Norwegian MRE food rations.

  • These MRE (Meal Ready to Eat) food packs were sent to me from Norway by Christian (along with some interesting Norwegian chocolate). There's a breakfast version based on a Muesli and a main meal version. From the stylish packaging I think these are probably aimed at both military and recreational markets.
    MREs are like a culinary lucky bag for adults. All manner of edible treats and oddities inside, with a distinct culinary twist according to the country of origin. If you enjoy seeing them reviewed then the grand master of MRE reviews is Steve at:-
    / @steve1989mre
    These ones were very enjoyable. The muesli was quite rich and the freeze dried hot meal was intriguing and very tasty. The chicken was in the form of processed strips which actually reconstituted well.
    If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.co...
    This also keeps the channel independent of TH-cam's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

    As a former Norwegian air force medic, not gonna lie. Some of the best meals I've ever had were MRE's sitting inside the tent with my squad in -30 degree winter weather, drying clothes and reheating from the snowstorm blowing outside.

      @@bigclivedotcom Best cuppa I remember was in England, at some jousting demonstration at a castle I don't remember the name of when it was raining. Afterward in the car park was a caravan selling hot drinks and snacks and I wanted to get some hot cocoa for my five year old daughter who had the shivers. It was truly sublime. Oh, I'm an American btw who was stationed there in the 1980s.

    I was stationed at Thule, Greenland, sporadically for damn near 12 years. Twice each month, we were ordered to draw rations, and report to a remote area of the base, for a "survival and endurance exercise". We knew we had lucked out, when we pulled MRE's supplied by Norway, Denmark, or Canada. Their rations staved-off hunger for longer periods of time, than rations issued by other NATO/OTAN members; they also had stews which "warmed you down to your toes", after returning from outdoor adventures. Norwegian MRE's sometimes had a lingonberry cake-like desert, which was better than "mom's homemade pies". Hopefully, you'll get to try that desert sometime.

    I love how you analyze the MRE and go into detail: breaking down how much each component adds to the total calories and how you sometimes inspect the ingredients of some components. I also like how you immediately tried to identify the sweetening agent in the energy drink. Please do more of these as a side thing or as a separate channel.

    Way back when Christ was a Corporal, I was in the US Army, over in Vietnam. We lived on the old Army C-Rations, and in order to add a bit of ZZZZINg to them, most of us carried a bottle of Tabasco pepper sauce in our packs. A few drops of that could make the worst spiced beef in sauce taste like a grill steak, well if you closed your eyes and used your imagination. Still though, we all seemed to find a favorite, but the meals were distributed by the NCO in charge of your squad, so after the boxes were opened to reveal their contents, trading went on back and forth until everyone had what they liked the best. For me it was scrambled eggs with ham, they looked like shit, and the consistency was a sort of blend between jello and a hot dog, but they had a taste that I simply loved! A bit of tabasco and I could live on that wonderful meal, and the best thing about it was that NOBODY else liked it, so I could always trade anything for the ham and eggs, hell even ham and mother-fuckers (Lima Beans with ham) would get me a can of green eggs and ham (ya they did look a bit green in that olive drab can! You could eat them hot or cold depending on the nature of the break and if you could burn a heat tab without getting your balls shot off by the little yellow mother fuckers who lived in the jungle. I thought perhaps that was what that spicy sauce was in your MRE. I gotta tell you though, those MRE's that they serve now days sure look a hell of a lot better then C-Rations, and from what the lifers who were in the Army back when the K-Rations were served told us that the C-Rations were much better then the K's so I guess we were lucky to get what we did. Oh each and every C-ration came with a tiny pack of cigarettes, usually so old that they were extremely dry, since I smoked Kools, I could easialy trade mine for Salem's, which were in about half of the C-rats, seems I usually got Lucky Strikes in mine.

    • @jkocol
      @jkocol 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember getting those old c-rats or in-flight meals when doing field training in the Air Force in the 1980s. The best dessert was the pound cake in a can. The worst was the chocolate nut roll which was so dry you drank half a canteen to wash it down.

    I’m glad you liked it. I’ve eaten plenty of these during my time in the Norwegian Army. They also sell civilian versions of it under the name “real turmat”, and they are actually quite common for hikers.

    • @AndreNaumann
      @AndreNaumann 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      BearKire I would even go as far as: the real turmat meals are among the best freeze dried rations there are.. When bought in an outdoor shop, they are quite expensive, but well worth the money.. Tasty and they have bits to chew on where other dried meals are often grinded to a small uniform size to save fuel when heating..

    Clive: "arctic" in MRE title usually means that all food is freeze dried so it doesn't freeze to inedible piece of ice when left outside.

    • @tbelding
      @tbelding 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Actually, at least with US, 'Arctic' MRE's contain up to five times the calorie content of standard MRE's, as extreme cold requires more energy to operate the body.

    I haven't thought much about this before, but the double appearance of the "Kamfer drops" bags (Camphor candy) made me wonder if camphor is more common in Scandinavia than it is in the rest of Europe. I haven't researched this yet, but "camphor" has always made me think of anyone from old-school doctors and pharmacists to old wives using camphor as a non-prescription treatment, either in the form of a tincture, ointment, salve, and such. Either used to treat a cold when you don't have access to any proper medicine, or also as an ointment for tender or sore muscles and similar body aches. Nowadays, looking at the candy, I am wondering if the British parallel could be butterscotch or something similar. Any suggestions?

      Well, here I am in the largest number of Indian people outside India, and they make curries and such that are capable of clearing any blocked sinus in seconds. There is one that is called Lord of the Ring, and that I find is quite mild, though with a pleasant bite to it. I use it in salads as a dressing instead of mayo or other dressing. Some people find it hot though.

    Just a heads up on the chocolate. The body does not quickly extract and convert it to sugar, which is why diabetics can eat it. It is medium to low on the "Glycemic index" and is classed as a medium release product, this is due to the fat content which slows down the conversion rather than providing rapid, high but short lived peaks in blood sugar.

    In 1995 the army switched to the new type of food rasjons that you have there. Ihave a old pack that you still can eat it has a 20 years shelflife and consists of a tin that we used to call dead man in a tin that consisted of beef, pork, peas and a 1/2" thick layer of porkfat on the top you could eat it cold or warm. And for breakfast you had a kind of oatmeal (tasted like sawdust) with a lot of dextrose that gave you a very instant boost. It was awefull I'm glad they now have a new kind of emergency rations.
