    Spent one of our most memorable vacations in a cottage on Waiopae. If you haven't been, this is one of the most lush and beautiful areas of Hawaii. Snorkeling in Kapoho Tide Pools was amazing. This is heartbreaking to watch. Thoughts and prayers for all those adventurous souls who made their homes in this little slice of paradise.

    I feel our County officials have done a terrific job handling this situation. Not so sure about Mayor Kim, but he did come out to Pahoa to speak with the people.

    • @alixr5926
      @alixr5926 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ladykiri -- I've been really impressed with your county officials. The mayor said something I really liked (though other officials seemed surprised by it, so maybe it was a sudden idea he had that he hadn't discussed with anyone) -- he was talking about getting together quickly, pushing permits through, and building micro emergency housing for the people who have no place to return to and no other options, something similar to what was done in Hilo for tsunami victims -- he said if the people in charge could do it then, surely they could do it now. That sounded very sensible to me; you want to get those people out of temporary shelters as soon as possible. Even a tiny, private place is better than a temporary shelter.

    It would be helpful if those that can afford own a caravan, it takes the pressure off the temporary housing and allows some degree of privacy and freedom. Living on a volcanic island one would think having a caravan is a good idea for evacuation purposes.

      You know, with tourism down, I'd expect some local hotels or resorts to put up some of the people at least for a shower and breakfast or, you know, just some place to be able to rest. I realize everyone will be hit by the economy, but giving to the community in need may pay off in the long run. I hope that'll be news in the near future.

    So this leads to an interesting question. In some parts of the world, the property line ends 'at the water's edge'. If you live in Kapoho Bay on the side of the flow where it hits the water, have you just gained a few hundred more yards of property?

    What about a line graph showing the lava flows and their daily volume?
    I know I'd get a good overview of the flow that way.
    The lava flows seem to me, to be increasing in large jumps, and fissure
    8 appears to be in the heart of the flow.

    • @anxioussmurf2057
      @anxioussmurf2057 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Allen Burt I think it would be near impossible to measure the actual volume of lava flowing. The only way to measure accurately is by land coverage, which is currently sitting at 5,000 acres

    Due to the condition getting worse and no end in sight "Yet". It would be best if they allowed the Hawaiian citizens to start using hotels as apartment complexes instead of them remaining in a shelter. This can be done by giving people Rooms & normal rules allowing employees to keep the rooms clean and the residents doing their part to keep things well intact Etc in the hotels. Government assistance can help those whose jobs are under lava Gov pay for their room until they can find a new employment. Anyone with a disability check can pay reduced rates. Same with Senior residence. For those residents whose jobs have remained safely intact can continue to pay on their own for the room. During these difficult times Hotels can work something out with both the public and the government on an affordable monthly rent plan. This would also help with lack of terrorism during this time. Now if only my suggestion can be implemented into helping the Hawaiian citizens so they can be in a more comfortable setting during these extremely difficult times. 💖 if I remember correctly USGS stated this is only affected 1% of the island. So this idea could be workable! And continue to keep an eye on the lava. In case further evacuation would be needed. The shelter should be there for the public until their needs are met and a more comfortable and reasonable accommodations can be made. Including remaining pet friendly!. In all honesty these people can't be expected to live in the shelters.
    And those willing to help others move any livestock to a safer location because helping the livestock stay safe is important on so many levels it's important.

      vlad the lad LMFAO. Didn't know that an eight season long TV show, with thirteen forty minute episodes per season, wouldn't be called a series. I guess the liberty of using a diverse vocabulary is too tough for me to understand! Gee whiz, what do you call a sequence of planned and timed release of media, whether it be television, literature, poetry, video games, or films? Oh, right...

    I have a question.. when the lava hits the ocean, does the motion stop at a certain degree and cool, then the lava behind it would layer itself on top of first layer. then mixed w ocean temp cool then stop moving forward, then next layer.. cont cont. so question is how tall of a layers would it take, for the lava flow start turning down the coast ( beach) instead of going over the highest layers of cooled lava in the ocean?

    • @jawasstolemydroid4930
      @jawasstolemydroid4930 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not an expert, but from what I've seen/read the lava should keep flowing in the same spot unless the slump breaks. If that "shelf-like" piece falls off, then the lava may change direction. As for how fast it cools, there are all kinds of articles about this if you search Google.

    • @anxioussmurf2057
      @anxioussmurf2057 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're correct about it layering. The way I see it, it will start forming into a wall as the layers get higher, meaning the lava will start backing up. It may be held on land by the wall and solidify there, or it may start a new route, running along the side of the wall along the coast

    • @mrth0nymous
      @mrth0nymous 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually the lava forms Deltas that will continue to expand until there is not enough underlying support hold the delta up. At that point the Delta will break off and collapse down to the sea floor. In this case Kapoho bay looks to be fairly shallow and my armchair geologist view is that the bay will fill up completely and that area will not break off.

    Is there any possibility of controlling some lava flows
    by building up berms of ground up lava cinders?
    Preventing or stopping a small lava flow split might be
    better than letting it split. I don't pretend to know
    how feasible or dangerous such work might be.

