn and he copied a recipe lol. he said "idk how this is gonna react" when pouring it into the bowl. how wouldn't you if you've done it before. weird vibes.
1) I pour the oil in my pot 2) Put three kernels in the pot with the top on and turn the stove to medium-high (closer to medium). 3) Shake the pot every once and awhile, wait for the all three kernels to pop 4) Add all the kernels in, take it off the heat for 30 seconds and shake it to evenly coat the kernels in oil, then place it back on the heat. 5) Then just shake it fairly frequently (with the lid cracked a tiny bit, makes the popcorn more crispy) and wait till you hear no more popping (or popping slows down quite a bit). Haha, it sounds confusing, but it's very simple and I find this the best way to never burn it and you barely have any uncooked popcorn kernels afterwards.
If you shake the pot, the popped kernels will go to the top, and the unpopped will stay on the bottom. No burning. Also, for a twist use flavored olive oil. We have made it with rosemary infused olive oil (butter and salt normally) and it was so good.
Shake my ass! There's enough shakin goin on each time a kernel pops. Olive oil taste like crap in popcorn so only tell people you don't like to try it.
A little tip, when the popcorn is done popping, remove from stove, take off the lid and qiuckly cover with a kitchen towel. The towel will let steam escape and prevent condensation so your popcorn stays crisp while allowing heat to dissipate. After a minute or so you won't have any more delayed pops to deal with.
The most important thing is to use the right kind of oil when popping corn on a stove top. That is due to my experience in trying different oils. I found that corn oil works the best than canola or peanut oil. Use a little oil to coat the bottom of the pot before heating it up gradually with the lid on. And I ended up with more popcorns than with kernels when I used a thin coating of corn oil. Believe me, I tried it and it worked very well for me. When I used other oils, the popcorn didn't pop well. So now, I have more popcorn to enjoy and its not even burnt.
This is what I do when I cook popcorn on the stove top, I place the oil in the pan and maybe about 4-5 kernels at the bottom and wait until those pop then just add the rest of the popcorn kernels and cover with the lid. Take the pot of for about 10-15 seconds and shake it around and then throw it back on the stove. The rest of the kernels should pop straight away as the oil is already heated up! It's fail proof pop corn every time as they all pop evenly without burning! Then just add your salt and butter and enjoy!!
I've tried using olive oil but switched to coconut oil. My kids love it. It gives it a unique flavor. I'm of the opinion that u cant have 2 much butter but thats just me.
I definitely prefer stovetop popcorn. My college roommate introduced me to stovetop popcorn, and now I only use the microwaveable popcorn when I'm at work. You should try using just olive oil. Heat the pot with a generous amount of olive oil, cook the popcorn the same as you typically do, then top it with salt, instead of more oil/butter. It's delicious!
For the fluffiest popcorn: Use a heavy pot and I like canola oil. Get the oil as hot as possible BEFORE adding the kernels. (NEVER add kernels to cold oil) I use med high heat. (The hotter the better) Just be careful not to burn it. Burnt popcorn sucks! Use a vented lid so the steam can escape and not get your popcorn all soggy. I don't shake shit! There's enough shaking going on with each pop of the kernels to keep things moving. I then dump it all in a box, close the top and shake so the small stuff exits out the narrow slits I made in the box. You know, the unpopped kernels and small crap no one wants to eat. I add some Flavacol and maybe some butter, mix it up and dump it into the serving bowl. DONE. I like the box because it's big and each and every popcorn is coated pretty much equally.
Was great! If u have a burner with numbers put it on 6.5(between 6 and 7) And then put oil in,wait 20 seconds then put in popcorn and cover wait a few seconds and wait for the popping! Check ever 5-10 seconds! Then follow his instructions.Worked great thanks for the video it tasted better than a bag woot woot!
It’s such an easy and delicious way to make popcorn, and there’s something special about the simplicity of it. Just a little oil, some kernels, and a bit of salt, and you’ve got a perfect snack. No fancy machines or microwave bags needed-just the classic way we grew up making it.
Thank you so much for this video. I was looking for natural popcorn recipes to make at home And you not only showed me that but saved me from buying a popcorn maker which equals a savings of 50 bucks and space in my kitchen!
Try popping in coconut oil and adding Parmesan cheese instead of butter...yummo! Also, crack the lid slightly to let the steam out and the popcorn is even more sturdy...so many ways to make great yummy homemade popcorn! I'm trying your way next time :)
Thank you so much for this tutorial, I tried to make the popcorn in the microwave with just the instruction on the box. All I made was a mess with a few popcorn sprinkled in. But I was able to save most of the popcorn thanks to you.
What are the amounts? My father used to work in a movie theater when he was young and learned how to do it there and it’s wonderful! He’s known for his delicious popcorn! 🍿 He uses popcorn salt as it’s much finer and easily sticks to the popcorn. He adds his oil, salt and the kernels all in the pot together, so when it’s done, you just dump it all in a bowl and it’s already salted.
Stove top popcorn is the best!! You should try homemade kettle corn!! It's the best!! 👍👍👍 Kettle corn: 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup white sugar 1/2 cup unpopped popcorn kernels Directions: Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Once hot, stir in the sugar and popcorn. Cover, and shake the pot constantly to keep the sugar from burning. Once the popping has slowed to once every 2 to 3 seconds, remove the pot from the heat and continue to shake for a few minutes until the popping has stopped. Pour into a large bowl, and allow to cool, stirring occasionally to break up large clumps. Enjoy!!! So yummy 😊
I bought a microwave popcorn bowl and it also works pretty good. You don't have to put oil in it. Just the popcorn kernels. You also then add your own salt and butter. It's better than the other kind of microwave popcorn.
not lying: I had forgotten you could do this, like i thought you needed some special pan or machine lol. i saw on another video that theaters use Coconut oil and this "Flavacol" salt you can buy on amazon, it's yellow and gives it the color and flavor, gonna buy some and try it.
Yes sometimes I add Coconut Oil to my butter and it is amazing and it's really good if you add it to your peanut butter also....It gives peanut butter a whole new flavor.
My mom has always cooked popcorn on the stove. I’m 14 and do it as well. I usually put oil in, then one kernel, when it pops, I add the rest in, and then put the lid on and let it pop, then add salt since we don’t really like butter in it.
Yes, good basic simple popcorn making. I have a Orville Redenbacher's popcorn maker that stirs the popcorn with a small amount of oil and fills the cover/ bowl without burning it and not a lot of waste. Then I put on melted butter, salt and also butter salt type seasoning to give it a more buttery taste. Just one suggestion, put melted butter last, it prevents salt and seasoning to only stick to the melted butter.

