I did my balcony a couple years ago in 45m EPDM pond liner (30x12). I used adhesive caulking in between the through's and it helped tremendously with keeping them straight from gravity. Mine will last longer than I will.
I wondered is there a general formula for cutting up the bladders. One end/ side is narrower than the opposite end /side. 14” at the narrower and 24” at the fifer end ? I am going to say this is for joists that are 12” on center ! Yes !?
Great work. Building a deck by myself and am doing the same waterproofing system. Did use stainless staples on the epdm? My deck frame is 42' 5.5" wide. 28 feet of that is 20 feet deep and 14 feet is 12 feet deep. Pretty proud of it. Waterproofing to use underneath as a shed for yard equipment. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.
@thebedfords thanks for the reply. Built a deck before but never with the waterproofing. Dr.Decks used the same system but looked like he used caulk on top of the staples. Thought that might have been overkill if you use ss or galvanized staples with the gtape. Thanks again for the videos. I keep watching them again because my deck is taking so long to build because its just me. First summer was footings, im almost done framing. Next year will be composite decking
Dude. That's sick. probably way overkill, unless there's a lot of blowing rain there, or if the porch roof is just super tall, BUT awesome. This is the kind of stuff that really sets people apart. Roughly what did it cost per sqft if you can remember?
You’ll see if you keep watching (and I think I actually spoke about it in a later video). Two sides of the roof are about 8’ high, but the gable end is higher because of the open truss design. A large percentage of the deck definitely gets quite wet during the rain, depending on how windy it is. But it’s also for when you want to rinse off or power wash the deck. I don’t remember how much it cost, but it wasn’t that much. Material costs, and I think it was about 1.5 days for two people. I know that’s probably not super helpful, but it’s the best I can do :)
Never heard of water proofing the deck.. learned something new! But a question, 6:16 all the posts are touching the ground, will it pass the inspection? Thank you.
So for the size of this deck, the building inspector required extra solid footings. I think I showed them being poured in the first video, but might not have shown them after that. The holes were dug 20” across both sides, and I believe 22-24 inches deep. I can’t remember exactly. Then we poured 8” deep footings in the bottom of the hole. It was a total of 15 holes, and required about 3500 pounds of concrete. The holes are then back filled, which isn’t an issue because the posts themselves are rated for ground contact, unlike most treated 2x framing material. Pretty much all posts will be treated for ground contact.
My attached deck project is basically a rectangular 32’ wide x 15’ deep/projection from the ledger. The box’ is treated 2x12’s 12” on center attached to concrete filled sonotubes by U-brackets. Would you recommend a center supporting beam/girder? The deck is open with the exception of a 10’x12’ cedar framed, metal roof canopy which will be reinforced with tailored’ blocking. Thnx for your video and thnx in advance for your take
Great video. Just found your channel. Building my deck myself with drainage like this video. Ever have trouble with the joist not touching the beam (beam nearest the house) where the joist crowns? I thought there might be 2 separate joists but looks like you ran 1 joist over 2 beams
Not very often. We grade/sort our joists by size, so that greatly reduces the chances of it happening. But if it does, I just use a composite shim to make up the difference. Thanks for watching, and I’m glad you enjoyed it!
love that water proofing method, can you share the details on the name of the product used ? is it just like a shower pan rubberized liner or made specifically for decks ?
I need to finish editing it. I took a bit of a break from making videos, because it had started feeling like something I HAD to do, not something I WANTED to do. But I’m ready to get back into it now, so I will do my best to get part 3 done soon.
I’m not sure exactly how much it costs. I’m not involved in the estimating/financial side of our business, but I would guess that it was around that or maybe even a little less.
It doesn’t really. But those are small areas, and once they collect enough water, it would either run off the edge of the deck or into the trough next to it. Still keeps the framing dry, along with everything under the deck.
My recollection is that we cut the piece 18” wide at the “top” & 24” wide at the “bottom”. I think we cut a couple small scrap pieces first to make sure that change from almost no sag to significant sag would do the job.
This deck is the last time we've used this system (just because we haven't done a project like this recently), and it's been long enough I don't remember exactly which tape we used. I'm pretty sure we used whatever @drdecks suggested. You may be able to find out from a video on his channel.
What you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this page is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
@@thebedfords I love the sideways! Sad that there’s always one person that never learned if you can’t say something nice keep it too yourself. 😊. Thanks for a great video. We just found your videos today while searching for how to waterproof the underside of a deck. We’ve watched a bunch of waterproof videos and we think your system is the one we’ll go with. The area under our deck is over about 1/2 of our garage. What we originally did about 12 years ago is failing. We ended up with a bit (ok way more than a bit) of water in the garage this past March between snow and rain. Thanks again. Looking forward to watching your other videos.
I'll do my best. But since this is my job, and I'm not getting paid to make these videos on my own personal channel, I try to limit the amount of time I spend filming while I'm on the clock. I often did the update/progress report at the beginning or end of the day, when I'm not on the clock.

How do you waterproof the railing posts going through the EDPM? It looks like just the tape.

You’d have to double check the building code, but that joist span should be more than fine.

I also do grading, but on occasion shimming or planing is necessary.

Thanks very much. This whole project was around 80k

It’s just EPDM rubber for roofing. We get it from a local building supplier. I believe it was a 10’x50’ roll, 60 mil thick.

Did I miss it in here, how do you plan your cut for the membrane to get the right sag? Start at the oc width then add 50% for the end of the trough?
