In grams i use 10ml distilled water, 5ml rose hydrosol, and 1 tablet 1000mg ascorbic acid. I adjusted the pH to 3.3 using TEA. Im on my second week now. Also, no sting or irritation at all.
To update my post. I bought a L Ascorbic Acid powder and using 15% for my serum with 0.5% hyaluronic acid. Adjusted its final pH is 2.9, works amazing, I could say more effective than vit c tablet.

I found that the littlextera riceberry vitamin c face serum gives my skin more glowing and evens out my pale skin tone. It also diminished my fine lines. Now I use it consistently in my skincare routine. One more thing I noticed is that it helps wounds like scratches or marks from blemishes heal faster. Now I'm super happy with my current skin care routine, and I intend to stick with it for a long time.
I use riceberry vitamin c serum regularly. It has lightened up my dark spots. I have a glow in my face than before. Just be consistent with your usage. Always apply good sunscreen after this. I recommend riceberry for this as it is a great match for my skin. And we can use this morning or night as needed. The texture is so smooth going and simple to apply.

Thank you so much Michelle! Buying somewhat "cosmetically elegant" spf is already expensive enough for me, since the amount of product that is needed is a lot. All things considered, a skincare routine can be really expensive even without buying high end brands. I don't think I would have (or rather, could have) started using vit C without this DIY.

Hi, 👋 thanks for this new tip. Which brand of VITAMIN C are u using? Where do u buy yours and what benefits have u noticed from this DIY? Please, tell us more 🙏 😫
Does using the serum and then sunscreen or moisturizer affect the sunscreen or moisturizer negatively? I've always seen that sunscreen should be applied to bare skin, because that's how it is tested. Will the sunscreen work properly when put on top of a vit c serum? Also my moisturizer contains vitamin e, will it actuallt absorb into my skin or float on top of the vitamin c ?
@@tes33720any product you apply on top of the serum will work perfectly fine. and no, sunscreen doenst need to go on bare skin. it should be the last step of a skincare routine after serums, moisturizer. sunscreen can even be reapplied on top of makeup because how it works is it essentially creates a protective film over your skin to protect it:)
Here's the formula (please correct me if I'm wrong) I like her videos, but I had to watch this a couple of times because formula examples were not well explained. The only example for calculating the ratios went by very quickly. Here ya go - 20 ml of 10% L-ascorbic acid serum: 20 ml distilled water (RO is about the same) 2 grams ascorbic acid (approx 1/3 tsp) Mix until fully dissolved Pinch(s) of baking soda to reach 3-4 pH Imperial measurements 1 oz of 10% LAA serum: 1 oz distilled or RO water 3 grams ascorbic acid (approx 1/2 tsp) Mix until fully dissolved Pinch(s) baking soda to reach 3-4 pH Multiply as needed. Use within a week. Ascorbic acid quickly loses strength. For 5% ascorbic acid serum reduce LAA amount by 50%, for 15% increase by 50%. Water amount remains the same. Will need to also adjust baking soda. Wrap bottle to protect from light. I added the note that RO (reverse osmosis) is about the same as distilled since and lot of ppl have RO systems. RO removes all contaminants and minerals almost like distilled does (when it's working properly, that is, lol!) She also says do not use tap water because mineral ions in the water can speed how quickly ascorbic acid decomposes. (Spring and well water contains minerals too.) 👍 ❤️
This is great. I've found Vitamin C helped with the keratosis pilaris on my arms, but you need so much that I was going through so many bottles. Even the cheap brands added up, and all those containers felt wasteful. I'll definitely give this a go.
I love your videos! I'm a Physician Assistant student but my BS is in chemistry and I worked in Dermatology before starting my PA program... Needless to say, I love your content! Would love to see a video on stem cell serums/topicals for anti-aging skincare. I've done some scant research and although these products appear to work well, there seems to be some very serious potential downsides related to the lack of specificity of the targeted cells, for example promoting the differentiation of UV damaged cells and the potential carcinogenic risk associated with that. One of the articles I read was Stem Cells in Dermatology and Anti-aging Care of the Skin by Amy Forman Taub, MD and Kim Pham, PhD
I read this on your blog last year and made my own! I put mine into a little spray bottle and wrap black paper over it and I use all over my body. I just eyeball the powder with a tiny spoon and don’t bother with the distilled water or baking soda lol. I roughly check it with a ph strip tho >.< but it works and it’s so cheap and convenient! Lol

