Blue collar trash red wine. (It's predictable.)

  • In the UK the standard of imported wine is generally very variable. We pay a premium price for random bottles that may taste nice or may be so bad they have to be poured down the sink.
After a particularly horrible bottle of red wine (A bottle of the same wine bought a week earlier had been fine) I decided to analyse the taste and determine if I could fake the red wine experience.
Try it yourself and let me know what you think in the comments.

The crappy wine had to become commonplace before the cranberry juice looked like a good alternative! To be fair you can buy decent wine in supermarkets, but it's generally not the stuff that gets discounted.

Add some ice cubes and a squeeze of lime, and you, my friend, have yourself a Cape Codder. I'm fortunate enough to have been a Restaurateur and Bartender near Wine Country, over the past 20 years, so I've got a little knowledge. I couldn't sell that as a Wine experience, but on a warm sunny day, serve that up as a cocktail, you got gold in your hands... that's if you add the ice.

This very afternoon, at a non-profit agency near Ithaca New York, there was a long discussion among Social Work counselors about the correct amount of Vodka to add to cranberry juice (Ocean Spray). The women in their early twenties seemed to agree that three shots of vodka was the desired amount. I'm not sure how sound or scientific their reasoning was.

240ml of cranberry juice would get about 88ml of vodka and be called a Cape Cod. I like them in the summer, a rather refreshing drink served over ice. A nice change from my usual Gin & Tonic.

That may be so, but in the US they give us the shit that cannot be sold in Europe and other places, because our FDA (food & drug administration) is so lax and crappy. Our extra virgin olive oil (depends on the brand I guess) might not even be up to snuff to sell as normal olive oil in Europe, so I cannot imagine that liquors are more strenuously judged.

    • @Nyiddle
      @Nyiddle 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I wasn't commenting on the quality of wine in general, I was just saying that bad wine or not, cranberry juice and vodka is not analogous to the flavor of any wine.
Grape juice or blueberry juice (or some blend of the two) would be a much better fit.

Spaniard here. It is false that leftovers is packaged and sent to other countries, if anything just the opposite. Best quality wines are shipped to be sold in other countries. But, here comes the catch, at a higher, much much higher price. Here we can find in any supermarket reasonable quality wines for 10$, and acquired directly from manufacturer at much lower prices. Same wine I've seen in London, or in NY at 4x, 5x price. above 40$ in spain you fine extraordinary wines. And yes, it's unique characteristics can't be replaced. Here we distinguish between different flavors or qualities, and we drink different wines for everyday lunch, special occasion, and celebration. The variety possible with just the same ingredients and type of grape is so wide, that with a very low budget you could drink a different wine everyday for a year. At least here, don't be fooled by the price of the bottle. A good wine is what you enjoy. pricing differs not only because of quality, but because there factors as the amount of wine available that year. So you could find expensive bottles that test not that good for that price, just because that year weren't many produced.

I'm a big red vino consumer, and not a big spender when I do(15 bucks is expensive for me). I have to respectfully disagree on cranberry and vodka tasting like red wine, unless you're speaking of MD20/20 or Boone's Farm. The vast amount of vineyards here could also be why we have so much good cheap wine.
I freeze distilled (idea gleaned from BCdc) a bottle of crappy cabernet, and it changed it night and day. Blew me away how good it became.

My 8th grade science teacher had us do that as an experiment in 1978... put grape juice, sugar and yeast in a bottle, topped it with a balloon. The balloon expanded while the yeast was doing the fermenting because of the gases it gave off... when the balloon went back to normal, it was done - and we drank it in Dixie cups.
No way an 8th grade public school teacher would be able to teach you to make wine (and let you drink it!) today.

Vodka Cranberry tastes nothing like red wine. This video makes me think that you've never drank a semi-good red wine. Try a more expensive Mediterranean red wine, maybe from an organic food store. I usually pay €10 or more for a bottle and I never got anything that I'd call "impotable swill".
If I wanted to get hammered I'd always choose vodka cranberry over the red wine because a) v.c. is much more efficient and b) the sulphites in red wine give me headaches, among other less pleasurable bodily dysfunctions.
In other words: Vodka cranberry is a terrific way to get absolutely wankered, but red wine can be absolutely gorgeous.