Would love hearing about a Japanese recipe you like :) if you could share with us. Every time you and Judy have some Asian dishes we're like...man we'd love knowing how to cook that deliciousness :) Thank you nevertheless! Amazingly easy and tasteful cooking tips and recipes.
Scalloped potatoes please! I'll be making it for thanksgiving. I tried out laura vitales recipe in the past but I'd like to try something different this time. (:
We've waited forever for that. Benji- you made the dish about 47 times but never did a video still lol Come on, thanksgiving is less than a week away! Please :)
I add coconut oil instead of butter sometimes. It gives me the oily texture I want of movie theater popcorn, and the salt sticks to it perfectly. Doesn't really give it much of a coconut taste, if any at all.
you can put kernels in a brown paper bag, a bit of oil and seasoning, and pop it in the microwave also for fast, easy, fresh preservative-free popcorn as well! nice video, thanks for sharing!
More Tips... use avocado oil... it has a super high smoke point and is a healthy fat ... also when you add the popcorn to the oil let it heat up and then remove from heat just before it starts to pop for about a minute so all the kernels warm up evenly then return to heat and pop leaving the lid slightly tilted so the steam escapes for a crispier result! Lastly, I prefer to use white popping corn as it is less chewy and more tender :)
It is the only way I can have it. I add nutritional yeast to mine. Tastes like cheese! I use a fine grease screen ( like the kind you get at the Asian market... I am half Asain, too) so it never gets steamed and stays super crunchy. No moisture accumulates .
my tip is when it's popping I lift the lid up and down numerous times to let the steam out so it doesn't get soggy... I never tried it just keeping the lid on so I'm not sure if it will get soggy but It's just something I do. 😋 also I crack black pepper and use a micro grate to grate parmesan cheese on top
I've done popcorn on stove all my life... i tried a mesh veggie steamer (upside down) as a lid. It works really good.. just have to wipe away oil from stovetop afterward
Benji... Popcorn is my one true obsession!!! I stopped watching a video as soon as this popped up!!!! Thanksssss!!! Love from brazil and i watch ur vlogs everyday!!!!
Thanks for this recipe Benji! can't wait to try it. I love that you guys don't have a microwave. Even though some things are much quicker in the microwave, cooking something on the stove or toaster oven seems like a healthier route. Thanks for all the food & life inspirations.
That's actually a misconception. In fact, heating your veggies in the microwave actually preserves _more_ nutrients than boiling them in water. There are no unhealthy processes going on in the microwave, it's literally just heat created by getting the molecules moving.
@@LinkEX there's a tradeoff. While a microwave doesn't reach high enough temperatures to create the carcinogens found in grilled/fried foods, they've been found to destroy certain nutrients such as polyphenols. For the best of both worlds healthwise, steaming may be the best method of cooking.
01:40 I went into the bedroom and told my wife and daughter not to scream at 21:35 when people prepare to bed....then she told me they didn't even say anything. and I went back to check the video and low and behold....the sound is in the video xD hahaha
Benji you need to make more videos you are hilarious and so natural... I grew up making popcorn like this for years and we had a microwave...now I'm just lazy lol...loved the out takes 👍
good advice pouring that butter around the edge of the bowl, nothing worse than a soggy puddle of popcorn, I've thought about spraying in the butter as well, better more even coverage
+wolfattack 1/2 cup kernels 2 tbsp oil... heat oil medium heat add 3 kernels after first kernel pops add kernels. take off heat periodically to release steam and use a wide spoon to shift the bottom popcorn so they dont overcook. when popping slows 2 - 3 seconds betwen pops its done.
Hey, I recommend after adding the corn inside the pan, cover it and shake it left to right so that the corn will still be heated but they will not burn :) ! It is an easy trick to get away with it :)
I thought this was really helpful! I've never made popcorn on the stove like that before as I don't really eat popcorn, but I think I might give this a try! :)
Just wanted to add that coconut oil is the best to use ...it's what the movie theaters use and lemon pepper, parmesan cheese and a touch of chile powder and melted butter are most excellent.🤪