Thank you, Michelle! I made my first batch last Friday and it doesn’t make my skin irritated whatsoever. As I do have a quite thick skin I am thinking of making a more potent serum. 😎
nice. for those who did this can you share how much you had to throw away because the vitamin c became unstable before you can finish the batch? and how long did you manage to keep up the weekly diy of a serum? did you see any visible changes on your skin after a month or so?
Michelle, I'm old and shrivelled up from the Queensland sun. I've been looking at getting HA powder to make a hydrating body product. Love a diy idea on that from you.
I use The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid + Alpha-Arbutin and put it in the refrigerator. The freshness last much longer. Mine was changing color after 2 weeks then read about putting it in the refrigerator. After 3 days the serum became clear again.
Hey, this was very interesting! I only have a question... so many studies indicates that for the ascorbic acid to penetrate the skin barrier it needs to be at low ph (less than 3.5) so if you make it at skin ph, doesn't this mean that the ascorbic acid is not absorbed or is minimally absorbed? thanks a lot!
Hey, I love your videos! I was wondering if you could do something on dermarolling/ micro needling. I am finding a lot of conflicting information on whether it's safe and if it even works for scars and hyperpigmentation. Thanks for always approaching skincare in a scientific way :)
It's safe if you do it safely. You have to know how to sterilize everything correctly, what pattern to do with it, what needle length to use, what intervals to do it in, when NOT to do it (e.g. when you have the skin infected or damaged and so on you need to postpone the treatment), when you need to switch out the tool for a new one, etc. The point of dermarollers is to create very specific controlled damage that the skin can heal well. It helps break up scar tissue and make it consist of more healthy tissue and less scar tissue. It can also help reduce 'genetic' dark undereye circles in some cases, but it is extremely important you don't randomly experiment but actually know exactly what you are doing so you can do it in a safe manner.
I would love that too ! I have no doubt that most people can do it safely without being an esthetician, but you'd need to have all the correct info about it. Here are some useful documents : > dermaroller.owndoc.com/dermaroller-instructions.pdf > simpleskincarescience.com/dermarolling/ > th-cam.com/video/R5o_EWxI23Y/w-d-xo.html > th-cam.com/video/8NPWkqhL1KU/w-d-xo.html
I'm about to run out of my beloved Rohto Melano CC Vitamin C serum. It can be quite expensive because I have to purchase it online, I'm so glad I found this video! Can't wait to make it and save $$$. BTW, I just subscribed! ❤️
I just made a new batch of this, I love it! I’ve been adding some glycerin and The Ordinary’s Resveratrol & Ferulic Acid serum. Not sure if that’s why but it lasts far longer than 2 weeks. Thanks for the trustworthy tips!
If you want a very blendable, lipid vitamin C which is stable and non irritating get tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate at Lotioncrafter. I’ve used it for years.
I found a stabilized l-ascorbic acid complex a while back, it's not the kind of complex you can make at home because it requires some specialized equipment (can't even make it in my lab) but buying it isn't too pricy. I've found it's worth it for me since I use vitamin c 2x daily on my face and once daily on the rest of my body. It's an l-ascorbic acid, glutathione, and gold complex which is completely stable. This means I'm able to make pretty huge batches (about 450 ml) and remake it less often. Also, since I am a formulator with a home lab I already have a ton of emulsifiers, emulsion stabilizers, and preservatives so I'm able to stabilize and preserve the big quantities of serum I make and use it over about a month instead of 1-2 weeks. I can also add other actives into my formula and mess around with it a lot, which I definitely do. It's wildly different every month at this point lol. I will say, though, I do have to add an additional step in the LAA concentration calculations because I'm using a complex of LAA and not pure LAA. So, while it isn't a huge inconvenience it is a little bit annoying and does complicate the process more.
Nice, I bought the ordinary l-ascorbic acid powder and don't really use it because the instructions are quite lame and I find it weird to just mix everything together and not know what exactly I put on my face. So I'm really sure I will try this to finally use up the product!
My routine is that I mix some L-ascorbic acid powder with 3.5 glycolic acid toner (both from The Ordinary), and use it as a chemical exfoliant once a week. This way, I get the right pH and always use it right away. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
@@zoezzzarko1117 I think there is a small spoon that comes with the vitamin C powder - I use a bit less than a full one. Vitamin C can sting too so don't go overboard with it (half a spoon should be enough). I mix the powder with a little toner in a plastic measurement cup by swirling it around until the powder and toner are mixed. Then I apply to my face with my hands. You don't need much toner, I often find myself taking too much, you don't need a lot to wet your entire face... good luck and let me know how it goes!
One thing I've noticed about Skinceuticals and the C E ferulic dupes out there is they use a hefty amount of ethoxydiglycol (aka Transcutol), probably needed for the ferulic acid to dissolve but I wonder if the vitamin C will penetrate nearly as well without it.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! I've just produced the 2nd batch for myself, my skin loves it and applying SPF after this serum goes amazingly smoothly!
This works for my rosacea skin. Skinceuticals and Timeless were a big ouch after a few weeks. I don't know if it's the preservative, the Vit. E or the Ferulic that causes a flare. Ty, Lab Muffin!!

