- Who knows how much longer we are going to be able to get Aftermarket Pencil holders?! So lemme show you how to make a set at home. Hell even if you can still buy some but want some on a budget you can do this as well!
Honestly only takes about 45min per bore and it will drastically increase just how many pencils you will be able to hold!

@@Smeedia Late to this party but, I'm getting ready to do this to my EJ255 and am wondering about that hole that now exists between the two intakes (cylinders) after I pull the shaft out. Trying to do the physics on that but am getting a headache.
Love you for this one. I hope the tuner scene is gonna come together and share this kind of info 5+ years down the line when we have to do all this / tuning ourselves due to epa crackdowns
I forsee a future of some mods having to be DIY done at home, hopefully when the time comes it'll help 🙏

Gonna sound weird, but if you grind the end of the little flap screw off til its flush with the bar (no visible threads out the back), they unscrew so much easier and don't strip. Worked awesome for me. So many pencils! ✏ 🖋🖊🤙

With everything moving to electronics, finding a good quality pencil holder is becoming increasingly rare. Thank you for showing us how to create high quality pencil holders out of parts that will definitely not be going into any functioning vehicle... because they're too busy holding my pencils, of course.

If you put that small motor back on and plug it back in, I'm assuming that the computer won't know I gutted the insides? Asking for a friend. The friend is wanting to do this but lives in an emissions controlled state.

i was lucky to find a place that still sells pencil holders - cant believe they goin after the pencils!

If I reattach the motor, does that prevent a “check pencil light”?
Mine has a sensor on the other side... I'm thinking about leaving the rod and just removing flaps. The check engine code disables my cruise control
Also will this throw a code if you plug the motor back into the pencil holder?

I’m in Cali so was wonder if I can do this but just put the motor back in so I won’t throw a code?
Might need some specs on this pencil holder, would the holes on the side lead to any pencil leakage, or would it be ok to leave them as is and take a slight performance hit?
They should be alight as is, for optimal pencil flow it would be ideal to weld them shut and smooth them out. but wouldent be the end of the world if you did not
Is there any downside when allowing all the pencils to flow through like that?
I mean, i think i’ll have to buy more pencils just so i can fill my new pencil holders. Might not be good for the trees though.
No real downsides, as long as you have thr appropriate pencil tune it should work great 😁

So if the motor is hooked back up and plugged back in, will it not trigger a “pencil error” code? Or will i need to sharpen my tune?
You'll need to resharpen the tune. Some people leave the rod in there with the motors and it ahouldent throw any codes

If you left the acuating rod and motors it shouldent throw a code 🤫

Look forward to making my own shop pencil holder soon! Quick question if you don't mind. When rebuilding a set of heads, would you recommend new valve guides, seats and locks as well as valves and springs and retainers?
If you've got over 150K and looking to rebuild yes, or if your looking to make more power and planning on doing cams at some point, yes 🙏

Will the life/reliability of the engine decrease if we do a tgv/egr delete? What are the pros and cons?
Nope. Removing the pencil restriction allows more to flow though it. More air, more fuel more boom

Don’t need to drill the first bit off where the motor is as the whole thing slides out that way. Drill out the screws remove the flaps and tap it from the sensor side. Just done it today
Unfortunately, difficult to find someone that will tune this bigger pencil holders nowadays. Can I use this without a tune?
If you leave the metal rod in there and just remove the flaps you can get-away without needing a tune

🙏🙏 the thinner FA20 ones should be fairly simple. Assuming that most newer cars follow suit shouldent be too difficult if needed

Have you or anyone here had any luck using aluminum brazing rods to fill the holes? Also thinking about leaving the motor on but heard the motor gets in the way of fuel rails?
I've never tried but in theory I don't see why it woildent work. The fuel rails should clear the motors 🤔

Just removed my TGV on my 16 WRX , how do you clean that nasty sh$#_ from the inner walls?
I used a little bit of solvent and ate it right up 🔥
That mod is can be simple with the same effect just remove the wings inside without interfering with the motor

If you don't leave the bar that holds the buttfly valves your pencil holder will cause a problem. But no one said the butterfly had to be on the bar!

10/10 times those screws are stamped in the back to keep them from unscrewing