what if you mix oil butter and salt in the pan and make it?

How much oil do you add to the pan
Used motor oil, would not recommend.
hahaaha
it's effective. i've even tried new diesel oil and that was great

Ok this might sound weird, but I’m Mexican, so I put lime on everything and whenever I make popcorn I put lime on them and it’s soooo goood 🤤
Austin's face and personality was like my ideal type of guy i liked a long time ago, and i find him so handsome~
Hahahah The bloopers and the popcorn looks yummy :P

Thank you. My microwave broke and I just did it and it worked. I'm gonna subscribe
Great Job Benji... Waiting on the Bomb Tuna Salad recipe your mum makes.
good advice pouring that butter around the edge of the bowl, nothing worse than a soggy puddle of popcorn, I've thought about spraying in the butter as well, better more even coverage

Me too DX

+wolfattack 1/2 cup kernels 2 tbsp oil... heat oil medium heat add 3 kernels after first kernel pops add kernels. take off heat periodically to release steam and use a wide spoon to shift the bottom popcorn so they dont overcook. when popping slows 2 - 3 seconds betwen pops its done.

Put the popcorn in only when the oil is really hot. And also when you hear the first pop, lower the flame of the stove.
Hey, I recommend after adding the corn inside the pan, cover it and shake it left to right so that the corn will still be heated but they will not burn :) ! It is an easy trick to get away with it :)
1.8m people heard you say "Pop pop poppity popcorn."
I wish I was Austin so I can get to sample all of this food! Hahahah(:
Almost 300,000 subscribers! Go Benji!
I thought this was really helpful! I've never made popcorn on the stove like that before as I don't really eat popcorn, but I think I might give this a try! :)

Just made this tonight with my daughter. We had the kernels and she wanted popcorn. I’ll never buy the “bags” anymore. Thanks for this!

you rock Benji and inspire me to eat better every day..:)
Just wanted to add that coconut oil is the best to use ...it's what the movie theaters use and lemon pepper, parmesan cheese and a touch of chile powder and melted butter are most excellent.🤪
Stopped watching after "I've never done that before", didnt come here to watch a noob
I love my popcorn soggy buttery 😂💯
Love this, thank you! I'd love to see popcorn toppings, maybe drizzle chocolate or something sweet!
That is how my parents made popcorn way back in the 1950's and 60's, and probably their parents, and their parents before them, etc.