Is it possible I wonder to do weekly but mix with ordinary resveratrol and ferulic acid water baking soda ? O weekly base as you described ? Or I am playing with flame 🔥?
Since this is meant to be made on a weekly basis, I don't think it's necessary. Storing in the fridge will extend the length of time before oxidizing and microbe growth. If you live in a particularly hot place or plan to travel, a fridge might be needed.

I'm making my own cosmetics for years, it's so much fun :) I always have fresh bottle of vitamin C in my fridge. My favourite and proven formula is 15% vitamin C serum with ascorbic acid, ferulic acid, vitamin E and some humectants. I cannot imagine my routine without vitamin C serum and was quite suprised when I saw Dr Dray's video about vitamin C in cosmetics. She claimed that it doesn't have any effects on skin and there are no scientific research to prove it's effectiveness in treating skin ageing, hyperpigmentation etc.
@@tamacc6820 It's very easy:) I dissolve ascorbic acid in some low-pH hydrolate (now I use orange blossom hydrolate, it has pH about 3.5) mixed with propanediol and ethanol - it makes dissolving easier. In other beaker I dissolve ferulic acid in ethanol (I don't have ferulic acid solution, only pure ferulic acid powder). I add ferulic acid dissolved in ethanol to the beaker with ascorbic acid and mix them. Then I add hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and preservative. I don't add any emulsifier which will mix vitamin E with the rest, so before use I have to shake the bottle. If you want you can modify the formulation by adding some more hydrating ingredients - panthenol, sorbitol, etc. If you want exact recipe with grams I can share :) If you have access to online shops selling raw cosmetics ingredients, DIY vitamin C serum is very easy and budget-friendly option. And it's so much fun :)

I would prefer to premix the 4 parts by weight solid free acid with 1 part by weight solid sodium ascorbate. (Make sure the sodium ascorbate you bought has a VC to sodium ratio reflective of the pure solid: 175:23) That way we can simply dissolve the mix in however much DI water we want and the pH shouldn’t vary by much, and if pH is off significantly, probably the free acid is bad anyways. Aliquoting small portions of the solid in ziplock bags to the freezer would probably help? My lab only worked with sodium ascorbate which was stable for years. Didn't expect vitamin C serum is literally pHed ascorbic acid lol!

@@Selinnaguz hi I’m not a chemist but a medical doctor, I’ll try to answer your questions as much as I can. 1. You cant make vitamin c serum last longer by yourself. Only one brand, skinceuticals, have made that formula and also patented it so no other brands make that exact serum. Also store bought serums don’t last that long. You just don’t know they dont. They also degrade in time. I don’t know the exact time but it’s probably the same as told here, maybe 2 to 3 weeks. So I don’t buy it from a store. I make it. I suggest you to do the same. Don’t waste your money on store brands. They dont do anything. 2. I don’t use baking soda or any buffer. I just use water and ascorbic acid powder. 10% of 20 ml is 2 ml. The % of a serum is per weight (w/w)! So you would have to solve the equation [x/(weight of the serum without LAA+x)]=0.1 where x is the LAA needed in grams and 0.1 is the % of vitc that you aim to make. Adding baking soda will cause a chemical reaction and reduce the effectiveness of the serum

