I've never gotten why people disliked Wesley. It always seemed like they wanted him to be an adult when he was simply a teenager trying to learn to be an adult. So he occasionally/often put his foot in it. That's part of growing up. As to the poor ending of his time on TNG, I blame poor writing.
Good point and why does Captain Picard treat him badly and repeatedly tells him to "shut up"? In the Next Generation novel "Death in Winter" by Michael Jan Friedman, before he was Captain, Picard was hopelessly in love with Dr. Crusher and it's likely that Picard treats Wesley badly because he has bitter feelings over Beverly marrying Wesley's deceased father Jack. That could explain why.
I always thought Wesley was a good character played by a good young actor, but his character wasn't written up to his potential. A real teen, smart and ambitious, and working on a real ship, would have plenty of realistic opportunities for everyday, relatable problems, for occasional heroics and screwups, just learning how to be an adult and an officer. He'd have all the things teens go through, and he'd have to learn how to be a good officer onboard a ship. Even a genius teen would not often save the day over trained, educated, seasoned officers, but only rarely and it would need to be well written so it doesn't come off as a Mary Sue plot device. Wesley did get some good stuff, but I think they handled Nog and Jake better, more realistically in some ways. Still, I never got the dislike some people had for Wesley's character, and Will Wheaton as an actor has more talent than he got to show much as Wesley.
Wesley's sweater though... hahaha I love his collection of sweaters. Also, he looked soooo little in the first episode! He didn't look 15, he looked like 13...

I could almost imagine Wesley too intimidated to sit in the captain's chair. Imagining the orders that were given and which captain sat in it. So much history.

No, Crusher was under Picard's command, not the other way around. Picard and Jackwere great friends and both had feelings for Beverly, but she wound up married to Jack. I believe Picard actually knew her first and introduced her t Jack. She also had some feelings for Picard even though she was married to Jack. Picard while in command of the stargazer gave the order that resulted in Jack's death- something like a wrath of khan scenario where Jack had to make repairs to the ship that he wouldn't survive. Picard still has feelings for Beverly and she has feelings for him but... they both felt like given the circumstances, it didn't seem right for them to be together. They always had a close relationship and there was that romantic tension. In one possible timeline, they do get married and later divorce. At one point in the last season when they are telepathically linked, Picard thinks that maybe they should explore the possibility of a relationship, but Crusher rebukes him. In that episode, she learns that when she was assigned to the Enterprise in the first season, he was still attracted to her and was responsible for her reassignment to starflett medical on earth in season 2, but felt troubled by that decision and decided that he need to subdue his feelings for her, which he thought he had when he had her come back for season 3 (although it's clear that those feelings are still there). In this scene in the video, the last time Picard saw wesley was at Jack's funeral when wesley was just a baby. Here, as Wil Wheaton put it, he is seeing/maybe trying not to see Jack in his son wesley. Picard at the same time both feels guilt, but understands that he gave the correct order at the time to save the stargazer. There is a complex thing with Wesley where Picard sort of wants to play a surrogate father role to Wesley but also feels that it's inappropriate. To be clear, the order that sent Jack to his death was not in any way shape or form motivated by jealousy. But this is the reason for his complex relationship with the Crushers.

Jack Crush was Picard's XO and Picard was the CO. I think there's an untold story through TNG and I hope they flesh it out in the next Picard iteration. Picard has always lover Beverly and harbours guilt for coveting his friends wife. His honour would never allow him to pursue Beverly because he would view it as a betrayal of his dead friend. Picard didn't let Wes on the bridge because he was Beverly's or even Jack's son - he let him on because he could have been HIS son. Picard came to view Wes as the closest thing to a son he would ever have and had to balance the roles of father and captain while haunted by the fact that he is only in this position because he ordered Jack to his death.

It was basically because he was saving the ship every other episode, while the adults were bumbling around.
