    Aloha from Atlanta. I have been following this channel for the last month - thanks for your great updates! It was my family's great privilege to visit Kapoho near Champagne Ponds this time last year and had a wonderful time. It is my hope that Pele's visit to this beautiful land is merciful and that we may be able to visit our new friends there again soon.

    If the house and property are covered with lava.... does the home owner still own the property ? Still had to keep paying for it ? Has the option to build on it ? It's so sad.. I'm in oregon but spent 2 yrs in Hawaii on us army duty.

      Yes the homeowner still owns the property after the disaster, and they are still responsible for paying any outstanding loans. Hopefully they had insurance to cover the loss

      Craig Martin - Normally, here as it is there on the mainland, one condition of receiving a loan is to have insurance. Even buying a car, it's that way if it's financed. If the place is paid off, though, they're just out of luck, if no insurance. You can't build on freshly flowed lava.

      Laura Barber - it blows inland because we have the trade winds back here, and those always blow toward land, away from the ocean. Hopefully the people there are okay. As she mentioned, with the winds blowing the laze will dissipate faster, than if there was no wind.

    • @Dt0x75
      @Dt0x75 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea the crater floor has subsided 5' since this started so the surrounding earth will crack as it deflates and deforms. The cracks inside the crater will vent steam and SO2 gas.

    To send cartoon lava 220' high.
    What kind of pressure is that.
    How much lava per hour or minute flows out at that height.
    What is the width.
    Does just the fountains feed the flow or the crack of the whole fissure.
    Meaning fissure have or create tributaries within say a football field of the fissure which is just more of the same fissure.
    Or fissures and leaks in the cracks aren't discernable therefore it's just a crack.
    At what height is it called a fissure.
    Are there other names for different heights or widths but fissure is just the go-to for the masses?
    😐

      Jeff Bingaman They speak in layman's terms to explain to the general public what's going on. Not being a smartass here: take a geology class at your local community college. It helps tremendously in understanding what is being said. Currently a class is less than $400 without financial aid and don't worry about your age. I'm in my early 40s, am a freshman and not the only old fart in most of my classes. Never too old.

    • @Bozbaby103
      @Bozbaby103 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll try to answer your questions: I don't know what pressures cause the height, but I do know that mineral composition of the lava, the amount of dissolved gases within the lava, the sustained heat and other factors affect the fountain, flow rivers and distance. The geologists are trying to figure out why the volcano chose to erupt where it did and when it did. From what I understand not much was happening geologically before the fissures started appearing. This is the first Kilauea eruption with the technology we have today, so scientists are learning at the same time they are informing/educating. Kilauea is different than many volcanoes out there. The magma system under the Big Island's crust is documented, but the scientists are now getting a first-hand look at it.
      Again, I suggest a class on geology/volcanology or watch every single geology/volcano documentary available. It will help.

    Does anyone know... It seems there is in the "Ring of Fire" an increase in volcanic activity that is not at all on the average, a marked increase. Is with the sea level rising and the increase of hydrostatic pressure of more ocean water pressing on the oceanic crust causing more earthquake and volcanic activity along the tectonic plates of the world? I read that, in proportionate comparison, the earth's crust is as thin as the skin of an apple is to the rest of an apple.

    So how much of a cubic mile of lava has come out of the earth this last 30 days? .1? .25?

    • @wwoods66
      @wwoods66 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      One source: "And active fissures are spitting out an incredible 40 to 60 cubic feet of lava per second." www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38330630/of-all-the-magma-in-kilaueas-summit-just-about-2-has-erupted-in-lower-puna
      50 ft3/s * 86400 s/day * 30 days = 130 e6 ft3
      1 mi3 ~ 150 e9 ft3
      So, something like 1/1000th of a cubic mile?

    • @Bozbaby103
      @Bozbaby103 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Keith Purdue No, Hawaii is a product of a hotspot, meaning a plume of magma from the mantle found a weakness in the Earth's crust and popped its way out, in this case in the middle of the Pacific plate and not on or near a plate boundary. The magma/lava that it contains is a very fluid rock known as basalt. It doesn't trap dissolved gases well, thus the boiling pot effect of the lava fountains and fissures. These volcanoes are shield volcanoes, which are relatively safe and predictable, with few explosive eruptions, minimal ash clouds and fluid lava.
      Fuego in Guatemala was formed because the Cocos plate is being pushed down under the North American and Caribbean plates into the mantle (subduction), causing the Cocos plate to melt. Some of the melted rock makes it back up to the surface, but in the form of a composite volcano. These are the scary, explosive, run-for-your-lives volcanoes, with pyroclastic flows, lahars, thick lava and ash clouds from hell. The magma/lava has different minerals and properties than the fluid lava of Hawaii. These are the suckers that kill people. Vesuvius, St Helens and Pinatubo are some of the well-known composite volcano eruptions. Most of the Ring of Fire volcanoes are this type of volcano and should be taken seriously. I'm not saying Kilauea and other hotspot volcanoes are safe and aren't killers, but they aren't in the same ballpark as composites.
      I hope this info helps.

      Hermetic Principle of Correspondence....everything is connected. It is not even logical to believe the escalating volcanic activity happening around the planet it not connected, however seems modern sciencing has now resorted to magical thinking to explain these eruptions happening everywhere and would have us believe it's all just a "spooky coincidence"....funny how they get to change the rules when it suits them.

    • @ageofatheism6638
      @ageofatheism6638 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thyalwaysseek
      They happen all the time it's just that now with the instant news flows it seems like it's happening more . There are approximately 20 volcanic eruptions happening at once around the world at any given moment. There is no such thing as supernatural, just childish wishful thinking!

    • @Thyalwaysseek
      @Thyalwaysseek 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @ Age of atheism
      Actually there is a marked escalation of volcanic activity globally, this is actually quite easily verified with multiple sources if you take the time to inform yourself. As for an atheist trying to school me on any subject, thanks but you are no different to a religious person, you just have a different BELIEF ;)

    It is strange to look at something that is so destructive and can ruin so many people's lives yeah in the same instance it's incredibly beautiful and absolutely unbelievable to watch the true power of our home that we live on some people may not understand this kind of feeling but if you speak to the tree people at the island they would tell you the same they know they live in an area that is a living breathing part of the planet I must admit the other day I saw a report where are a lady I don't know what country she actually came from but she was most definitely not an original Hawaiian born person and she was saying how the Press are taking this all out of proportion and it's damaging their business because people aren't coming to see the island and I was thinking to myself you've obviously never in your life learnt or seen anything to do with the true power of a volcano because if that volcano does go the pirate plastic cloud that would come down from it would wipe out and destroy so much more then what we're seeing that she referred to as a small piece of the island the woman stupid is not affecting a small piece of the island the big Island is it a large area with a lot of people and a lot of people's livelihoods that this is going through uncontrolled there was an interview with a Hawaiian fella and he said himself I've lived here all my life is said we pray to the gods at the volcano and he said yes our homes are being destroyed but this has happened before and we rebuild he said the beauty of this island is the fact that it is alive and when you live here you can actually feel like you are alive and apart of the Earth where is if you travel to other areas with in the States you said you feel nothing of the Land and that left me thinking a lot
    I hope that no one else gets hurt and I hope the volcano does Kwai and down and does not erupt good luck to all of the people out there be safe

    Actually, if you don't have to be in the area of an active volcano eruption, stay far away from it.