You can get concentrated grape juice for wine making in wilko's... it's very sweet of course, but if you treat it like a cordial, top it up with the cranberry for the tartness and tannin, and add the vodka as you did, I reckon it'll be pretty good!

Vodka cran is infinitely preferable to red wine for me, since most reds give me an instant headache. And as vodka is just my go-to alcohol of choice anyway, I've found lots of ways to enjoy it. Lately I've been making liqueurs by filling a half gallon mason jar about 3/4 up with fruit, and then up to the top with vodka. Add in a few strips of lemon rind and let it steep for 6 months. Then you mash your fruit, strain it, add 1/3 cup sugar per quart and put it back on the shelf for a week or two until the sugar is dissolved. Makes for great dessert alcohol. So far I've used elderberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Next year I hope to have blackberries and a plum tree to try it with as well.

Had a buddy who used to make his own wine from Welch's frozen grape juice and his own recipe, it was quite good, sadly he never gave me the recipe and has been dead now these past twenty years. He was a HUGE man, in fact if you look in the dictionary under giant, his photo pops up. Nearly 7 feet tall, and weighing in at around 400 pounds, his wife was but five 9 and 280, their daughter had her fathers height as well as weight, yes they are all gone now, his wife followed him a few months later, and his daughter died of loneliness. Sad case really but he did make some very fine wine.

I once used a vintners desert wine yeast to brew cranberry juice after dissolving a little sugar into it to help bolster the alcohol. It was slow to start fermenting and didn't ferment very fast, but the end result tasted really nice. I did the fermentation in a two-litre flagon with a rubber bung and air lock inserted into the top and for carbonation I put the flagon's lid on towards the end of the fermentation (purely estimated). To the flagon I put about a cup of raw sugar. It was fizzy, was quite pleasant and had a reasonable grog content :)

I used to love wine, especially red wine. I lived in Yorkshire for a while in the late 1980's, and near my home was a superb Italian owned pizza restaurant - their 'house red' was lovely, and I got 'heavily refreshed' on it many times. Several years later, though, I became allergic to sulphites, and found, to my dismay, that any wine (even in a spritzer), if drunk, reappeared very suddenly, from the orifice it had entered by. 🙁🙁🙁

A lot of wine is bloody awful and bloody expensive nowadays too. Normal price £10-12 / Special offer £5-6 which is higher than it used to be. Now I brew my own fruit wines which turn out to cost between £1.30-2.70 per bottle depending on the fruit used. They taste much nicer, are very predictable in flavour and have a higher alcohol content - which we all know is the most important factor! I might give this a go but try brewing it instead to see what happens.

This variable quality is also a problem here in Hungary. We produce a shitload of wine, but some parts of the country just not the wine drinking type, so most of the acceptable quality wine goes bad on the shelves (cooling anybody??). Where I live its okay, but where I go to Uni our traditional spirits is the favorit (very good tough, nice fruity flavors) so after like 6 bottles I gave up trying . I bough big 5l wine boxes from a special wine shop, and it was ok.

I like a nightcap of Ocean Spray lo-cal Cranberry Raspberry cocktail with vodka but I certainly don't put in two full shotglasses of vodka a night (can't afford it), it's more like maybe half a shot a night.
I can't say I've noticed that much of a similar taste to red wine, but maybe the raspberry is throwing the taste off. Also, I already said I prefer the low calorie version, simply because I prefer the taste without much added sugar, and it's the "cocktail" not the straight juice version, which may also be a factor in not making it taste that much like wine, although I wasn't really looking for it to taste like wine in the first place so lack of similarity is not a flaw.

In the UK many of the cheaper wines are actually grape juice concentrate with added yeast and alcohol and diluted with distilled water. So I'd say you made a fair approximation of that. :D

red wine in fridge beside coke to chill then mix in glass 50-50 to start then adjust percentage to fine tune to your taste.