I didn't want to end up paying a bomb / buying a vit c that doesn't work. This is a life saver! Been following you since you started, thank you so so much!
I made mine each time I use it . I use ordinary vit c powder which is super fine and dissolves easily . I mix a tiny spoonful with the spoon provided with a bit of toner and pat on my skin, Been doing that for a few years and love the results
I studied as a chemical technician in college. I'm happy to find someone who actually knows science spreading accurate information. Some influences make me roll my eyes. Not saying I know everything, but some of the "hacks" I see posted are mind boggling.
Thanks for this! I have been making this for months now. I just spray it all over my arms and face. Even with sensitive skin I can use it every other day. Love that this is actually easy and potentially better than store bought.
Have you seen any benefits from using this serum?
Here's the formula (please correct me if I'm wrong)
I like her videos, but I had to watch this a couple of times because formula examples were not well explained. The only example for calculating the ratios went by very quickly.
Here ya go -
20 ml of 10% L-ascorbic acid serum:
20 ml distilled water (RO is about the same)
2 grams ascorbic acid (approx 1/3 tsp)
Mix until fully dissolved
Pinch(s) of baking soda to reach 3-4 pH
Imperial measurements
1 oz of 10% LAA serum:
1 oz distilled or RO water
3 grams ascorbic acid (approx 1/2 tsp)
Mix until fully dissolved
Pinch(s) baking soda to reach 3-4 pH
Multiply as needed.
(Spring and well water contains minerals too.)
👍 ❤️

OMG this is amazing. Thank you. I've been thinking of trying vitamin C and this is a great, affordable option.

Most derms I've talked to seem to agree the Skin Ceuticals one is the best. For that price, though...I think I'll do the DIY instead. Thank you!
I just use your cheat sheet aka mix a pinch of vit c powder in my hyaluronic acid toner every day. Trust me it works better than pricey brands 🤩🤩🤩
Where did you find vitamin c powder?

After 3 days the serum became clear again.
this is a GAME CHANGER considering how expensive C serum is!!
YES please!!!
I’d only do it with a dermatologist or esthetician... Same with waxing or any treatments like that.
I would love that too ! I have no doubt that most people can do it safely without being an esthetician, but you'd need to have all the correct info about it. Here are some useful documents :

Ooo have you ph tested this? Going to try this combo !
How’s it working out for you?
If you want a very blendable, lipid vitamin C which is stable and non irritating get tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate at Lotioncrafter. I’ve used it for years.
How much glycerin do you add to the recipe?
I was thinking of adding ALA for the viscosity. I wonder if it would work with Vitamin C.

This is so down to earth, logical and enjoyable! And also reminds me a little of chemistry class haha! So happy to have found you, thank you so much!
So, while it isn't a huge inconvenience it is a little bit annoying and does complicate the process more.
wooo that went mostly over my head! But I have just made my first 10ml vit c serum and I feel proud!

My routine is that I mix some L-ascorbic acid powder with 3.5 glycolic acid toner (both from The Ordinary), and use it as a chemical exfoliant once a week. This way, I get the right pH and always use it right away. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
Do you rinse it off... or leave it on? 😲
Also... does it burn at all?
@@zoezzzarko1117 I leave it on for 5-10 minutes and then I apply moisturizer without washing it off. And yes, it burns!
@@deakeller ha ok !! Thank youuuuuuuuu for the info !!
@@deakeller about how much of the vit c do you add to about how much toner (so I don't burn my face off 🤣)
@@zoezzzarko1117 I think there is a small spoon that comes with the vitamin C powder - I use a bit less than a full one.

Lauri, so how do you make your Vitamin C? Could you share with us please?
Secondly would you be able to tell me how much ascorbic acid, water and baking soda I need a 30ml bottle or could you tell me how can I work it out.
Can i use aloe vera gel instead of Baking soda? Thank you so much, really appreciate it❤️❤️
I would prefer to premix the 4 parts by weight solid free acid with 1 part by weight solid sodium ascorbate.

You will need 6 grams of ascorbic acid powder for 30 mls of water to make %20 concentration of vitamin c serum.