    • @nunyabidness8607
      @nunyabidness8607 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer has two parts in limited capacity some power poles etc have been saved in past flows by thermally wrapping and encasing in lava rock. But, lava defies gravity, it can flow quickly but it can bake up and over high ground and barriers from the underside like a muffin and the volumes are totally unpredictable, ultimately Pele rains supreme and we just need to let her do her thing.

      They’re flying everyday to monitor the flow. 06:30 the press is at the scene (in helicopters) along with the USGS, Civil Defense and county fire. They fly all daylight hrs to monitor the flow from the vent to the ocean entry.
      Flows can break out at any moment, the bank of the flow can collapse and send lava in another direction, perched ponds can overflow, these are major threats.

      @DJ RAZORDGE OF REVELATOR -- I measured it quickly in Google Maps -- the main lobe is roughly 12.4 km (7.7 miles) from the approximate fissure 8 start going around the top of PGV, top of Kapoho crater then turning right down to Kapoho Bay. I am not exactly sure about where on fissure 8 the fountain is, but it's no more than 500m downstream, I think, somewhere around Leilani/Luana.

      @10JAQK -- No word because nothing new happened (not since the storage shed and drilling rig were destroyed). There's a video around from a couple days ago of a short overflight. It seems almost surrounded by lava but currently the fissures south of it are inactive, and fissure 8 is channeling lava past it at this point (that can of course change if the lava river breaks through its "levee". The USGS maps also show the area still clear.

    How come no one is working with the government to pay for hotel rooms for these people. I would think if an elected person work 24/7 writing calling congress senate to get federal money asap to put people in hotels. WTF have every citizen of the USA in Hawaii call Washington multiple times a day to complain, send emails, put it in writing send them a tweet do every type of communication to ask for help. Come on people. You have no tourists so work out a hotel rate for government aide to put Hawaii citizens in those rooms. HELLO!! Pluck those nose hairs.

    The Goddess Pele is watching the government of Hawaii to see how it treats her people. She say's ... "You care for my people I've displaced, and you treat all with the same justice or I will reap vengeance, and destruction on you the likes you have never seen..." I think she means "If the poor have to pay a fine to be rescued, so should the rich."

      Regardless of who lived on this land, their homes would have been covered with lava and destroyed. Living beside an active volcano is a bad decision. It's a nice place to visit, but people shouldn't live there (whether they're rich or not).

      Kahtel 187 I agree 100%. I'm from the land myself. Born living off the land (hunting and fishing) and most important respect the land. The land is us. However as far as for profit, this did not start today, this started way back, when we sold out. Thats the sad part. The for profit came with, the sugar cane and pineapple. Then evolved to tourist. Very sad. I'd rather go back to just hunting and fishing, the simple life. But even that, almost no mo fish. Pretty soon no mo land. To the others, You know the other sad part, people who built in these areas knew the risk. So don't blame just the government.

    • @Niven42
      @Niven42 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why would you evacuate the whole island? It's not a very small place - 93 miles across, with a mountain peak in the center that reaches almost 14,000 feet (which is NOT Kilauea Crater). It's bigger than Massachusetts. The majority of the island probably won't be affected much at all. But if you're in the immediate area of Kilauea, then yes - there are hazards.

      Carlene Dickinson This is a tragedy for the locals, but its also part of the lifestyle there, lava flows are nothing new, just where they go is new. Nobody that lives on Hawaii island is that surprised, this is expected eventually, they just hope not in their lifetime(s), so after a month of reporting every day basically the same thing, he’s going to try to give it a positive bent.

    It’s easy to see in this materialistic world how individuals could define themselves according to what they possess. But when you loose everything,well,that is when we ask the important questions. Christianity says we are ..” created in His image.” That is to see ourselves not as a material, but as a singular beloved creation. All creation,testifies that God exists. I pray that you will read The New Testament starting in the Book of John. You will understand how precious & beloved you are & the sacrifice of Jesus,God’s Son.

Thank you for helping to bring it back to the front for me. I sat down with my kids tonight and we talked about The Bible and His word and what is going on in the world and other people's lives. It's the first time we clasped hands and prayed together, for a good 8 months anyway. I don't want to get so sidetracked by nonsense that it takes a tragedy or something to open my bible or talk to my kids. Thank you. And thank you Heavenly Father.

      Do not pick and choose . Don't try to rationalize. The basic principles of most religions are good rules to live by...if everyone did. They all claim one almighty being that created and will save them. Yeah and they're the ones on roofs signaling for help because of flooding they were warned about days in advance. Or in a grassy field with rabbits in cages, please save me now... cuz god or pele or the wicked witch of the north is fixing to fry my ass up.

      I feel what she is trying to say is that the experts know how deadly the laze was going to be once it hit the ocean and they kept that area as a voluntary evacuation. The mandatory evacuation is back up at Leilani Estate. For voluntary evacuation there won’t be citations for not leaving yet look at the laze! That area should have been evacuated no matter what!! It’s insane. Hydrochloric acid but the people were under a voluntary evacuation...I don’t comprehend that at all. The experts think because they door knocked and informed people the experts have covered their legality. It doesn’t make sense now the whole world can see the wind blowing that deadly laze back onto the voluntary evacuation area 🙁.
