  • Here goes nothing !!! First time for everything - it went smoother than expected. I would buy my own bore bar - but $ 2500 is not easy to come by. Maybe someday !!!

Back in the day I remember taking the engine out of my 65 bug and taking the case down to the machine shop they had it bored in a couple of minutes and I was on my way home with oversize bearings $25 poorer.

This is a PortaTool originally called the VW-700, later version called the Mainliner has the hydraulic feed all built into the flywheel end of tool. The external hydraulic feed in your video is actually designed to be mounted on flywheel end & you drive it from the pulley end. You can get actual original instructions that came with the tool in 1970s from BEAM Equipment. I was pleased to buy a set for $15 because I bought one of these at an auction a month ago. Used a similar Mainliner on at least a thousand VW cases 1973 thru 1999. Getting back into it now in retirement.

Thank You for the information. There are not many videos or people that explain the setup on these. So I'm making an educated guess on the procedure. I will for sure get the manual.

There are a couple of different boring tools that have been around for decades and all have different designs for holding tool bits. There is one problem I believe they all have and that is the ability to cut the thrust face on the inside of the case, at least that is the issue with a Truline bar. The problem is to be able to remove just enough to insure perpendicularity to the centerline of the bore. If that is not accomplished before you cut the thrust to size from the outside, you will not get a uniform interference fit for the thrust. I made the tools years ago, both to cut the inside thrust and outside. The inside I attached to the bar as an additional step and the other is a separate bar with a cutter. I get perfect fit every time and I would gladly share my design...! Dan Nelson

Thanks for the video. I'm wondering where you found the Gene Berg tool to center the tool.

I bought most of this stuff from the Gene Berg website.
I have not done anything for about a year or so. I'm sure most everything is still available.

      Porta Tool
They were on loan from a friend.
I have my own set up now. A machinist friend made some pieces - I bought a few parts & Port a Tool.

Geehuz man - you are winging it? on a customer's block too? How do you even know if you have the proper bearing crush..or if the bores are even round? T/here is a way to make the PortaTool a lot more accurate than what you got there. Those setscrew cutter bodies move during the cut and will cut oblong. A new body that is bigger and clamp-style will do a better job. Better yet - get a TruLine boring bar.
