“The Great Hack”: Big Data Firms Helped Sway the 2016 Election. Could It Happen Again in 2020?

  • The documentary “The Great Hack,” which was shortlisted from the Oscars, explores how the data firm Cambridge Analytica came to symbolize the dark side of social media in the wake of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Cambridge Analytica collapsed in May 2018 after The Observer newspaper revealed the company had harvested some 87 million Facebook profiles without the users’ knowledge or consent. Cambridge Analytica then used the data to sway voters to support President Trump during the 2016 campaign. We speak with “The Great Hack” co-directors Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim, as well as Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Brittany Kaiser.

I watched Control Room. I often think of it when things happen in our foreign policy such as what just happened. I remember an Al Jazera reporter living through the attack on Bagdad saying he believed in the American people, that they would stop the abuses of their government. (something like that) My mind wonders to a non-US citizen expressing that undeserved trust in us and what he thinks now.

Marshall Kinnaird How funny. You should look at the video of all his mourners. You do realize that ISIS is having the real celebrations of his death, right? He defeated ISIS in Syria and Iraq saving he Christians and Shiites. Our country should be so proud, once again protecting ISIS.

A lot of us did after 2016, but most knowingly stayed on. That's why Fuckerberg continues to evade. We need another boycott campaign ..and then another one. Those of us who reached adulthood before FB, know how to live without FB/Instagram etc, and should be leading on this issue. Yet otherwise ethical conscientious people refuse to leave -- because they've become socially dependent on it. It's pathetic that all these people are basically being held hostage by each other to this insane platform run by a guy who's only skill was coding -- someone who should have -- at the very least -- a broad liberal arts background, including anthropology, to qualify for such global social power.

Most intelligence agencies that have a bit of self-respect and dignity has the same. Russian, American, British, Chinese, French, Israeli, Japense, you can continue the list for as long as you want.

i think it deserves mentioning that this is a docudrama more than a documentary. just look at the part where the guy asks his class if anyone gets the feeling their phone has been listening to them and everyone raises their hand. you really think that was an authentic moment? no one was swayed by their being a film crew in the classroom? no one asked what's going on and got an answer that may have swayed how they behaved? i wish we had more very genuine people in the media, but its almost impossible to make it through even journalism school if you aren't great at playing the game or just very naive.

Went to see a show last night in Milwaukee at the brand new Fiserve arena. It was the first time I had been to a "phone only" event where you could not use a printed ticket for entry. Worked pretty slick, but that's the seduction of going all digital; what you get in convenience, the marketers get back way more in information about you.

This story is a big nothing burger. Micro targeting based on online activities is nothing new or to be scared of. The only solution is to have 1st amendment applied to social media so all ideas can ne heard. Then encourage people to find multiple sources for balanced news. Online persuasion campaigns are just part of modern life and all sides do this now. Pearl clutching is so unnecessary and insincere.

If all people had strong critical thinking skills, this wouldn't be a threat. However, in this world, it is.