Lol we have a term in the us here for the cheap/bottom shelf/gas station quality wine you mostly only buy if you're an alcoholic or bringing it to a party: 3 buck chuck lol

The UK really is severely lacking in the mid range affordable stuff when it comes to wines. I spent about a year there and the choices are atrocious. At least in America we get some pretty decent affordable mid range stuff from New York and California and even Spain in the $12 to $15 a bottle range..

you can put a crappy bottle of red into a blender for like 30 seconds to airate it and it's supposed to make it taste much better

Vodka and cranberry is my go to cocktail at any party, but I've never compared it to red wine though. It's certainly an interesting opinion.

I'm not a fan of any wine, can't stand the stuff, but I've always imagined cranberry juice to go nicely with vodka. I'll have to try it and see!

Super common in America. Not that I think I'm the first to point it out here, but there you go. Actually, that I can think of, the only reason people here buy cranberry juice are one of the following: UTI, geriatric, or to mix with vodka.

No vodka on hand here, but I'll have to suggest that cranberry juice might be something to try in our wine-making...

We are very much gouged for wine in this country. I've seen bottles of a perfectly nice Touraine or Sauvignon Blanc for sale in the UK for about eight to ten pounds in LIdl while the exact same bottle, same year, etc, goes for three euros in a French supermarket that's less than 50 miles away. It's one of the reasons why I just don't drink wine that often.

    • @mikewellwood1412

Even more gouged if you buy it in a pub!

"What's the nicest way of putting this?" We have a name for it here in Australia - "Chateau du Carton."
On a related note... Vodka with cranberry juice tastes far better than red wine, and won't mess your stomach nor your head (well not in the "hangover" sense anyway).

To be honest I rarely drink any fruit juice without adding some amount of clear alcohol, be it vodka, rum, or cachaça. I find some juices don't work too well with alcohol, in terms of taste. Most subtle white or yellow juices with added alcohol give me a bad impression, to me it taste like I am drinking a juice that began spoiling, even though I know that is not the case. Exception made to coconut mixed with pineapple, which is very good with alcohol.

So that would be "Blue collar trash blue wine" haha!

Now add a few oak or maple wood chips and let it sit for a few days. This will add the tannin that is so pronounced in red wines. I've done this before as I like to experiment even though I rarely drink. A tea bag also works quite well.
Mix in some blueberry juice and you get an even better "red wine" :).

I'm just going to let you know that wood not specifically processed for wine making can be very unsafe for this purpose. Remember most wood is treated with anti-fungal agents, insecticides, sometimes fire retardant treatments, and linseed oil (flax seed oil which has been heat and chemically treated to increase waterproofing and is not safe for consumption, unlike raw flax seed oil) for some woods, and can be invisible to the naked eye.
However if you can find wood which has been properly dried (seasoned/cured/aged naturally and not kiln dried as it does not allow the wood time to release any chemicals, natural or unnatural), and has not been treated with any chemicals, then it is safe.
If you manage to find such wood, you may want to consider toasting/burning the wood slightly, as part of the wine wood flavor is caused by that. Do not burn the wood though, just a slight char.
With regards to tannin's, there are two main groups, namely wood and grape tannin's. Wood barrels leach grape tannin's and release there own into the wine (in smaller quantities that what is removed, and with a different flavor profile based on the type of wood, the time of year it was harvested and even the amount of rain and it's acidity through it's life), but a large part of the flavor profile consists of the grape tannin's.
Source: Myself (and uncle) having worked with wood for many years (myself as a hobby and my uncle as a business), having done IT related work for a few companies in the wine and various alcohol (sherry, whiskey, brandy etc) business, and having taken a tour of a wine barrel manufacture that produces barrels for multiple farms in South Africa.
Anyway just be cautious with the wood you use as the chemicals/treatment may be dangerous. :)

Surprisingly, Sainsburies organic cab sav ain't bad at all - not because it's organic specifically, but it lacks sulphates etc so it's a bet less nasty come the morning after drinking it all from the bottle, because I'm classy as fuck like that.

I don't think it tastes that similar, but I do have a good palate sometimes. if you want a drinkable and very predictable wine (lacking nuance and character of really good wines), boxed is really not bad. Not good, no depth, but very smooth and predictable.

I know what you mean about the red wine we get here. I've paid £18 for a bottle and have been diappointed. I've stopped buying supermarket red wine now. My cornershop has a £16 and a £8 bottle of Chateauneuvf-du-Pape and they are both lovely.
